I have the EV-S5000 with the same gear issue but mine has three split sections. This can be fixed without 3D printing but it takes time. Once fixed you can not tell that it was ever broken.

Great video on EVS7000. I have done the exact same repair using a new S-reel I bought on eBay only because one guy had one. My unit is working perfectly except a separate don't-care issue where the LED display went out out on the sliding control panel. All keys and indicators on the panel are functional , only the LED display is dead... any ideas appreciated. For those searching for a different unit with PCM audio, the EVS3000 has PCM and does not have cracked reel issue. The tape mechanism on EVS3000 is a Sony design and this one I heard came from Memorex and is much faster on tape load but not reliable as you see. The EVS3000 is 2 years older (1992).

Hi 12voltvids, where did you get these Hi8 VCRs? Also, I have seen a video of a Sony EV-S2000 and it does not have the same mechanism as this one, it has the same mechanism as my Sony Video Walkman GV-8. Is the mechanism like the EV-S2000 better, does the tape spool gear fail too?

This video is awesome. I have a couple of EV9000's, each with different problems. One of them only loads the tape half way around the drum and just hangs there and thn shuts down the motor after a few seconds. Any ideas what that may be please ? Kind regards Rob

Hi there, It great video. I have the same vcr but Pal version. I hope you can give me advise. My ev-s9000e = ev-s7000 It plays and records tape without problem. But the led and lcd display on the machine gone off. Therefore I cannot the clock etc.. Could you tell me which part should I look at? I appreciate you advise Alan
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 жыл бұрын
Alan Wong I would have to research that as I haven't run into that problem before. Considering that the LCD and VFD displays are on totally different boards, the VFD on the tray that slides out, and the LCD on the front control board. Unless they are connected together somehow, but I really don't know at this point as I don't have the unit apart in front of me. I would have to look at a schematic to know how they are interconnected.

Nothing is holding value these days. You should see my plasma TV collection. 8 and counting, all working. Nobody wants to hang onto electronics much anymore. I have a few vintage pieces that I should get rid of, but I hang onto them for the nostalgia. I was going through my storage unit recently, and there is a lot of junk in there that I am going to go though and get rid of. Old units that I will never repair, old manuals and stuff. Found a box full of 5 1/4" floppy disks. Why I still have those I don't know. Into the shredder they need to go, as there is likely personal data on them.

I have an ev-s7000 and has the same problem. I recently acquired an ev-s700 for parts. According to the service manuals and part numbers the reels don't look the same. The 700 is a 2 piece gear, is there anyway to make them work? Thanks

The evs5000 and 7000 uses the same reel table, the other ones used a different table. Unfortunately I have been unable to find a replacement for mine, which is unfortunate as it was a very expensive machine which is basically useless to me now.

Brian Taylor Brass isn't magnetic, and that is how they limit the torque. The magnet on the hub allows the steel disk below to rotate, and also passes that magnetism through to the hall sensor below.

Hi 12V, It's very difficult to service a Video 8 VTR? The level of difficulty to service the Video 8 VTR's, are the same of the Betamax?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
+LibraAudioLaboratory Other than the mechanism is smaller they are similar. 8mm use a 210' wrap on the head drum as opposed to 180 for VHS and Betamax.Even though the video portion of the signal only occurs for 180' before being handed off to the opposite head, this allows additional information to be written, that being time code and dub-able digital stereo sound.

Can you epoxy/superglue it to fix the crack?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 жыл бұрын
riceandpotatoe The gear is made out of nylon, and as such super glue will not stick to it. Epoxy is in the same boat. I haven't tried JBWeld but might give that a try on the broken one to see if that will save the patient.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
+Brenden John superglue won't stick to nylon. Super glue is an acrylic.
@BrendenJohnFilms
@BrendenJohnFilms 8 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand. Perhaps I don't know what nylon really is; but isn't the gear plastic? I'm pretty sure I've super glued a few plastic things together. In any event, I thought it could be a simple easy way to fix it, now I'm having second thoughts on buying this model.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
+Brenden John None of the glues I have tried stick to nylon, which is a synthetic material, not plastic. It just peels off. The only way I have been able to make these gears work I to heat the material and fuse it back together. The cause of the Crack is the metal insert the gear is formed on. When it heats up the metal expands and the gear does not, and it cracks. It is a very common problem on the eve 2000, 5000 and 7000. They all fail. This is the 3rd time line has gone bad. The last time I robbed the part from my evs2000, so it is broken too. The part is no longer available from Sony. I would stay clear of this model. Or do that matter all the Sony home deck type 8mm units. Mine works as long as I don't fast forward so I use only for the odd tape that has pcm sound. For the rest of my archiving work I have a couple of digital 8 cameras I use for playback.

+12voltvids I am going to guess, based on your video, that an option to makeshift a non metal piece to replace that metal. Or is that a part of the magnetic sensor? If that one part could be 3D printed out of a solid material such as carbon fiber, would that work? I'm going to guess the magnetic sensor explains the reason of such a high end device having plastic gears, or I guess they are all nylon. It just seems like there has got to be a work-a-round to this problem...
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
+Brenden John The hub is made up as 2 pieces. The top piece being the actual hub that drives the cassette reels. The bottom half of the assembly is the plastic ring gear that is mounted on a thin metal disc. The metal disk (it is steel) serves another purpose. Remember I said the tape hub was a 2 piece assembly, with the top part of it having the actual splines that mesh with the cassette reels. Well the bottom of that plastic hub has a donut magnet on it. The magnet is attracted to the steel disk that the ring gear is moulded. This provides a magnetic clutch to limit torque on the tape. This is much more gentle on the tape than previous felt pad slip clutches. Watch it at 16:20 and you will see it. Below the disk hub assembly is a hall effect device that detects the changing magnetic force going through the metal disk on the gear assembly to detect of the hub is turning or not.

Neil Robinson What the crappy parts that are no longer available. Yes I agree.This was a common thing, and for that matter still is. Manufactures really don't want to supply parts. For years there was the 7 year rule, which was enforced by the US and Canadian governments that forced the manufactures to have parts readily available for 7 years after the product went out of production. Then they relaxed the rules to 6, but worded it that the manufactures should make a reasonable number of spare parts that would cover failures after the product went out of production for 6 years.Of course the loop hole there was make 100 spare parts, and that should be enough to last 6 years because that part should never fail, so at the end of 6 years there should still be spares in stock. That might work for some reliable parts, but when you get a common part that starts failing at say 4 or 5 years out the supply gets used up, and they are under no obligation to make any more.The old system if they ran out of a common part in year 6, they were expected to make more to cover the 7 year. Prior to that it was 10 years.Today they are not required to maintain an inventory of parts, all they have to do is cover the iten while it is under warranty, and if there is one sitting in a store for 5 years unsold, and then it is sold the warranty starts on the sale date. If it breaks, and there is no parts they just replace it with a new model. For some that sounds like a better option. That is unless you are dealing with "vintage" gear, where they no longer make compatible replacements.Of course I am talking video recorders and cameras. People have old tapes they want to play, family stuff and when they go to play it, the camera or VTR is broken. A trip to the local electronics store reveals that all those tape based systems are gone, and slick the salesman is itching to sell the latest SD based camera. Not being able to get parts to repair the old unit just rubs salt into an already open wound.
