Hi Dustin, does the 15 mm account for the extra space designed in to allow for the software corrections that then leave you with a 16 mm view ?. or is it corrected actually to 15 mm and thus designed as 14 mm to allow for the corrections?
@DustinAbbottTWI Жыл бұрын
Most lenses are designed that if they have heavy distortion the true focal length remains after correction.

Hard to believe no comments here... This is really great detailed review for very popular lens! Thank you. I just got one renewed from Amazon, looks brand new, not sure if it sharp as your copy

One of the weird byproducts of my channel getting hacked this last weekend was that after restoration some videos have (at least for now) lost all their comments.

Im happy Sony released new APS-C lenses. I hope this means they are updating the A6000 series. I like the photos I get out of the A6400, But the ergonomics and wobbly video need help. I still use the APS-C wide lenses in the A7IV for 4k 60p video but would love a nice APS-C travel/backup camera.

Is it possible to shoot this lens on a full frame camera without black corners in full frame 1:1 crop? (24mm by 24mm)
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
I didn't test that possibility, though I suspect it might be possible.
@rachel75502 жыл бұрын
A little confused, would I have to have an adapter to connect this to the a7riv? And do you think it’s as sharp as the 14 gm? Not as worried about barrel distortion if so. I just like the better aperature although I will always keep my 14 gm 😄
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
This is designed for APS-C, so you will get only 28mp of resolution (you have to use it in APS-C mode). It’s not really a replacement for the 14GM

Hi @DustinAbbottTWI. Thanks for your review. I have a big doubt. I would like to buy a wide angle for my aps-c camera and I don't know whether to choose the 11-20mm 2.8f Tamron (720$) or this 15mm 1.4f g sony (620$). What would you recommend? I like to photograph landscapes, do some street photography, some travel photography. Has anyone tried these lenses? Thank you!
@DustinAbbottTWI Жыл бұрын
Buy the zoom if you prioritize the flexibility of the focal range; buy the prime if you want more flexibility in low light, the ability to play with depth of field more, and or if you want that extra little bit of sharpness.
@gitithadani2 жыл бұрын
Software correction is now built into the design of lenses to get the compact size & fit in the AF motors. Pricewise though it is just a little less than the sony ff 20mm. And the sigma ff 20mm I picked up for 500$. So the difference between FF & APS-c is not so much pricewise but still more compact sizewise. Maybe sony will bring out a new aps-c camera once the chip shortage is under control.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
A new body is definitely warranted.
@buffoonmorondonkey2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the excellent review. How would this lens on apsc body compare with a7c with samyang 24mm f1.8? The size and weight is very similar. I like 24mm focal length. And now that they've released this lens, im not sure if i should upgrade to a7c/samyang 24mm f1.8.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Considering that the sensor resolution is the same, I suspect you'll get a fairly similar performance, as both lenses are high performing.

Now we only need a great APS-C camera to go with it. The A6XXX series of cameras is long overdue of an update.

You want something "superior" to the a6600, but at what cost?
@MrMartinek992 жыл бұрын
Thanks for detailed review Dustin! I'm not much fun of this focal length. But this lens give me some hope, that Sony will continue with releasing also less wide apsc prime lenses. What do you think? I would like to see some apsc optimised 20 or 24mm f1.4 lens, but I'm worry, that Sony have that covered by FF lenses in their checklist :-(. I know about Viltrox alternative, but hope for something a litlle bit more premium...
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
I'd check out the Samyang AF 24mm F1.8. Yes, is is a full frame lens, but it is very compact and amazingly good optically. It's weather sealed, has the focus hold button, etc...
@cameraprepper79382 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the text review. I hope that Sony will make some GM "CQ" Lenses which are of highest possible image quality without flaws that have to be corrected in software, fx a 15mm 1.8 or 2.0 for APSC that are both compact and with very high image quality and a 24mm 1.8 or 2.0 for full frame. I also hope for professional Cameras in APSC with high resolution EVF´s.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
I certainly agree on the EVF. I was reminded during this time when I spent so much of my shooting on my a6400 how much I despise the EVF on it.
@bondgabebond49072 жыл бұрын
Did you check the focus speed using the a6600 with the bigger, more powerful battery found in the full frame bodies? The a6400 is still using the dinky battery.

We did use an a6600 for tests as well, but there wasn't any huge difference.

Thanks for this good review. This lens looks like good for many vloggers. But for landscape and architectur the Barrel distortion is much crazy. I know about the correction profiles, but this means reducing of original quality. Sigma is going the same way, but for me it's not a good way. It's only a good way to reduce price, weight and dimensions. Hobby fotographers will be very happy with this lens, it's perfekt for holidays or hiking.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
It is tough, as going small does often come with some optical compromises.

The lens is primarily for video on gimbals, not high end architecture work. Take the right tool for the right job. If you don't understand what the right tool looks like, do more research before complaining.

The 15mm is after corrections, so Sony leaves plenty of room for correction.

I have the A6400 - no IBIS ! None of the new releases have OSS ??? Sigma, and a gimbal ? about the same price as this lens.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a downside. Most of Sony's full frame cameras do have IBIS, but many of their current APS-C bodies do not.
@robertcudlipp34262 жыл бұрын
The question that I, and most people, will pose, is how can this oh so late apsc offering be preferred to the legendary Sigma 16 1.4? Add value for money into the equation, and it's difficult to see why you would choose the Sony. Doubtless, Sony diehards will demur.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
There are reasons, for sure. The Sony is much smaller and more compact, has far more features (including thorough weather sealing, AF/MF switch, focus hold button, aperture ring, etc...), it has lower CA, better color, faster AF.
