Did you test either Bravia 9 or 7 with B&W content. Had horrible issues after the botched firmware update which have still failed to be resolved -- even after the FW update that dropped this week. The tonality of B&W content turns blue & there is almost navy blue colored blooming between mid gray & darker tones.

I went to Best Buy originally thinking I wanted to buy an LG G4 since it was recently touted as the best overall TV of 2024. However the TVs that really caught my eye while browsing turned out to be the S90D and the Sony Bravia 7. I'm glad this video confirms what my eyes were telling me.

S90D is a killer deal. Specially on BF, 65” was $1400 and has great sound quality. S95D’s one connect box has 40Gb bandwidth, lower than the max bandwidth of HDMI 2.1. So in essence, it downgrades the higher end model.

10:00 a clear example why B9 is better than B7. A lot more contrast and color. The thing B7 has going for it is that it's a budget TV in comparison. But does really well. But that is how it is with diminishing returns the expensive TVs offer. You gloss over when the B9 clearly wins basically any situation against the B7. But again, it's not by a wide margin. 11:04 no it's not matching it better than B9. Can clearly see they are nearly identical but B9 has the same "color" tone shade as Reference. The B7 is slightly more exposed. It didn't win Shadow detail. It was close but B9 won. 14:02 this is basically the reason or one of them for the B9 by enthusiasts. It cost more and it has diminishing returns. But that is how it is. It's the only TV resolving the detail fully. Also just like a MiniLED can often be within 90-95% of an OLED. So can the B7 be within 90-95% of a B9 in a lot of content. 15:07. That isn't just barely ahead. It is clearly ahead. The B7 has a huge cloudy smear the b9 almost cut that in half. You are just minimizing it to try and support your point of B7 is best. It's frustrating AF. The B7 simply isn't as good. But it makes up for it by being a lot cheaper. So it's a great TV. But people that buy the expensive B9 do so because they want the "max" capability. Most instances you showed had the B9 winning despite what you say. You 'color' your commentary as a B7 win because that is what the whole video is about. You have already set the premise and then find the results to match it. A side note: I will personally argue that I think Professional mode on the B9 is underwhelming. Like it's just a tad too dark. Tweaking it a little makes it better and still easily within the reference. In fact an OTB Professional mode is basically holding back the TV a lot. You are basically using 60% of what it can do.

@@Swecan76 Excellent review with great notes. I fault the use of the term “enthusiast” and think that person will go B9. FOMO likes to focus on relative cost, but ultimately absolute cost relative a person’s means is what counts. Could off axis performance, relative to a dimming zone matter on a very large TV seen close up. Obviously, if I am in the center and close up, the regions further away from center are going to lose more image quality. Is the overall effect in that scenario a reduction in depth and/or immersiveness? So people are saying go for the cheaper 7 because they can afford the large one. While there may be less loss off the center axis of the larger tv, is the picture in the center compromised, making the 9 the more OLED like.

Honestly I think professional and cinema modes should be avoided. Not just on the B9 but on any TV. It just kills the real potential of the TV to bring an image to life. The whole point of getting a top-end LED is to make it shine with all it has. No point in buying it and then only getting like 50-70% performance out of it at most. Personally I'm probably getting a B9 sometime next year if the cost goes down enough, but if it stays at well over €3000 I think I'll have to settle for something else instead (probably not a B7 though).

@ B9 and B7 aren’t just any LED LCD TVs because the vivid mode is accurate. However, if it is a dark room and the content is 4K Dolby Vision, Vivid mode will impact the blacks when max brightness isn’t needed. Furthermore, the comparisons don’t have 4000 nit content which the vivid mode on Sony may not be the choice of quality.

@ Yes, you are correct nothing in this video sold the B9, but that’s because the video was designed to sell the B7. But off axis performance on the B9, was better enough, and blooming performance for me to put out $ for it. I don’t want to buy a TV every year, and am more concerned with obsolescence and reliability which tilts me to the B9 instead of the B7 or an OLED.

It's not 10ms difference. Is roughly ~5ms difference at 120Hz. Sony is at ~9-9.5ms. OLED is at 4.9ms or so. Reaction time by professional players is over 120-140ms. Let me know when you think that 5ms vs 120+ms will "make a difference".

@@Swecan76 Also, games have lag in them that exceeds 5ms by a huge margin. I think 50 ms is really good for a game. So it would be 5 (TV latency) + 50 to 150 (Game Latency) + 250 (Average Player Latency) + 1-10 (wireless controller latency) Shaving 5ms off is really not that much It like saying that this TV can hit 1720 nits while the other one hits 1680 nits - you cannot see the difference.

Thanks for the affirmation! I have the Bravia 7 and often wonder how much better can an image get. Apart from the viewing angles, everything else to me is almost perfect. Luckily my 65 inch tv is mounted on a wall with a swivel and that mitigate most of the problems. 💪

Yeah, the viewing angles are the Achilles Heel of this TV and if you have a seat off to the side, the angle matters. Just like the X90L. It's almost hilarious cause I went to Costco to look at the S90C and D and both times it was next to a Sony. Since it was SDR, the Sonys were destroying the S90C and D which had slightly deeper colors but it was almost muted in brightness. Then you go off to the side and you're "I need the X90L with the viewing angles of the S90 - if it supports old 3d, it'd be the perfect TV".

18:46 The B7 shows better contrast and so would the B9 than the S90D right there. The B9 would have MUCH better off-angle than the B7 here. Also, if someone wants more color, just turn on live color or increase the color a few steps. The B9 has far better off-angle color retention. Can clearly see it. Stop saying it's the same as B7. If you want deeper contrast without even losing shadow detail just set black level from 50 to 49.

The Samsung QN85D with only 160 local dimming zones has the best overall black level performance of any mini LED I've ever seen or owned. The algorithm is nearly perfect and I suspect fewer zones allow for better control as it is less taxing on the processor. I started with the Hisense U8N, this TV has massively fluctuating black level and letterbox bars and cannot be watched in a dark room. Next I moved to the TCL QM851, which was better in that regard but still had fluctuating black level and blooming. On a whim, I decided to try the Samsung with pretty low expectations due to the zone count, but as it turns out it destroys both of these other offerings when it comes to overall black level performance. Inky black letterbox bars that never fluctuate, zero-blooming in real content and amazing color production. Also, it has the best shadow detail that I've seen on any TV period - ever. It's not as bright as the TCL or Hisense but plenty bright enough and it outperforms them in virtually every other way that I care about.

Before watching Jennifer Gala content on U9N, you need to force the HDMI to full dynamic range. Having HDM dynamic range in Auto, locks the TV in limited dynamic range mode and clips the highlights anything above 1000 nits. Please try U9N with HDMI set to full dynamic range, you will be surprised how different tone mapping will look and no clipping at all at 4000 nits watching the same Jen Gala content

Great review, one of your best! Yeah at the lower price the Bravia 7 is now cheaper than the X93L and is actually an amazing TV since it's not just a baby Bravia 9 but closer to an identical twin. Thank you for showing the off-angles. The drop-off is pretty stark as you've shown and ADS Pro is so much better even over the Bravia 9. The only improvement to the video would have been to use standard mode instead of vivid because most people will use these TVs in standard mode - is the number 80-90% that don't change the mode at all and definitely don't change it based on content.

@@vgnvideogameninja2930 Yeah, it has better angle viewing but as you can see the U8N with the ADS Pro was a different level at 30 degrees. The other stuff maybe just applies to the 85 inch model. Is the B9 an ADS Pro panel compared to a VA for the B7? We knew that Sony reserved a better panel for the 85 inch A95L but it was also the case with the A93L. Did they drop the panel for the B7? FOMO's video shows the opposite with a 4-way comparison. Sure, the B9 is better, in most cases, but is it worth the extra money and can you really see the difference are the main questions. I think for 80% of the people, the answer would be no especially since they'll stick in Standard mode. In fact, switching to Warm 1 in standard mode, turning the light sensor while setting brightness to the desired max level, and tweaking color is probably a much more significant improvement between the B7 and B9. If you made those improvements to the B7 and put it next to the B9, it would look remarkably better and vice versa.

@@vgnvideogameninja2930 I just watched the video again on a 1,000 nit SDR OLED. I wonder if the 85 inch Bravia 9 has the better panel while the 85 inch Bravia 7 doesn't. The X95L and X93L at 85-inch had the better panels but maybe Sony downgraded the Bravia 7 with slightly worse angles and reflections. However in this video, it's really hard to make the case for the 65 inch Bravia 9 at double the price. The angles are an issue but they are also a problem on the Bravia 9, just a bit better. The thing is that 80% of people will buy the Bravia 7 and keep it in standard. If you switch to Warm 1 and tweak the colors a bit, that upgrade will be more significant than buying the Bravia 7 or 9 cause the image will be insane compared to any TV out there.

There is something off with the brightness on your Bravia 9. Even in the settings menu, the rectangular box is supposed to be white, not gray 7:40. It should look like the B7 or even brighter because this will translate to how content looks. I think they neutered the Bravia 9 when they calibrated it and even the text in the settings menu is too dim on the Bravia 9 compared to a non-calibrated B9.

We have the old Sony A9G 77" OLED in a theater space - which isn't just a bland square room. There's plenty of space in the multi-functional gathering area behind the couch - the back wall is 30 ft away. There are lights on quite frequently, and we have a window just to the right side of the TV. We watch everything in Movie Mode - and the brightness level of our TV is set around 50-55%. We are sports watching junkies. We've never had issues with brightness when watching football, basketball, volleyball, baseball. We never watch sports in vivid - t's just an unnatural color profile. The Movie Mode colors are fantastic for sports. I get if you're in an exceedingly bright room during with a wall of windows, you want a higher level of brightness. But vivid colors, where the grass looks like it's green slime, and reds that bleed? Never been interested in this profile.

You didn't seem to mention the fact that besides the shadow detail and star scenes, the B9 looked higher contrast because of the more zones. So it looked more like the reference monitor for contrast, shadow detail could be tweaked in firmware. Also you could of compared the uncalibrated mode to reference to see if was any better, calibrated doesn't always mean better since it doesn't normally take into account the tone mapping and the local dimming algorithm which could make it darker than reference like it appeared here. So to compare 1:1 you should have used the uncalibrated mode for all of them if there is a large enough difference like it appeared here.

Because Fomo is full of it. He always does this kind of crap. The B9 won in every single instance but he makes up the results because they are close. The Shadow detail is just like reference monitor. Could clearly see it and the B7 slightly elevated and less color. The starfield, still had worse black levels and blooming control. There is more contrast on the B9, better at handling higher nit content. Off-angle and black level. He always have to go overboard. He could just say the B7 is very close to B9 and it's much cheaper so it's a good value buy. But no he has to say it's better. It's stupid.

@@Swecan76 Yeah pretty much, you can see it when he exposed the camera better for the TVs and then somehow magically the reference matched the B9 much better than the B7. 😄 The B7 only had more stars visible but probably less bright with more raised blacks, whereas the B9 has deeper blacks but brighter stars but less of them. Clearly none is better than the other and that's down to preference, since both are not perfect.

You should also review the Samsung QN85D. Very much like the Bravia 7 It actually outperforms it's bigger brother the QN90D. I'm amazed that so many reviewers aren't even looking at this TV, it is the biggest sleeper of 2024 and one of the best mini LEDs on the market period.

I used to have this 900F and sold it, because I bought the LG C1 and X95k. Didn't like either of those nearly as much as the Sony 900F. I saw a guy had a 900F for sale locally, so I went and bought it. It's way better than the 2024 X90L, which i also had. Since my 900F is now 7 years old, if it fails, I'll take another look at the qn85. It looked stunning in costco, for 4K images. But I wstch a lot of lower resolution content like Philo cable, so I wonder how the qn85 looks for that. My Sony 900F is a delight to watch lower resolution content.

@michaellubeck8464 The 900F is great- I owed one. Very natural image quality, great motion handling but black level and blooming are bad. The QN85D is a gigantic step forward from the 900F when it comes to color production, blooming control, brightness, black level, contrast ratio.... pretty much everything. Motion handling might be slightly better on the 900F going off memory and I'm not sure about low res upscaling on the QN85D because I only watch 1080p and 4k content. It's 1080p upscaling is excellent. If you like the 900F just keep it, buy some bias lighting for the back of the TV and you are good.

In Oz, the Bravia 7, LG C4 & the Samsung S90D sell for $3495, as does the UXAU because we don't have the U9N The LG B4 sell for $3295 I bought my lovely U8NAU on special for $1995, which it is there again, it is $200 off ATM; when I bought mine back in October, it was $2695 full price I love this thing. I leave it on filmMaker mode with the brightness down to 33 & contrast at 50. I don't have a sound bar for it, I turn the bass up to full & use my Edifier Bookshelf speakers fitted up top on a shelf. If I want a louder sound, I turn on my Yamaha amp with 2 x Polk S60 front speakers & 2 x Definitive Technology BP2006TL speakers. The BP2006TL speakers have a 250W sub built into the bass, and it is also adjustable; the Polk S60 puts out bass as well 🖖 BTW, grouse review as always FOMO 👍

AFTER firmware update and resetting all TVs, deleting calibration, the Bravia 9 needs its gamma adjusted to +2 and its shadow detail matched the B7 and reference monitor perfectly HOWEVER, specular highlights still not as bright as B7 but its blacks are still deeper/better in starfield and reflection handling is better and of course off angle is way better. Calibration did not degrade Bravia 9 - since its original calibration in June, my B9 received multiple significantly firmware updates and as of the current firmware, need to adjust gamma by +2 for perfect match

The Bravia 7 does sound great on paper, but each time I see it in the store those poor viewing angles really stand out. It looked grey and hazy because it was higher up on the wall and I couldn't see it head on. No, not possible - Bravia 3 has no dimming zones, no miniLED, way way worse contrast as a result and won't get brighter than an OLED even. Better to get the X90L!

I have a 75x95L, it is similar in its base to the Bravia 7, but has better screen coverage and viewing angles, but is not as bright as the B7. You compared the B7 and B9, and the B9 was a little worse in the shadows. Don't you think that this is due to calibration? During calibration, the brightness decreases a little, this decrease in brightness was enough to show a worse result in the shadows, and accordingly in color saturation.

Yeah i think so too it might have been made too dark. Just look at HDTVTest review of the X95L..... Or it could be a little different approach in local dimming and tone mapping for the B9, aiming for tighter control of the contrast since there are more zones it can. It doesn't need to spread out the light like the B7 does since it has less zones. But there are some downsides to that which are less details but you get darker blacks. But if you can have tighter control of the back-light why wouldn't the B9 have even better shadow detail than the B7?......surely it could be tweaked to make it better in firmware. Maybe he should have tried to compare the calibrated vs uncalibrated accurate mode to see if the uncalibrated mode was any better.

It's not even better at shadow detail. His calibration made it darker and you can easily, and obviously fix it. The B7 is uncalibrated, after calibration it would lose any of the extra over brightened part.

I have the Sony X85L (available in Europe), which is largely comparable to its bigger brother, the X90L. The main differences lie in the number of dimming zones and the processor: the X85L uses the reliable X1 processor instead of the X90L’s newer XR processor. While the X90L has more dimming zones, the X85L actually offers better blacks and contrast. So, the number of dimming zones doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Are we talking about the same TV? Your settings might not be optimized. I also own a Samsung OLED S95B, but with many types of content, I find the Sony X85L looks better than my Samsung, especially with Full HD material. Overall, I prefer the Sony’s picture quality over the Samsung OLED.

I’m looking at a 77 inch S90D or a 77’ Bravia 8. The latter is the only Sony at the size I’m interested in at the price range I’m considering ($3,000). I went with a similar budget with a 75" Bravia7. Here in Germany for that budget you can get the Bravia8 only in 65" and for the Bravia9 you would have to pay WAY more (it is not available in 65" here yet, and that is most likely way more expensive) Most likely you can get a Bravia7 too one or two sizes larger then the other models for the same price

@stopthefomo I'm trying to decide on a 2nd TV, I already have a Samsung S95d OLED for my movie room, for my large living I'm trying to decide between the Hisense 98" 98UX for $5k, or the Sony 98" BRAVIA XR X90L. Would be adding a warranty just in case. I can't find enough reviews on the 98UX, everyone seems biased against the brand due to the huge numbers of cheap $200-500 lower quality models they sell, and the Sony doesn't have the higher end features it seems the UX has, a year older, but does have a great processor. Not worried about viewing angles, watching is pretty minimal, mainly streaming shows and movies.

I agree engineering background. The Bravia nine is very nice but you could get a 65 inch Bravia seven at Costco, with a five-year warranty for about $1500. The Bravia nine is going to cost around $3000, and I believe it’s not going to come with a warranty. Personally, I would rather get a seven and parrot with his Sony Bravia nine sound bar , if I am going to spend an extra $1200. I could pair it with an Amplifier on Black Friday. Currently the sound bar is $1,200 but maybe it dips below or around $1000 . i can get a get way decent Amp for $200. got a black Friday price on Amazon $1515 and a 5 year warranty, out the door. It comes today and I am very excited

Bravia 7 for sports/movies in a bright room if you're directly in front of the TV but if you walk around a lot and watch off angle, then get the LG B4 83" or 77" because its brightness is similar to C4 but with less gaming features.

SURE! Turn off ambient/eco mode, Professional Mode, Gradation Preferred, Local Dimming Medium, Peak Brightness HIGH, Motion set to 1 or 2 depending on your tolerance for stutter and everything else is default! This is for dark room watching. In brighter rooms, change tone mapping to Brightness Preferred or use Standard Mode. For sports, use Vivid mode
