This show is really getting better and better...we've got the Digitalrev TV, which is something like TopGear with cameras, we have Philip Bloom, who makes his reviews like piece of art. And then we have your show, which fits perfectly. I like that there is always this sort of "spark" between Chris and Jordan (just like in TopGear). I'd like to see something more than reviews though, some photo challanges? When both of you would pick one camera and then have some competition?

Chris is really trying hard to find things to dislike on this camera. I feel it's also because they've been reviewing a lot of Sony camera's lately. He's afraid to be seen as a Sony fanboy if he keeps praising their cameras lol. But this camera deserves the praise imo. Integrating IBIS is a substantial upgrade. Build quality is improved, better video codec and many smaller design problems of the original A7 have been resolved. Canon renews full frame cameras after many years without changing much. Sony did a lot in one year.

Cole Droster I do wonder if they are playing up their disagreements for the video to be more entertaining (creating more conflict in the narrative), or if they actually do have an adversarial relationship in real-life too, and it simply seeps into their videos.

a7 mark ii + sony 24-70 f 2.8, good enough for youtube video?
@bijosn
@bijosn 5 жыл бұрын
it would be overkill in my onion (more than good enough). You might consider a a6500 instead (better autofocus and video capabilities) and a bit of a wide zoom. A cheaper but equally sufficient option would be the canon m50 with a wide angle zoom.

@@lee-nus The lightweight 28-70 kit lens, which got panned a lot initially, has been praised a lot in more recent reviews. It contains OSS, so the original A7 MkI works fine. I have owned one for years, don't need stabilization as I am very steady down to 1/3 second, and much appreciate the lighter weight of the Mark I.

I too am an avid Canon shooter and am always looking around at the competition to stay up to speed. Each release Sony makes is a step ahead of Canon at this point, but hearing from you guys and a field professional is very helpful. One of the by far greatest things about Canon, for me, has been that it works in absolutely every environment I shoot in: pouring rain, snow, extreme cold, extreme heat, disgusting humidity, harsh sand, etc. In all cases, my Canon 5D3, 7D2 are flawless performers. (The extra weather sealing on the 7D2 make me extra confident) Sensors aside because...honesty, I have yet to feel a Canon sensor hold me back in my work while countless internet hardasses think they're junk cameras, I just laugh. Working in gloves is huge. I still don't enjoy the looks of that scroll wheel like Chris pointed out...honestly a deal breaker when I think about it hard. The ergonomis/menus of the Sonys killed them for me in the past. Being able to easily operate every function on a Canon in gloves is a great thing for many real world situations I can find myself shooting in each year. Are Sony lenses weather sealed? That's something I'm not seeing advertised. These are things that don't impact the owning experience of many users, which is why it's nice to see ***** get his hands on one. I don't find myself in Antarctica, but he's pushing cameras to extremes that add enormous weight and credibility to his opinion. That comment on battery life?!?! Wow...what would I do when I fly in to a location that's near freezing?!?! Not work or keep swaping batteries all day? Great review!

I know this is an old video (I'm currently pretty much watching your entire channel), but I don't think the shutter is annoyingly loud on this (or even on the original). Heck, my T3i's shutter is a lot more obnoxious because it also sounds super cheap on top of being quite loud.

Is there any reason why it's so loud? A few people that went on a trip to Greece with me brought A6000's and A7 / A7R's and that shutter would practically echo in some locations. I brought my K1 and it was basically silent by comparison even though it still has to throw a big mirror out of the way on top of closing the shutter. What's the deal Sony?

The Sony a7II was introduced in 2014 one year after the introduction of the original a7 in 2013. So the advancement of sensor performance was not something impressive. The Sony a7III was introduced four years later in 2018 and that's why the sensor performance of the Sony a7III is so impressive. The only significant advantage of the Sony a7II is the sensor stabilization. Sony has a long tradition of sensor stabilization from its dSLR period. Even before the purchase of Minolta by Sony the Digital Konica Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 5D and 7D had sensor stabilization.

A couple of details you missed in the review (minor but still), Sony made the screen extend a little bit further away from the body of the camera so when you're looking down on it the EVF eye cup isn't in the way. The directional input of the SD card is not into the side of the body, not the back of the body. The HDMI & USB slot at moved up next to the other inputs. Sony also substituted the AWB button for ISO and I believe intended the c1 or c2 button to act as the AWB button (I assign Eye AF to C1). I am an A7S shooter and I bump the round dial a lot changing the ISO, so this is a good change as well. With the Alpha line offering in body stabilization, the A-Mount lenses don't offering image stabilization -- now that this body has it, using A-Mount glass with the LAEA4 adapter will allow sharper images.

Hello Chris. I've been a fan of your reviews for quite some time now, and enjoyed this Sony A7II review as well....except for one thing...what is your obsession with "one-handed shooting"??? If one is interested in obtaining a high-quality photographic image, who the hell is going to shoot one-handed?? IMHO, that's insane. Also, you glossed over the fantastic Sony/Zeiss lenses that are native to this system, such as the superb 55 1.8 that was used here, plus the upcoming Sony 90mm f/2.8 G Macro, not to mention the new Zeiss Batis line. That said, I do appreciate your reviews, and sharing some of the good points of each system. Thank you!

I see you filmed this segment with the Sony FS7, and it looks great guys. BUT, I think relative to your KZbin being more geared towards DSLR professionals and higher end enthusiasts I think it would be nice to see you film with the equipment you review mostly. This is something I struggle with. I'd much rather shoot our episodes on cameras I love using, and the Sony FS7 is currently my favorite camera. That said, I do try to mix things up, which is why you'll see recent episodes filmed on the Sony A7s and RX10, Panasonic GH4 and HCX1000, and even Canon's 7D MK II. I don't like to shoot with DSLRs unless absolutely necessary though, I think mirrorless cameras much much more sense for hybrid shooting. Jordan @ TCSTV

Uh, I am not used to so many errors in your reviews, guys :)... a) There is no Sony Alpha mount, its A-mount. Alpha stands for interchangeable lens cameras, so both A-mount and E-mount. b) You don't have to use a 64GB card or bigger for XAVC-S. If you find one of the rare 32GB or 48GB SDXC cards, you can use them too ;)... it just has to be SDXC and those happen to me mostly 64GB+. c) Its "A7 II", not "mark II". "Mark" is still from Canon ;)... Yeah, I know its minor... What I really wondered is why Kyle complained about the dynamic range but uses Canon. When you look at DXOMark.com you'll see that most fullframe and even APS-C cameras from the last 5(!!) years (hell, even compact cameras from Canon themsleves) have better dynamic range than *ANY* Canon DSLR :-D
@Cal94
@Cal94 6 жыл бұрын
Lofote these guys are from a camera store. They have history on their side. the A mount was initially branded the alpha mount in asia (using the greek character) by minolta when they created it. When sony acquired minolta, they expanded that branding world wide, so for a time, the alpha mount was indeed, the alpha mount. Only when sony started the e-mount, while keeping the alpha moniker, did the alpha character get dropped in favour of the A today. But you could stuff any one of a number of decent minolta alpha glass on a sony a mount camera today and they [should] function fine, so they're not incorrect on that point. I almost got an A mount camera way back for that, for the potential cheap glass...

In late 2021, I've been thinking of getting a trusty old a7 II as my first full-frame camera. But, looking at the difference in this video between the clips shot with the a7 II and clips shot with the FS7, it's night-and-day different. That's not to say the a7 II was BAD at video, but it wasn't well-suited to serious videographers the way the a7 III and a7 IV are.

which one is better camera, a6500 or a7ii?
@Club4AGChannelUSA
@Club4AGChannelUSA 6 жыл бұрын
Paul Wence A6500 is a better sports camera. It can focus faster, and track subjects better on the fly, and burst off 11 shots a second. Even the fastest of A7 series can’t touch that at 5 FPS rate. That also means chasing wildlife, pets, or children, it does better too. A7 series are better if your work is critical in finer detailed control, and extreme resolutions of the photos and you have about 4x the budget for gear and far more expensive lenses to achieve it. If you already own crop factor format lenses for the A6000 series, you can use it on the A7 but the results would actually be worse than on the A6500 as you’ll be using only about half the area of the A7’s sensors. A7 is a full frame factor sensor and you’ll therefore need full frame 35mm factor lenses to reap the gains of the A7. So the answer depends. For a limited budget and general all around photography, the A6500 is a champ in vale for dollar. 90% of our general photography needs would be covered by this camera with virtually equal results, and depends on more the skills of the user to know how to take these shots. A7 exists for photographers who take over the controls manually, and do things beyond the average user snap shots, and for that creativity side is expanded with the A7. That is also why Sony has three different versions of each generation of the A7, with A7, A7R, and A7S, each with the extremes being in different areas for expansion of artistic tools, and performance spectrums. So it all depends on what we mean by best... as A6000 series and A7 are very different with target users, while performance isn’t that far off at all for mundane photography at all.

Although the A7 has an impressively small camera body, it still uses full frame lenses which are the same size and weight as they've always been. I'm sure when you compare an A7 kit to a regular DSLR the A7 will come out weighing less though, but I'm just saying it's not as compact as some think. The RX1 on the other hand has that fixed lens, part of which is hidden inside the body. It may not be pocketable but it's definitely light and compact compared to other DSLRs.

Great review, guys! Balanced critique and tested what's new. What's disappointing is Sony's battery life. There was a time when their cameras lasted forever, granted those were point and shoots. Chris, what gloves are you using? I would really like a pair of gloves that will keep my fingertips from going numb.

Have you done a “shoot-out” between the Sony a7II, the Nikon D4s, and the Samsung NX-1? THAT would be interesting to a lot of us.

Many thanks for all yours videos which are helpful. I have Canon m50 but i'm not happy with iso performance in low light. So i decided to upgrade to full frame kamera, which kamera du you recommend to by canon 6d mark ii or sony A7 ii?

Good discussion in your conclusions, both brought up valid points. It's refreshing to see you guys having different opinions. Looks like a good camera. Quick question... Are there any power management options that could help extend battery performance?

Sandeep Krishnan Here's my A6000 kit. Bear in mind that I like shooting with primes. Sigma 19mm F2.8, Sony 35mm F1.8. Sony 50mm F1.8. These three lenses can handle the majority of subjects I like to take pictures of. I'm not a big telephoto guy. Jordan @ TCSTV

Thank you very much. Would you consider Sony lenses superior to Canon, conscious that price point is very high? I am planning to invest on one of classes of these brands and though mirror less is my choice of body.

Disagree with Chris on the marketing approach with releasing the A7II before an A7RII. Many companies release a flagship first and it makes a similar affordable option available afterwards to entice would-be owners to buy into the system and still have something to upgrade to later on. However, that being said, Sony still has seen success releasing the A7/A7r and then the A7s afterwards, and still having people buy the A7 with those options available.

I must agree with Jordan, I'm pretty good handheld down to 1/15 @ 200mm on a 70-200 f/2.8 VRII on my D810. That said, I don't rely on it often as most of my work involves flash. I don't find any blur when blending flash with ambient, though.

A72 weight ... is a HUGE plus, IMHO. You don't feel like it's a cheap PoS. Agreed on the placement of the shutter button. I felt it was kind of cheap response too.

Great review. I noticed that the shot taken at 3:06 is actually a video. There is water running under the ice. Was that intentional? I thought they were all supposed to be still photos at that point. LOL

I think in a 3 to 4 years, I can see the mirrorless cameras an option for pictures. They release a new camera every year, but the lenses are not catching up to the compact size of the camera. There is still no 1.4 primes design for this camera yet and it seems like it's going to be a while before you start seeing them. I do like the compact size, but it's pointless if I still have to use a Canon L glass or Nikon G to get good glass. At the moment I definitely feel the selling point of the A7 series is the video capabilities. I definitely would buy an A7 if the glass was there for stills as a second camera for travel and walk around. But for video, it's definitely seems like a great video camera no question.

I anticipate LOVING the grip. One of the main reasons I couldn't get the A7.... another being the shutter button. Being used to a Canon 6d which has near perfect grip, the A7ii will come closer to that. I hold the 6d one handed...or would like to, but this being even lighter will be nicer. Sure, heavier than the unstabilized A7, but worth it.
