1. Its not film, it's magnetic video tape. 2. It's not that expensive al long as you avoid eBay. Still, good review.

The major flaw with this review, is this isn't even a Hi8 camcorder. It's a Digital8, which doesn't record analog video, and is similar to MiniDV. Also actual Hi8 camcorders are lower priced, and they don't have Firewire. The quality is very similar to S-VHS, which was it's cheaper competitor. Also most Hi8 camcorders have a better image sensor, than Digital8 ones. Since it was a cheap version of MiniDV, that used Hi8 tapes to record on, they were low-end. Hi8 and Digital8 camcorders may look identical on the outside, but that's about it.

@@sharky-mn3tv No, there are a LOT of Digital 8 camcorders with the 1/4" sensor and same 460k pixels of the Hi8 camcorders and other models even with 800k pixels and looks better. Trust me even with my TRV255E with a 1/6" sensor and 540k pixels (is a PAL version) looks a bit better than some Hi8 camcorders from late 90s with the 1/4" sensor but only recording on a Digital 8 tape, if I record on a Hi8 tape with my camcorder they will look the same as these Hi8 camcorders. The Hi8 and Digital 8 camcorders was not a huge difference in quality (In Digital 8 especially with the 1/4" sensor is better than some Hi8 cameras in low light, even with the 1/6" sensor looks pretty similar, trust me 1/6" and 1/4" sensors looks exactly the same, probably A BIT difference in low quality situation but looks the same if you don´t look at the quality fixedly). I watched A LOT of videos comparing in low light situations Digital 8 camcorders with the 1/4" sensor and the 1/6" sensor and I don´t find they look worse than the Hi8 camcorders with the 1/4" sensor. But trust me the sensor in the major part is a nerd shit and nobody cares about.

@@sharky-mn3tv Yes, the early models of Digital 8 was bad, the 1999-2000 models was worse but starting at 2001 to 2005 the Digital 8 models was more better and finally looking better than some Hi8 cameras

This is not Hi8, it’s Digital8. People looking for Hi8 are after that analog look. Digital8 is the same codec as MiniDV. Please change the title so you don’t confuse more people.

Glad you pointed that out. I do have the Hi8 version of this that my mom found in the basement. Still works perfectly except the the speaker doesn’t work so I’m going to get the cables to transfer these to my Mac. If you have one of these what software can you use to upload the video?

The music sections are loud, almost a bit too loud, and then the speaking sections are really quiet. Kinda surprised you kept the title as Hi8 but I guess it performs better than Digital 8 (which many people have pointed is what this takes). Bought quite a few different models to play around with and in any case it's definitely usually better to get one with steadyshot for people who are new and looking. I'm about to sleep so will come back and view properly tomorrow
