This is an APSC lens you said. Does it mean I can only use it on Canon RF APSC? How will it behave on my R6m2? Will the camera go into crop mode? If yes, what would the megapixels be and I'm afraid the vinyetting would become worse. A penny for your thoughts ..
@markwiemels

@@marknongkhlaw1674 Yes, you can use it in crop mode, but it's only 9.1MP then. You could also shoot in Full Frame mode then crop in editing, and probably get a few more MP out of it, but I don't know exactly how many.

Sorry I’m going to geek out a bit… 50mm is not the true “normal” focal length for full frame. The mathematical normal is defined as the diagonal measurement of the sensor (or negative). Full frame is 36mm x 24mm. So if you use Pythagorean theory the normal focal length would be 43mm. Using the same math, the normal lens for APS-C is 28mm. For 6x6cm it is 85mm. But most manufacturers supplied either 80mm or 90mm on those cameras. On a side note, the APS-C sensor is the same size of the negative from what used to be called “half frame” 35mm film. That’s why the crop factor for APS-C is 1.5.

it was gifted to me by my sister as a birthday present. I first underrated this lens since it was manual focus (and it was quite on the heavier side) . But then after a little bit of searching an learning, I am starting to look at this lens at a different way. It made me more creative from time to time and when my buddies hang around me they get shocked at how wide this lens can capture, I am really thankful to my sister that she made me experience such a great lens.

For nearly all of my work, and I am an Obsessive/Compulsive, I use a 10 to 24 and a 24 to 70. When I'm in a City, I go with my 10 to 24 . If I am careful about holding the camera parallel to the horizon, there is very little distortion. If I tilt it up or down, I can emphasize the patterns on tiled or marble plazas (like the one's I'm seeing in Budapest today) or emphasize the monumentality of the churches and Statuary. I do depend on Autofocus and exposure assistance as, at 75, I don't focus as quickly as I one did

The normal field of view is equivalent to the diagonal of the medium (film, sensor, etc), so 43mm for 35mm SLRs. In the past using SLRs, if you had your right eye to the viewfinder and left eye open, the two images would match. Thanks for the review.

@parshua I always felt that the 35mm (Full Frame) lens seemed closer to the "normal" field of view than the 50mm. The 50mm lens always felt like a crop of what I was seeing with my eyes. While my eyes can see wider than a 35mm lens, it seems like it covers the key part of my vision. I've heard that the 50mm Normal lens was chosen by Leica many years ago and was not really based on any math or science. Since then, everyone has copied what Leica chose.

This lens is really a bargain. Even if you have a full-frame camera and run it in crop mode. The price and size justify throwing it in your bag to have a pretty wide angle in addition to whatever other lens you're using that doesn't go quite as wide. The wider lenses give you the sort of cell-phone "just snap a photo" experience where focusing isn't that hard, and the f/2 gives this a pretty small size. Also having two hood / cap options is a lot of flexibility for a $170 lens. The closest lens I have is the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN ART for full frame and if you were to carry it in the bag just to have an ultra-wide it's a significant amount of extra weight and space (also costs 8x as much).

That's how I see and also use ultra wide lenses, as long as they don't destort, when travelling. You said it correctly, wherever I also go, museums, cities, mountains...there has to be that one or two photos that will "wrap around" the scene and tell a story where I've been to, what place, how big or small was it? Only a ultra wide lens can give you that. Still it's not a lens I'll make tons of pictures with, like you said, it's either to start my moment somewhere, or to have a proper closure before leaving the place :)

16mm on FF is bit of extreme. But I used it often with 16-35 2.8. Speaking about eye FOV. It is 21 mm or 90 degrees. Try 21 mm without O(EVF) just by pointing camera to where you are looking at. You'll see how close it is to what you see. :)

For astrophotography, which is one of the main use of this kinds of super-wide angle fast lens, the poor corner sharpness is really a shame... As it's often needed to stake multiple exposures as the sky rotates in frame, every part of the frames are equaly importent for them to be staked perfectly.

What? This is a manual focus, crop sensor, wide angle lens. Yes, it is fast--on an APS-C camera. If you put it on a full-frame camera, it will vignette terribly and will be, at best f3. Yes, it's cheap for a brand new lens, but I don't see this redefining anything. There is a lot of good, used glass out there that will be better than this. Ultimately, it's only a tool; the photographer still has to do the hard work.
@gillesmatheronpro
@gillesmatheronpro Ай бұрын
No. This f/2 aperture will always be an f/2 (or f:2), no matter the type of sensor you mount it before. Focal length (which is a unit) and aperture (which is not a unit, but the result of a ratio, hence the "/" or ":") are fixed values and they do NOT change with the sensor size. If you've ever attended some cinema or audiovisual school, this belongs to the basics. What changes though is the apparent field of view of the final image, and the resulting depth of field when framing and in the final image. The Laws of Optics, which we owe to Augustin Fresnel (the man who invented that special light focusing lens element) for many, are complicated. But a little effort goes a long way.
@mikegarwood8680
@mikegarwood8680 Ай бұрын
@@gillesmatheronpro I used to think this, however, I have been repeatedly told that since the APS-C "light cone" (iris diameter) is smaller--due to the smaller sensor, that if one takes and mounts an APS-C lens onto a Full Frame body--it will vignette badly (obviously) and that the "overall averaged" light to register on the Full Frame sensor would be about a full stop lower (or some fraction the listed f-stop on the lens). I have shot pictures using this combination (disabling the auto crop) and the central "cone" is exposed, and the light tapers off to black the further one goes from the center. Conversely, a Full Frame lens will only expose the central portion of the light cone, as the iris is larger (I can't remember the math). It is some reciprocal of the sensor sizes in square millimeters. This where your "depth of field" changes, as you describe, since, again, the sensor cannot process the light outside its size/geometry. I am unsure of what the f-stop will do, My instinct would be to say that the light would or should be the value as indicated on the given f-stop, but as above, I've been shown to be incorrect. This is why I stay away from APS-C cameras and lenses.

in general i am a very big fan of TTArtisan and 7Artisan, their lenses are really amazing! But the 10mm... not so much... the distortion is too much for my taste. It's more than useable! But you can definitely see the distortion and with no in camera correction and (as of yet) no correction in LrC it would just be too much work
@markwiemels

I'm wondering if you are talking about perspective distortion, as compared to lens distortion (ie barrel). As this lens has amazingly low distortion, which is basically completely unnoticeable in real world use. If you are talking about how someones head, at the side or corner of frame, looks totally unnatural and stretched, that's perspective distortion, which isn't really correctable and would be a feature of any lens of this focal length, even if it was a 5k lens.

“They’ve given as a lens that performs on par with the first party lens manufacturers and premium 3rd party lens manufacturers for 1/3rd the price.” But with no autofocus or electronics whatsoever for EXIF. So I really don’t think that’s a fair comparison. I think you can say it’s a good deal but doing that without acknowledging the inherent difference in functionality that comes with that up front is disingenuous. I also think it can be deceptively hard to manually focus ultra wide angles because of how small in the frame the area you’re focusing on may be. Still, awesome to see lenses like this at this pricepoint especially for more speciality lenses like something this wide. For me for an wide angle I went with the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 and really love it. Sure it’s more expensive than this but still a steal for what it is.

Helllo Mr. Wiemels. I like this rectilinear lens a lot, but I can't seem to find an adapter to fit it to my Canon 5D Mkll. Is it not possible?

Mark, would this lens be a good option for photographing live music? I'm currently using the TT Artisan 25mm, Minolta 50mm 1.7, and Konica 135mm 2.8. I'm missing a wide option. Thank you.

Bought one and returned it almost immediately. Could not get my sample to focus beyond 10 feet. My phone has a better wide angle lens and it want close. To be fair, it could easily be a one off problem, but 1st impressions matter. And it's not like I'm a newby to manual focus since I learned to shoot with film and manual focus.

Yes, sounds like a quality control issue. You can adjust this yourself, but shouldn't have too (4 little screws on the side of the focus ring).

OK but again it's an APS-C lens. It is the full frame equivalent of a 15mm or 16 mm in it's field of view. Good for the price though!

It isn't so much field of view, but magnification. A "normal" lens produces an image on the film or sensor that is the same magnification the naked eye sees. ETA: One of the difficulties in discussing photography is that the camera does not see like the human eye. No lens matches our eyes and no result is the same as what our brain perceives. It is easy to think they are equivalent, because some image are close to the composite that is our perception.

Great review Mark. I've been on the hunt for a 10 mm lens specifically, not sure how it would do well in a video setting on a gimbal the lens being manual but it looks like a great photography option.

If you shoot at f4, you can set it up so everything from about 1 meter to infinity is in focus, and it will look really good.

Since i only use UW only occasionally i wanted to replace my Samyang 12mm with this. Maybe i have a bad copy but this is just not useable at F2 at all imo. My Samy is sharper at F2 than this at F8. This is just to bad to keep it. Just not shure if its worth to try annother copy.

I mean, 35mm (crop) and 55mm (full frame) isn't meant to simulate what we see, it's meant to simulate what 1 eye sees, right? We need a much wider fov for full human vision. Also, 35mm is about 60 degrees horizontal FOV, which is our normal FOV, not counting peripheral vision.
@BakedDrLuny
@BakedDrLuny 7 ай бұрын
The full field of view of human vision is very wide, however you're only able to see color in a much more limited field of view (your brain does the rest in post). The fov that has full color and is in sharp focus is somewhere around the equivalent of a 200mm lens on 35mm. Your eyes scan over an area and your brain creates a wide image full of color, holding the relevant details from repeated passes and even inferring details when necessary. Pick up a 135 or 200 for a walk around and compare with a wide lens like this one.
