There are still plenty of unanswered questions that will have to wait until we have a full firmware version. We've already seen numerous times where Sony didn't make some changes clear. As we discover them, we ask about them and then scratch out heads. There's certainly going to be some sacrifices made, what they are, we don't fully know yet.

So far, I think that Sony's global shutter would've been better left for Sony's forthcoming flagship model, α1 II, since it seems overkill but still halfbaked in α9 III. For now, burst capture is capped at 1/16 000 sec shutter speed, not even the 1/32 000 sec of α9 and α9 II, further complicating the base ISO of 250. Yes, a single shot at 1/80 000 sec exposure can be useful, but scarcely when shooting action. And since flash duration is usually far longer, the fastest flash sync in practice is far lower. Aside from flash sync at, say, 1/4 000 sec, nearly any other new feature-even the new custom button, fewer than should've been added-is more relevant to practice than is a global shutter, I say. Sony's development/production cost for this new sensor sets α9 III at 6000 USD. Apparently missing is the hardware to implement CFexpress' new protocol, 4.0, which, issued in September 2023, doubles type A's speed limit to 2 GB/s. Altogether, α1's 50 MP sensor reveals that α9 III could've had a 36 MP sensor with readout even faster, letting the α9 series still acquire flash sync with electronic shutter, maybe up to 1/400 sec, yet also at last acquire ISO invariance via dual-gain architecture, even while respecting ISO 100. Further negligible would be both problems that a global shutter eliminates-image skew and LED banding-while the sharing of sensor technology/production could set α9 III's price at 5000 USD.

Is it cheating, it might be for the die hard combustion engine folks, but let's be honest, as DSLR is a thing of the past, so is rolling shutter! The transition will take time and some heavy weight machinery will still use mechanical + rolling shutters, but their days are numbered. Basically DSLR market is dead. No one right now is buying any new DSLR body, and no one views it a "cheating". Why do I believe it's natural to have the possibility to go back on frames that you didn't shoot is because reaction times bot of humans and cameras are not instantaneous, it cant be, there is even a delay from your eye to your brain and then from the brain to your muscle to react. Thats not true at all. Regardless of what some people might think , a pure eletronic shutter and a very fast one like you have on the z9 already reduces banding to a point its almost non existant. Canon has had a global shutter patented for 8 years and they never released it. Considering the drawbacks of having a global shutter, like higher base ISO, poor low light performance, its quite possible that Canon opted for a very fast full eletronic shutter on the R1. It would achieve 98% of the same results as the global shutter of sony regarding banding. As for the flash sync benefits of the global shutter thats another story, but right now the tradeoff of a global shutter is somewhat significant. Also canon does not want the R1 to be a R3 so they are probably aiming for a higher mpx sensor. That said it could not have a global shutter and a high mpx sensor as the technology is still not there for it.

?!?!!? You can shoot virtually anything with a high speed camera and never see anything remotely similar to this. This is interpolation. There is probably some weird mode that is merging 2 images together or an option that compromises the images just to give you those high shutter speeds. Its probably using some compression across frames to get to 120fps. There is probably an option that stops using compression across frames that gives you a lower frame rate. A ping pong ball isnt demonstrating optical issues in physics. If it was this bad, all high speed cams would have massive issues and artifacts all over anything moving.

@tubularificationed Жыл бұрын
It is probably not a new standard, but a new exception 😉 it is for specialist applications, where the ability to freeze motion, including getting the guaranteed 'decisive moment' in motion, is more important than having best image quality (in terms of best dynamic range). Because that is where global shutters are a little weak. Already the A1 (even though not yet having a global shutter) traded speed for image quality (the A1 has a bit more noise than 'fine art' cameras like the A7R series). Because the faster an analog-to-digital converter operates, the more noise does it produce. There is a good reason why A7R* have such a slow sensor readout, even slower than what the resolution justifies.

I don't want a camera with less dr. Iso 250 lol who needs 120fps anyway?
@HR-wd6cw Жыл бұрын
@@Makta972 This just depends on priorities. For landscape shooters, they probably don't want a camera that has a base ISO of 250, although we would have to see a comparison with say a Z9 which has a base of 64 to see what the differences in DR actaully are. We just know that in general, as you raise the ISO from base, you lose DR, but it depends on what the DR at base is. I haven't checked. Maybe it is worse than its rivals. But i think the big advantage here aside from the burst rates and global shutter design, is that at higher ISOs it probably performs better than other cameras like the z9, R3 and probably the R1 when it comes out, and the A1). So it really comes down to trade-offs. If you're going to be at high ISOs most of the time shooting sports, a base ISO of 250 is maybe not a huge deal and whatever DR loss that relsults in, may not be a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I would guess that sports/wildlife shooters are not overly converned about, say, a 1/2 stop loss in DR. Landscapes shooters might, but then a gain, I don't know that the A9 III is really a landscape camera to begin with either,. Hence, if I had an A1 or A7R IV/V for example, and was shooting travel or landscapes, I wouldn't necessarily jump for the A9 III even though it has some improvements and the global shutter because that stuff may not matter for my shooting (I'm a Nikon shooter though).
@Makta972 Жыл бұрын
@@HR-wd6cw that's just not true. I shoot sports and DR is really important to me. Especially as you start to use higher ISO ( that's the difference between say a r5 and a R3 at iso 10 000, the r3 still got great color saturation and way cleaner files). Also the DR loss is more like 1.5 stop to 2 stop like stated on DPR. That's really significant. Global shutter is only really interesting if you shoot TON of flash stuff. 4:53 Some physics students analyzed the photo and believed it was in fact an aerodynamics effect occurring between the camera and the ball. When the ball spins at a high speed, it drags air behind it. The aerodynamic drag compresses the air and increases its density. That results in a localized change in refraction, and refracts the light slightly more. It's like a minuscule version of the air distortion behind a passenger jet. You might have seen the effect behind planes at an airport or airshow. Usually you can't see this effect on a table tennis ball because it travels too fast and leaves a trace on photos due to rolling shutter effect.

I‘d love if you’d take it for a spin at a concert with fast moving artists to see if the global shutter doesn’t have any problems with LED banding
@swistedfilms Жыл бұрын
This should deal with that issue. Of course, you don't really need 120 FPS at a concert like you do at a sporting event but if you did use it then the global shutter should make banding a thing of the past.

@@RealThore The nice thing about getting all those shots, aside from having lots of choices, is that if you save them all then 20 years from now you'll have shots that people have never seen and now you can release those as "bonus features." People won't care if the shots aren't the best of the best; they'll just want the nostalgia high. Imagine finding a huge archive of unreleased photos of someone like Jimi Hendrix or Jerry Garcia today. That would be an incredible treasure! I wonder what Sony was thinking with using Type A memory cards instead of the much faster Type B cards which would be a perfect compliment to such a fast camera.
@EmilWall Жыл бұрын
The type b cards are bigger so it would be harder to have dual setup while still maintaining the small size which Sony puts a lot of effort into having. Going for type b could still be the more logical choice, but that's what every other brand is doing.

A9-iii is a HUGE upgrade from the a9-ii. Global Shutter with 120 fps makes the A9-iii a BEAST and another evolution step forward for photography. It be pointless for Sony to release an A9-iii with a rolling shutter, 33 mp Stacked Sensor and 60 fps. Sony just set the standards for the rest of their Alpha series and told Canon and Nikon to do the same as well or be left behind again.
@LadyFairChildVideo Жыл бұрын
disagree, its a huge step for people that are struggling to hold their camera steady and are just basically guessing their shots by taking so many frames. its a crutch really. and the global shutter , again, is only important if that insane amount of photos in a second is your thing. its not mine. @@harryvuemedia

Professional sports photographer must have this camera. I'm curious when the global shutter sensor will be introduced to standard class camera (or never).
@AndrewCCM Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say "must". It would be nice to have. I don't find myself missing the shots required for my assignments. For me, I slow down my fps because dealing with the amount of images, space, time, etc is very prohibitive when on a deadline. If you're not on one, then I suppose it would be great to spend hours digging through them to find the perfect frame. In the short periods of time I have to edit, caption and transmit at events, the last thing I need is overload. Time will tell I suppose... For now, I prefer to have higher MP count for extra cropping (which helped me tremendously the past NFL Sunday shooting from end zone to end zone) and shooting a bit less frames. Even 20fps is a lot to deal with. To each his own and I certainly could be eating my words eventually. For me, it's about ROI and spending money on something that actually will make me "more" money... and not something that just make "more" images. Take care...

The Z9 might not be able to do 120 fps raw because of the high megapixels. With the A9iii being 24 megapixels, that might be the reason it can shoot 120fps raw. Let's see if Nikon comes out with an update later but I doubt it.

@@felm.974 We likely will see a Z9 price drop now that the A9-iii is out. At $6k usd, you are better off getting the A9-iii with its global shutter. On the one hand this is progress, on the other hand this feels like eventually "photography" will stop being a thing for most people. I'm sure many will love it, but I don't want to be frame-grabbing from video and calling myself a photographer. No fun in that.
@swistedfilms Жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying but keep in mind that this is really geared towards sports, and very specifically geared towards pro photographers who will be at the Olympics next year. That's why they felt comfortable going with just 24 MP. Sports photographers are sending those photos to editors who won't be printing them at huge sizes. Most of those will be for the internet where 24 MP is way more than enough. This camera could be used for portraits and landscapes, sure, but that's not its main focus. And in those arenas the artistry of the photographer still counts: lighting, posing, editing, and so on. But in sports the photographer has no control over the subject and very little control over the circumstances. They take what they can get. This is just putting another tool in their toolbox in order to get the job done. And that's what they're doing: a job. They're there to get the photos that people love to see and nobody cares how they got them.
@walliswizard Жыл бұрын
Yep I absolutely agree with you. I do think this technology will, eventually, end up in every camera of the future. I guess we'll see what the future brings. I guess there'll always be a market for stripped down cameras that take things back to basics.

@@walliswizardIt's so ridiculously easy to just... not buy this camera or not use those features. I know photographers that use film exclusively, for example. Like all features, this 120fps stuff is great for those who want it. No one else has to embrace it.
@walliswizard Жыл бұрын
@@WarKrieg I see a not-too-distant future where people will walk around a city capturing large quantities of it at 120fps, coming home, selecting a few pictures from that "roll", and publishing them as "photos". They will, because they can, because their camera, like all modern cameras of that future time, will include that functionality, and have the capacity to store it. What impact would that have on street photography, for example? I don't know, I'm just speculating at this point. And that's assuming they won't just leave the built-in AI routines to select the best images for them in the first place.
@Xirpzy Жыл бұрын
@@walliswizardits similar to having phones with cameras. Suddenly everyone has one and there is barely any thought behind photos taken. Composition, lighting, framing isnt easy so majority do not think about such things when taking photos. The photographer has to be creative and use the knowledge of what makes a great photo to stand out. Its the same with AI art and generated "photos". Why spend hours making a digital painting and learning cameras when you can write a prompt and let AI do it in minutes? What if the end user doesnt care that its AI generated? The world for artists and photographers changes as art becomes less about the process, skill and knowledge and all about the end product. I hate to see it but in the future so called "AI art" will probably be seen as true art even if there is no artist behind it.
