I don't understand the card slot issue - I shot professional weddings from as long ago as the early 2000s, on top of the line Canon FF gear which only had one card slot in use(which were giant compact flash cards). I never bothered with second cards/slots. Cards rarely fail or even never fail in most cases, and pros will have a second or third body with them anyway. I've had an A6400 knocking about for 4 years and the card has never gone wrong in camera. I think people worry too much! I think judgement for the image quality needs to be decided when the RAW files can be opened - everything else is speculation based on JPEGS at the moment

It’s the same sensor as the fx30 so the raw images are the same. Also with cards I think it’s careless to say you don’t need to record to 2 cards, like if you haven’t had a issue that great, but you did say card do fail, so why not remove the risk. I just seen someone lose half a wedding because the single card failed. I also store the cards from slot one for 2 weeks while the gallery and video is being edited, I want multiple back ups

I ordered my A6700 last week. My main camera is the A7IV so I have all full frame glass (GM, G, Sigma, & Tamron). The main reason for the purchase is wildlife photography with either my Sigma 150-600 (225-900 f/7.5-9.45 35mm equivalent) DG DN OS sport and with my Tamron 50-400 (75-600 f/6.75-9.45) DI III VC VXD lenses. I’m getting A7RV AI auto focus with the full 759 point phase detection for a fraction of the cost of an A7RV. Crop mode on my A7IV is only 14mp.

If I am using the Manual mode (M), then I chose a certain Picture Profile (PP), will the PP be applied to both videos and still photos? Or just to videos when you press record and not to still photos when you press the photo shutter?

Thanks for the video! I'm thinking about getting a6700. Right now I'm trying to decide between a6700 and Fujifilm X-S20. I mostly film hiking videos and take nature related photos. For me the size and weight of the camera are important factors as I hike really long distances. Both of the cameras are really appealing. Sony has a slight upper hand because of the weather sealing and the better auto focus. Then again Fuji has 7 stop IBIS and open gate 6.2k video. It's a hard decision! Usually I've always leaned towards Sony.

I have an a6000 and it's looking like it's finally time to upgrade. After 4 years, the a6700 is a step up from the a6600 but definitely feels like Sony held back in a lot of areas so it wouldn't really be an alternative to their full frame lineup. For me, it's good.

Hey Gerard, First of all thanks for all of your videos. Really enjoy them watching. I have pre-ordered the A6700 yesterday because I like the opportunity to shoot in 4K60p without crop with the best autofocus available (maybe neglecting Canon with their non-acceptable lens policy). I will get good lenses like the Sigma 16 1.4, Sigma 18-50 and Sony 70-350 for a reasonable amount of money. In addition I appreciate the compactness of the lenses when doing short trips with my family. As I don't do photography for a living I accept the single card slot, the minor viewfinder compared to the A7IV, the worser low light performance compared to the A7Iv and lower megapixels compared to fullframe. However, I hope to get the overall best bang for the buck in the Sony Universum ;-) Cheers from Germany Simon

Great video! One quick positive note about the a67000's 1/4000 max shutter speed compared to previous a6xxx models is that the a6700 does have a boosted min ISO that allows you to go down to 50, so that should mean you can get a shot at 1/4000 and ISO 50 that is equivalent exposure to 1/8000 at ISO 100.

Oh you can also do this on the a7iv but it’s not recommend and even auto won’t use it, it’s like a fake iso or something I don’t fully understand it but it’s not great. Also iso 100 to 50 is like 1/4 stop with 1/4000 compared to 1/8000 is 2 full stops of light

​@@alexeipgISO 100 to 50 is one stop of light of course, just as changing exposure between 4000 and 8000. This can be easily demonstrated by checking the automatic exposure time set by the camera while letting all settings and conditions remain the same except ISO. Changing ISO from 100 to 50 changed it from 1/25 to 1/13 in my test on the A6600, so double exposure time. From what I gather about ISO 50, there are no real disadvantages to use it on newer cameras. On older ones they say you may lose a bit of dynamic range, but even if you did, your exposure would have to be pretty terrible to lose significant image quality over this.

As a Canon Rebel series shooter, the a6700 is a huge upgrade for me. I was planning to get the EOS R7, but the RF mount exclusive to Canon crippled the camera. Even before the announcement of the a6700, I was considering switching to the Sony system. The a6700 may be good enough for me, or it could be the best first camera in the Sony system.

Get the a6700 if your planning on doing video work, and watch my settings video about overheating, if people say it over heats then they need to learn the camera settings. I used the a6700 for 2-3 hour talking head interviews in 30 degree heat with no issues mate (4K 25fps)

I've had the A6600 for close to 2 years and, for the most part, like it but I've been rather frustrated by the poor stabilization. I understand this is improved (5-axis) in A6700 but still not up to A7RV (8-stop) standard. I use the A6600 primarily for travel video/vlogging and really wanted it to be my main vlogging camera but often find myself using my GoPro10 instead due to stabilization and ease of use. I will watch for further stabilization reviews (you didn't mention much) on A6700 but will likely end up buying it before my next extended trip. As far as second SD card slot is concerned that's fine by me - rarely use it in my Nikon D600 (but I'm not a pro). Same would go for 1/8000 shutter speed ... unlikely I'd ever really need it in reality. But ... best stabilization ... that's what I really wanted. Thanks for review and subscribed.

active stabilisation is great, you also get the gyro data which makes it look like a gimbal

I'm looking to upgrade from the A6000 and I've been torn between this new A6700 and the 7iv - with current deals there's only a £300 difference between the cameras and as far as I can tell the only thing the 7iv doesn't compete with the 6700 on, from a photography perspective, is the AI autofocus chip. However I've heard good things about the auto focus on the 7iv anyway, and the 7v isn't due to release until 24/25, so could be waiting a while for an AI chip in their lower end full frames as it stands. I'm leaning more towards the 7iv at the moment, as I'd quite like to start doing client work and the 1 SD slot does worry me, and the full frame resolution becomes much more important when taking photos for other people and businesses.

I wouldn't rule out getting an a6700 down the line if a tempting offer came up as I do have a lot of ASP-C glass so not prepared to abandon the system and I enjoy traveling light with the smaller lenses!

Fast paced, good points in absence of having the camera yourself, Gerard. Timely topic; a challenge, I suppose, to garner views when the YT “big guy” channels had hands-on units to evaluate. I have the A6600 for stills, but won’t be upgrading just yet. Front dial a plus, disappointing EVF/LCD. AI autofocus for specific subjects a bit of a gimmick IMO - like “lock focus on Australian photographers from New Zealand mode”😊. I don’t understand your A6600 point about not being able to use manual exposure. In “M” the back face dial controls your programmable choice of aperture/shutter speed; same for the unlabeled topside dial (the one that would otherwise default to exposure compensation). Not as convenient as A74 dual dial layout, but it works. Does that make sense? Don’t worry. I expect you to become one of the “big guy” channels yourself ... sooner than later. Cheers!

Oh thanks for the kind words, but for manual mode on the a6600 there isn’t 3 wheels, so you have to press a button for ev comp while in auto iso or to change the iso you also have to press a button

Great review fella. A long time A6000 photo shooter here. So I think the A6700 will be a worthy upgrade. Can understand the dilemma for pro shooters over the 2 card slots. However I think one slot for Biffs like me is ample. What rattles my cage thou is the pricing structure. 1400 George Washington's is around £1172.00 pounds. Including tax and at current exchange rate. Meanwhile in rip off Blighty, it's RRP for £1450.00. Why? Yes we pay 20% VAT etc. I'll wait till it comes in stock on E-infinty for a good deal.✊

More often than you think, but a few things to note is that buy good cards (check my recommendations in the description) also replace cards after 2 years (I don’t because I daul record, and cycle the old cards with new ones) and also replace them if any signs of wear on the connectors

The risk of card corruption is so overstated on KZbin. Been shooting for a couple of decades. Cards may have corrupted 2 or 3 times in total. I just lost one photos. The photos already recorded were unaffected. It never happened in the last 10 years to me. My Lightroom archive has 600k photos. So I shot more than twice than that, maybe. It is more likely that you drop a lens or a camera during a shoot, than a memory card gets corrupted. Anyway I always carry a couple of spare memory cards and camera on jobs. If a card stops working just swap the card.

@@gerardneedhamit is definitely a gamble. I think the choice of doing client work on a single card vs duel somewhat defines you as a person to an extent. Although many people would love many video features of for example the fx30 but also want to do photography work as well. It’s a shame the alpha line do not have duel because the a6700 with dues cards would be so amazing. However I think it is important to remember that the a6700 needs a v90 class SD card to be best utilised, these are pretty modern cards having been released mid 2017 and are much more reliable than as cards of the past. I’ve shot for 8 years now and I’m fortunate to have never had an SD card fail on me. I always format before a shoot but maybe (touch wood) I’m just a very lucky person when it comes to this. Nonetheless this was a great video to watch and I appreciate the time it took you to put this together, take care!

Yeah the same for me. I would've loved to get this as secondary camera but I feel like the premium line of Sony's apsc line should have these pro features like you mentioned. It would've seemed more sensible to cripple undated lower tier apsc camera.

Well you are right crippling the a6700 to a 1/4000 shutter is really a let down. And in addition i hope they put a 3million+ resolution instead of the 2.36evf. i guess i hold till we get that before upgrading my a6600. Maybe in another 3-4 year again 😂

Depends, if you want to dive into photography as a full time career then go for the a7III with its full frame sensor and dual sd card slot. If you want to do photography as a hobby or want to learn video then the a6700 has you covered ASPC lenses are way cheaper also

Great video! I don’t think the price conversation is worth it. For $1400 I think this is worth the money. My Problem comes in with the fact that I was willing to pay more money for those pro features, namely the higher res EVF and the fully-articulating screen from the A7RV (I’m photo-first and hate the video flip screen) and the faster Mechanical Shutter…. Now my only option is the A7RV as I have all APSC glass and would rather keep the compact package (even considering adding Sony’s compact 24mm and 40mm primes). Sony loves to cripple the APSC shooters which truly sucks but us as creators will surely keep powering through!

No, the best practice is not to record to two SD cards, that generates heat that will overheat your camera. People with two SD cards don't even do that, they more often use it to roll over to the next card. If your SD card dies, send it in it get it repaired. Chances are you will lose your SD cards or break them taking them in and out of the camera.

Actually the Canon R7 and Fuji X-S20 beats the 6700 in specs. The Fuji X-H2S with its stacked sensor is undoubtedly the King of APSC.

Yeah the xs20 has open gate which slaps, the h2s is way more expensive but does have dual cards and a stacked sensor. Canon r7 sucks as it has crappy clog 3 not clog 2, and also no 3rd party glass. A6700, slog 3, import LUTS, gyro data, active stabilisation, best autofocus in the game (shits on Fuji)

Honestly the single Card Slot, horrible evf and not having a joystick is kind of a dealbreaker for me. Like this couldn't have been that hard for sony to include these right ?

yeah they have to be planning a flag ship APSC camera like the fuji film h2s, this is basically a crippled Fujifilm xs20

@@gerardneedham i don't think they are to be honest. The apsc cameras always have been lacking to get people to buy fullframe. This camera exists to make the existing apsc fanbase happy and not jump ship whilst being crippled enough that people are still tempted to buy fullframe. They recycled parts from other existing cameras to satisfy the hardcore apsc customers but at the same time more "professional" users are still tempted to buy fullframe for dual card slots etc.

DPreview don't work with consistent white balance across their tests... Also, the so-called color-science refers to video and jpeg anyways, afaik. I always found the a6600 to produce fantastic colors in raw (similar to my A7r IV).. No need to switch from an IQ point of view, imo.

DP review has the JPEG and Raw files available FYI and set the White balance each time fyi I also do like the colors from the older Sony cameras like the a6600 and the a7III. They have definitely changed the raw colors and are much better now in newer cameras from the A7IV and up

@@gerardneedham The white balance in the tests is not calibrated and instead they always use auto white balance, FYI. Consequently, the differences in color reproduction in the comparison tool cannot be used to infer differences in color science, as you suggest. That would also be pretty drastic differences, to be honest.

In many ways, the Sony a6700 proves itself as a downgrade: No Two Card Slots, Serious Overheating Issues, Low Quality EVF, Low Quality LCD Screen, the ugly design of the a6000 (which I have and is overheating monster), No central EVF, etc. Sony knows better, the FX30 proved that in many of the respects such as overheating issues and two card slots (Express A). Honestly, looks like Sony is trying to wiggle its way out of the apsc market, once and for all and for good. Adios Amigos to the guys & gals who were Sony apsc fanboys and fangals. Adios Amigos from across the Pacific to the Rest of the World. Adios Amigos! 😎😎

Just looks like old tech recycled. I was hoping for more innovation. Stacked sensor, faster frame rate, no rolling shutter, type A card slot. Mini A1 to have as a backup to A1 with the crop sensor. The A7iv has more to offer and with cash back and deals isn't that much more expensive. Opportunity missed Sony.
