Sony A7S3 Firmware 3.0 Update | New Feature No one Is Talking About!

Should you update your Sony A7S3 to firmware 3.0? I'll tell you why I think this update makes this camera come alive again but also why I think Sony will be discontinuing the S-Line. I'll also talk about a huge new feature in this firmware update that no one is talking about, dust protection. Then I'll share my experience with the update and some hurdles I had to overcome.

I'm a Sony owner and what's annoying is we are supposed to rejoice on super basic upgrades... This is a video camera and still no shutter angle ... so annoying... I couldn't be that hard for them to throw it in ... I personally would get better use of shutter angle with the a7siii then the fx3 because I use this camera for more b roll type shots when needing the view finder in bright situations, so I constantly go back n forth with frame rates 24 to 60 fps.. at this point I would pay for shutter angle on this camera lol !

I was happy to see the focus peaking available for video, and ability to make it thicker. Was using it and then it sort of dissapeared, became hard to see.

As you spoke of the 4K and 24p, your video did not display the DCI 4K 24.00p.

Hey Tom, thanks for the video and explanation! Quick question - what about some of the issues other people report? Have you experienced reduced battery performance or more-than-the-usual warming up of the camera (or anything else)? I am really hesitant to update, having heard some people say "I wish I could revert the update".

I’m actually working on a video update. The only thing I experienced was a decrease in battery life. Everything else including autofocus has been normal

Yeah, the Mac upgrade thing is nuts. The best thing it seems to do there was find a person with a PC AND UPGRADE FROM THEM. I had the not connecting or Bluetooth and Wi-Fi not working thing happen to me as well. I’m happy with the updates, but the animal eye autofocus isn’t fixed. I eventually got the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to work by taking the battery out waiting 2-5 minutes which turned out to be ten since I was eating and getting ready for work. I put the battery back in the camera and I went into the menu and reset the camera back to factory again and my Wi-Fi and Bluetooth came back on and I’m able to use that app. I don’t know if this will work for everyone and yes I had the swipe issue as well that is gone now. I’m also seeing it hard to see with the A6700, Fx3 ZVE1 series and Fx30, how they can continue with a A7S line. I think the smart thing to do is create a good EV to work in the hot shoe going forward and call it a day. I’m not ungrateful for the updates that we got here, but considering that the only difference between the Fx3 and A7SIII is the handle for $400, it really should have been more considering the cameras have the same internals, except the fan and the EVF. I would like one more big update to include shutter angle, eye autofocus in video, the Cine EI mode menu and they can discontinue it as this camera has reached Sony’s 4 year upgrade or discontinued cycle, putting fans in all official cinema cameras going forward. Then there is no need for a A7S line. The problem for most is Sony is still selling the A7SIII for full mark up, but being slow with the updates. You can however use the handle with XLR that comes with the Fx3 on the A7SIII with a small rig cage and adapter and it is great. That Handle can be used on the A7IV as well.

there is a bug in this update. camera heating issue battery draining. and samyang 35mm 1.4 ii autofocus is slowing.

I can't use the remote shoot function on my MacBook anymore. There is no option to turn off Smartphone function like the old firmware. I am trying to send a video feed to Zoom with a USB-C cable. It was never a problem before the update. Any solutions?

Try disabling the camera Bluetooth to turn off smartphone function then go to USB Connection and select Remote Function.

There is nothing more thoughtless than exposing the shutter to the possibility of getting dirty with unwanted dust. This is a simple way to shorten the life of the shutter because it is not a sensor cover like in the Nikon z9.

Eye's tracking is not working as well as the prevuious firmware. The target in the eye goes somtime out of focus with no reason...

make sure settings is not set on animal detection. Mine after the update defaulted to animal detection.

a7s iii buyers were the test group to see if the fx3 would be the more popular choice for people looking to film video exclusively. They got their answer. With all the hype and publicity the FX3 got with being the camera behind "The Creator" Sony realized it had a hit. The vast majority bought the a7s iii for video as the core reason. I never intended my purchase of it to be for "hybrid" use. Just video. So to sell me on the idea that this was the low-light movie makers wet dream...and to then turn around and put out the FX3 was a 300 mile an hour slap in the face. There really should only be the fX line going forward. You would be a conplete fool to invest in the a7 line frome this poinr forward after you saw how Sony treated you over the past 3 years with intentionally witholding firmware upgrades to the as7 iii that they freely threw at the FX3. Sony has too many camera lines that do great megapixel counts for pictures. I know i would not in the 4th iteration of this camera knowing what i know now.

Using a fragile shutter leaf to protect sensor is one of the most stupid function a company gives us. If they really want to prevent dusts onto the sensor, they should design a thin, replacable glass in front of the mount.

yes, with DJI RS3, I just had to do the bluetooth pairing again.

Currently only 20 lenses are supported by FBC 👎not the best feature in the package.

Yes, the same thing happened to me with the same lenses, focus hunting and the third party lenses can't focus 100%, sony wants the sony bodies to not use third party lenses, so you can update, don't continue, it will hurt your ass, just wait the new sony update instead of being the same as me, I regret rushing to update my a7siii

24p has always been a rounded up number on most cameras. True cinema “24p” IS actually 23.976

Yes and no. That's TV friendly 24p. Movies filmed before that change were 24Hz. Nowadays plenty of for-streaming movies are back to 24.000fps

Don't use the shutter as cover if dust sticks on it and you put the lens back on, who knows where the dust will go deep inside the cam. Maybe sony did this to finally destroy the s line as a planned obsolescence thing 😅
