Tony & Chelsea review the new Sony a7C II and Sony a7C R, the most compact full-frame mirrorless cameras. They're perfect for travel, vlogging, and general photography. However, some aspects of their design make them better suited to casual rather than professional photography.
First, the Sony a7C II is based on the Sony a7 IV. The Sony a7C R is based on the Sony a7R V. The C cameras have most of the same specs, and exactly the same image quality, as the cameras they're based on. However, they have a lower-quality viewfinder, a worse sync speed (1/160 instead of 1/250), and only a single SD card slot insead of two. However, they're less expensive.

My a7rIV is my main camera and my a7c is my backup/travel camera. The idea of having a backup that will shoot as well as my main camera is appealing. Having a travel camera that I can combine with a compact prime like my 50mm 2.8 for travel is also appealing. I am with Tony on this one.

The speed of Imaging Edge, Sony's photo app, isn't the main problem. Getting it to connect the first time and staying connected is the issue.

image edge disconnects if you try to view photos on camera. If you view on your tablet or phone it works almost flawless. I use it and it has great range. Now the creators app allows the transfer of raw files and allows you to view photos on camera without disconnecting. It does disconnect randomly being it is a newer app and not quite as refine as image Edge is.

I have Sony a7r4a and I absolutely love it, image quality is beyond amazing .Besides all these high megapixel cameras have been based upon a previous sensor, that was produced back in 2019. It's pretty much about marketing, but those nice flip out screens and videos specs are worth mentioning without any doubt, however, in terms of image quality there hasn't been any significant upgrade ever since

Great video, thanks for the great first look into these cameras. Hope to hear a bit more about over heating test results in a future in-depth review. Also, I know battery life is taking a HUGE hit (540/510 CIPA vs. 740/680 CIPA in the original A7C) which is both expected but still disappointing. Would also be interested to know if A7C2 suffers from what some users have complained about noise in shadow details and also not as sharp eye AF when using wide open apertures as the A7IV? Finally, do you think it’s worth upgrading from the original A7C to A7C2 for photography?

These make great street/travel/backup cameras to their bigger brothers. I would not use these as a main camera though due to the low screen resolution, tiny EVF, 1 SD card slot, and no joystick. These simple things make the whole user experience so much better but are forgivable as a second camera.

Thank you for the video. While the view finders are the same resolution as the A7C the magnification is not. Also the rear LCD is a little higher resolution and neither version supports 1/8000 shutter like the bigger brother they were derived from. Also as others asked how would the C II compare to the A6700 feature for feature and with a lens set that is appropriately sized for each body.

I’m looking to upgrade from the A6600, mostly shooting wildlife stills (birds in flight) with the Sony 200-600. I’m really excited by the new auto focus systems and trying to decide between the A6700, the A7CII or do both have so many compromises that I need to spend the money on a used A1 or switching to a Z8 ( I’m not keen to spend this kind of money on either). Any thoughts?

@@Citizenflaba People following the channel know it's about the latest AF tests. I'm surprised that the none of my usual reviewers (Damien Bernal, Amazing Nature Alpha, Northrups) made an actual AF test. Jared Polin did, but it's more a tracking test. Tracking already works great on the A7iv, but focusing does not for fast moving subjects.I would have liked to see if the A7cii is an improvement there.

Chelsea, great review, except for one error: there is no parallax failure (2:02) in a Sony A7CII or A7CR camera's EVF. This is not an offset rangefinder camera. What you see in the viewfinder is what the lens sees, even though the EVF is offset from lens center.

Tony, what are the tweaks you refer to in the video for reducing noise and increasing sharpness on the A7CR when shooting at high ISO? In-camera or in post-processing?
@EmilWall
@EmilWall 11 ай бұрын
Post-processing, most likely. Lower resolution sensors produce less noise SOOC whereas higher res generally produces a better noise-to-signal ratio which means if you apply noise reduction you can get more details with the same amount of noise as with a lower res sensor.

I have gone back to my Sony Gear...Now I use two original A7c (used) and an even older A7s (...great for night work) for all my street/work/play/etc. I am an American retired in the wonderful city of Bangkok...(Thanks for your revue on Zooms a while recently) I will be purchasing a Sony fe 200-600/5.6-6.3 for my street/planes/boats/animals/etc fun in a couple of months...I presently own the fe70-200/4 which serves me just fine for up close work. Now that full frame sensors have 60 megapixels, the pixel pitch is about the same as a 20 megapixel M43 sensor, and is smaller than the pixels on many APS-C sensors. Do the 60 megapixel sensors have dynamic range more in line with the smaller M43 sensors, or is there something more to the relation between pixel size and dynamic range than that?

Dear, I would like to ask You a question…. I have a Sony camera A7R3- system-version 3.10 and I would like to ask you if the following is possible with this camera with a Sony 85mm F1.8 lens and aperture maybe set on F 5.6. I would like to make a timelapse/interval shooting, let’s say every 3 seconds a shot over a period of 30 seconds (10 shots in total) with myself in the picture walking towards the camera itself on tripod….. with eye-autofocus ON and real time tracking ON… and nobody pressing any button on the camera except myself pressing start and running towards my startpoint … I start walking at 25 meter distance… walk slowly towards the camera and looking into the lens…. After 30 seconds I’ll be at 1 meter distance away in front of the camera….. I’ll be happy with maybe 5 or 6 sharp pictures…. Of the total 10 pics…. I am trying but donot succeed… I cannot find the right settings …. I presume that my 6-year old Sony A7R3 cannot do this…. But…which Sony camera could do this? Maybe the Sony A7R4 or A7R5 or A7CR or… none these… ??? Do I have to switch brands? I try to find answers on the web… but I find nothing in clear detail about this item… Please advise me! I’m subscribed to Tech Through The Lense, but I do not follow them as closely as I do your channel. They just made a video on the Sony a7c Mark II right after you did.

It could be interesting to see a comparison between a Leica Q3 and a Sony A7cR with a 24mm/1.4; a Leica Q2 would do. Cropping-in to 35 mm , 50 mm and 75 mm on both cameras. Thank you

Adorama is our sponsor who allows us to do objective reviews of 2023 cameras for $3,000, which have a viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 m dots from 2012. Thank you, your reviews are very objective!)))

A7Cii 4k60fps with 1.5 times crop? Kinda lame and a hard pass for me unfortunately. I'll stick to my Canon R8, which is excellent for it's price. Guess I'll just have to use stabalised lenses though..

Yeah, Sony really hasn't introduced a good competitor to the R8. We film in 4k/60, so the R8 would be my pick as a hybrid camera at that price point. I like the viewfinder on the R8 better, too.

I don’t know if I’d sell my a7r5 for the a7cr but I like that idea of cropping with a prime. I have a 20 and 35 f1.8 I think would be good for travel. But that price! I think I could achieve what I want with both the a7cii and maybe the a6700….1400 is very tempting.

I don’t imagine the A7C is weak in auto focus lol maybe it’s more like great and even better.

1/160 Vs 1/250 no biggie. Use Nd to bring down light levels to 1/160 to just get a more powerful flash tor hss. Come on, now you are just being picky

My KZbin feed is filled with these reviews. Here's the thing; I'm looking to downsize my current kit for a smaller form factor. And... neither of these cameras holds the slightest interest to me. They are certainly less expensive than other FF Sony models. But to achieve the price point they dropped essential features (video specs, crap EVF, no joystick, single card slot...) and still priced them at $2,200 and $3,000 respectively. Add a decent lens and this gets very close to a Leica Q3. Ok, it's a fixed lens, but superior by a mile in every other way.

I feel like canon not raising the price at all on its R6 mark 2 was sufficient lol the screen and evf are also usable for checking focus and bright so that’s nice. Both manufacturers seem to be focused on different things to differentiate. Sony with all these bodies that each have pros and cons. Canon just starting to widen the field with bodies and readying the second iterations of all its mainline mirrorless bodies

I’m with you! I want something small like M6 mark II with RF system. The R8 is too big.

A7C II and A7C R redundant models for me. A7 IV or A7R IV are small anyway. They better make A7 V and 8K 100 fps without croop

Why do Sony persist with crappy 1m dot LCD screens on so many of their cameras? £3000 in 2023 and these lot can't give us a half decent LCD screen?? Affects those who review images in camera after taking them. Which is a lot of people!!!

Yeah that was the most frustrating aspect of these cameras. You literally can't tell if something is in focus. Fortunately the AF is really good, so wherever it said it was going to focus did turn out to be in focus... but still, I need more detail.

For work where critical focus is needed (e.g. product photography I do) can't get away with 1m dot screens for zooming in post shot to see assess focus. 1.44m dot is borderline in my experience, with 2m+ dot being what you need (Canon R / Nikon Z have them across their high end lineup)

For the A7CR especially it's bizarre to go with such a poor screen. People who buy high res bodies are often pixel peepers who can't be that happy with the experience of zooming in on a 1m dot screen. Real head scratcher.

Surprised by the amount of people loving the a7CR. I think it is about $400 overpriced. Simply not worth the savings over the a7RV. Though at first I was thinking about it so I can use my 24mm as two different lenses by switching to crop mode

first gen a7C did not have a ss/aperture dial at the back, I see this one has it. But still, the lack of programmable buttons is a big drawback

The front dial is lacking in the original, I'm glad they brought it in the new model! You can program buttons on the A7C, but they're not particularly labeled C1, C2, etc.

IMO, not worth the price difference between a used like new a7c for $1500 from MPB or KEH. Secondly if you are going to put big heavy lenses on these cameras, just buy either a Sony a7iii or iv. If you want a travel, pocketable camera get the Sony RX100 VII.
