Sony Broke Their Own PS5 Feature.. Or They Intentionally Removed It (Probably That)

Activity Cards were a core selling point of the PlayStation 5 and its user experience. This was supposed to be the time saving feature that let you skip load screens and intros, getting you right to that part of the game. And since launch we've seen various system updates that have changed their appearance on the console. Notably with Firmware 10.00, Sony removed the 'Start/Resume Activity' button on Game Hubs. And it turns out, that has effectively broken the games that used to use Cards in a manner where they do actually skip screens. Let's go over this, talk about cards, maybe rant a little, and perhaps I'll even sing a sea shanty. I'm sure you'll find by the end of the video that I didn't, but it's a nice thought.

I'd rather just have a resume button for every game, where it loads your most recent save/autosave. It doesn't have to take you to a specific activity, just load the most recent save. Most games these days have a "continue" option on their main menu that takes you to the most recent save. If you could launch the game from the PS home screen that way, it would be great. I'd love to say that Sony should make that mandatory, but publishers like Ubisoft and EA would throw a fit, because they want to take you to a screen where they can advertise stuff to buy from their games.

The redundant play button underneath is unnecessary not the resume activity button. Titles still claim to have the ability to jump right back into the game in the official description. Game & legal info of some titles clearly states "PS5 features...get back into game almost instantly". No one clicks down to press the secondary play button, the resume activity button actually served a purpose.

The most annoying is, that they removed the "jump into your savegame" thing. Because it was very useful. I mean you was able to skip loading icons and textboxes or menus. I remember Persona 3 Reload. I was able to get into my savegame in around 4 or 5 seconds! Now i have to go the classical way which needs much more time. Wouldn´t make sense to remove that feature. Because it is up to the developer if they support it or not. Activity features maybe a bit queastionable, but not this feature!

@@jimchain7200 There was no need to waste energy with rest mode. You was able to jump into your last savegame (for more than one game, with your last played games) no matter if the conosle was removed completely from power before. Now it is gone.

In Persona 5 Royal, with the resume game feature, it would skip all splash screens and immediately load the last save file. Allowing me to load ingame within 15 seconds instead of around 1 minute. Noticed it hasn't been working anymore for around a month now and it actually disappointed me and didn't understand why. Such instant load-times were a system-seller feature for the PS5 on release. Having used that feature - it's a massive quality-of-life feature and would wish for it to come back. (I've never really cared about activities - but a functional resume option is great).

Persona 3 Reload went from a solid 30-45 second boot up all the way down to 5 seconds with the resume activity. If they could just keep this feature, that would be sick.

6:57 I think most people just want 2 options: Open or Continue. Open: starts the game with all the splash screens and takes you to the main menu. Continue: skips everything and just loads the most recent save file and throws you back in the game. Beyond that it just gets too in the weeds and too complicated for people to understand and thus engage.

If every game only made you sit through the opening splash screens for the first time you open it, it would be fine. When I was playing Jedi Survivor, I used the "resume" button a lot, but sometimes it wasn't available. I had no idea why it would be there some times and some times it wouldn't

I used to use this feature for Ghost of Tsushima....to directly jump into legends(online) without having to see the PS Studios, Suker Punch Logo and the Main Menu. Which was really a quality of life thing for me. Saved good seconds. Its a shame that many devs didn't adapt this feature and many people weren't even aware of this.

I love the activity cards.. They were really convenient for when you wanted to quickly travel to a particular location or quest or just quickly resume the game like in Final Fantasy VII.

For me, I've been playing video games for about 25 years and I've always just cold booted a game from the main menu, because that's always been the only way to really play games outside of stuff like rest modes or standby modes. Even if Activity Cards worked completely as intended it would be very hard for me to break a gaming behavior I've had for almost all my life.

Before this change I could click start activity in any random card for forbidden west and it would skip any intros any menus and put me into the game with the quest in the card as the active quest. Shorter time from ps5 menu to playing. This was even faster for spider-man 2. Now, for both of these game I have to open them, see the ps studios logo, navigate the menus, click continue. It's not a big deal, but it was pretty good "nice to have"

I think this is still working for astro btw if you click one of the speedrunning levels activity cards. Skips all intros all menus and puts you right at the start of the network speed run course! Great neat little thing for sure

It was nice for example fifa where it skipped all menus and allowed me to click 1 button and search for an online match for Ultimate team. Spider-Man it would skip the possible insomniac logo and marvel logo and ofc main start menu and drop right into the mission. Ppl got new consoles for fast speeds and better graphics but I guess they don’t want it that much. I wish they would add the Xbox version where it literally resumes right where you left off.

It should be just as he said in the video. Developers can choose to opt in and if they do the cards are then required to function the way that they do in PlayStation Studios titles. It’s simple standardization.

There has to be a legal reason. If you skip the splash screen then you're skipping the logos for companies involved with the game. Or in the case of Unity or Unreal, the game engine itself. There could be a legal binding agreement that certain company logos need to be shown on loadup.

Activity cards are crap. But you was able to jump into your last savegame skipping menus and loading icons. Means from 0% to 100%. Persona 3 Reload like 4 or 5 seconds out of nothing into your savegame. THAT was a great feature on many games. Means it was already there for PS5!

I've literally never used it. The last thing I used like it was the activities on Vita, where if you scroll down from the game it shows you little things (as in, not just trophies) you and your friends have done. I really liked that. Then devs stopped supporting it, and it just became a lit of trophies you and your friends got.

In theory, it sounds great on paper. I did use the cards with specific games in certain modes. I know that most people don’t take advantage of this feature, but I enjoyed clicking on a card to go directly to a specific mode or to choose multiplayer over single-player. If the cards were more accurate, I would use them more often.

Activity cards seem to target a specific kind of game. I prefer to suspend my game and pick up right where I left off. I even added a battery backup to help the PS5 sleep through power outages.

Things that don't have parity across consoles are a harder sell for devs that ship on multiple platforms. Unless 1st party forces them to use it, devs are probably only going to do the bare minimum if it's not something they can use on the other platform.

The problem about the activity card is, for some reason, there are games that encounter bug after resuming activity. I've encountered this 4x in 4 different games in the last 12 months so I stopped using this. The last one I remember is Evil West where the game didn't save any progress after resuming activity even if I manually saved multiple times, good thing I have a back up saved data.

I've never once used this feature. When I sit down to game, I'm not someone who needs to jump in quickly. I give myself time to play and I'm fine with the splash screens and whatnot. In many cases, those are very short or completely skippable now anyway. I think I did try to use them at one point but didn't see the point and/or it was on a game that didn't work with the feature so I just ignored it after that. I'm guessing that's the case with most gamers. I will say this though, Sony should effing communicate with the community. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

The problem is that they never worked properly the few times I tried them The resume button often changed the settings of games, launching them in fidelity mode when I selected performance mode in both the OS and the game, or not launching the game in the correct language... For activity cards, most of the time they simply don't appear. But when they do some appears as "current activity" when we finished or ignored them long time ago, they are also supposed to not spoil but they often do it.

What part of the PS5 OS design has NOT been a resounding failure? Whatever seconds you save from using an activity card, you waste by fiddling with the menu and deciding which one to use. People don't care about cards, they want themes, for the PS6 all they need to do is put the PS3 XMB with the PS4 activity feed and the people will be happy.

Ok for trophy people, why is it so much worse on ps5 to look at trophies compared to ps4? Why can’t you look at the whole list right away when you click the button? You have to click again to view all and then you have to sort them again by percentage owned. So annoying

When I intentionally and accidentally launched the game via card it was always jarring for me. I'm autistic and I like routine, starting up a game and choosing my save to continue is routine for me. I guess there's a number of people like me out there. After I started up the game with a card it would be so jarring for me I would close it and start it again normally to calm down.

I used the resume activity button once. I pressed it accidentally on a game i already had open and it loaded the most recent save, losing me some progress. I see the point of them like you say, but i don't trust developers to actually use console features like this properly or predictably so i just avoid stuff like this. The cards themselves showing progress are still nice of course.

Problem with third party games is that the contracts signed first those games usually say game “test” will not utilize Xbox feature “example A” While the other contract for the other console says PlayStation is forbidden from being able to use feature “example B” in the game “test”

I don't use cards for many games at all... HOWEVER I used them consistently EVERY SINGLE TIME in GTA Online to directly spawn into the Casino and spin the daily wheel for daily in-game rewards or directly load into online/single player without accessing menus

The latest patch seems like a good middle ground. There's no need for the "launch activity" option when most developers don't use it correctly. But I still like the activity cards for the time estimates and game help (when it's used).

I never used it or even tried to use the activity feature. I’m only now recently testing it out because people are complaining it was removed. And yeah it doesn’t work. Sony needs to mandate features they make be implemented into games. Otherwise you’re going to get a bunch of games that use it and don’t use it. Leaving the feature looking like it’s mess of implementation. Which is exactly what happened. Which it gone now I can see why people like it and how it can be very useful. I hope they bring the resume feature back.

I'm one of the few who apparently use the Activities 😅 and yeah, this being missing/broken really sucks, it was very neat and useful at times! PS: In Canada, and I got the Welcome tab on my console now! 🎉

Never owned a PS5 but that feature (originally letting you skip load / menus / splash screens) sounds awesome. More games need to implement this. That would be one compelling selling point over PC gaming. Worth nothing Xbox Series supports quick resume which is similar but lets you suspend almost any game (up to about 5 games at a time). This is 1 big feature that makes me play xbox over PC.

The thing is, at first i was excited about card but realistically id only use it for finish 100 percenting games like collectable etc. But even if the devs made cards for that id still end up just going to google/youtube. Just cuz im use to that after 15 plus years of doing it that way

I think their line of thinking must be that by switching the skipping screens tech off, it makes Activity Cards respond more consistently across games. Thus making it more likely people will use them.

I think Cards are needed for the Returnal platnium, anything outside of that i never used

This feature gets muddied up more when you first play the PS4 version (on the PS5), which won’t have the activity card feature, then play the PS5 version which does have it but you don’t need to use it as you have all the knowledge fresh from playing the PS4 version

I only used it on Sony games (the only ones that actually had them working basically) to boot fast, but never to specific misions, those where broke anyway.

This has been an issue for me since the update. I was playing Ghost of Tsushima during the update window and used the cards often to resume my game. After the update the resume activity button was removed and only says “play game”

It was only usable with some games in fairness. It was awesome for Astro Bot.

No devs want to program activity cards it's a complete waste of time and resources. It has taken Sony awhile to start to give in and slowly roll out the reduction of their features.

When did Sony remove the ability to click on a KZbin URL from a message?! This was something I used quite often. Playing a game, while watching/listening to a KZbin video on the side. 😢 I couldn't believe they never made this an official feature. I just went to do it and noticed it no longer shows the KZbin link in a message as clickable. The only thing worse than not adding useful features (such as a quick headphone volume up/down shortcut), is to remove interesting features such as this.

Whatever happened to watching videos from youtube at the same time as playing the game. And automatic playback feature that xbox has is way better.They need to do that
