The craziest part of all these acquisitions is realizing how Disney lowballed Star Wars from George Lucas. I mean Sony paid nearly the same amount for just Bungie that Disney did for the entire property of Star Wars. Also Sony definitely bought Bungie so that at E3 2023 they can go on stage and announce they're working on the next chapter of the "Halo Killer" HAZE

It sucks that you can buy an expansion for 60-100 bucks and not be able to play it 2 years later. I *HATE* all the people going "Oh Sony should buy ___". Not only is it REALLY not healthy for all these companies to be buying eachother so they can screw eachother over, but Sony is an ABYSMAL company now that they've handed the reigns over to their US branch. The branch that has caused massive an irreparable damage to the game industry (ever wonder why the "Fighting Game Dark Age" happened on PS2? All Sony USA. Wanna know why Capcom let go of most of their old fighting game staff? Sony USA). Sony's censorship policies are not just some online meme, they've actively killed the Senran Kagura franchise (the dude in charge quit and SK7 is basically cancelled), ruined Happy Manager and nearly ruined Gal Gun 2. Their massive policy shift basically nipped the Japanese home VR market in the bud. Sony doesn't even HAVE a Japanese studio anymore because everyone at Sony Japan quit and what's left is now run by a French dude (a cool French dude but still). Sony has been actively screwing over their Japanese fans to the point where the PS5 trailer apparently was in English with unreadable Japanese subtitles. At this point Sony has to keep assuring their Japanese fanbase that they still care about them when their actions clearly show they don't. As such, Nintendo now owns 90% of the Japanese gaming market. Alas this doesn't matter though because Japan only accounts for 10% of the global gaming market now. But if you're like me an only really enjoy Japanese games? Yeah that's pretty catastrophic. It means Japanese gaming is just Mobile and Nintendo and that's it. They don't really do PC in Japan and all the PC ports of Japanese games are hastily cobbled together for the Western audience. But yeah if Sony buys any Japanese company, expect their games to get more toned down and Western-centric. As such the ONLY company I'm "okay" with Sony buying is Konami. Yeah it means we'll never get another Rumble Roses ever again but...well...it's not like we're ever going to get another Rumble Roses anyway and I mean it's not like Konami can get any WORSE. May as well.

Another thing that should be brought up in regards to Bungie, is they received some substantial investments from Netease in the past couple years. Those contracts are also still in place for their likely next IP (maybe more? who knows, other than those involved). So their next game very likely couldn't be a Sony exclusive thing even if they wanted it to be. This allows them to not have to worry about defaulting on any of that if they had any trouble with it, if something horrible came to pass and gives Sony the bill, though its much less likely now with a new overhead like that. As they mention, the new IP could be show a lot of promise to Netease, and thus Sony as well.

Not sure what you mean by "they can't win". They aren't buying Bungie for Destiny itself but for the talent at the company for future endeavors. Sony get Bungie's tech, money, and expertise and Bungie gets money to further the game. 1/3 of that 3.6 billion is being used for employee retention. It's massively obvious they're more interested in their brain than the game itself. Plus if they stay multiplatform, Sony gets a cut of revenue from every person on every platform. People looking at this as if Sony getting a raw deal out of it are limiting their viewpoint massively.

To me Destiny isn't even very good, it's average at best, and unless Sony think the Oni or Marathon IP is worth billions, then IMO they got MASSIVELY ripped off on that purchase. In the wake of the Activision purchase, people on twitter were saying "I've got inside knowledge and Sony is doing a purchase of it's own to rival this ;)" my mind jumped to 2K or EA, or Square enix, you know, massive publishers that own multiple developers who IP's that are highly sought after (AKA something equal to Activison/Blizzard), and then the wet fart drops that they spent WAY too much on a SINGLE developer, who only has 1 active IP that is of fairly middling quality.
