Hey Mark!!! What budget APSC lens will you recommend for head on talking videos. Should I go with 55MM OR 35 MM. If so, which company's lens you would recommend as there are tons of budget lens are available right now like Meiki, Ynling, TT artisans and others. I bought the Zeiss 55mm F1.8 like 8 years ago for my A7II. It's a great lens and I used it a ton as my walkabout lens thanks to it's small size and weight. But if I were buying a lens today, I couldn't justify the price. I could buy 2 cheaper lenses for 1 Zeis 55.

Mark, this lens is amazing. I got it for my Sony ZV E1. I got some gorgeous portraits and videos. It replaced a Sigma Art 24-70 and I couldn't be happier with the change. The Sigma was clinical and hit and miss, whereas the Meike Pro is almost always a hit. I'm a hybrid shooter too.

I also think a head to head with the 55mm Zeiss 1.8 is more appropriate, also because I believe this video should help those who don't possess any of those lenses yet. I have the 55 Zeiss and I don't think anything would make me get the Meike over the 55 Zeiss which is still considered one of the best prime lenses out there. If the Meike keeps up with the Zeiss, and you are on a budget could make sense to go for it.

@@johnadams3038 I'm curious to find out because I have the Zeiss. If this lens is cheaper, I'd sell it and swap. Have recently purchased the Viltrox 20/2.8, 28/4.5, 40/2.5, and the TT Artisan 75/2 and have been generally happy with them. They definitely do not focus as well as my Sony f1.8 primes, especially in low light, but the IQ overall is good. Not letting my Sony primes go just yet, but happy to have these low-cost alternatives.

The best e-mount 55mm lens is the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8. So much 3d pop and character. That would have been the comparison to make rather than the terrible Sony 50mm. Only photographers want clinical brick sharp lenses.

I just got that one, and the Mark-recommended FE 35mm 1.8. The Zeiss 55 is very good - but holy cow, is the 35 incredibly sharp and 3D. Plus, the Zeiss shows its age with slower and less responsive autofocusing.

yes, you can use it on the zv-e10ii. but I would recommend the Meike 55 1.4 Apsc lens or the Viltrox 56 1.7 for the zv-e10ii. smaller, lighter, cheaper, brighter.

Hey Mark, sorry for the random question. I found the Sony 24-105 F4 G OSS and the Tamron 28-75mm G2 for €550 and I'm considering getting one of them. I mainly shoot cinematic videos for projects and don't shoot a lot of photos. The extra zoom range of the Sony and the OSS look very nice for video but the fact that the Tamron is f2.8 in comparison to the f4 of the Sony is also a big thing to consider for the depth of field and low light capabilities. I shoot on the Sony a7C btw :) I'm still pretty young and need one lens that I can use for 'everything'. Can you maybe help me a bit and share some advice? Thanks in advance!

Most people are really happy to have the 2.8 instead of f4 - myself included. Both great lenses, but you'll notice a big difference with the extra light and depth of field when needed. The OSS won't do a ton in video and the a7c doesn't have great stabilization, so with either lens, you'll likely need a gimbal, tripod or catalyst browse for stable footage.

That micro AF hunting on fence in focus breathing test does not look great, not sure how you could overlook that. In general - those 3rd party lenses are optically better that Sony counterparts for similar price and AF reliability in photo and especially in video mode makes the biggest diference between them. It would great if AF would be tested more carefully (sorry, but smilling in video test at the end is useless, at least moving forward and backward would give us some overview about AF in video). Also, this lens should be compared with Sony 55 1.8 as used one can be buy (at least in my country) for similar price as this new Meike. I own Sony 55 1.8 but considering this Meike because of quite high CA on Sony and maybe bit high swirly bokeh... but depends how AF will work comparing to Meike... But nice review overall...

the fence is flat so all of the lenses even the GM hunt a tiny bit. autofocus is flawless, video autofocus is nothing for the new breed of stepping motors Meike, Viltrox and TTArtisan - to just depends on you camera because all these new lenses can keep up. But if you have the Sony 55 - I don’t see why you would change. I’ll try to get it in and do a head to head. where the expensive Sony lenses will do better is with tracking autofocus in photos with fast moving subjects.

To me, the whole point of an f/1.8 is a super compact size. This thing looks huge compared to the OG Sony/Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, and it looks about as big as the recent Sony 50mm f/1.4 GM. Yes, of course, I am well aware of the price difference, so I get that it is a great value. But since your focus is on quality, especially on a body as expensive as the A7 RV, I would go for the GM.

With any lens on APSC - multiply focal length by 1.5x. So this would be a 82.5mm. In your case I would look at the Viltrox 55mm f1.7 or the meike 55 1.4 for portraits (the same math applies - they will be around 82.5mm full frame equivalent

Sony 15 1.4 is good for a fairly wide field of view. A lot of landscape photographers prefer wide like the Sony 11 1.8 APSC. A great option is the sigma 10-18 f2.8 for landscapers

Love your channel Mark, thank you. But Adorama is one of the worst places to buy gear from, at least here in the states. Everything I've gotten from them has either been broken when it arrives (esp used gear) or packaged without filler in a big empty box (meaning a delicate piece of gear was banged about during shipping). QC is sorely lacking there, and customer service is almost as bad. I don't love Amazon either, but it's the lessor of two evils. I’m a new KZbinr creating travel vlogs and targeting foreign country for my language. I recently purchased an A6700 and a ZV-E10 II camera, but I’m considering returning one of them. I also have an 11mm f/1.8 lens. I’m concerned about the ZV-E10 II’s video quality. Sometimes, the video appears shaky, even after using the sony catalog browser and stabilization settings. The issue seems to be with the video itself, rather than the stabilization. Additionally, the A6700 is quite heavy, which makes it inconvenient for travel. I’ve watched your comparison video, and I’d appreciate your advice on which camera I should keep. I am very confuse.

My two cents is the calculus on the value proposition for the 50 f/1.8 pro from Meike against the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8z (s-line) just won't make as much sense due to as you state in the video, lack of profile support in your editors. The bang for the buck just won't be that much against what you can get especially factoring in from the used market. However, I see that Meike has a 85mm Pro, now there is a much wider gap in cost against the Nikkor 85mm F1.8z. That 85mm Pro Meike then looks much more tempting.

I have made it a point to never buy first-party lenses new because the prices are simply insane. I say hooray to third-party lenses and to the very active used market. I have a fair number of third-party lenses from the old favorites Sigma and Tamron, and also from Samyang, TTAritsan, 7Artisans, Soligor, and even Vivitar. They all work just fine for my use cases. When I get a sense I need a another lens, I always check out the "off" brands.

Problem either this review is that the lenses were supplied by the manufacturer who of course supply only cherry picked samples. An honest review would use samples picked at random from a store. In the past, we had glowing reviews of Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lenses that appeared to outperform similar lenses from Nikon and Canon which were 3-4X the price. People found out that you needed to buy 4-5 Samyang lenses to find one good one. Due to their cheap construction most of their lenses had many decentered lens elements.

That is a 12 year old lens - and I still can't find it anywhere near the price of the Meike. Bandh stills has it selling for $1000 and on the used market the best I can see is about $500 for a copy in decent condition.

The Meike 55/1.8 at €359,- is almost twice the price of the Sony 50/1.8 at €194,-. Why not compare it to the Sony/Zeiss 55/1.8? It is a more comparable lens imho.

Many many people buy this lens - one of the best sellers for Sony still because people see they can get a Sony lens at the price. You might know the lens is not up to today’s standards - but many people don’t. Wouldn’t it be nice if people like that could know that there is a much better option at the same price?
