Sony CCD-FX230 Review & Test

I bought one of these at goodwill for 10 bucks. Has the case, all accessories, and even the user manual. And the camera itself is in incredible shape and works flawlessly. Tested it on some sealed new old stock tapes i bought (i will never forgive myself for unsealing them 😭). I really really love this camera and will use it alot for retro style siren recordings, along with my RCA CMR300 i replaced the belts in.

Hey sometimes you gotta replace your old tapes with new ones. You can still buy new tapes on Amazon and eBay. They aren’t manufactured anymore but there is quite a bit of new tapes out there still. And that’s a great find for $10. I really enjoyed the footage that came out of this camera

This one is actually my dads too haha I’ve heard capacitors go bad in them so hopefully it will work. And yours may or may not need a new battery too. Especially if it’s as old as the camera. Good luck though let me know what you think of it if you can get it working🤙

I love how intricate older camcorders are. I have a DCR-TRV320 and a DCR-DVD101, and the TRV has more buttons and controls (which i like), while the DVD has a decent amount of buttons for its time, but it is a noticeable difference. I love physically touching what I select instead of menus, especially considering that Sony camcorders tend to have an annoying problem with the rotary encoder.

Yes the my definitely do have that issue. And yea there is something about the mechanical aspect of them that makes them so fun to use

Yeah I really like this camera just need to use a new tape when I film with it next. These clips with it and my next test footage video are filmed on a really old tape so it’s probably dirty. But I really like to colors that I produces

your camera has problems with capacitors leaking on the audio board so there is noise in the sound .. I have the similar version CCD-FX700e Hi8 I repaired it I changed about 89 capacitors and now it works perfectly for vintage video recordings 😄

So the only time I makes the noise in the audio is when there is a mic plugged into it. You think it’s still capacitors? Or do you think there is dirt in the external mic plug in interfering with the connection?

@@brandoncameracollection hmm in the last seconds of the video I noticed that you do not use the microphone and there is no noise, then maybe your external microphone has a problem or in the microphone socket of the camera try to clean the plug of the camera with contact cleaning spray, and if the problem remains then maybe your external microphone has a problem, try another microphone and see if there is a problem! Great video! I have the Sony CCD-FX330 with a color viewfinder. Was that just the higher end model of the same year? I got mine at a Goodwill for $10 and held onto it for over a year. Finally got around to getting a battery for it and it fully works! Glad there's at least one person on KZbin that reviewed the same camcorder I have :)

Yeah I think the higher the model the better the model was and more functions.

Yes definitely if you get one of these or a similar model make sure it’s in a good working condition. A lot of these so fx models end up having bad capacitors on the inside that end up leaking and ruining the camera. So just be on the look out for that. But yes it would be great for horror it would have great grunge look to it.

When I watch back a tape on my camcorder through the viewfinder, there is no audio. I see that there is a speaker on the top of the camcorder so I am not sure why there is no audio?

I’d have to look at mine again but the thing on top s the microphone. I don’t believe this has a playback speaker on it. If you can can hook it to a tv try watching it back that way you will probably hear audio through your tv

I had a PANASONIC NV-S20B VHS-C Palmcorder but it broke which was annoying, would you recommend getting another one online or are there better cameras to use than that? I’m not using it for anything professional just a fun hobby so I can film random shit

Well there are definitely better cameras to use but as long as you enjoy using it and you like the way the videos look then definitely get another one. I have a jvc gr-axm50 and it’s also vhs-c and I love that little camcorder. The video is just awful but that’s why I like it. It gives your video a real retro look.

They are the same tape hi8 is just the digital version of video 8.

How is your camera recording in color? I got one and it's only in black and white.

So the viewfinder is black and white but if you capture the footage to your computer or hook it up to your tv you will have a color. So it records in color just a black and white viewfinder

Because honestly the vid box kind of have some frame drops in it so I wanted to upgrade it to the clear click to digital converter

I'm also going to get a Tbc time base corrector deck so I can upload VHS videos to my computer without any shaking and distortion

Ok I would recommend the ClonerAlliance ViewLite AV over the clearclick devices. You can download an AI enhancement software on your computer to make videos look better but the video quality from the ViewLite I find much better than the ClearClick devices
