Sony A7iii: Still Relevant in 2024? | 5 Years After Release

Now that 2024 is here, let's see if the Sony A7iii is still a good option and is good value compared to the newer generation cameras out there. I have used the Sony A73 for over 2 years now and can say I have a good idea whether it will be a good option for those who want to up their game, whilst on a budget.

Im often confused by the 8 bit vs 10 bit argument. I understand that 10 bit is way more colours, therefore "easier" to correct/grade...........Easier. I was watching some of Peter Mckinnon's earlier videos. They were shot on his Canon 5d mk2 i think. And the B-roll is sharp, cinematic, dramatic, emotive, impactful and crystal clear on my 65inch TV. And most definitely 8-Bit. No banding, no artifacts. Im still very new to photography/videography, so i probably dont know what im talking about.....but i do keep asking myself "just how good does it have to be?" If you watch the same video, on two 75 inch monitors, side by side, one at 8-bit and one at 10-bit im sure youd see a difference. But who does that? Im curious, if i showed those same videos on just one monitor, an hour apart.......would you still notice the differences? Love my a7iii by the way.

No you wouldn't be able to see them side by side. The same argument can be made for 1080p vs 4k - both are sharp side by side. Like 4k, 10 bit allows for more flexibility in post. It has more colour depth which gives you broader options in colour grading decisions, and unlike the a7iii which can't be graded too much (which it starts falling apart) the a7iv allows that further flexibility. You can definitely still colour grade on the a7iii, but you're very limited on how much. Also Peter McKinney is like a camera wizard I have no idea how he gets his stuff looking so awesome haha

8 Bit vid gets crushed in colour grading, other then that the a7iii is still a beast of a camera for all of my work.

100%, A7iii will always hold a spot in my heart for its work horse capabilities

If you shoot in HLG3 it still keeps some dynamic range, and it doesn’t fall apart when color grading. Maybe not for professional work but I think it’s still good for KZbin

Dynamic range is great on this camera naturally and in log, but the 8 bit doesn't respond well when adding luts or adjusting any colours, but yes still fantastic for KZbin!

Im selling a6400 for a a7IV, i hope it would be much better with a video performance, because i need that slo-mo 4k in 60fps and with photography it`s a great camera too.

It will be a huge upgrade! Pair it with a nice lense and you have yourself an amazing setup
