Thank you for that, I bought an A7 iv to replace my A99ii, which is a fantastic camera, but sadly the last of a line. I got the LAEA5 adapter so I could carry on using my collection of A-mount lenses, including lots of cheap Minolta lenses. The A7 iv has been great. The low-light performance is amazing. You can shoot a little bird in the shadows at ISO 12,800 and get a good image, With good post to reduce noise, even better. Then the A7R v came out to rave reviews and I got a sad case of buyer's remorse. Your review fixed that.

I shoot content for band, and the images I capture are viewed only on social media (and likely mostly on phones). So as much as I would LOVE to have an A7RV, my A7III is perfectly capable. It is good enough that I just bought a second body from the used market. The money I have "saved" I put into lenses, lighting, etc.

@@user-eu2me4bp7j for the same money a9, but a7iii basically a gimped a9 so. A used a7iii can be had for under 1k. Minimal difference between the two. A9 is sports oriented.

@few boys cooking channel Outdoors in daylight, honestly an iPhone would be more than sufficient. Heck, the phone works pretty well in low light. The only real reasons to use a full frame mirrorless camera would be if you wanted/needed the flexibility of different lenses (wider or longer, brighter/faster). Don't worry about so much about the video; anything can do it. Put your attention on audio, because _that_ is what will make your content better.

Great commentary on the comparison between these two. I'm in the same boat. Got the A7IV and have been happy with it. Yes I like this new camera but don't really need it. And tired of all the money lost when selling used gear. Going to wait for the next round of either A1 or A7c.

Thank you for doing this comparison, I swear you read my mind! I was thinking the same thing when Sony trotted out the A7R5, it's expensive, but love the flip out screen (I have the A7R4 and wish it had the flip out screen), that said was thinking get instead of the A7IV because of the flip out screen, I think the R5's new additions however make it a good upgrade, I shoot mainly landscapes, the 8 stop stabilization is intriguing, as well as the new pix shift. Thnx again!

I started taking photos in the early 80's using my brand new Canon AE1P. Then in the early early 2002 I purchased a brand new digital Nikon D100. All the photojournalist were super jealous. Since then I've used the D200 and D800. And...now I'm looking to purchase either the Sony A7RV or the A7IV. Photography is just a hobby to me. Sold my Fuji xh1 for a A7iv and very happy with Sony. Only things I missed from my xh1 is bring able to go beyond 30s with a lead and focus bracketing. Staying with A7iv.

I think I’ll get the a7iv. As long as I can use the power bank to shoot continuous videos indoors, I don’t think heating will be a problem. I wish Sony did put fans in there, like Panasonic did with the GH6 to blow heat out of the camera when shooting videos. The a7rv is cool. 61mp on the sensor is always nice, you’ll get sharper images coming out of that camera. No one watches 8K on any platform. 4K isn’t huge deal still yet, even in late 2022. 1080p is still the standard. I only shoot 4K for crisp quality as it looks nicer. People watch content mainly on their phones, can’t see 4K on a tiny 6” iPhone screen. It’ll be a while before anyone watches 8K. 8K can be used for cropping to get sharp, close up images in post to be viewable on KZbin.

4k has long been the bare minimum and is cheap (~200 dollars for a low end 4k display). 1080p is a joke and anyone using it shouldn't be taken seriously. 1080p in 2022, which was the basic affordable resolution in 2007, is like using a 50mhz processor from 1992 when quad cores came out in 2007. Also, you've demonstrated that you don't understand the basics of how technology works. Since you hold a phone close to your face you can actually see the flaws of low resolution even easier on them.

I have got my eye on the A7 iv for a while. Looking at the A7 release history the R and non R variant are released pretty close to each other. I am torn between waiting a bit for the V or get the 4 now on a discount.

Yeah! You got a very good point dude! I use an A7iii now and will buy an A7iv sometime this year and keep my A7iii as my second camera cause it still takes awesome pics. Human eye don’t evolve at the rate of the technology so there is no reason to buy the latest model just for the sake of having the newest toy in your bag!

I’ve had the a74 randomly overheat on me on 3 occasions during regular 4k60 recording. I’ve tried to replicate it but I can’t pinpoint the cause its just literally random. In my personal experience, not a reliable camera (depending on what/where you shoot)

The only thing I really care about is the EVF. I tried an A1 and that is what makes the difference for me. It is like when in the old days looking through a 35mm top level camera and looking through a Hasselblad 500/

While I will be "upgrading" from an A7IV to the R5, I appreciate the video and your take on why that might not be for everyone. The 7IV is a great camera and for the price it gets into excellent territory. I'm in the YOLO camp, however. Middle age will do that to you 😞

Great review, I am deciding between these cameras at the moment, but I am leaning toward the A7RV just for the significant improvement when paired with my 100-400GM or 200-600 for wildlife. And I agree that 60mp doesnt mean you crop in 50% and get the same quality photo as compared to the A7IV, but it does still give me more options with my prime lenses, especially the 24 1.4 GM to crop in a lot more

I'm waiting for more Sony cameras to inherit the a7RV's 8 stop of stabilization and the excellent multi articulating screen. But the price jump from when I bought from a7RIII is what's keeping me back. I'll probably hold and see what the a7CII offers. The 8 stop is useful for travel videos. I use my cameras mostly for travel.

sadly, the ZV-E1 didnt inherit the screen or the ibis, I think that will be reserved for only the high end models like the A7v, Siv, A1 mk ii, A9 mk iii.

Been on my a7iii about 3 years, needless I kinda been wanting to upgrade to a more portrait camera like the R series, but after I tested out the a7 r IV, I thought it would be a major waste of money cause I barley noticed the differences, I’m still waiting to jump but the jump has to be a major shift in quality. I more then likely might just jump the the A7IV since I can save money and get fixes from the problems from the A7iii.

The A7iv is a major jump unlike the R4. Shift in quality will be unlikely, cameras are near their limits, bigger sensor if you want noticeable increase in quality.

I own the a7iv I think at the very least they could reduce the 4K 60 crop to like 1.2x 1.3x or 1.4x instead of 1.5x they did a smaller crop for the a7rv so I don’t see why they couldn’t reduce on the a7iv it’s the very least they could do to help them and there customers or maybe remove or make a mark 2 I reckon if we work together they will have to listen and make a change and with your large platform and influence would really help if you could spread the idea around thx

That screen alone makes it worth the upgrade. I can't tell you how many times I try to flip out the bottom of the screen only to be frustrated that it doesn't do it. I came from Fuji and those screens were perfect for photography. I prefer the flippy screen on my FX3, but the A7iv is driving me nuts. I can't be the only one.

coming from a tilt screen, you can get use to it, but it takes time, months even. The A7R5 screen is like second nature assuming it's anything like the panasonic gh6, extremely useful and easy to use.

Alternatives for both the A7RV and A7IV for still photography are the cheaper Sony A7RIVA (same 60 megapixels sensor as A7RV) and Sony A7RIII (42 megapixels). I had the A7RIII and can recommend it ! I have now the A7RIV and A7RIVA and can highly recommend them, you get two cameras in one Camera with 60 megapixels because you can crop to APSC mode of you always need high resolution. I NEVER do video, so I wish Sony will make a still photography Camera !!!. For me there are only two improvements in the A7RV, the EVF and the IBIS, I do not like the new flip-out screen, I rarely use the screen.

I'm leaning towards upgrading to RV but the IV is €2450 now... I did a nifty giftcard trick at a big camera store to get €500 in giftcards so it will cost me €1950, then sell my A7III for 1250 and the new IV will be like €700 and I get over €400 taxes back... Practically a free camera now that I've typed all of this I can see what I will buy next.

Couple things that weren't mentioned and important for many users is ISO performance and dynamic range. A7IV crushes the A7RV in those aspects.

fondamentalmente hanno aggiunto due cose molto interessanti ma hanno tralasciato la cosa più importante e che tutti i possessori di a7rIV si aspettavano : la resa ad alti ISO! in una fotocamera dedicata al portrait e paesaggistica direi che era il minimo che potevano e dovevano fare, e invece sono andati ad implemementare funzioni e caratteristiche che addirittura vanno a pestare i piedi all'attuale ammiraglia a1 e ancor di più alla a9. Sony ha sempre introdotto le novità prima di tutto sull'ammiraglia e poi nelle fotocamere degli altri segmenti...questa decisione di introdurrre queste novità sulla a7rV proprio non la condivido ,soprattutto perchè ce n'erano di cose ben più importanti da migliorare. Come la a7rIV sopra i 6400 ISO ci vorrà martello e scalpello per levigare il rumore, nel comparto video hanno aggiunto 8k e tutti ad entusiasmarsi,ma nessuno che va a vedere la qualità di questo 8k...contando che per ora la ripresa in 8k viene utilizzata per croppare in post,la qualità non è assolutamente all'altezza di altri marchi, in più è presente un rolling shutter evidentissimo che rende le riprese inutilizzabili o poco utilizzabili con panning o soggetti in movimento laterale, e ok c'è sempre il 4k,4k che fps a parte(specchietto per allodole)è uguale alla a7rIV e cioè molto più impastato del 4k della ottima a7IV e con il sempre pessimo rolling shutter(venduta la a7rIV per a1 proprio per la qualità video molto scarsa. Il tutto proposto a 4500 euro con feature video (8k e 4k 60fps)inserite più per giustificare il prezzo che per essere realmente utilizzabili in riprese dinamiche. Tutti impressinati dal sistema di messa a fuoco e nessuno che va a vedere la velocità di lettura del sensore...senza una rapida lettura del processore di un sitema af di questo tipo te ne fai gran poco in certe situazioni. bah...grande delusione. Come utilizzatore Sony fin dalla prima a7 (e come tanti altri utilizzatori e anche videomaker di fama mondiale)sono molto deluso dal comportamento di Sony. Inserire funzioni evolute su macchine dal costo decisamente inferiore alle ammiraglie e lasciar fuori le stesse ammiraglie che avrebbero diritto a queste feature è un comportamento che ha fatto arrabbiare più di qualcuno...di sicuro prima di spendere ancora tutti questi soldi in un ammiraglia che dopo pochi mesi vedo superata da una fotocamera minore ,ci penserò mille volte.

Rolling shutter,rolling shutter,rolling shutter etc...My 8 years old A7RII(42Mpx) has in 4K FF 16ms,which is not so bad, A7IV RS 26.5ms -33Mpx in 2022 ufuf, and I am afraid about RS 60 Mpx A7RV...I am sad ,because otherwise I would have bought A7RV right away (AF,Viewfinder,display, 10 bit etcetc...) :-( A7IV 33Mpx is enough of course,but in APSC mode on 42 Mpx A7RII(7RIII) 18 mpx ,and 7RIV,7RV even 26 MPx I think,which is nice (wildlife,birding etc)...

Your valuable information saved me a minimum $1.5K as I will not be upgrading my A7IV to a A7RV - so what I will do; is purchase a 2X teleconverter for my 70-200GM and feel like I got a cool tasty treat and use the sh*t out of this A7IV in hopes I will be worthy of a; A7RVI when the time comes. If you shoot sports where AF speed and frames per second matter. I have the A1. Though I primarily shoot landscape I also shoot sports (soccer, football, hockey) and capturing "the moment" in action benefits from the 20fps that I get. If they had made the r5 such that I could use the electronic shutter w/o the rolling shutter issue and get at least 10fps then I might have sold my A1 and picked up the R5. I love the new screen and the focus bracketing (for landscape). But for now I think I will wait and see if all these cool upgrades come out in the A1M2.

In reality, your client will never know the difference between any work shot on the A7RV and the A7IV for photo or video PERIOD. Yes, The screen is amazing on the A7RV, but let's be real that should be a standard feature on EVERY sony camera. If you're a serious photographer you wouldn't be watching this video and already own the A1 and are pissed off that you don't have a dope screen that should have been on every camera 4 years ago. For someone like me who shoots mainly video but is a passionate photographer, the A7IV is way better bang for your buck considering Im not wasting 1,500 dollars. I could take a vacation at that point... you get my point.

@@BoshkaGaming yes, but I really meant I want both. The a7siii isn’t a good photo camera, and the a7iv is 1.5x crop. That’s the best camera that’s in the middle of both at the moment

I think I’ll get the a7iv. As long as I can use the power bank to shoot continuous videos indoors, I don’t think heating will be a problem. I wish Sony did put fans in there, like Panasonic did with the GH6 to blow heat out of the camera when shooting videos. The a7rv is cool. 61mp on the sensor is always nice, you’ll get sharper images coming out of that camera. No one watches 8K on any platform. 4K isn’t huge deal still yet, even in late 2022. 1080p is still the standard. I only shoot 4K for crisp quality as it looks nicer. People watch content mainly on their phones, can’t see 4K on a tiny 6” iPhone screen. It’ll be a while before anyone watches 8K. 8K can be used for cropping to get sharp, close up images in post to be viewable on KZbin.

probably not, that's a similar setup I have for filming these YT videos and no issues. I plug directly to a 65W PD Power supply and record 4K 30 10 bit 4:2:2 140mbps. the GH6 goes a step further in that the power will charge and power at the same time, but that camera is a battery hog, and needs it a lot more than the A7iv
