You seem to have very little bias, often blunt about your opinions (such as saying stick with the equipment you got), you don't use click-baity titles, and you actually talk about negatives all the time!!! But I loved my a6500 and my a6000 before that and would recommend an APS-C to most of my hobbyist friends, especially now that Tamron has that all-in-one f/2.8 zoom. Thanks for the informative video!

Wish I saw this kinda comment more often. Cameras have been *very good* for a long time now. Latest and greatest is rarely needed. When I wanted to try mirrorless after decades of Nikon DSLRs.. Agree, APS-C is cool. Just go and buy a Fuji. To be honest Sony's APS-C segment is good only because of third party lenses. Sigma trio is great as well as tamron zoom. Maybe sony's 18-135 is useful while travelling. But combined it makes a lot of sense with a cheaper body. However, I still find that A6xxx cameras doesn't suit me. I prefer dslr style, AF-joystick and more control. Sony should have done aps-c in A7 body.

I really wish Sony will make the A7IV and A7V just like the A7C. Why? Because that bigger, higher res EVF on the A7 DOES NOT make better photos. It's just extra money they force you to spend for no picture or video quality benefit. Also, the central EVF is very annoying in that it puts your nose smack into the LCD screen greasing it up and making you uncomfortable, The A7C's smaller, cheaper, offset EVF is perfect. Now, can we get an A7C with the new 33MP sensor or even the 61MP A7R5 sensor?

Sony is annoying. Let's look at buffer: a6600 does 115 JPGs or 46 RAW released in 2019. The a6500, it's predecessor, released in 2016, does 269 JPGs or 107 RAW. Why, Sony? WHY? It's safe to say they already had a7c planned and wanted to widened the gap between their flagship APS-C and their new entry-level FF. The grip: they knew damn well they could release it with a bigger grip just like all their other latest FF bodies but held back in order to give more shine to when they magically add it to the a7cII. Sony is too comfortable sitting on top of the mirrorless mountain. Great video! And glad you're not leaving the APS-C world (yet)

I spent a month comparing cameras until i finally decided to buy the a6600 over full frame cameras. The deciding factor for me was the weight. Full frame lenses usually weigh double as much as APSC lenses. I know from experience if my camera gear is too heavy I'll just leave it at home, never take it on trips and use my phone instead. I highly recommend people to add the weight of the lenses before making a decision. example: A7 III + 24-105 f/4 = 1313 grams A6600 + 16-55 f/2.8 = 997 grams you can almost add an a6100 to that and weigh the same

I used to have an A7II for six years. Replaced it to A6400 about 2 years ago and I am very happy. Especially zoom lenses are smaller and lighter, and the difference with F1.4 primes is huge. I shoot street photography and a small sized camera and lenses is a great benefit, especially because of visibility, not only weight.

@NickL0VIN3 жыл бұрын
I guarantee it! I'm guessing end of this year or 2022
@professionalpotato47643 жыл бұрын
More megapixels, unlikely. Bigger sensor, no. APS-C is a fixed format size so it's not going to deviate much from the 1.5x crop size. 24MP is a pretty good sweet spot between photo and video performance. The people who need the extra megapixels for print (or other industries) would be going full-frame or medium format so the market probably doesn't exist. Also, 12MP is more than enough for the general population. Look at Chris Hau's video comparing a 100MP medium format vs the A7S3 in print. Nobody could guess the cameras correctly. Lastly, higher megapixels means that the lenses must be sharper or have more resolving power, due to the higher pixel density, which results in more expensive lenses. Which is why a lot of micro four thirds lenses are far more expensive than full frame due to the pixel density. You would literally have to sell all your lenses and wait for new G-master tier quality lenses on APS-C to get the full benefit of your higher megapixel camera.

Hi Arthur, thank you very much for the excellent honest review. I own now only the a6000 with some Sony native apsc lenses, like the 50 f1.8, 16-70 f4 (somewhat disappointing lens), and 55-210. I use the camera pretty much for stills. If I want to record a video clip I will do it on my smartphone. So, I thought about moving to ff, but it is really expensive. Not only because of the camera itself, which I definitely prefer the A7iii over the A7C, because I think that for photography the A7iii suites much better. The problem is the cost of the ff lenses, especially the sony native, but also if I decide to go with the new Tamrons, like 17-28 and 28-75, it will cost me some fortune, and I also want a real telephoto and some fast primes. Now, if I finally stay with the apsc, I also want an upgrade, especially because the lack of ibis on the a6000, and also more modern autofocusing system on the recent Sony cameras. But I think that a6600 doesn't justify the current price... The main obstacle that prevent me from buying the excellent Sigma trio of lenses is the lack of stabilization...I have v e r y shaky hands and I don't want to use tripod or monopod all the time, I want to shoot handheld

I think buying A7C is better value for long term for me specially. I prefer zooms but I still want good lowlight and bokeh from the lens. I’d need a prime on APSC for that and it’s difficult to swap lenses and carry multiple primes. Whereas with A7C I’d be okay with f2.8 zoom lens which gives good lowlight as well as good bokeh without the need of carrying multiple primes and constantly switching them. I’d need many lenses on APSC which won’t make much price difference but I’d get much better camera as well as better quality lenses and much more easier to use specially for travel and run&gun uses in smaller package with just 1body&lens. The lens selection is larger on FF. For wide angles, there isn’t good lens choice on APSC either. I’m planning to buy the A7C with tamron 28-75 2.8 as my only gear which will be enough for my usage. 1800(A7C)+800(28-75 2.8)=$2600 ✅ $1300(A6600) +800(17-70 2.8) =$2300 + price of primes = nearly same as A7C but for worse camera&lenses

Good video comparison. I think you missed some important points: 1. The A7C can get good results with APSC lenses. 2. The camera and 28-60 lens are only $2000 3. The 28-60 is pretty sharp. 4. The LV-28RM flash works with the A7C and the 28-60 like a treat. 5. The focus of the A7C really is compactness with FF. That's the only real reason to get this camera. Keep up the good work, will be watchin (and when can we get that 16-55/2.8 on the A7C review?) :)

I use an a6500. My primary lenses are the Sony 16-55mm f2.8G, the Sigma 30mm f1.4, the Sigma 56mm f1.4 and the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8. I like the results I get with this kit, which are about 80% still photography and 20% video. However, I am dissatisfied with Sony’s skin tones and would like about one F stop’s worth of better low light performance. So I would consider upgrading. But to what? The a6500 is the only Sony mirrorless body with both IBS and a built in flash, which I use frequently for fill lighting that is not overpowering. I cannot get both IBS and built in flash on any of the newer bodies. I would also like to continue to use my lenses. So I may purchase the a7riv and use it in crop mode, sacrificing the built in flash. This arguably has Sony’s best APS-C sensor, as well as outstanding full frame resolution and the new color science. But it is a major expenditure, so I am hesitating, while still obtaining fine results from the a6500. Maybe I don’t need to upgrade after all. Great video, Arthur. Do we really need the latest equipment?

One thing you didn't mention is that you can use full frame lenses on an apsc cameras wich is awesome for future upgrades. But for beginners like me a 6100 is just enough. I also have to much invested in E lenses like the Sony 70-350, Sony 18-105, Sigma 18-50 2.8, Sigma 16mm 1.4, and Sigma 56mm 1.4. I’m still leaning how to be a better photographer everyday and love my hobby!

Really interesting comparison, thanks Arthur! Guess I'll stick with my old A6300 and "just" get better lenses (my desired SEL 70-350mm is still $800 after a year!) quite a chunk of money considering that the A6300 itself was that price back in 2018 when I got it.

70-350mm is a must lens for anyone having sony APS-C camera. I have it for nearly a year with my A6400. I have a kit lens and a macro lens apart from those. But 70-350 is my always to go lens in outdoor settings. You can do landscape with it, you can do portrait with it. With effective max focal length of 525mm, you can always do bird photography with it (I primarily use it for that purpose) and though its not a dedicated macro, you will not be disappointed with its performance even in that category if the object is not very tiny.

You forgot the boutique Zeiss and Leica lenses which have amazing sharp, yet smooth gentle defocussed transitions. If you are using regular zooms, then I would say no difference at all. Even if you print large (because of the same MP difference), there is no difference. I have an a6100 and an OG A7r. The A7r with Zeiss lense looks so much better than the a6100 with kit 12-60, but the 4k video on the a6100 is just amazing. For travel, I will probably stick with my a6100 with kit lense or get the Zeiss equivalent 16-70. I just went on a 2 week trip to Paris in the wintertime and only brought my Samsung S22 Ultra with 100MP mode and Ai photo enhancing. It was more than adequate. Even with a small sensor, the Ai (multiple low light merged shots) were not that grainy and all people shots have evenly lit faces. Ai also merged shots so that no skies were blown out. Plus, all my shots were available for sharing as soon as Google photos backed them up. I would say that an S22 Ultra is almost at the level of an RX100, but fits better in your pocket and I do have an RX100 1 and 5. I do wish I had brought my a6100 for capturing more printable shots, but looking at my S22 Ultra gallery, I don't find them lacking much at all. Actually, if I don't need 4k, (or ultra compactness), I should've brought my A7r clean 36MP with Zeiss lens for that smooth yet sharp shots that I wanted to take.

A Full frame bsi sensor is such a better option for photography. I agree with the conclusion of not buying either camera and saving money on an older a6 model but that’s only if you’re trying to get the most specs for the least amount of money. Sony is a technology company first, and the technical improvements put inside the A7C make it very compelling, even at the retail price.

The biggest issue with the a6100 in Australia is that they cost over $1,000AUD and I might as well pay the extra $200 and get the A6400 Body. The Sony A7III is still $2,000AUD (USED) At the least. Sony a6000 is worth $500-$700 on the used market still. So the Australian market is screwed. Sucks for me since I been wanting to switch to Sony for a bit now

For a hobby and a little pro work, the a6600 is fantastic. I have it and the A7R3, which I love for it's 42 megapixel sensor. I can't see getting an expensive 24mp full frame body when the a6600 has a great 24mp sensor. It also has the great benefit of turning my 200-600mm zoom into a 300-900mm zoom. It's unreal. But the R3 is for things when I want the extra pixels but for most of the time, I grab my a6600. We fall for the hype too much today.

So many good points!!! I’ve been following this channel since Arthur’s first a6000 review. Currently owning both apsc and full frame, what I find limiting on Sony Apsc line-up is... lens choices. Full frame glass gets way more releases (including budget line-up) and it rendered apsc very disadvantageous even for the hobbyist.

Ahhhh I feel this! I feel like I have lenses I love for the a6600, but they don't seem future proof unless I stick with APSC forever. @TVe2003 жыл бұрын
Full frame lenses on APS-C can be great and bad. Full frame lenses will never be wide on APS-C. Sony's widest prime 20 mm end up as 30 on APS-C. The 16-55 f/2.8 is better on an a6600 than any full frame zoom. APS-C lenses on full frame is not a good idea. On A7III or A7C you end up with about 10 mp. A full frame 70-300 or 100-400 is exelent on APS-C. You end up with 105-450 or 150-600.
@jdonalds20013 жыл бұрын
APSC is a tradeoff decision. The one major advantage of FF is better low light performance. Frankly I just don't take many shots in low light. An APSC camera is less expensive, lighter, smaller, and the lenses are cheaper. I have a 6600 and 6400. I have no need or desire to move to FF.

Had an a6000 for 5 years before upgrading to the a6600. And after owning it for almost a year I think the only thing more I've gotten out of it is the better battery. I still have my a6000 and it takes pictures just as well as the a6600 but going back to it you can really tell the difference in build quality. The protrusion of the evf, the materials used (especially on the grip), and the overall tactile feel of this body kept me away from considering it. But in may opinion, if video is not your priority, don't buy the A7C. At is the worst choice for photography. An A7iii would be better or a used A7Rii, if you can find one cheap enough.

@hecull23 жыл бұрын
You didn't tell the full story when talking about low light performance. Take those low light images from both cameras and bump the exposure considerably in Lightroom. The A7C will have much more discernable detail in the shadows with considerably less noise. The lower noise and better dynamic range of full frame cameras can be very useful to some photographers. That being said, I 100% agree that aps-c is the better option for for 90% of today's still photographers. The manufacturers and their associated influencers and fans want to tell you that it's full frame or nothing. I contend that good pictures come from good photographers shooting good subjects with adequate gear. An a6000 with the Sigma trio and the 70-350 G will cost less in total than many full frame bodies alone, and will cover almost anything a photographer wants to shoot. Add in a 10-18, the Tamron 17-70, and Tamron 70-180 and you have a very complete kit. I shudder to think of how much it would cost if all that gear was FF.

I bought a spare battery with the camera, but, unlike with the NEX and my old A900, I rarely need to worry about changing batteries. The deciding factor was IBIS that also works with my A-mount lenses - in combination with the LA-EA5 adapter. The A7C is 50 % dearer - and lens lust would set in immediately. What I need is a Sony speed booster to take advantage of wide angle A-mount lenses on APS-C.

Another great video, as always! I love a lot of things about the a7C, but the one thing keeping me away from it and sticking to my larger full frame bodies and the a6600 is the shutter. The a7C doesn’t have an option for a fully mechanical shutter, it’s electronic first curtain only. Higher shutter speeds can mess up bokeh (and they warn about it in the manual). High speed sync with flashes can cause banding, LED lighting indoors can cause even more banding, and so on. There’s times when I really need to switch over to the fully mechanical shutter and if it’s not there as an option, that knocks the a7C out for me.

For me I'm an artist and I feel I need the most information I can get out of a camera. There are visual differences using a full frame over an APS-C and this video has covered it already. The differences lies in pixel peeping and more light for shallower depth of field. The differences is minimum and not even noticeable unless putting it side by side. I think I'm gonna stick with it for a long time, but I'm probably start buying full-frame lenses from now on, so that I have an upgrade path to the a7C II or the a7IV/a7 V when I decide to upgrade the body. For now, between all the lockdowns, I'm finding hard to use the camera for what I originally intended to. The a7C is basically an a7 III with some downgrades, which is basically why I consider it overpriced. IMHO the Canon Rp is still the better buy for full-frame photographers on a budget, with the 50mm 1.8. Personally, I’m looking for something for backpacking, so I need a camera that’s compact and light, performs well in low light, is weather sealed, and has great battery. So for me, the a6600 makes a lot of sense over something like the a6100, even though it’s double the price. I think most people don’t need those features though and I admire that you took the effort to point that out. I think I’m pretty settled on my choice, though I think I’ll wait until next month (July 2023) for the a6700 to be announced so that the secondary market for the a6600 hopefully drops a bit.
