This video is your guide and tutorial on using the Rode Wireless Go II on the Sony FX3 XLR Audio Handle. The Wireless Go 2 is a 2 Transmitter+1 Receiver Wireless Audio kit with built in Microphones, the option to connect your own mic, and 7 hours of Internal Recording...all in these tiny little boxes! Rode did an amazing job with these mics, and I am blown away by all the customization you can do with the Rode Central App. I'm going to go over all of that and build upon my last video about the FX3 XLR audio handle, so sit back, enjoy, and hit that like button if you learned something. Thanks guys!

Great video. I learnt a few new things on this. The only thing that i think you mixed up was when you are using the 3.5 to xlr Xlr is a mono port so when you use that adaptor you are combining the wireless go mic’s and they will be on both channels. Best port to use would be 3/4 then channels are split If you want control of both channels then you would want to split your 3.5 out of receiver with a y cable and put one in ch 1 and the other in ch 2. This how i run mine and then my video ntg into 3/4

Thank You , Another Clearly explained video. I see you must teach your Actors / correspondents well. I'm a sound man so I record the best WAV sound in my mixer. I use channel 3/4 for timecode from my Tentacle Syncs. Then I use the Rode Wireless Go 2 as a 2 channel link from my mixer, to the inputs 1 and 2 on the Sony Audio Handle to the XLR inputs. I found an unbalanced 3.5mm jack that splits the channels to the Left / right XLR's. Now the editor has broadcast quality audio on channels 1and 2, and a time code on channel 3 that Premier or Avid can find, for syncing my bag audio if it's needed. Maybe you can do a video showing this setup that i use for News / documentaries . This gives my camera person the freedom to move with out being tied to a soundman.

Great tutorial. One question. I’ve been trying to figure this out. Do we need to use the Rode XLR to 3.5 mm adapter or will any adapter do? I have some generic xlr rk 3.5mm jack adapter which I connect to XLR port 1. My Rode wireless go is not detected on channel 1 of the XLR handle.

Hi Ray, you teach me a lot with this, thanks a lot. When I manually adjust the levels of my sony shotgun mic on the fx3 connected on input 1, I can only ear it on my left headphone if I lower the level. if I increase it then the sound goes on my right Side of the headphones but when on auto I can ear the sound on both left and right sides of the headphones at the same time…

Hey Luca. Thanks. What do you have your Input Selector on the back of the handle set to? Did you see the part where I was talking about enabling a Your own safety track with the Input Selector? You can make your Input1 shotgun mic go to Ch1 and CH2. Or just Ch1. Also, check your headphone settings in the Menu. You can specify which channels you prefer to hear in Each ear. This is helpful for lots of Inputs, or if you only want to hear your Lavs and no shotgun mic, etc.

Hey Ray. Awesome channel, your videos have been super helpful over the years. I’ve got a question that’s always bugged me as I can’t figure out the settings. When I’m using the 2 x Rode Wireless mics I have them set in split mode and yet monitoring on the camera I’m hearing a mixed or merged audio. I’m not hearing 1 mic’s audio in say the left ear and the other mic in the right. Also when I import and seperate the tracks in Da Vinci it only has a merged recording. Wondering if you’ve run into this problem? Or do you just take the individual recordings from the onboard memory on the Rode TXs?
@RayValencia
@RayValencia Ай бұрын
Thanks onasht. I appreciate that! If you use the 3.5mm jack (Input 3) it will separate the mics on 3/4 (if you have your Rode set to sep. outputs). If you want to use the 2 XLR ports, I ended up using a Comica 3.5mm to XLR channel splitter: geni.us/Comica_XLRsplitter Then you can adjust the headphone settings in your camera to play on your left/right ear. Hope this helps. I just got the Rode Wireless PRO yesterday, so I'll be visiting this topic very soon.

The xlr adapter eliminates the stereo feature of the rode cuz it merges the 2 signals from L and R to mono on the record. You didn’t mention this, do you know about it or have found a solution? I‘m looking for a solution for month… I have the fx6 and fx9 and they both have no 3.5mm aux.

Hello, I want to ask that I am FX3. I connected the RODE Wireless GO II to the XLR of the FX3 handle, and found that it can only receive the sound from mic1, but there is no sound from mic2. Is it because of the XLR? It is still necessary to use a 3.5 to double XLR, and connect the two XLRs to the handle respectively to solve this problem??

Thanks for the great info! My middle school is looking to getting into video production program using FX3 (well I'm suggesting we purchase/invest in the FX3). I was looking for Audio options. These RODE GO II seem really great for students to use for "on location" interviews at sports & school events and maybe "in the studio" work. How do these mics compared to other lavaliers you've used? Do you recommend a secondary hand held voice recorder for interviews or a boom mic to get better audio quality recordings? Or do you think these GO II's are enough? My school has funding for equipment and I'm helping to figure out some quality gear that would last for reasonable cost. Thanks in advance!
@RayValencia
@RayValencia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Xuong! I think the Rode Go II system would be excellent for interviews for sports and school events. They are so small and (relatively) easy to use compared to other systems. The range on them is really good and the connection between RX and TX is improved over the original GO. I do recommend getting the Rode Lavalier GO for them to avoid having to clip the TX on people collars. It's a little distracting and often times makes t-shirt collars sag or flip over. Of course, XLR mics will give you better quality if you want to take advantage of the FX3 XLR inputs, but that will bump up your costs as well. I think these mics will serve your purposes VERY WELL. I use them ALL the time. I just ordered the Rode NTG5 (XLR mic) and it should be arriving this weekend. I'll post some videos using that Mic on the FX3 as well. I look forward to hearing about your experiences in the future with this set up.

Hi Ray, I've got a question, use rode wireless go II with LAV GO from Rode by VXLR+ connector and it's so noisy like fan or something in the background. Do you have any problems with LAV mic plugged to FX3 in my case FX3/FX6 same issue? Love to hear your feedback!
@RayValencia
@RayValencia 2 жыл бұрын
No, I don't have any issues with noise, but that VXLR+ adapter could be the problem. That is a Phantom Power down-converter. The Rode VXLR adapter I show in this video is simply an adapter, it doesn't do anything with the power. geni.us/RodeVXLRadapter Just make sure you aren't outputting Phantom power to any mics other than Condenser mics (that require it).

Hi! Great question. I may make a video answering this question, so thanks for the idea. I'm rocking the Rode NTG5, short shotgun mic $500, and I have an even shorter shotgun Mic from Deity called the S-Mic 2S for like $300 (The 2S is the Shorter model, the 2 is their regular length mic). But all of those mics are also Water and Moisture Resistant so that would be perfect for your outdoor shoots.

Great review. For two person trade show indoor interviews from 5-10 feet away from the camera, which do you feel is better -the rode wireless mics or the k3m in picking up two voices with my Sony Zv-e10? I travel alot pre pandemic so portability and speed is key. I have a Saramonic Blink but it is USB c and the usb c doesn't appear to work with the zv e10 for some reason. So I'm looking at options. I do like the quality of an XLR mic but dunno if juice is worth the squeeze. The shoe on the Zv-e10 is compatible with the k3m.
@RayValencia
@RayValencia 2 жыл бұрын
For 10 feet away, I would probably opt to use the Wireless Go2. The shotgun mics are great for boom mics overhead, especially for 1 person talking head interview, or run and gun documentary style /// but if you have 2 people talking, and they are turning their heads to each other and back to the camera, their volume will dip down. Wireless Lavs on each person would be ideal for the cleanest audio. The XLR mic would be your best bet if speed is your absolute priority because you don't have to mic anyone up. But once your talent starts getting 10 feet away or so, and you start boosting your gain on the K3M it will pick up more noise than you probably want.

You know...I run into some syncing issues in Premiere sometimes too, especially If I have 4 channels enabled and I only utilize 2 of the channels. I have to manually Delete Ch3 and 4, and then synchronize after that. Not sure if this helps, but maybe someone else will jump in on here that uses PluralEyes. I wouldn't think the 24bit would affect it....but it is very possible.

Your videos are amazingly helpful. Thank for this. I just bough the DJI Mic kit and I wanted to connect it to the FX3 using the XLR input, but if I understood well, by doing so, I loose the ability to separate the 2 mics on different channels, right? When you connect the receiver to the 3.5mm jack, it does separate both channels onto channel 3 and 4 but the control panel of input 3 doesn't allow to set the gain of each channel separately (neither does it have low cut and att controls).. So is there a way to get into the FX3 via XLR and have both mics on separate tracks? (1 and 2 I guess...) Maybe does it require a splitting cable? to get into Input 1 and Input 2? Thanks in advance! As an Fx3 shooter, you channel is invaluable

@@RayValencia Congrats on the show. It's pretty amazing to see that high end professional shows are made using such accessible gear like the Rode Wireless GO2.. I'm also used to use a pair of AVX for sound as it's pretty much the quickest and safest option when you're a solo shooter and dont wanna add too much stress and workload.. (I loved the small size of the receivers.. until I saw DJI one.. haha)... but they tend to drop signal quite easily and the neat form factor + internal recording of DJI's mic really attracted me. I tested out today, connecting to the 3.5mm jack of the 3rd input of the FX3. Still need to download the footage and check how it all went. Did internal recording + safety track as I was only using one mic. Battery died after 6hours.. like 10 min before wrap.. the non-exrtable battery is definitely going to be an issue, specially as the product will age and battery health will decrease.. seems like its not a very sustainable product in any sense of the term... For the rest, it was a breeze to use on set.

Hi Ray, I have the same setup but on a Sony A7R4. When i connect the receiver via the xlr adapter on channel 1 the two transmitters are automatically merged to mono (while the display on the receiver shows separate channels). I'm still looking to a way have two separate (editable) channels in camera. I know I can use the backup recordings, but it would be lovely to have it direct in camera. Any thoughts?
@RayValencia
@RayValencia 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brante & Immink. I believe this is a limitation of XLR...and the RODE's output. The adapter is converting it to a single channel. The only thing I can think of trying is to have a 3.5mm to XLR splitter, and if that doesn't work...that means Rode's output isn't capable of splitting the signals into Left and Right XLR. I'll see if I can borrow one of those cables and give it a try for you!

Ray, to clarify my previous comment, if you want to use the DJI Mic (or Rode Go II, which is the same concept) and connect the receiver to the XLR input, instead of Input 3 (3.5mm), could you use a Stereo female to dual mono male cable? The 3.5mm jack coming out of the dual receiver would be splitter into two separate male jacks that you could plug into XLR adapters. Would that allow to get to separate signals on channel 1 and 2, with the benefit of having a full control over gain, Att and low cut via the butons on the XLR module of the FX3? What do think? Thanks!

If you plug the Tentacle into the 3.5mm on the handle, it will take over Ch 3-4. So I would probably put on an Input that you don't need, most likely IN2. Then get an XLR to 3.5mm adapter (like the one I used in the video), and Put the Input Selector on IN1-IN2.

Hi Ray, Love your videos and have taught me a bunch. I am running into a very odd issue with my FX3 and the Rode NTG5 (XLR). If I set the menu in camera (shoe audio set) to 24Bit 4/Ch i am getting a clean feed and I can hear playback in camera but only static when I download my files. I've tried with a card reader and also directly camera to computer. This is also happening with the Rode video mic pro set to input 3 (3.5" connecter). Same with 24Bit 2/ch but if I set the menu to 16Bit 2/ch no problem. If I got audio out through HDMI to an atomos recorder I don't have the problem. I can open the files in catalyst brown and there is no PCM codec written to the audio. Very strange. Any suggestions on something I should check.

Hi Lorenzo. Thank you so much for reaching out. I also have the RODE NTG5 and the VideoMic Pro+ and I haven't been able to replicate your issue. Just wondering What codec are filming in and if your computer can handle it? Like are you shooting in XAVC-HS? Which is an H.265 file. Or All-I? Although, this may not be camera/mic related at all. If it is playing back fine in camera, you are GOOD! Rest assured your audio can be saved. I think this could be computer related or Video Editor related. I've heard some Macs were having issues playing these files. Make sure you're on the latest firmware of your video editor too. Also, my VLC player bugs out when I open these files and doesn't play them at all. Have your tried opening these files with Sony Catalyst Browse? (Get it Free from Sony). Adobe Premiere also has no issues opening on my PC either. I always keep my FX3 4 channels enabled, even when I'm only using 2 channels, and I just delete the 2 extra blank tracks when I'm editing. Doesn't bother me at all keeping it on 4ch all the time. Hit me back and let me know what you find out.

@@RayValencia Hi Ray. Thank you so much for your thorough response to my issue. After days and days of testing and ripping out what I have left of my hair I finally figured out the issue. I had been using an older version of catalyst browse on my Mac (OS 13.3.6). I had trouble with the more recent version that kept crashing on startup. I was almost ready to send the camera in to be checked and I said. Let me run one more test. Let me load catalyst on my laptop. The newest version loaded with no problem which raised my brow. I ran the test file through it and no problem. That’s when I knew it had to be a computer not camera problem. I had tried connecting the camera straight to the computer to see if it was a card related issue in earlier tests but same problem. I tried loading the latest version of catalyst on my Mac and this time the launch didn’t crash. No idea why it worked this time and not last (fun with computers) I reran the test and this time it all worked. I couldn’t believe I finally isolated the issue. I still have to transcode the files to import to premier but tested that and no issues as of now. The crazy thing is if I have the camera connected to my atomos flame recording onto ssd no add card. I never had the problem with the older version of catalyst. I wonder if I can import straight into premiere now without transcoding. I’ll test that next. I wasn’t able to import straight into premiere. It would only have a video no audio file when I had the issue. Keep doing great explainer videos. Your videos have been INVALUABLE to my learning.

I LOVE your videos and have subscribed. However, I am still so confused about how the input select works. So, I have a phantom powered shotgun mic on at all times. Then I want to add the wireless go 2's to the Input there, where should the input selector be? Then if I go with the XLR adapter, I then have the shotgun in input 1, and the wireless go's into input 2, where should the input selector be? I'm confused, obviosuly, haha.
@RayValencia
@RayValencia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi!! First, thank you! Ok, so the Input Selector on the back tells your camera what is supposed to be on Channels 1 and 2. When it's on IN1, then Input 1 is on both Channels 1-2 (which is how you're able to enable a "Safety Track" aka a lower decibel channel on Ch2). It basically duplicates In1 on both Ch1 and 2. Now, when it's on IN1-IN2 you are telling your camera that you have something in IN1 that will be on Ch 1, and IN2 will be on CH2. When it's on IN3, then it's telling your camera to put your 3.5mm Jack on Ch1-2. So if you have 48v phantom powered mic in IN1, and Wireless GO into IN2, then the only place it can really go is on Ch2 by itself, or plug it into IN3 and have it split the 2 transmitters on CH3-4.

At 4:48, you show the 3.5 stereo into the VXLR adapter, then put the switch on the back of the handle to input 1. I'm wondering about the next part where you're adjusting audio levels using both dials. You say the dial for input 1 is changing the level for mic1/left and dial 2 is changing for mic2/right. In my experience, it's mixing both mics down to a single input, but the dials let you change that mixed signal to record at different levels (not separate). The VXLR adapter is not giving me the ability to control left/mic1 with dial 1 and right/mic2 with dial 2 separately. It's letting me record the same mixed audio on left/right at different levels. Is there a setting I am overlooking or did I misunderstand what you were saying in the video? Thanks for your time, especially to reply to a comment on an old video.
@RayValencia
@RayValencia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim!! No, you are totally correct!!! I see what you mean about how the video looks like you can separate the Rode mics with that adapter.... so what I was trying to say was that with that adapter, you can have finer tuning of your Rode GO mic (AND your shotgun mic). But if you are using 2 GOII mics, then the 3.5mm jack on the Handle is still better than the one on the FX3 body because you have the additional PreAmps and dials. Although, I posted a video today of a QUAD Wireless microphone system from Comica that you can actually separate all 4 MICS into 4 different channels on the FX3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXrWc5Wlrpucars

Hi, I am having a tech issue hopefully you can help me, I am trying to connect my rode wireless go ii to my fx3 sound bar (just got this camera). I can’t seem to hear anything out of the headphone’s when trying to monitor the sound. I have it connected to input 1 via the sound bar and the headphone into the 3.5 Jack, but no sound is coming out of the headphones. It shows that it is picking up sounds, but i can’t hear anything. I tried it on my a7siii and it works fine, so I don’t think it’s the rode, can you tell me what I am missing? Thanks!

I have both and there is a lot of interference and noise when placing the transmitter right into the camera. Did you have this issue at all? There’s a Facebook group, multiple Reddit groups all talking about this issue but I’m assuming you didn’t have this problem.

Hey Sean. I've been contacted by numerous people about this issue after I made this video. Although, my FX3 doesn't have any problems whatsoever. I don't know if it's because I pre-ordered the camera and got an early copy, or they changed something down the road, but mine works amazing with Rode Wireless Go version I and 2, and the Deity Pocket Wireless mic has no issues in the Body Mic Jack either. I still use the internal mic jack for all my latest videos with wireless mics and still working great. Sorry to hear about your issue and I hope some firmware updates can fix it!

It's wireless in the way where you can monitor the wireless receivers through the camera's headphones jack (like while on a gimbal). You can even select which mics you have coming into each ear, like if you are using all 4 channels.

They say it works with other cameras, but not with their FX3 internal mic jack. Some people have talked to Rode directly, and others have talked to Sony. Sony says it's Rode, third party accessory problem. Rode admittedly knows this issues with this specific camera ans have replaced some people's kits.
