Great fun Gordon. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share. They're just both simply tremendous aren't they? If I had to choose, it'd be the Fuji as I 95% take photos. I'm actually amazed by the video on my iPhone now - that just keeps getting better. As a long-time Fuji user I also simply love the Fuji colour science. The medium format shown here is also a massive bonus - not only in terms of sheer megapixels but a whole host of other factors. To my eye, MF offers a more three-dimensional image than FF. Both the Fuji and Hasselblad examples I've seen recently seem to bear my thoughts out. It's probably in large part to the larger format sensor and the sheer physics of getting a lens to resolve to MF dimensions. Probably why so many portrait, studio and product photographers use MF Systems. The Sony is a wonderful machine though and seems to be an utterly superb all-rounder - even for videographers. Amazing what 6 large will get you these days (Not including lenses. -aghhh!).

That was fun and really informative. My biggest take away came from the 16-shot pixel shift images from the Sony, especially the flower still life, also the chart. That 35mm GM lens is so good it's INSANE! Resolution like that from a wide angle lens on a full-frame sized sensor is unbelievable. That lens will be future proof if someday we get an 80, 100, or even 150 mp Sony A7RV. The 8K video from that lens on the Sony A1 is absolutely unbelievable, too. Uh. You're going to make me order one of those lenses for my older Sony full-frame. I'll never need another 35mm in my lifetime!

Thanks, Gordon. I was really hoping you’d discover the moire and pattern noise of the A1. I have yet to see a blog talk about this. I’ve been burned a few times attempting to use both the Sony A7SM3 and the A1 for shooting high end television. Fine thread patterns in shirts or metal screens can cause pattern noise that cannot be removed and destroy an otherwise lovely image.
@cameralabs3 жыл бұрын
I've not seen that in my own images, but I generally shoot landscapes or buildings, rather than textiles or people. I know there's been issues with moire on some previous cameras, and regarding the A1, I've heard from one person mentioning it for video. But again I've not seen it in my own tests. This is the problem with testing anything, as you can't cover every subject or scenario. i already spend two to four weeks testing every camera I review and it's already not financially viable to do that. So my hope is that with so many of us reviewing / testing the same products on KZbin, every aspect will eventually be covered. There are certainly some reviewers who concentrate on modelling or wedding photography, so I'd approach them, as they're more likely to be seeing the issues you're experiencing.

Excellent video, Gordon. Really. I understand that you intended to compare the shooting capabilities (both 1 frame & video) of the two cameras.. Given the higher sensor pixel count of the Fuji I'm not surprised for its better resolving output at all aspects in one frame photos yet not performing better than the Sony at video shooting. I just can't understand why this is so. Another point I want to address is that both cameras being focused to reach the professional and the advanced amateur niche, imaging output is, while weighing a major parameter in a decision making process, is not the sole determining factor. Other important aspects related to different areas of analysis are always taken into account by prospective prosumers. These aspects must answer, by and large, to some specific questions such as these dozen ones: 1- How good does the camera feel on your hands (ergonomics)? 2- How objective - or not friendly, does the camera's menu allow one to navigate through the options in a quick manner? 3- Is the camera robust, weather sealed and finely manufactured/finished (take the Leicas as a yardstick). 4- Is IBIS available? 5- What is the range of available brand lenses, particularly the recent launched? 6- Are the camera's brand lenses of any given focal length, compared to its competitors brand, lighter or heavier? 7- How fast is the camera's flash High-Speed Sync (HSS)? 8- Does the camera offer shutter speeds longer than 3-5 minutes? (This is vital for breathtaking photos of landscapes, particularly at the seashore, using ND filters). Landscape pros won't buy any camera with limited shutter speeds. 9- Does the camera offer articulated and highly defined back screens? Are they touch screen? 9- Does the camera offer built-in inputs for microphones and earphones? 10- Can the camera's battery be charged via USB? Does it offer HDMI large or mini ports? Dual cards? 11- How fast is the camera internal buffer? 12- How well responsive is the camera's manufacturer after sales service? I could list another dozen of questions that people ask in their minds before deciding upon this or that camera. However, I must agree that the final imaging output parameter carries a paramount weight and is preceded. Gordon, I believe that every follower of yours would love to watch a further video approaching the above raised comparison issues. I did and the Fuji GFX 100S surpassed some 85% of the Sony's model. A final thought to be considered: the resale return as years go by. As you know Camera bodies hold value very poorly, especially if bought new. Example: Nikon D1: 10 years after release, price dropped 95% of value. In the case of Sony cameras, it is a known fact the brand cameras face the the highest depreciation speed over time. One of the reasons for this drawback is their high amount of launching new models in shorter lengths of time, compared to other camera brands. A given superseded camera model may drop 50% of its original price which, in many cases, happened in less than one year lapse. Mind you, Lenses resale value is another story. They usually hold their original prices steady and in some cases (some Leica and Nikon lenses, for example), increase their original prices as years go by.
@ricardoduarte65893 жыл бұрын
Another point also very important is the fact tha Fujifilm is known to be the brand camera that enjoys a very high degree of customer's satisfaction due to their permanent and rich amount of releasing new firmware to upgrade and modernize their cameras and lenses' performance.

@@derrickrr5516 how will I know if I've encountered them if I don't know what they are? There's a few things I don't like about the A1 or thought they could have included, but there were no bugs or problems I experienced while testing so far. See my A1 review.

Sorry guys. You’re right. I’ll list them. Please keep in mind I liked the camera so much that I am exchanging it for another copy. I’m hoping I just got a bad copy or at worst these things can be corrected with firmware updates. The camera exceeded my expectations in many ways. I only have two lenses as I recently switched from another brand and my alpha one purchase became almost twice as expensive after adding these two lenses, a Tele converter, flashcards and filters. I have the Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 DG ART (very sharp lens). I also have (had) the Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM. I believe it is responsible or at least partly responsible for the first problem I was having, therefore I returned it and I am now getting the 200-600 G lens. First issue was, camera freezing. This occurred only with the Sony 70-200 and almost always at ISO 125, 200 or 250 and always at f/2.8. A couple times it occurred at ISO 400. It didn’t happen all the time but probably 10 times in the three weeks I used the camera. Shooting birds at continuous auto focus everything would be fine then suddenly the camera would freeze. When I would look at the screen I would see whatever I saw the moment it froze. No buttons would work for 10 to 30 seconds and then all of a sudden it would take a picture of whatever my camera happened to be pointing at. A few times, turning off the camera wouldn’t even resolve the issue. I tried different cards with the same issue. Another thing that happened a couple times was the EVF would stop working in bright sunlight. I had to take my hand and place it over the viewfinder and remove my hand a few times or just turn the camera off and then back on again. I also noticed quite a bit of chromatic noise (magenta colored) if my pictures were underexposed by as little as 2/3 stop. That bothered me a lot at first but that is more of a user error problem so I just need to be more careful. In my opinion, the battery life was quite poor. I am comparing to my previous cameras which were both Nikons and with this being such a workhorse maybe it is not a fair comparison. But I was going through two batteries in less than a day of shooting only a few hundred pictures. However, I did spend a lot of time going through the menu. Like I said, I am new to Sony so it took me a long time to get the camera set up exactly like I want so I was spending a lot of time in the menus. While spending so much time in the menus the camera was overheating on me in standard mode. It was doing this without even taking pictures or videos. So I had to use high temp mode or whatever it’s called. Finally, the biggest problem I had was forward AND backward focusing. If it was just one of those I could live with it and just micro tune the focus but there’s nothing I can do about it if both are occurring. The green box would show focus occurred on the eye or the face but in actuality focus was occurring a few inches to a couple feet behind or (usually) in front of where the camera said it was. This problem was occurring with both of my lenses. With the 70-200 it was occurring even in good light. Three different occasions I tried to take pictures of my dog running and 90% of the pictures were no good. It was even happening with very slow moving subjects (people walking). At times, focus was perfect so it wasn’t happening ALL the time but WAY TOO OFTEN. The Sigma lens it was only occurring in lower light conditions. However, it was occurring on static subjects which was very disappointing. Again, the green box showed focus was on the eye or face but in reality...nope. Something in front of or behind them would be tac sharp. Almost all of the reviews on KZbin are with Sony prime lenses. I do plan on getting the 135 and possibly the 35, 50 or 85. But the $$$$$ telephoto lenses are out of my budget. Maybe someday. I was pretty disappointed with the 70-200 lens. Being a G Master I expected better. I know it’s not a prime but still... That lens also had a very noisy focus ring. Sounded like a coffee grinder. So I returned it as well. I shouldn’t have to have, exclusively, Sony prime lenses to get this camera to work right. I’m not seeing these things talked about much other than on some photography forums, so I’m hoping I just got a bad copy. I’m always open to the idea that I may not be smarter than the average bear after all. Perhaps all these issues are user error but I asked around and could not figure out how I was contributing to these problems other than the magenta noise due to underexposure.

What I do with the A1 is to take a burst and stack them in post, the Fuji can't capture bursts to stack as well as the A1, especially hand held, because it isn't as fast. With stacked images the A1 would be superior.
@mortezakhobzi36512 жыл бұрын
Why bother with excessive sharpness? Sony pixel shift is not perfect and every body knows that, what makes a medium format camera a million times better is the dynamic range and the ability to change histogram! Basically a full frame camera no matter how good is in no way near a medium format camera

Fujifilm camera should technically be cable of 12k, or at least the sensor resolution is enough
@cameralabs3 жыл бұрын
They would need to be able to read ALL of that data off the sensor at 30fps or faster though AND process it, so those are normally the limitations.
@KOKOBC3 жыл бұрын
@@cameralabs maybe they could’ve done 12k external recording?
@cameralabs3 жыл бұрын
@@KOKOBC the first issue is resolution and as you know, the camera has that. The second issue is sensor readout speed, being able to deliver the entire res at 30fps or faster - that's the issue here. So no, sadly not.
