You seem to have very little bias, often blunt about your opinions (such as saying stick with the equipment you got), you don't use click-baity titles, and you actually talk about negatives all the time!!! I went from an a6500 to an a7riv last year, and I haven’t looked back. For me and what I photograph, the better high ISO performance and eye autofocus were game changers. But I loved my a6500 and my a6000 before that and would recommend an APS-C to most of my hobbyist friends, especially now that Tamron has that all-in-one f/2.8 zoom. Thanks for the informative video!

I had both the a6000 and an a6500, this week I finally parted with my a6500, and my sigma lenses, so I could purchase an a7iii. So now I need to rebuild my lens kit. As of now I’m only using my tamron 28-75 f2.8. I REALLY wanted an a7c but got a killer deal on a used a7iii that I couldn’t pass up!

what do you photograph and why is it so important to you to go full frame in comparison to your friends? I’m really interested, because I’m only a hobby photographer and use an a6000 and I’m really annoyed by the autofocus and the colors of the pictures sometimes. But since I’m not that strong, I really like the light weight of my setup. Also, fullframe is really expensive

Excellent review. I upgraded from a a6400 to an a6600 because I needed the IBIS, and I'm very happy with it. I decided against the A7c because of the cost of full frame lenses. Your review covered all the bases, and confirmed my decision.
@Kekster3000Ай бұрын
Tbh, from personal experience, IBIS in a6600 is really not that great. I mean, it's better than nothing (in most conditions), but I was really SURPRISED that stabilization in my old 2012 low budget a37 is noticeably better than in 2019 main line a-series camera. And it's day and night in lower light conditions. Regretted not just going for a cheaper ZV-E10 without any IBIS but with gyro data, or for 6500 and a gimbal at least

Wish I saw this kinda comment more often. Cameras have been *very good* for a long time now. Latest and greatest is rarely needed. When I wanted to try mirrorless after decades of Nikon DSLRs.. I picked up an original A6000 for $225. Used it for two years and then swapped over to the A7C once I knew exactly what I needed. That A6000 netted me thousands of great shots and never held me back.

I still have my A7r and that full frame sensor is so highly detailed, you need to pair it with a better than general purpose lense. The thing is, only full frame primes are compact. The zooms not so much.

I spent a month comparing cameras until i finally decided to buy the a6600 over full frame cameras. The deciding factor for me was the weight. Full frame lenses usually weigh double as much as APSC lenses. I know from experience if my camera gear is too heavy I'll just leave it at home, never take it on trips and use my phone instead. I highly recommend people to add the weight of the lenses before making a decision. example: A7 III + 24-105 f/4 = 1313 grams A6600 + 16-55 f/2.8 = 997 grams you can almost add an a6100 to that and weigh the same

Good video comparison. I think you missed some important points: 1. The A7C can get good results with APSC lenses. 2. The camera and 28-60 lens are only $2000 3. The 28-60 is pretty sharp. 4. The LV-28RM flash works with the A7C and the 28-60 like a treat. 5. The focus of the A7C really is compactness with FF. That's the only real reason to get this camera. Keep up the good work, will be watchin (and when can we get that 16-55/2.8 on the A7C review?) :)

Hi Arthur, thank you very much for the excellent honest review. I own now only the a6000 with some Sony native apsc lenses, like the 50 f1.8, 16-70 f4 (somewhat disappointing lens), and 55-210. I use the camera pretty much for stills. If I want to record a video clip I will do it on my smartphone. So, I thought about moving to ff, but it is really expensive. Not only because of the camera itself, which I definitely prefer the A7iii over the A7C, because I think that for photography the A7iii suites much better. The problem is the cost of the ff lenses, especially the sony native, but also if I decide to go with the new Tamrons, like 17-28 and 28-75, it will cost me some fortune, and I also want a real telephoto and some fast primes. Now, if I finally stay with the apsc, I also want an upgrade, especially because the lack of ibis on the a6000, and also more modern autofocusing system on the recent Sony cameras. But I think that a6600 doesn't justify the current price... The main obstacle that prevent me from buying the excellent Sigma trio of lenses is the lack of stabilization...I have v e r y shaky hands and I don't want to use tripod or monopod all the time, I want to shoot handheld

So many good points!!! I’ve been following this channel since Arthur’s first a6000 review. Currently owning both apsc and full frame, what I find limiting on Sony Apsc line-up is... lens choices. Full frame glass gets way more releases (including budget line-up) and it rendered apsc very disadvantageous even for the hobbyist.

Ahhhh I feel this! I feel like I have lenses I love for the a6600, but they don't seem future proof unless I stick with APSC forever. The nearly 60% MP loss you get hit with, when using an APSC lens on a FF body is not usable to me. I want to get the a7iv, and am very unsure about having a ton of lenses for the different bodies
@TVe2003 жыл бұрын
Full frame lenses on APS-C can be great and bad. Full frame lenses will never be wide on APS-C. Sony's widest prime 20 mm end up as 30 on APS-C. The 16-55 f/2.8 is better on an a6600 than any full frame zoom. APS-C lenses on full frame is not a good idea. On A7III or A7C you end up with about 10 mp. A full frame 70-300 or 100-400 is exelent on APS-C. You end up with 105-450 or 150-600.

What did you not like about the A7C?
@alexrowland3 жыл бұрын
@@JS_72020 I answered this with a comment under Arthur's video titled: "Sony A7 vs A7II vs A7III vs A7C: A Buying Guide" I'll just copy and paste it below: "TL;DR: The A7C isn't worth it, and I had a horrible experience with mine. I just want to add my experience with the A7C (I use a camera for 50% photography and 50% videography (live streaming church services every Sunday)). I started out with the A6100, then started getting full-frame envy so I looked into the A7III and A7SIII. When I saw the A7C, I was in love! The specs were perfect for what I needed, and the live eye-tracking for video really appealed to me. I sold off my A6100, APS-C lenses, and all the accessories I'd collected for it. From day 1, the A7C gave me problems. During the first live-stream, I noticed severe auto-focusing problems. The camera would randomly start to focus-breath, and at times it would even lock onto the mic in front of the person speaking (and I triple confirmed that face/eye auto-focus was enabled). We're talking about a person standing still in front of a podium, maybe 10 feet away, so there's no excuse for poor auto-focus. Amazon gave me 30 days until I had to return it, and I kept it until day 29, desperately messing with settings, trying to diagnose the auto-focus issues. It just didn't make sense that an $800 camera was blowing a $1,800 camera out of the water. I ended up going with the A6400 instead, and last Sunday I was able to fully test it during a live-stream. All the sudden my auto-focusing issues were gone, and it was locking onto faces just like I expected it to. I also want to mention I took the A7C on a hike and even using it for still frame photography, I missed focus on at least 1/3 my shots while I was looking directly at someone's face (I should also mention I was using a native Sony lens for this and the live-streaming). Maybe I simply had a faulty camera, but for my money, after using both systems, having full-frame for an extra $1k just isn't worth it, especially when the actual photo and video capabilities of the A6400 are virtually identical. EDIT: One last thing. If you're like me and currently use one of the A6000 series cameras, but the siren call of full-frame is tempting you purely for the fact that it's full-frame and that's what "real" photographers use, don't buy into that crap! A pro with an APS-C camera will always beat an amateur with a full-frame. Your experience and glass are so much more important than the size of your sensor! Arthur has shown that time and time again. Unless you have an actual, tangible reason for requiring full-frame, save your money and buy some more lenses for your current camera."

I'm glad I found this channel. As a past Canon guy, I started with a crop body (30D) and moved up to a full frame (5D mkii). I only went full frame because I came across an amazing deal. I'm not a professional by any means, so my use was mostly still shots. After time behind the 5d mkii, I didn't care much for it. Sure it had it's advantages over the 30D, but for the content I was shooting, my audience couldn't see the difference. It was big and heavy and cumbersome to take with my on trips. It sat in a bag for a few years and eventually was sold off to fund one of my other hobbies. I've been using my cellphone since and it's fine, but recently had a my first kid and now wish I had something better. I was about to jump back into a full frame, but the 6600 seems like the better fit for what I plan on using it for. The fact that video tech has come so far along since my 5d kmii, I'll use the A6600 way more and be more inclined to bring it out with me.

I decided on the A6600 when I got tired of the AF on my NEX-7. I hesitated because of the new battery, that would make my existing batteries obsolete, considering the A6400 instead. I bought a spare battery with the camera, but, unlike with the NEX and my old A900, I rarely need to worry about changing batteries. The deciding factor was IBIS that also works with my A-mount lenses - in combination with the LA-EA5 adapter. The A7C is 50 % dearer - and lens lust would set in immediately. What I need is a Sony speed booster to take advantage of wide angle A-mount lenses on APS-C.

This is a stellar review but the most important part of it is the last bit. People are so caught up in the newest thing - I’m certainly not immune - but newest doesn’t necessarily mean best. Personally, I’m looking for something for backpacking, so I need a camera that’s compact and light, performs well in low light, is weather sealed, and has great battery. So for me, the a6600 makes a lot of sense over something like the a6100, even though it’s double the price. I think most people don’t need those features though and I admire that you took the effort to point that out. I think I’m pretty settled on my choice, though I think I’ll wait until next month (July 2023) for the a6700 to be announced so that the secondary market for the a6600 hopefully drops a bit. Thanks for the video. Subbed.

Thank you, I agree with so much of what you say. I shoot mostly with the A6100 w/ 16-55mm 2.8 and Sigma 1.4 primes. I tried the A7C at B&H, I could not believe how bad the viewfinder was. I ended up buying as full frame the Nikon Z5, I am really happy with. It has a great EVF, and I have been using to with vintage MF 50mm lenses like the Pancolar and the Helios. My main gripes with the A6100 is the small. low quality EVF, the Auto ISO without minimum shutter speed. Otherwise it is great. I find the Nikon has much more pleasant colors RAW and video, feels great in the hand, lens are great and cheaper than Sony's lenses, and the stabilization is pretty good. Sony for sure has more reliable eye AF that works in all modes. But in general shooting with Nikon is a more relaxed and pleasant experience. On the A6100 I set one of the front custom buttons to shoot video, so it solves the problem of the awkward position. All these cameras are good enough to create great content. Since I enjoying taking photos, the big viewfinder is really important to have a nicer experience. The A7C feels like I am peeping into a keyhole or a pipe. Sony could give many firmware upgrades to the A7iii

Heyy really nice video!👍 do you think that in the near future we will have an apsc with more megapixels and a bigger sensor??
@NickL0VIN3 жыл бұрын
I guarantee it! I'm guessing end of this year or 2022
@professionalpotato47643 жыл бұрын
More megapixels, unlikely. Bigger sensor, no. APS-C is a fixed format size so it's not going to deviate much from the 1.5x crop size. 24MP is a pretty good sweet spot between photo and video performance. The people who need the extra megapixels for print (or other industries) would be going full-frame or medium format so the market probably doesn't exist. Also, 12MP is more than enough for the general population. Look at Chris Hau's video comparing a 100MP medium format vs the A7S3 in print. Nobody could guess the cameras correctly. Lastly, higher megapixels means that the lenses must be sharper or have more resolving power, due to the higher pixel density, which results in more expensive lenses. Which is why a lot of micro four thirds lenses are far more expensive than full frame due to the pixel density. You would literally have to sell all your lenses and wait for new G-master tier quality lenses on APS-C to get the full benefit of your higher megapixel camera.

Full frame at that resolution can at times be like two cameras in one as its apsc crop still gives you 18 megapixels. This is useful for taking photos in the outdoors where you might want an ultra light setup or the ability to crop in using a sharp full frame lens. The BSI sensor also seems to open up a lot more options in post, particularly when you want to recover shadows. Lastly, I'm a real fan of the full frame Loxia lenses which periodically turn up at bargain basement prices on the NZ version of eBay (probably because our country is too small to have a properly liquid market for such things). The a7rii is popping up at very cheap prices now too and, while it does have some shortcomings, they've never got in the way of good shot.

I'm keeping my A6000 with its kit lens and add another Tamron 28-75mm or 17-28mm. I only use camera to take pictures in Europe anyway. Since Delta variant still in the air, and I'm not going to Europe. I'll wait for another 2yrs later to pick up A7c for a lower cost. Thank you for a honest and "true to budget" review.

Great video. Really enjoyed your comments on both cameras. The best part is that you didn't try to push either one of them as opposed to many youtubers drilling on a specific camera vs the other one. Many newbies purchase cameras way above their photography knowledge therefore spending more money than necessary while ending up using the camera in full auto. I own the A7iii and recently purchased the 6600 for my upcoming trip to Yellowstone National Park to take advantage of the crop instead of buying the bigger and more expensive telephoto lenses. Thanks for your review's Arthur. I went with your advice a few years ago and started with the a6000 and kit lens. Worked my way up by getting better glass (Sigma 16mm & 56mm) which produced super sharp photos. I'm about to buy the a6600. I love the glass too much to move over to full frame and spend even more on equivalent full frame glass (I'm in South Africa and the a7iii with a kit lens goes for about $3200). After 2 years of continuous use and learning all the a6000 features, the newer technology will be welcomed.

I agree with everything you say! I use a6400 a6500 and a6600 for my photography and video work, and where if I really already notice that it is necessary to go to full frame it is especially in the photos since from 800 iso it is quite noticeable when editing the grains, in video it is less Notorious even up to 3200 iso, for that reason and only for that reason I will go to a full frame, because it does not offer better quality in general. The example of your photo comparison is the real difference that nobody shows, those grains, when editing the photo and making a crop are very powerful. I hope the google translator did a good job on my comment haha !! Greetings from Paraguay.

For a hobby and a little pro work, the a6600 is fantastic. I have it and the A7R3, which I love for it's 42 megapixel sensor. I can't see getting an expensive 24mp full frame body when the a6600 has a great 24mp sensor. It also has the great benefit of turning my 200-600mm zoom into a 300-900mm zoom. It's unreal. The thing that gets ignored in just about all of these comparisons is that the APS-C camera gives a a lense greater reach. I have a Sony 70-350 and my A6400 gives me a reach of 525mm. This to me is a huge issue as I'm not young and weight of carrying the camera on long bush walking trips is important. If I was going to upgrade my A6400 it would be to A6600 and I can use all my current lenses. Great work Arthur keep it up.
@instructormatt_3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I use the 200-600 and 70-350 with my a6600 and I love the extra reach. I'm sure full frame is great, but APS-C is more than enough for what I do.
@NickL0VIN3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, for deeper depth of field, usually lower cost, usually smaller, and further reach = APSC wins. For shallower DoF and low light, full frame wins. Nothing is better, just what's better for one's needs.
@MadPotoo3 жыл бұрын
@@NickL0VIN DOF is an optical property and sensor size has nothing to do with it. Also for low light it's better to compare pixel size rather than sensor size.
@NickL0VIN3 жыл бұрын
@@MadPotoo If you're talking about technicalities you're 100% correct. However, to keep things simple to the lay person, given the same year, the same technology, same brand, same megapixel, Full frame will always be better in low light (because of larger pixels) and produce shallower depth of field at the same focal length (because you have to stand closer to the subject if you want the same look, amongst other factors that help it look more shallow).
@MadPotoo3 жыл бұрын
@@NickL0VIN ...actually for DOF the correct comparison with crop sensor would be to apply the same crop to a FF image instead of adjusting your distance. If you stand closer, it's not just the DOF that's affected, but the distortion conferred by the lens would be different. In particular on FF things would be more stretched out and it becomes an invalid comparison. Cropping in post is the only way to compare DOF without introducing new optical variables, and in doing so the DOF would be identical.
@cankoklu3 жыл бұрын
Great review and great message at the end.. I've had the a6000 for 6+ years now, was looking at reviews to upgrade.. I agree with not needing the FF; I think the lenses are often more expensive than what you mention BTW I see equivalent lenses almost double the price for FF versions. Besides that I also figured out that upgrading to 6600 isn't worth it for me.. The sensor is still the same as 6000 and I only rarely do family videos. That being said, I'm getting tired of waiting for an upgraded APS-C sensor from Sony.. I'm halfway convinced to sell off all my gear and shift to Fuji XT4; the ergonomics and manual buttons just seem so attractive.

Had an a6000 for 5 years before upgrading to the a6600. And after owning it for almost a year I think the only thing more I've gotten out of it is the better battery. If I could have got the a6100 or a6400 with the Z battery I'd be sorted. I still have my a6000 and it takes pictures just as well as the a6600 but going back to it you can really tell the difference in build quality. I may consider the A7 IV if it ever shows up but so far APS-C works well for me. I like the compact size, smaller lenses which are also lighter on the wallet compared to full frame

Same with me. I kept my a6000 as I upgraded to a6400. IMO, for landscapes, the a6000 is more versatile than the a6400 thanks to the menory apps acting as nd filter and the in camera timelapse video composer. A shame that Sony abandoned the apps .

@@nphotodotorg2690 sure. You are the only reviewer that has not blown the Full Frame horn for everyone. I will admit that because of those comments and suggestions has kept the Full Frame bug in my ear in the 3 years I have been getting into photography. In the beginning I just wanted a camera that performed better than the camera on my smartphone; namely in low light conditions. In my opinion, even with all the camera upgrades over the years the smartphone camera system still does not compare to my Sony a6600, especially when it comes to photo editing. My photos from my a6600 just come out cleaner, more vibrant than anything that has come out of my iPhone. Something that did catch my eye between the a6600 and a7c, was when you demonstrated the picture quality in low light situations; namely the picture that included the pic of the street lamp. I noticed the halo ring around the light source was much more pronounced with the a6600 and also grain over the a7c. However, I know in Lightroom, in post edit I would be able to eliminate most of the artifacts but that is only if i take the time to do anything about it in post edit. In turn, I think that is what it really comes down to; what are you willing to spend time doing or what do you want to spend most of your time doing in post edit? Do you want to spend a little longer removing grain from your photos, or do you want a higher probability of less post edit time by choosing the more expensive Full Frame; and again like you said “it also depends on your lens choice” with the body. What walk around lens would you recommend for the a7C? I currently have the G-Master 16-55 paired with my a6600.
@FireMatePhotographic3 жыл бұрын
Another great video, as always! I love a lot of things about the a7C, but the one thing keeping me away from it and sticking to my larger full frame bodies and the a6600 is the shutter. The a7C doesn’t have an option for a fully mechanical shutter, it’s electronic first curtain only. Higher shutter speeds can mess up bokeh (and they warn about it in the manual). High speed sync with flashes can cause banding, LED lighting indoors can cause even more banding, and so on. There’s times when I really need to switch over to the fully mechanical shutter and if it’s not there as an option, that knocks the a7C out for me.

Great video and strong educational part at the end. I have an a6400 and a7iii and was considering the a7c since the ff bodies have become fatter with every generation. but the compromises you mention (evf & grip, display mechanism) would not outweigh the benefits (i am mainly a photographer). The other thing is that if one wants to profit from e.g. the lowlight performance of that ff sensor, one will need fast lenses, which tend to be larger and heavier. and the best 35/2 for sony ff is still the 24 1.4 gm on an apsc body. i would not buy the gm only for that, but if one has it anyway, it is an awesome combination with the a6400.

70-350mm is a must lens for anyone having sony APS-C camera. I have it for nearly a year with my A6400. I have a kit lens and a macro lens apart from those. But 70-350 is my always to go lens in outdoor settings. You can do landscape with it, you can do portrait with it. With effective max focal length of 525mm, you can always do bird photography with it (I primarily use it for that purpose) and though its not a dedicated macro, you will not be disappointed with its performance even in that category if the object is not very tiny.

I use an a6500. My primary lenses are the Sony 16-55mm f2.8G, the Sigma 30mm f1.4, the Sigma 56mm f1.4 and the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8. I like the results I get with this kit, which are about 80% still photography and 20% video. However, I am dissatisfied with Sony’s skin tones and would like about one F stop’s worth of better low light performance. So I would consider upgrading. But to what? The a6500 is the only Sony mirrorless body with both IBS and a built in flash, which I use frequently for fill lighting that is not overpowering. I cannot get both IBS and built in flash on any of the newer bodies. I would also like to continue to use my lenses. So I may purchase the a7riv and use it in crop mode, sacrificing the built in flash. This arguably has Sony’s best APS-C sensor, as well as outstanding full frame resolution and the new color science. But it is a major expenditure, so I am hesitating, while still obtaining fine results from the a6500. Maybe I don’t need to upgrade after all. Great video, Arthur. Do we really need the latest equipment?

I think buying A7C is better value for long term for me specially. I prefer zooms but I still want good lowlight and bokeh from the lens. I’d need a prime on APSC for that and it’s difficult to swap lenses and carry multiple primes. Whereas with A7C I’d be okay with f2.8 zoom lens which gives good lowlight as well as good bokeh without the need of carrying multiple primes and constantly switching them. I’d need many lenses on APSC which won’t make much price difference but I’d get much better camera as well as better quality lenses and much more easier to use specially for travel and run&gun uses in smaller package with just 1body&lens. The lens selection is larger on FF. For wide angles, there isn’t good lens choice on APSC either. I’m planning to buy the A7C with tamron 28-75 2.8 as my only gear which will be enough for my usage. 1800(A7C)+800(28-75 2.8)=$2600 ✅ $1300(A6600) +800(17-70 2.8) =$2300 + price of primes = nearly same as A7C but for worse camera&lenses
