Hi Maarten. Fantastic review, best one I have found for explaining all the modes and features. I've wanted this camera for nearly 4 years and finally bought it the other week, now that I can afford it thanks to its replacement coming out. I too have viewed the review many times as it's as good as having a user guide. many thanks. Chris.

I keep coming back to this review as I find it very informative in my deliberations as to whether to purchase the camera for the long term. I find the review balanced and overall positive in the area that means the most to me: image quality. As an ordinary photographer I just need to take the snap as I see it. If the children are smiling then great! But it's the quality that's important to me, and will be when I look back in the years to come. Once again, thanks Maarten.

I had the first 10 years of shooting with just a 50mm f1.4. I certainly don't miss those days, You can't always get closer to your subject. Air show is a good example.

Hi Maarten, I wanted to ask your opinion on whether you think the images from the RX1R are better quality than those from the A7 with 35 F2.8 Zeiss lens. I understand the differences in the two cameras but have never had the opportunity to shoot with the RX1R and compare them to the A7. Since you have shot with both I thought I would ask you if you can see better color, clarity, etc. using the RX1R? I have used the A7 and the A7R and I do like the A7 better but still curious about the RX1R.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 10 жыл бұрын
To my eye, they are reasonably equivalent. Unless you have some quirky reason to prefer the RX1r, I'd go with the A7. I will qualify that by saying that I'm not a pixel peeper - if that's the level detail you'd like, I'd recommend you check with dxomark or another review site.

You should get paid by Sony to do this, very informative and easy to understand. Thanks for taking the time to do a thorough review, i have an A7R and is looking to trade someone for the RX1. Been watching reviews all week and found this great video!

AVCHD files should not be accessed as files from the card directly (but you'll find them in the "private" folder). Use Sony's image editing app or a video editing application (one that is familiar with AVCHD) and point the File/Open at the disk, or at the folder and it will find, import and "extract" the files properly. Copying the files directly will result in files that don't work or need to be converted. Which editing app are you using?

how do you turn off the AF eye feature....To save battery i want to turn this feature off and have focus start when i press the shutter down and lock focus at the half way point and not before......???? second question, WHY would you have the clear image off , how does it effect the image if i have it on shooting at 35mm as compared to having it off? REPLY
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
The RX1r does not support AF eye - you cannot turn it either on or off. When using the clear image zoom, the image is cropped on the sensor, so the resolution is lower. Sony uses pixel interpolation to "recover" the missing pixels.

You seem to be a Sony guy, and, based on what I've seen from you here and on Vimeo, I'd be interested in your thoughts on a decision I have coming up. Most of my experience is with Nikon, which, as you may know, uses Sony sensors; particularly in the D800E. As I find myself needing more "video" capabilities, I'm facing a challenge in selecting between still that does video, or dedicated video. I was thinking Canon XF100 until I saw your Sony NEX VG30 review. Like what the sensor gives (but maybe I'm a snob about size?), though not so much the experience with tripod mounting. I've also had my eye on the Sony RX1 for a long time and think I'd go for the RX1r, assuming it could at least hold its own for video in terms of my criteria. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks again for this video, and all your hard work (including the biking stuff).

Great review! Compared with RX1, only difference on this one is no low pass filter? BTW, how did you generate the nice photo video galleries?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 10 жыл бұрын
Peng Bai Thanks. That's my understanding, I didn't have a RX1 to do all the comparisons. Those photo galleries were generated using Apple TV.

***** Thank you for the reply! It seems a great camera, but for me still can't justify to have it alongside my fuji x system... Apple TV? Screensaver function?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 10 жыл бұрын
Peng Bai On the Apple TV you can use either the slide show or the screensaver to generate galleries - we often have it on while we listen to music.

Another question...with the clear image on, BUT i do not use the zoom, i take the photo in 35mm, will the clear image being on affect my photo, or will it be just as if i had the clear image turned off, because i took the photo in 35mm and DID NOT use the zoom?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
That's correct, unless you zoom, there is no clear image effect. I would recommend that you leave it off and crop your photographs in photoshop or lightroom, that will likely provide better results.

Exceptional review Maarten. What's your opinion of the lack of stabilizer? It sounded like the tendency to selecting 1/80 was not ideal. I wonder if the rx2r will include this and at this late stage in its existence it would be better to wait given the price point. Thanks again.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 10 жыл бұрын
crow4868 Thanks for your kind comment. For stills, it's usually easy to work around the lack of a stabilizer, for video you'd prefer to shoot with a tripod or monopod. And although 1/80 is not ideal, most of us are using the A,S,M modes, so are not really bothered.

I have to say, of all the reviews of this camera that I've seen on youtube, yours has been the most informative and in my opinion, most objective. I'm curious if after all these months the novelty has worn off or if you feel the same way as in this review.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words - I appreciate the comment. Sadly, after the review I had to return the camera to Sony. And that was last summer - so I re-watched my review to think about your question. I've also reviewed a bunch of cameras since, and I think if I was going to purchase a full frame camera I might prefer the A7 or A7r, which have improved menu systems and interchangeable lenses over the RX1r. Other than that, the technology - sensor, processor and features - is about the same. If you'd like more detail - please watch my A7r review.
@IPlayGtr
@IPlayGtr 10 жыл бұрын
***** Thank you for the reference, oddly enough I'm drawn to the RX1R more than the A7R. It seems to remind me more of the past when all I had was an M2 and a 35 Summicron. For some reason I took better pictures then than I do today with all the improvements in technology. I think I would prefer to have to work harder and depend on my ability to use a 35mm lens than go back to changing lenses and carrying large bags. Thanks again.

Great review Maarten. I have been considering the RX1R m 2. I need a camera for travel and mountaineering. I am not a professional, I just want a point and shoot that will give me the best possible results. You only get that, once in a life time shot of a sunrise from the top of a mountain. It has to be small, and I can't be carrying/changing lenses on the top of a mountain. Is this the camera for my needs, or would you recommend something else. Thank you very much, John from UK.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
While I don't want to knock this camera in any way - it's a powerful and capable device with a large sensor. However, (as someone else who's not a professional) I'd take either the RX100 (I, IV or V) and/or the RX10 III or IV. The RX100 series is small enough to fit in nearly any pocket, yet has all the features you'll ever need - I've loved it every time I've shot with one. The RX10 is larger, but has a most amazing lens, with a 600mm reach, which might be very useful. You'll find reviews on my channel of both. Hope this helps.

The newer camera, if this style, size and configuration appeals, is the RX1Rm2. Unless you have a desperate need to be at the front of the tech curve, I think, for style, size and configuration, it's still a very good choice.

I HAVE THE CAMERA RX1R, THE 2 AS THE SAME LENSE, HOWEVER, ONCE YOU USE THE ZOOM THIS LENS LOSES IT'S ADVANTAGE.......I HAD IT REPAIRED TWICE, BOTH TIMES THE LENS LOST IT'S ABILITY TO FOCUS AND TWICE THE TURN AROUND TIME WAS MORE THAN 3 MONTHS BECAUSE SONY USES OUT SIDE SERVICE AND THEY DO NOT MAINTAIN ANY INVENTORY........I PURCHASED THE VIEW FINDER TWICE BECAUSE I LOST IT ONCE, THE SECOND ONE I FASTENED ON WITH TAPE, IT IS NOW VERY SECURE AND I CAN EASILY REMOVE IT......I PURCHASED THE OPTIONAL VIEWFINDER BECAUSE ON A SUNNY DAY IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE YOUR SUBJECT WITH THE LED SCREEN....AS FAR AS USING THE MACRO LENS SETTING, FORGET IT, I LEAVE THE LENS ON IT'S DEFAULT SETTING.....I HAVE MISSED SHOTS DO TO IT'S SLOW AUTO FOCUSING SYSTEM, I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THE CAMERA NOT BEING ABLE TO FOCUS PROPERLY WITH NO FAULT OF MINE, THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM BUILT INTO THE SYSTEM BECAUSE IT HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN SEVERAL TIMES.....I ALSO HOOKED UP THE LENS CAP SO I WOULD NOT LOSE IT, IT NOW HANGS SECURELY FROM THE CAMERA BODY......I CARRY EIGHT BATTERIES BECAUSE OF THEIR SHORT LIFE, THEY ARE VERY SMALL AND DO NOT PRESENT A PROBLEM TO CARRY.......YES, IT IS A GREA CAMERA IN THE 35MM MODE, THE EHTIRE SET UP COST ME 2,800.00 FOR THE CAMERA AND ANOTHER 500.00 FOR THE VIEW FINDER WHICH IS A MUST HAVE........BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THIS OUTFIT IS TOTALLY PRICED BEYOND COMMON SENSE, I MUST HAVE BEEN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, I MADE THIS PURCHASE BECAUSE I COULD HAVE PURCHASED A STATE OF THE ART 35MM LENS AND PLACED IT ON MY A99 OR A99/2 AND SAVED THOUSANDS AND STILL GOT TERRIFIC IMAGES.........WOULD I PURCHASE THE RX1R2, ABSOLUTELY NOT, I WENT TO TRADE IN THIS MODEL WHICH IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND I WAS OFFERED UNDER 800.00 FOR THE CAMERA AND VIEWFINDER WITH EVERYTHING IT ORIGINALLY CAME WITH, SO I GUESS I WILL DIE WITH IT, THATS 25% OF MY ORIGINAL COST, YET I SEE IT BEING SOLD BY THE PEOPLE WHO SOLD IT TO ME NOW USED FOR JUST UNDER 2,000.00 DOLLARS.....HMMMMMM!.....LOOKS LIKE A GOOD BUSINESS TO BE IN.......

In the past 2 years, twice in for repair and parts are hard to come by, both times the camera was in the repair shop more then 2 months waiting for parts, plus Sony farms it's repairs out to a third party....Once you leave the 35mm mode your image quality drops.....Camera is slow to lock focus....Much to expensive just to be used as a 35mm lens camera,, because of this i made mistake purchasing it....My repair problems could be just do to the fact i have a lemon...Either way i can not recommend this camera....

Another great video which I have enjoyed very much. The Sony RX1, RX1R and RX1R Mark II are a great series of cameras. But the price is expensive. Here in the UK, the Nikon D750 plus 24-120mm F4 lens combination is much cheaper than the RX1. As for the RX1R Mark II, well this is even more expensive. Having said all of this, if I were to win the lottery, the RX1R Mark II is on my "Cameras to Buy" list along with the Leica Q and Leica SL (plus multiple lenses).
