@@marknongkhlaw1674 Yes, you can use it in crop mode, but it's only 9.1MP then. You could also shoot in Full Frame mode then crop in editing, and probably get a few more MP out of it, but I don't know exactly how many.

Sorry I’m going to geek out a bit… 50mm is not the true “normal” focal length for full frame. The mathematical normal is defined as the diagonal measurement of the sensor (or negative). Full frame is 36mm x 24mm. So if you use Pythagorean theory the normal focal length would be 43mm. Using the same math, the normal lens for APS-C is 28mm. For 6x6cm it is 85mm. But most manufacturers supplied either 80mm or 90mm on those cameras. On a side note, the APS-C sensor is the same size of the negative from what used to be called “half frame” 35mm film. That’s why the crop factor for APS-C is 1.5.

The normal field of view is equivalent to the diagonal of the medium (film, sensor, etc), so 43mm for 35mm SLRs. In the past using SLRs, if you had your right eye to the viewfinder and left eye open, the two images would match. Thanks for the review.

@parshua I always felt that the 35mm (Full Frame) lens seemed closer to the "normal" field of view than the 50mm. The 50mm lens always felt like a crop of what I was seeing with my eyes. While my eyes can see wider than a 35mm lens, it seems like it covers the key part of my vision. I've heard that the 50mm Normal lens was chosen by Leica many years ago and was not really based on any math or science. Since then, everyone has copied what Leica chose.

This lens is really a bargain. Even if you have a full-frame camera and run it in crop mode. The price and size justify throwing it in your bag to have a pretty wide angle in addition to whatever other lens you're using that doesn't go quite as wide. The wider lenses give you the sort of cell-phone "just snap a photo" experience where focusing isn't that hard, and the f/2 gives this a pretty small size. Also having two hood / cap options is a lot of flexibility for a $170 lens. The closest lens I have is the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN ART for full frame and if you were to carry it in the bag just to have an ultra-wide it's a significant amount of extra weight and space (also costs 8x as much).

That's how I see and also use ultra wide lenses, as long as they don't destort, when travelling. You said it correctly, wherever I also go, museums, cities, mountains...there has to be that one or two photos that will "wrap around" the scene and tell a story where I've been to, what place, how big or small was it? Only a ultra wide lens can give you that. Still it's not a lens I'll make tons of pictures with, like you said, it's either to start my moment somewhere, or to have a proper closure before leaving the place :)

For astrophotography, which is one of the main use of this kinds of super-wide angle fast lens, the poor corner sharpness is really a shame... As it's often needed to stake multiple exposures as the sky rotates in frame, every part of the frames are equaly importent for them to be staked perfectly.
