As an owner of the GFX100, this new camera really drops the value on the current 100. What are the major improvements besides the smaller body and IBIS? I am quite happy with the GFX100 but is it worth me trading in for the s version? I do own more XT4 batteries but the dual GFX batteries last me through a day and I don’t mind the vertical grip. I am purely looking at trading to keep the camera that will hold the test of time if I ever need to resell.

This is an area like you mentioned you only going to find out when having access to the 100s yourself and experience this camera. Yes the quality of the a7RIV is indeed already fantastic and it's hard to see significant differences using it it only for the internet or for prints up to 1 meter. Taking the 50mp sensor and making better cameras than the Gfx 50R and S, with more up to date technology, at reasonable prices. That could give Nikon a little of breathing room when they seem to need it the most. Sadly, as long term Nikon user that I've been letting down several times by Nikon's incapacity to move quicker and its conservative approach, I doubt such thing would happen ever.

As you know, the hands-on experience of the SL2 is class-leading, both in terms of build quality and ergonomics, not to mention that fantastic EVF. My lonely collection of GFX lenses (relegated to living in their boxes again) await the hoped for development of a new body with, yes, 50 or 102 MP and phase detect AF, but also with upgraded buttons, control wheels, joystick, and top plate controls similar to the X-series models. Think Texas Leica meets SL2. I use and enjoy several X-series bodies and lenses as well as the SL2 and other Leica gear, but unloaded the GFX bodies due to frustration with their ergonomics. I was (am) hoping for a redesigned GFX100 with improved controls or a mid-size (like the 100S) with XT-3, XT-4, X-Pro 3 dials and much better secondary controls. Also, while understandable, it is frustrating to see a decrease in specs and performance of the EVF, especially given the trend toward improving those seen in the other brands. I hope this is a bridge camera, with a new “R” body and new large flagship body in the works. For now, it’s SL2 all the way.

Hugh yours is the first review for this potentially ground breaking camera and as someone who has already bought into the Fuji ecosystem. You didn’t let me down though I didn’t expect to be haha! Anyway, thanks for a great wind down from the 9-5. So many questions and thoughts come to mind and if you’ve the time I’d love to hear your ideas. I lived in Japan for 2.5 years (and worked for a traditional Japanese company) so am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but have a little insight into Japanese business culture. Long story short as you likely know Japanese businesses are very very patient by American standards when it comes to being in the black. What Bezos did with Amazon to grow his company and undercut the competition while taking a temporary loss would be considered much less novel there and in some circles just plain common sense. So when you said if they can afford it when talking about price cutting my thought was what is their own unique idea regarding what is “affordable” to them. If it’s a hard line and being willing to take temporary losses things could get very interesting very quickly! Do you think they would do that I certainly feel it is likely and do you think their other optical departments and APS-C line up is enough to sustain them through such a period? From my perspective it seems like a great plan because as the GFX system grows in popularity so does the brand even for those people who would never desire, need, or be able to afford such gear...My best analogy is the way the Audi R8 boosted Audi’s profile in the automotive world. My apologies if that’s of no help! Anyway next question. Do you think that just as FF has dramatically reduced problems such as rolling shutter that same evolution will take place w/ MF or “super full frame” to the point where it’s a non issue? And lastly since Sony develops these sensors besides growing revenue through their sales do you for see them or any other companies opening up a line of MF cameras? And if I could a follow up...having hands on experience with the L mount and other cameras do any if them have enough coverage within their glass line ups to drop a MF sensor into their current FF mounts w/o missing a beat (in your best estimation) or would everyone need to retool? Thanks so much even for just reading this. Hopefully this sheds a little light on why I enjoy your thoughtful and unique approach so much! Cheers!

Loved the video! I'm an architectural photographer looking to make the upgrade from my x-series with no tiltshift currently and I am considering a 100s (big investment I know but there's a degree of future proofing too.) My ears definitely pricked up when you were talking about cropping- I am looking at using a canon 24 tse until Fuji get their act together, on the gfx it produces a 19mm equivalent (a bit wide for my liking) but can be rapidly turned into a 24mm with the 35mm mode. On the 100s there would be absolutely no compromise on image quality which is pretty amazing. I might only need the gf60 which again with the 35mm crop mode could be made into a longer lens, incredible stuff.

Honestly I feel like medium format should be the new push. There's not a massive difference between modern APS-C cameras and full frame imo. The gap that was there seems to closing with each new generation. I personally haven't missed my Sony A7iii since I switched to the X-T4. Medium format though that's just a different breed all its own. You can’t be serious? IMO it is the complete opposite that is true, FF offers so many advantages over APSC, and they have come to a point where lenses are much less bulky and the sensors perform like yesterdays Medium Format. These 100MP medium format cameras with huge lenses, small selection and way too high prices will slowly dissappear from the mainstream, they are only interesting for the pixel hungry elite professionals, even though Fuji are trying to convince the people otherwise. The leap in the “Look” of pictures is much more apparent from APSC to FF, than FF to MF.

Lots to think about.

You are incorrect on one point. The GF23mm, and equivalent focal length lenses of any format in general, do not have more or less perspective distortion than their equivalents, as perspective distortion is a direct result of field of view, and field of view is the same between equivalent focal lengths. Thus the GF23mm and a full-frame 18mm lens will not show different levels of perspective distortion. I can only think that the 4:3 aspect ratio is somehow confusing you Hugh. There is no medium format look, larger sensors are not inherently more flattering for portraits (otherwise the Olympus 75mm would not be as highly appreciated as it is). The only advantages of larger sensors over smaller ones is the greater resolution potential and lower image level noise/increased dynamic range.

You are absolutely right! I misspoke: I was thinking of the difference within a format. For a given object size (in this case, a face), the longer the focal length, the farther back one stands from the subject . Thank you!

Fascinating & entertaining analysis as always - thanks Hugh. Interesting to see where the market goes with, as you say, crop & medium formats squeezing full frame, just at the point where full frame is busting out of being stuck in the middle. Watch these spaces ... hold that thought ;)

The biggest significant impact of the 100S (for me) might be the driving of GFX50R prices into a more reasonable realm. But then, I've always been a sucker for "rangefinder" layouts. Think of it as a Gx8 on steroids.
@Bayonet18094 жыл бұрын
The 50R is to much of a brick for me, there is just no way to comfortably hold it without adding on grips, which defeats the purpose of the camera. I prefer this 100s body style.

I love your videos. They are art in themselves. I shoot big still landscapes in very remote places. Think of Hidden Dunes in Death Valley in Summer. Very interested in this camera but miss the Fuji dials and am also wondering how you would compare to the SL2 for shooting landscapes. I do like Fuji’s colour renderings on its small X series camera (my poor man’s M equivalent and I know that is probably blasphemy to say such)….

These KZbin algorithms are scary, I placed my order for the GFX100s, then opened KZbin and your video was first in the list. My 50R is now relegated to backup camera, which might be a metaphorical equivalent of towing a Honda Civic behind a Lexus SUV.... The 80 1.7 is also most intriguing. (thoughts being held till in hand)

My Rolleiflex was light (relatively) and fun too. And fun in the darkroom which digital certainly isn't. We had the slow food movement, and before that the slow photography movement. In it, we were mindful, of everything, because there was auto nothing ;-)

- The usual gorgeous Fuji color we love - Fast AF - IBIS in medium format? Well hello there - Pretty lightweight. I think the Nikon D800 is slightly heavier. You "purist 6x6 guys" may say GFX is not medium format. Heck, is not even 6x4.5 bla bla bla. Well, I think anything bigger than 35mm is medium format. If you think medium format is reserved only for slow-paced studio work, with controlled lighting and tripod etc etc, GFX100S may change your perception. Medium forrmat for street photography or travelling, fo example? Sure why not. Now, if only if I have extra $6K to spend :)

"Then again ... so what?" An excellent summation. An excellent camera that most of us watching will never buy and probably couldn't make the most of if we did. Still, for the elite of skill and resource, the GFX 100S is the ultimate toy. They absolutely chose wisely to skip the glutted FF market. Fuji will dominate the digital MF world for years.

I'm not in Canada so I'm not partial or biased towards Sony, but I have owned a few Sonys, Canons, Nikons, Olympus and the Fuji XT3 (since sold). The GFX 100S is a beauty as are the lenses, but lens prices are outrageous (similar to the R5 lenses). However, the GFX 100S appears a far better bargain than the Sony A1. Always enjoy your unbiased reviews!

Have you notice any shadow banding issue that’s in the GFX 100??

I haven’t, but I only had it for a couple of days in non-taxing circumstances.
