My current opinion is: I'm going to wait about a year from now and am going to buy the a7c on black Friday (or so). I like the smaller body and the viewfinder on the side even being less sharp. My nose often pushes into the screen. About the screen I like if I'm able to turn the screen with the front facing the camera, when packing the camera into a bag. I'm doing a bit of sports photography but only as a hobby and I'm doing the sport myself so I'm right at the fighting area. Im converting from a crop sensor so I'm happy for the larger amount of light on the sensor. And the focusing is really fast on both but doing a few videos with the new color science will help because the sports I'm doing is Karate and the white clothing will look nicer. Thanks for the side by side comparison.

That said, what you’re talking about with programming each custom button to multiple functions is also possible on the a7iii. You can have a separate set of custom button functions for photo and video on both these cameras. The difference is that on the a7iii... you get way more buttons. I was at the same place a year ago. Firstly I discovered Sony a6400. I was almost decided but then a6600 has been released. I saved some money and went for a6600 with 16-55 2.8 lens. I am extremely happy with that camera and with that lens. Now I realized that is more important to have nice editing software and a gimbal to make a videos more cinematic. I just ordered Davinci Resolve (now they offer studio version together with speed editor for free) in studio version as I'm using free version right now with some limitations. Then the gimbal - I was almost decided to go with weebill s but... DJI just released RS2 and RSC2. Handheld is nice in 60% of the time. But you follow all nice KZbinrs and want to create same quality. In the meantime I learnt that you also need to have ND filter, otherwise videos or photos shoot outside will be... very bad. It is good to have a backpack, peak design slides, extra battery with Newell's charger, small rig and obviously a mic :) I the future I will go for lighting. Good PC with 64 GB of RAM and powerful GPU will be also a nice to have. So the camera is just a starting point :)

Without black friday discount, it's a no-brainer to pick a7c or a7iii over the a6600. Even with the discounts, a7c + Sigma 24-70 = $2,800 a6600 + Sigma trio primes = $2,500 For only $300 difference, I would pick the convenience of the zoom and higher dynamic range of the full frame sensor. The jump in dynamic range is absolutely ridiculous. On APS-C I would never go above 6400 ISO, but on the A7iii I was calmly shooting 12,800 without worrying. Why I needed that? I was shooting sports in near pitch black with f/1.8 primes. On APS-C I had to go to 25,600 ISO at f/1.8. Still can't match the A7iii at 12,800.

A full frame, ibis, 2 card slots and decent modern tech for under 2k. That's what I really need. The Nikon Z 6II is starting to look good.

Best straight to the hands on points video I've seen comparing these two cameras. I was leaning towards the A7C because of the color science, but the physical usability points of the A7III may have changed my mind. I found a video that had great profile settings for A7III, so that may be the solution. I'll keep looking for quick color fixes. Getting back to camera work per new job. New subscriber 👍

Dunna, huge question and wasn’t sure where to ask. I have a canon m50 now but screen is broken and never really felt wow about the camera. Is the Sony A7C worth the cash and what two sub $400 lenses in 24, 35 or 50 would be best do you think? I would be down for a conversation even, if that would make it easier. Thanks in advance for any advice. I’ve got some thoughts of what to get but you have a lot more experience with Sony cameras than I do.

How is the viewfinder on the A7c? I've heard that it's quite small. I'm coming from analog so a decent viewfinder is paramount. I do love the compactness and weight reduction, something easy to throw over my shoulder is important. Size+weight is the reason I returned my DSLR and turned away from digital photography years ago lol.
@dunnadidit4 жыл бұрын
Yeah unfortunately the viewfinder is a bit smaller due to the reduction in overall size. If a killer viewfinder is a must, this might not be the way to go

I'm not cool with the shutter. I still use strobes (underwater) that are limited to the flash sync speed of the camera (no high speed sync) and the a7c is a step down from the rest of the a7 series at 1/160 max. Same as the aps-c shutters. Also only 1/4000 max instead of 1/8000. And lastly having no mechanical front curtain shutter can cause slight issues with flash photography and in general at very fast shutter speeds. So basically if you want to progress with flash photography, this ain't it. OK, that shouldn't be a big gripe considering the form factor for a more casual/walkaround use. And if it were $500 cheaper I wouldn't even bring it up.

Dpreview made the point that the C didn't really need a joystick because of the newer AF. They put af box over the subject and pressed the rear AF button and ot tracked what ever was selected. I think Lok said the same thing saying why would you work any other way with it because it was so easy to use.
@dunnadidit4 жыл бұрын
I can see that for sure, especially for video I find the touch much more intuitive, but I did miss the joystick just a bit (and the fact that it, itself is a button). Just one more thing to put down as personal preference between different buyers/shooters. That seems to be the name of the game between these two cameras.
@AgnostosGnostos3 жыл бұрын
Usually camera manufacturers solve issues or omissions of their first innovative camera model soon with their second model. For example Sony with the a7 II of 2014 changed the position of shutter knob of a7 of 2013 and added IBIS, uncompressed raw etc. Nikon with the D610 of 2013 changed the problematic shutter mechanism of D600 of 2012. Canon R5 and R6 of 2020 had dual memory slots instead the one slot of the original R model. I predict that the second model of a7C will be launched in 2022, a year after the Sony a7 IV introduction. The Sony a7C II will certainly have the new touch screen enabled menu system, larger EVF, better hand grip, better shutter mechanism and probably dual SD slots. However if Sony do all these with Sony a7C II what's the reason for someone to buy the Sony a7 IV with the same sensor or if the price of Sony a7C II is much lower than 1800$ what's the reason for someone to buy the a6600 or the future a6700.

I’m switching to the Sony from the Nikon Z6 mainly because the focusing system isn’t up to par. So I think I’m going with the a7c for the subject tracking and better autofocus. I’m worried that the small body would be less comfortable and not having 3 dials to change iso on the fly. I’m thinking I can get used to pressing the ISO button on the wheel. Also I’m worried about the grip when I graduate to nicer and heavier lenses? Are my concerns justified or should I be fine?
@dunnadidit4 жыл бұрын
There are little workarounds for all of those things! You do get used to the settings without the dials, you can also get third party grips that help if you’re having trouble there. I’d say that the A7c is a solid choice, especially if you know and understand it’s shortcomings when you go into it

I was interested in hearing this... I currently use the A7iii mostly for photo (or when I need FF) and A6600 for video purely as the screen flips up and it has face track AF if using hdmi. I went with the A7III for the better ergonomics and the dual card slots. I hope to make a big trip, next year and losing a day's shooting to a card glitch would be unmitigated suckage. I did add an A6400 with the kit lens as a vlogging/gimbal camera. I'm upgrading the A6400 to the A6600 with the 10-20 f/4 PZ lens. I'll be pretty pretty well set on camera bodies at that point, and future upgrades will probably be lenses. I thought about the FX30, but everybody's backordered on it, and nobody can say when they'll actually be able to ship an order. And frankly, the FX30 means new, high-dollar cards and a computer upgrade to run Catalyst, so the cost difference is more than just the $400 difference between the FX30 and the A6600.

Would like to hear more about the My dial function. Seemed interesting but you skipped ahead without explaining it in depth. The UI isn't very self-explanatory since it's a Sony.
@dunnadidit4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I hear you for sure! It’s tough to decide what to go in depth on and what to gloss over! The my dial function allows you to choose a dial, then give that dial 4 different functions, the main one and then 3 others. Then you assign the my dial switch to a custom button. Every time you hit that custom button, it will cycle through the functions of the dial. On the A7c, you can do it with both the top dial (typically Aputure) and the function wheel on the very back. So before you hit it, the dial would be aperture... then hit it once and it might be shutter speed (your choice) and then hit it again and it’s WB temp and again and it’s iso, the 4th time you hit it, it goes back to standard.
