@@64hapz if you really wanna be fair, you gotta realize there will be sales for the a6600 as well. so if you want to compare prices accurately, you need to do either retail vs retail or sale vs. sale. if the lack of 4k60 makes the a6600 not worthy of a purchase, why would someone think the a7iii is worthy of a purchase? it cost more and has less video features? why wouldn't someone wait for the a7IV and hope it has their magical 4k60? sure it will cost a lot more, but 4k60 would make it worth it, also FF. right?

Cos FF doesn't have it yet. Maybe just maybe you'll get it with firmware update (accompanied by overheating) after FF got it. Or at the very least, 10bit feature. All 3 are clearly capable of doing it at least externally but they're just holding it before a7s3

I have the a6400 and won’t be upgrading to this. The bigger battery and IBIS are the only things I see as huge benefits, but you can always just keep the camera plugged into AC power and use a tripod / gimbal for stability, respectively. Good product offering for someone who doesn’t have the a6400 already but not as an upgrade from the a6400. Thanks for the great video!

I don't get why there's so much hate on this new camera/lens; it's literally my ideal setup. All I've got right now is an a6300 with a 30mm lens. I make youtube videos and social media/website photo and video content for clients. My dream setup was an a7iii with the 16-35 2.8 lens and now with this a6600 and the 16-55 2.8, I can get a similar result (indistinguishable to the untrained eye from the full frame) for half the price and in a much smaller package. I'm seriously psyched for this release and will do my best to save up for it for when it comes out!

rsmith02 I tried but my firmware is too recent. It only works with the older firmware and you can’t go back to an older version once a new version is installed. Worked well on my a6300 though!

You've going to get your buffer halved, internal flash removed, the ability to change focus point removed, focus bracketing removed by "upgrading" to the a6600.

Just bought this camera a couple months ago and realized I hadn't seen what Jason had to say on it. Already had the 6400 and it did just fine. I wanted IBIS since I do a lot of hand holding shots and it seems to make a pretty decent difference on OSS lenses. On non-OSS lenses, it makes a slight difference. However, the bigger battery was a game changer for me. The way I shoot while out hiking, etc, this camera lasts all day on one battery for pictures. I recently shot a wedding and I did 2500 pictures on 20% of the battery..... My wife was shooting with the 6400 and she only shot about 1500 pics and had to change the battery once. Overall, I think it is great value and is definitely the camera I wished I was buying when I got the 6400 originally. And yes, this is a huge step up from the 6500 which wasn't even worth my time.

As a videographer who uses 2 a6500 for most of my work, the a6600 didn't improve anything for me personally. The AF on the a6500 is more than adequate for me. The recording limit wasn't an issue for me since the a6500 still has the app functionality which lets me turn off the recording limit. And since I use a SmallHD Focus monitor I already have a fully articulating screen that also gives me a headphone jack and lets me power the a6500 with Sony NPF batteries (which are better, cheaper, and more universal than the Z batteries). Honestly, the a6500 is the perfect run and gun camera for me with these solutions. The only thing I was hoping for was 4K60 and 10-bit...even externally would have made me happy. I know the a7sIII might have 4K60 and 10-bit but I'm sure it will be damn near $4k and at that point I'd start considering a proper cinema camera with better ergonomics, ND filters, SDI, etc. I guess I'll just save my money for now.

Awesome review Jason I use the flash on my a6500 to trigger other strobes in certain situations so to me that’s a downgrade. Yes I can use a remote trigger... but why remove it?! That little flash can be crucial in certain situations where that flash is better than no flash. The Autofocus on the A6500 is good enough and the IBIS I’m sure it sucks like the one on the A6500. You can rely on it for professional handheld video. The larger battery is a great add on but they should’ve put a front dial on that bigger grip. Same 24mp sensor when they could’ve upgrades to 32. I’m upgrading to a 7R4. Yes it is more money but future proof. And most professional photographers and hybrid shooter like myself have been relying on lighter setups like the A6500 for certain situations and full frame for others. So if you are going to spend twice I think you now can spend once and get everything in one camera. -It allows you to shoot in APSC mode at higher megapixels 26MP thank any a6000 camera - Better IBIS that actually works great in handheld situations - Dual Card Slot (fast on both slots) - you can use all APSC and full frame lenses - it has the bigger battery - full dials - more customizable buttons - Full frame. More light better depth of field - it’s not much bigger than the A6600 - Mic and headphone input - Better Menus And a lot more bang for your buck

its a good b canera for my sony a7 iii, i hate that i need for apsc lens especially fow wide, couse i have the full frame 28 f2, so in apsc mode is too close :( . I like sooo much that it has unlimited record features, and this is good for my long time shooting at theater. great the z battery choice, so i can use the same battery for those. Jasong you didn't tell about the picture profile, but i think that 6600 has the HLG like the a7iii right? The only think thats is really annoying is the only slot sd card. When you are shooting, especially at wedding you would ever got a backup files, if the sd breaks, and trust me, its happen!

I don’t know what so many people are complaining about. I would call it an updated a6500 rather than a new model. And it does have worthwhile updates. The main ones: -screen dimming in 4K fixed (was such a pain in shooting in full daylight) -poor battery life fixed -recording limit removed -video eye-AF added -headphone jack added -improves colours, skin tone rendering (making it easier to pair with other newer cameras like the a7iii) -updated focusing system like a6400, a9 Bonus noteworthy improvements: -larger grip -extra custom button -white balance lock (auto WB looks especially bad for video) Honestly this solved a lot of gripes that I had with the a6500. Of course 4K 60p would be sweet and for that they’re still falling behind the Fuji xt3. Expect it in the a7SIII and HOPEFULLY in the next aps-c release!

Yeah! Fuji XT3 has more features than a6600 but the biggest turn off for me is the lens collection. You still end up spending more money on fuji lenses compared to if you buy for example sigma 16, 30 and 56mm for sony. Sony also has better eye af capabilities

Would love to know whether that sunny mode is actually usable on a sunny day in 4k mode in a cine4 profile as an example... can you actually see anything? On my a6500, I shoot blind. Even the viewfinder is rubbish. Which is why I mainly vlog out on my canon g7x mark ii. Would be so good if this is resolved so I could start using my main camera more outside rather than only as a studio camera.

Jason this is a totally unrelated question. I’m a photographer getting more into videography. I’m in Nashville and get a lot of music video related requests. Last week it was shooting a flash mob on Broadway for a new song. I found myself really struggling to get focus. I’m so used to shooting photos and getting focus and taking the shot. In video, there’s no green focus square moving around the frame. Lol. Anyway, wanted to know if You have a KZbin video talking about getting focus during scenes with lots of movement? The small USB cable that comes with the camera to charge ( im not sure what its called what type of cable it is) ...is there a longer one that i can purchase somewhere ? I know if you put a crop sensor lens (Sigma 16mm 1.4) on a full frame bodySony A7III, the lens is affected by the 1.5 crop mode, it drops the megapixels. If you put a full frame lens, Sony 16-35MM 2.8 G Master, on this A6600 body, what happens????????

How about the 1080p quality ? It's been reported multiple times 1080p was soft on the a6500. It's the same sensor so I wonder if they improved that. Some people do still use 1080p I'm sure :)

Hi, Jason great stuff! With the announcement of the A6600 and the rumor of the A9 II coming out soon, can you please do a video addressing your thoughts on where Sony stands with the A7S II. I know you had mentioned it might come out at CES in 2020 and I think you might be right on that. It allows them to improve on what's already out on the market now and make a big bang in the new year. The downside is they miss the opportunity to make all of those pre-orders for a possible Black Friday / Christmas season.

#8 personally if they did nothing but remove the flash then it just removes a potential lighting option. I used to love the overblown look on my a6000, which I used to take photos with friends.

I finally bought the Sony a6600. I insert my SD card into my Mac and my pictures are there but my video isn’t. The camera is recording because I can play back video on the camera. Any ideas?

IMO it's much better. A6600 has: -flip screen -better battery -IBIS -much better AF -cheaper lens (Sigma) The XT-3 is fine, but not better.

The only thing to know is it has no 60p 4K which cancels any other thing you need to know.

No 6600 order here. Mostly based on price. Would I like to have one? Yes. All of the 6400 focus features, IBIS, and the Z battery are all desirable. $1,400 is simply too high for me. $1,200 would be tempting.
