When it comes to 10-bit and 8-bit it's not about seeing any difference. The difference is the latitude you have to work with in post. With 8-bit, you are extremely limited in how much you can push the color grade in post before the image breaks down and creates artifacts and pink splotches. With 10-bit, you literally have very little to no limitations for grading in post. That's the only difference that matters.

If it weren't about seeing the difference, then it wouldn't matter at all... but it does. Perhaps what you mean is that it doesn't necessarily matter what one sees in the viewfinder or in the raw shot, but what one can achieve in a graded shot?

Great video! but I feel unless you’re working for large Hollywood/television productions, it won’t really matter.... even if you’re doing small client work. You can still notice the banding in 10-bit. Maybe not as much, but it’s still there. You can even see in the Lumetri scope where the banding is (where there are lines of missing colour info in the sky/highlights). Although... i did learn a trick to help with banding and is how production companies “hide” it when shooting 8-bit..... add a bit of noise to the sky and it should blend the colours a bit, reducing the amount banding ☺️

Yeah but it's not just the banding. 10bit is waaaay more forgiving regarding *everything.* It's about the difference between unusable and fixable in post. Sure, in a perfect world everything is always perfectly exposed, white balance is always perfect etc but in reality, that one super important shot can be a little off sometimes. With 8bit it's either "keep it but it's not gonna shine" or "that 💩 is out!" 10bit: Fix it in post 🤷‍♂️

@@fredriksvard2603 KZbin does have EVERYTHING to do with it. Every SDR content will be re-encoded in 8-bit by KZbin, so you can't really compare 8-bit vs. 10-bit, both will have a noticeable amount of banding. And even worse, SDR content is relatively bitstarved compared to HDR when re-encoded, so it makes the comparison even less accurate by not only not being at the right bit depth but also for not having a decent amount of bitrate.

@DonGutierrez
@DonGutierrez 3 жыл бұрын
Well yes, you can tell the difference, but the problem is that it's more subtle rather than simply being a night and day comparison. Stack that on top of youtube compression, 10 bit is not gonna completely blow 8 bit out of the water. But the richness in colors, the better highlight roll-off, is there. And that matters most to those who will be pursuing the best they can out of their image. Rather than a night and day difference comparison, it's much more apt to compare it to say a regular grilled steak and say a steak that was either dry-aged or sous vided before grilling. Both are gonna taste great! But the nuances in the dry-aging, the sous vide process, is what makes the steak go from a good steak to an outstanding one. You don't need to spend or put in so much effort to get a great image out of either of them. But if you want to raise it up a level, then you push for the 10 bit.
@kidzrevil
@kidzrevil 3 жыл бұрын
You can’t SEE the difference...it only matters in post production. Honestly if you expose the image CORRECTLY in camera you will never have to worry about 8 bit vs 10 bit in a real world scenario. 10 bit is not RAW, compression still plays a bigger role in the image quality than bit depth ever will.

@uzefulvideos3440
@uzefulvideos3440 2 жыл бұрын
@Kidz ‘R EViL "it all ends up getting compressed down to 8bit for youtube" yes, and that's a problem. "Even if you upload in HDR spec the bitrate eliminates any perceivable gain from the higher bit depth." That is not true at all. 10-bit limited-range YUV truncated down to 8-bit RGB (for display on the screen) just produces way less banding than 8-bit limited-range YUV has at normal streaming bitrates which remove all/most of the dither noise. The higher you go with your bitrate, the less 8 vs 10 bit matters, because the encoder has less and less problem preserving the fine dither noise (which is expensive to preserve with traditional methods because high entropy). The difference would be even bigger if video players would dither down to 8-bit RGB by default, which pretty much none of them do. That would eliminate pretty much all banding artifacts. Something that really maddens me is that many studios don't dither down to 8-bit before sending the video to the H.264 encoder for Blu-ray mastering, which results in very visible, and unnecessary banding, since at those bitrates at least x264 is able to preserve the dither noise and prevent any extreme banding. With dither noise, 8-bit just has a higher noise floor compared to 10 bits, while without dither noise it has lots of ugly truncation artifacts, mostly visible as banding on smooth gradients, especially in dark areas on a standard SDR gamma transfer curve.
@uzefulvideos3440
@uzefulvideos3440 2 жыл бұрын
@Kidz ‘R EViL Then you don't understand dithering. Whenever you reduce bit depth you should dither, to prevent truncation errors. This raises the noise floor. Of course the dither noise might be overshadowed by other noise, in which case it isn't actually the noise floor. Increased resolution can actually replace bit depth btw, if dithered. But again, lossy encoding likes to remove the dither noise, so encoding at high bit depth is more efficient, and also keeps the noise floor lower (which only really matters in production).

I think many people are missing the point. Of course yes, youtube is an 8 bit platform, but grading the same video in 10bit vs in 8bit , will produce a cleaner and less noisy 8 bit image. Point is not all 8 bit video looks the same, some look good, and some look way better, i would assume the latter is because it was graded in 10bit.

Why do you think brother? Perhaps because regardless of the bitrate it was filmed on, youtube will compress to 8bit to save space, therefore even if it was filmed on 16bit once uploaded to KZbin it will be turned down to 8bit. 10bit is only useful in heavy editing, grading and visual effects… or when you get your exposure off

S-log 3 is probably not the right choice for 8-bit video. Also, KZbin is an 8-bit platform that heavily compresses video. Recording in 10-bit video is great and offers more grading flexibility, but the end result is still going to be displayed in 8-bit on KZbin. I watched this on my 4K monitor, and the banding appeared even in the 10-bit video, probably because of KZbin compression.

You are right in THEORY, but after dithering/smoothing and KZbin compression, it's VERY difficult to tell the difference. PLUS - and MOST importantly - 99.9 percent of regular viewers won't be able to tell the difference, as they don't look at the skies - they look at the subject (and unless he's superman, he won't be in the sky.) Even if you TELL them to look at the sky ... "Uh ... what am I looking for? I don't see any difference." So yeah ... for high end clients and other cinematographers, 10 bit may be important, but for KZbin/Vimeo delivery ... Meh ... It's really a waste of money (to spend on a 10 bit camera) You're better off concentrating o n good AUDIO, which is arguably as important or MORE important than a beautiful picture. (NO one but filmmakers watch a film and say, "The story SUCKED, but what a beautiful picture!") But, as far as your video goes, you did an EXCELLENT job of explaining it and showing the difference. It's always going to matter most in acquisition. 10-bit will grade better and should handle large gamuts better than 8-bit. But as far as I know, SDR on KZbin is still 8-bit, no? I still have Sony's last generation so I'm stuck with 8-bit for a while longer yet, but I've found pretty good results with slog2 and itu709 gamut. I don't have to increase the saturation at all, and because it is a small color space it seems to take well to 8-bit. So I've got a little more dynamic range and really strong colors.

To be honest, not even the client would tell the difference in the examples you showed, pay attention to the top budget music videos in youtube, and netflix movies, they all have bending because the platforms compress the files to 8bit. Very Eye opening Sidney! I was running into 8-bit color grading limitations with my A7III and A7RIV and was attributing a lot of it to my color grading learning curve. While I'm sure some is due to my skill level, a lot the issues I've been having are the ones you have shown here. I'm awaiting my A7SIII to arrive in a couple weeks so hopefully that will solve most of the issues!

4:20 1. that is just that footage and maybe SLOG related for 8 bit. 2. What was the uploaded end video here you uploaded, was the project in 10 bit or 8 bit? Actually the banding has not to be necessarely only for 8 bit. A very good example that comes into my mind is breaking bad, in particular the pilot episode. because it many sky footage you cant see any banding and the standard bluray is 8 bit. Sony has a bit transfer technic that allow them to preserv gradiants very very nicely to 8 bit finals. Panasonic has a different approach, at least i have the japanese BR of Princess Mononoke, they claim with the right Panasonic TV you can recreate instead of a 24bit RGB/YUV Signal with the metadata on the BR to 32bit RGB/YUV. Sony is just bad with its 8 Bit SLOG i think and it does not behave very nice for colorcorrection.
@Makta972

I mainly shoot music videos with 8 bit and 10 bit cameras and when exposed correctly you can not see a difference. If you are trying to save severely under or overexposed image you get a slight advantage in 10 bit. It’s not the silver bullet people make it out to be.

If the video is not edited you are right, but at the moment you apply a LUT those colors are getting stretched. Its not that rare, for example, photography raw files are like 16 bit or more, but if you edit hard enough you can still get bending on an 8 bit exported file.
