@@mikesphotography Oh it got complex 🤦 I have an A7rii...want to get into pet photography so need faster AF and animal eye AF. But also love the croppability of this 42mp sensor. Plus the photo quality is so damn amazing. So finally...decided to hang on and wait for used A7IVs to pop up in the market next year, didn't seem worth the effort to do a half-upgrade right now just for the AF!
@mikesphotography

Lol, picking a camera is always a hard decision to make. That sounds like a good choice though. The A7iv focussing system is fantastic and the evf has had an upgrade, so photographing animals will work really well with that camera. 👍

And if you don't mind losing your data after hours of shooting/recording get the A7C, if you don't need HSS for flash photography, if you will not be holding the camera because of poor ergonomics, if you don't need an EVF, if you don't mind getting stuck with a camera that will be outdated in the next 3-6 months, then by all means the A7C is your baby.. If you only want video capabilities, I see no reason spending so much on FF when you can do so at a way lower cost on an APC or even the sony REX cameras. I wish to own a sony but it's a scary investment. I will play it safe by sticking with my Nikon d850 and look forward to getting the z6ii. BTW, this is the best and more detailed comparison I think I seen after Gerald Undone... plus, Mike is the best photography teacher on youtube..
@mikesphotography

Interesting points Josh. Would be interesting to find out more about these...I just tested the godox AD200 and HSS works with that... The more concerning one of your points is the losing your data after shooting...is this because you've heard of the camera not saving data properly or because it only has one card slot? I think this would be a good camera for someone who wants a full frame now but has little girly hands or for the occasional videographer...for anyone who already has a full frame, it isn't worth the extra investment, unless they are looking for a smaller second camera...then it would be worth waiting for the A7iv. Changing brands is always a tricky decision to make...when I switched from canon to sony, it took me a while to decide whether I'd made the right decision or not, especially after owning the fantastic canon 70-200mm f2.8 mkii and seeing the price of the sony equivalent... Great to hear your thoughts on it though. 😁👍

@@LUITESLIFE You're right. That's why I am still considering getting a Sony ff and for Sony's color. However Sony's E-mount was originally designed for APS-C cameras and in maybe some years from now, sony might consider doing what Nikon did. For now will hold on to my DSLR until I get a clear picture of where the mirrorless technology is going.

This video has softened my opinion of the a7C, the autofocus pulling looks a lot more natural for one, and the other firmware improvements do look nice too... I was never considering switching from my a7iii to it, but when the rumours were of a $1200 body and only the Ronin SC existed, I was getting kind of excited about getting one as a video focused 2nd body that wouldn't have a protruding EVF that fouls the gimbal roll motor. Fortunately DJI fixed that issue with the RSC2, so I ended up getting that, and even though I still don't like that it was easy for people to get a new a7iii body only for $1600 or so, this is $1800 and retailers have put the a7iii back up to $2k, I don't mind it quite as much - still don't like the front wheel removal or EVF for it to be a replacement to my a7iii though. These two remind me of the G85/GX85 differences but with the screen types switched around... I can't wait to see what the a7iv ends up like.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
It definitely is a more videocentric camera than the a7iii and if you're after a second body, this would do the trick. I got it primarily to sit on the tripod for my talking to camera pieces for these videos and online courses...but I'm using it for a lot more than that and it has really grown on me...it's not groundbreaking...but it has a lot of cool features that are fantastic for videographers... Thanks for watching 😁👍

Tbh for me personally - since I don't have a lot of money - price was the deciding factor. I got the A7III for about 1500, which is 600 less than the A7C. I got the A7III with a Sigma Art 24-70 lens for 2100. This was an unbeatable price for me. Otherwise I would have gone for the A7C. For flippy-screen and comfort of use I will stick to my beloved Canon M50. Great and very detailed video!

Very thorough comparison. The max 1/4000 shutter speed on the A7C puts it immediately on my do-not-recomend-to-friends list as this would preclude them to ever use f1.8 glass wide open without recurring to ND filters even with ISO set to 50 (sunny country here).
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point Afonso...In that direct sunlight you'd definitely have to stop it down a little with the aperture or use an ND filter...but in reality, it's only one stop of light between 1/4000 and 1/8000 second. Thanks for watching. 😁👍

I've yet to see anyone mention this but one thing that the A7C has that the A7iii does NOT is Imaging Edge Desktop over Wi-Fi and background FTP transfer. The only other cameras that do this are the A7R iv, A9 ii and A7S iii. It can be quite handy for studio work or even having a small laptop nearby to review raw files on shoot.

Oh man, that was great! I've been asking everyone about customizing the record button and I'm so glad they included that. Great to see the slight menu improvements as well. Great video Mike. It would be really interesting if you could to a stills rolling shutter test to see how well it performs under artificial light and how slow of a shutter speed you have to use to eliminate banding. I would be also interesting to see if compressed mode or if any 12bit vs 14 bit can improve silent shutter performance. No other reviewer has addressed this yet.

Lol! I really like the A7C but I do miss a few of the features from the A7iii, like the extra buttons and the extra dial, as well as a much better evf and the ability to go up to 1/8000s instead of 1/4000. That one stop on the fast end does make quite a difference. Hello Mike! Great review! I’m torn between the A7iii and the A7C. The sale will end on the 31st, I have 4 more days. I will use it mainly for stills, photos (family portrait, weddings), never done video work. I love A7c’s flip screen and compact size and new AF but only 1 card slot, I heard a lot of people that after doing so many weddings their SD card never failed. I love A7iii’s 2 card slot and bigger EVF, but I felt like it’s too heavy for me (coming from a6000).
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
I hope you made the right decision and got in on the sale! Coming from the A6000, the A7C would be best for you. I've never had an SD card fail on me and I used to shoot some all day video tutorials for some big companies. I had 4 cameras filming for about 4-5 hours a day for weeks at a time and never once had a failure. I think as long as you format them in camera so the camera sets them up as it wants, you shouldn't have a problem...also buy decent SD cards as well, not the cheap ones. You can also set up the FTP function in the A7C so it backs up your photos as you go to your phone, or an FTP site. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4SWnK2sgMiLkMk&t Thanks for watching 😁👍

At 6:54, what is even better that the A7C got rid of the silly SCN mode and replaced it with one more custom mode, which is absolutely brilliant, just configure your 1,2, 3 modes to your preferences, and you will never go back to PASM. The Dynax 7 had three custom modes two in 2000.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
The one thing I don't like about the custom modes is that they don't update automatically. SO if you're shooting through the day and you change your aperture, shutter speed or ISO, then click to another mode for a while and then back to that custom mode, it will revert to the settings you had when you first set it up. It would be so much better if it just remembered your principle settings from the last time you were in that mode...then that would make it so much more useable for me.

@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Rylan! That's a tough one. I've been using the A7C for photography now for the past month and it is really growing on me. The flippy screen is actually great for photography for low down and high up shots and also being discreet and shooting from the hip...Also if you have the lenses with the buttons on the side, I've started customising these to my dial where I can switch quickly to a different dial setup, so now, I have all of my principle settings all in easy reach... For travel, the A7C is a little better but not my much...as it's only 100g lighter and only missing the bulbous EVF on the top. If you can find an A7iii at a bargain, I'd get that, but if they are the same price, I'd go for the A7C... Thanks for watching. 😁👍

Great video I'm looking forward to buy the A7C next week with Tamron 28-75 G2 lens. That lens provides us to customise the focus ring to our preference like RF lenses. What lens would you suggest for this camera. I'm looking for a good cheap lens that can get me started with Full frame and also good for photo and video.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 жыл бұрын
If I was just getting this, I'd get the wide angle tamron 17-28mm, the 50mm 1.8 and a telephoto, like the 70-200mm. But it all depends on what you are photographing/filming. When I first started out, I had the kit lens for a long time, then I bought a 50mm f1.8, then over the years i got more lenses as I could afford them. Photography is about building up your kit slowly because as you develop, you'll have different preferances. I started with zooms, then went to primes and now I'm moving back to zooms again. For video, I mostly use the 17-28mm and the 50mm. That will pretty much cover everything you'll need.

No worries, I hope it has helped. In photo modes and 1080p video, the backscreen still turns off when a hdmi is connected, which is really annoying. As for the lens button, you can't set aperture to it, but you can set a custom "my dial" setting where you can switch the dial functions on the back of the camera, so with a press and hold of this button, you can shift the aperture to one of the back dials that you might not have it assigned to. DOes that make sense?

Looking to upgrade, kinda deciding between the E-mount and L-mount. L-mount because I'm trying to get deeper in the video industry and Panasonic is the only manufacturer now that has respectable video in a mirrorless (not counting the A7Siii - that's out of my budget). Unfortunately AF performance is so bad, even in stills. Sigma AF performance for the L-mount is poor. The L-mount alliance is a joke, and Sigma is more of a E-mount alliance company if anything, since almost all mirrorless lenses were developed based on the E-mount protocol first. That said, Sony has proven they can put 10 bit in their bodies, but who knows when the A7iv will come, and whether it will even have 10 bit. The A7C is tempting just for the improved autofocus. I do hate the ergonomics, but I wonder if it's a price I have to pay while I slowly invest into the E-mount for the A7iv. For a video-centric full frame, I really wished they had something like Panasonic, where you can scroll through white balance kelvin instead of shooting white balance cards, which is horribly slow and cumbersome on the A7Sii and A7iii. I just want it on a customizable dial.

Yes, the focussing system in the panasonics is pretty rubbish. I watch a few travel vloggers and the ones that shoot with the GH5 really do struggle with their focussing on a regular basis...as soon as I see the focussing hunting around or just sitting on the background, I say to my wife, I bet they are using a gh5...and 9/10 that is exactly what they are using. It's a shame as the panasonics are fantastic cameras apart from the focussing. The focussing system in the A7C is good...and yes, let's hope they give us 10 bit in the A7iv... I think it will be released around June/July 2021...but I could be completely out on this one... Thanks for watching. 😁👍

Is the lack of a joystick a dealbreaker? I've never used Sony's full frame bodies before, but coming from the APS-C line where I like using Zone focus area it can be cumbersome to have to use the d-pad to move the focus area around. I feel like the joystick is a major improvement and one of the things I was looking forward to most about the full frame bodies. @mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 жыл бұрын
By "shooting" do you mean, photography or videography? If I don't have the AC on my A7C does overheat after about 30 minutes of constant filming, but it is 35 degrees here with about 85% humidity, so that does take it's toll, but for shooting documentaries, short films and tutorials, it is fine...and also, filming in normal climates!! 😆 I've filmed a lot of weddings and it really does test your gear like no other...I used to shoot with 3 GH4s and the A7sii for the low light stuff, all cameras had just one card slot and I never lost a single shot...as long as you buy good quality SD cards from a reputable dealer, format them properly and be careful with them, they will last...and multi-angle shoots with a second shooter means that if any card was to fail, there would be other angles to use. At the end of the day, they are both great cameras and produce good quality video and photos. 👍

@@mikesphotography I'm shooting videos in weddings and the temperatures in peak season are very high. This summer we had 40C+ and we shoot for very long time. Overheating on the a6000 was a joke. It was overheating in about 20 minutes of continuous recording and after a stressful workday I replaced it with a VG-30 which has served me nicely since ~2015 until last month. Also having b-roll cams is rare because of the budget being limited. I've had one accident with an SD card a photographer gave me. It was a Lexar and just stopped recording during the ceremony and I quickly removed it, inserted my own and I kept going. Thankfully the footage until then it was OK.

@@perseusarkouda Oh wow, in those temperatures, most of the modern mirrorless and dslrs would probably overheat. Now shooting 1080p in a 4k camera and hoping to not face the same problem as the older compact cameras had. However VG-30 still has a place in my bag just in case. I just wish instead of more compact cameras Sony would focus to more reliable cameras. I'm reading even a7S III or even more the FX3 (with it's internal fan) has temperature issues on video in high ambient temps. I just got a7iii but i am torn between gm 16-35 vs tamron 28-75 vs sigma 24-70mm. they are all f2.8 - So confused as what to buy!

Thanks Arshad. 👍 Once I get my hands on both of those lenses, I'll definitely do a review. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I just picked up the A7C and the Sigma 24 -70 2.8. Question: What do we do for an Intervalometer? I'm wondering if they make a USB C or bluetooth model . . .
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
There's an inbuilt intervalometer so you don't need one. 👍 Tab 1, 3/14, interval shoot function. I use that all the time for timelapses and it's great. Thanks for watching. 😁👍

@@mikesphotography Thank you, good info! But, what about long exposures?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
That's the only thing they haven't addressed ... So annoying as in theory it should be pretty straight forward for them to have a feature where you set the exposure time... The sony Bluetooth remote works in the bulb mode...you press it once to open the shutter and then press it a second time to close the shutter. Hopefully some third party companies will come out with some USBC remotes soon. 👍

Good question. It seems quieter, so I have to bump up the levels from 1 to 6 in camera from a rode NTG3 going through a juiced link preamp.

Fair and balanced post, Mike! Well done.👍 Have A6600 and A72, will wait for A74. A6 type dials/wheels can be vexing, especially accidentally changing ISO when rotating wheel; definitely need front and rear dials. Bummer on lack of multi-port, and poorer IBIS. The one SD card is only type 1, yes? Flippy screen is good; when shooting portrait orientation; do you have option to display settings info in portrait orientation as well?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul! I'm definitely looking forward to the a74 release...I reckon it'll be march-june next year (but I could be completely out on that!! 😆). It does feel like they've taken the brains and body of the a6600 and put in a full frame lens...yep, it's a type 1 port, and I haven't found a portrait orientation for settings...although that would be quite cool if it switched everything in the portrait orientation. 😁👍

I want a full fram video camera coming from the a6400 cant afford a7siii so i looked into a73 and a7c,, the only thing that scares me is the lack of stabilisation since its so light
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same boat, I couldn't justify spending all that money on the A7siii at the moment. The A7C is the little brother of the A7siii and comes pretty close. I haven't found any problems with the weight either ... and with stabilisation, the gyro data is fantastic and really does make handheld shooting without a gimbal a viable option. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Will the A7III have a firmware upgrade to allow one to disable timed video.

Hey Mike, is there a ‘My Dial’ function in the a7c menu like in a6400?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kalych, yes there is but it is only for the two dials on the camera, not the exposure compensation dial...it would have been great if the expo comp dial had been a blank dial like on the A6400, then it could have been included in this menu option. Thanks for watching. 😁👍

Great video. I am planning to buy a camera for doing KZbin videos(B rolls) and travelling. I would take some photos and videos. I am confused between A73 or 7c. Kindly advise.

If you're mainly going to be shooting video and travelling, I'd go with the A7C. The gyro stabilisation in Catalyst browse is really good and when combined with a gimbal it is fantastic! you're losing a few custom buttons, one dial and the joystick, but you're gaining a much better autofocusing system, the flippy screen and that gyro data. 👍

Really appreciate your inputs. I am currently having Canon 700D DSLR camera and I see it struggles with auto focus issues. So kind of annoying to do any kind of tech videos as it does focus hunting and its quite bad. So my requirement would be to shoot product tech videos and photos for my hobby. So kind flip screen is a deal. So would you help to advise on R6 VS 7C? With an decent lens

I'd still go for the a7c. It's just a stable unit with no overheating issues and solid 4k as well as 1080p...and a really good dynamic range 😁👍

If you're on a budget, stick with the kit lens and maybe get a 50mm 1.8 from sony for that really nice shallow depth of focus look. Mid range budget: The Tamron lenses are great for what they cost. I'd get the 17-28mm and then the 70-180mm...both fantastic image quality and light for the range they give you...and then the 55mm 1.8 to fill the gap. If you have lots of money, the 16-35mm and the 70-200mm f2.8 lenses are amazing...but soooo expensive. 👍

I really love the a7c. The only issue i have with it is the, resale value. I’m afraid in another few years when i upgrade. The value drops drastically or the demand is low for this camera.
