I tried to buy this in Montreal where I live. To my surprise, I was told to wait for the NX-80. I explained to the retailer my inexperience and he immediately informed me the AF was extremely sluggish on this Cam. He quipped that based on my lack of experience would demand that AF should be a priority until I mastered the camera. I appreciated his input, as I did yours. You are clearly an expert that probably never uses AF. Who knows, maybe a NX-200 is on the way in the not too distant future. I've never experienced a salesman practically begging me not to buy a product. He was a pro and owned one himself and like you, had nothing but praise for it otherwise.
@UKAirscape7 жыл бұрын
I have heard that the autofocus on the new NX80 is substantially better than these older models, yes, though I have not been able to test it. As a beginner, it may well be that you like to use AF but at the same time, I have always found autofocuses to not be 100% reliable - after all, they can only guess which bit of the image you want to be in focus. The NX80 is certainly more modern but it doesn't have such an extensive set of manual controls so whether it's right for you depends on what you want to do . I agree, an NX200 with the features of the NX80 in the NX100 body would be great.

Excellent review. 22 minutes of densely packed, extremely valuable and practical information. What is more: delivered to camera logically, faultlessly without a “hum or errrr”, pause or fluff, gee whiz or hiccup. How do you do it? You do not seem to have any idiot prompt cards. Congratulations on a very accomplished and useful piece of work. (your valuable comments on 4K storage and processing requirements are well taken by the way) Many thanks.

Hi, I have finally purchased the HXR NX 100 and I must say: fantastic camera! Thanky ou very much for your review, which helped me a lot to go for it. Two Informations: 1) I have purchased at Sony service the lens-hood for the 4k model PXW-Z150. This hood has the built in mechanic with two lids which close the hood with a pleasant "click" and protect the lens. It fits perfectly to the HXR NX 100, and even an 62mm UV filter attached onto the Lens is not a problem. 2) I do not observe the rainbow efect in the EVF, which you've reported about. Maybe they have fixed it. The picture in the evf is quite small, but ok. The three rings on the objective work perfektly smooth and responsive. I really like the camera. Best regards from Austria!
@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
+Nik Zuhause That tip about the lens hood is excellent! Great idea. As for point 2, I've had several people since say that their camera viewfinders are fine so it must have been a fault or early issue on the test model I was sent (either that or there's something wrong with my eyes, which is also possible!)

@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
Offhand, at that price, I can't think of any. You've got the JVCHM170/200 which I wasn't a huge fan of, there's a Panasonic (not the DVX200, another one whose model number escapes me) and the Sony. Unfortunately I've no idea if they permit 4K monitoring. I presume they tend not to because it requires processor power to create the signal and in the low cost camcorders, the processor is busy doing the encoding and not much else!!

I have to say after watching your review of this camera a few weeks ago, I decided to go to B&H photo to research what other options and features, prices and so on that were out there. That being said, I can't find anything that measures up to this for price, picture quality and such. I asked other buyers on KZbin on their thoughts as well and they all seemed very satisfied. I know, that's exactly what you said in essence in your review. Finally, I believe Sony will sell quite a few of these and have you to thank for it.

Hi, could you please spend some words about: 1) The quality of the image stabiliser of this camera? 2) The zoom speed? Can it make creeping zoom? Does ist start and stop the zoom smoothly? 3) Could you please compare the camera regarding the points above against the PXW 70? 4) Would you recommend it rather the PXW 70 for somebody, who does not need 4K? 5) The view finder is obviously poor, but still: can it be used outside, or would you categorise it as unusable? 6) Is the weight of the camera not too high, when filming without a tripod? 7) what is the "feeling" regarding the body- dose it feel too plasticky, or rather solid? 8) do the buttons have a solid switching point? Thank you very much in advance! Nikola
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
+Nik Zuhause 1. Image stabilisation has two modes, standard and active. Standard is like a basic camcorder. Active is much better but crops the image a fraction. Neither mode is as good as the BOSS system used on Sony's consumer cams, and nothing like a motorised gimbal. 2. You can do a creeping zoom, best if you use a remote LANC controller though. 3. I can't compare against the X70 as I don't have one (I merely borrowed one for review at the time) 4. Can't say. They're different types of unit. The X70 is smaller and easy to take around, it also has things like HD-SDI output as I recall. But it's more expensive. So it depends what you want and what you need. 5. I talked about that in the video. 6. Weight is fine 7. A bit plasticky but not as bad as a JVC GY-HM170 8. Not really

The 'G' in Sony's 'G lenses' stands for 'Gold Standard'. I gleaned that piece of information from one of Sony's lens catalogues here in Japan. I agree with your views on this NX100 and it is a very valid camera as it is. If you have a radio mic stuck on top of that camera and want to close the monitor to use the viewfinder - good luck. Sony would do well to take a leaf out of Panasonic's book and have a monitor that slides in without having to remove any accessory you may have in the shoe. A small gripe that I have about the MI Shoe is that the travel is far too short (rails too short) and I have found that accessories such as lights and wireless receivers tend to pop out in real life situations so you have to clamp them down much harder than usual. I understand that on cameras like the A7 series for example, that there is simply not enough space, but on my FS7 there is ample space and the secondary accessory shoe at the rear is longer!! Please Sony, make the rails a little longer to accommodate non-MI accessories (these lock into place and are no issue).
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
Crumbs, I hadn't even considered the MI accessories getting in the way of the screen shutting; good point! Do the MI accessories not screw onto the shoe to hold them tight, like a normal shoe accessory would? I've never actually tried any.
@andrewjones-productions9 жыл бұрын
The MI accessories are designed to slot in and fit in properly, They are not the issue. The issue arises (and occasionally arises I might add) when you use non-MI accessories which have a square foot that prevents them from being fully inserted. This means that a small portion hangs out at the end. This seems to be enough for the accessory to work loose and suddenly pop out in use. Obviously, tripod use is not an issue, but when running and gunning, it does happen. In my latest news item on 'Shopping in Japan' my Sony wireless (not the latest MI compatible version) came loose and was hanging freely in the crowd as I progressed down the street. In these conditions it is both dangerous to passers by as well as an inconvenience.

For the price, that is a lot of rather good camera. I am still very happy with my FDR-AXP33 and I don't film yet at 4K. I set my camcorder to record 1080 at 50 and it is a stunning picture. 4K is the future and of course there will be even more impressive standards after that but 1080 is good enough for most people right now. I really enjoyed your review (as I always do enjoy your videos). Thanks for introducing me to a new model on the marketplace. All the best.

UKAirscape yeah, It's all mobile stuff. Or it's all about RED cameras, or big expensive rigs now... You should review the Panasonic AG-AC30 if you haven't already done it. For me, budget stuff is great, since I'm still in school, and $2,000+ cameras like the Sony NXR-NX5R are way out of my price range. That's why I love camera like these since it looks professional enough to look like you know what you're doing and maintain professionalism while keeping a lower budget.

Unfortunately, Panasonic have never loaned me any gear so I can only review from them what I buy with my own cash (ouch!) and the AG-AC30 is quite old now so it's not one I'll get. There are lots of reviews of it though; I think mostly positive, given the price.

Hi, regarding the zoom rocker, I believe, it has been said, that it has several speeds? Does the speed vary in dependancy of the pressure force on the rocker (which I would expect)? Is the speed in that case changing gradually in an "analog way" if you increase the pressure or rather abruptly switching between few speeds? If abruptly: how many speeds are provided? What I would prefer, is that you can make a gentle transition from zero to some moderate speed, not like stop-and -go .
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
I didn't test the rocker to that degree of accuracy! As I recall, it was pressure sensitive. I prefer to use a remote controller on the tripod bar and that had the usual degree of sensitivity according to pressure, you could do a creeping zoom or a fast(ish) one.

I just ordered this camera as my first entry into a pro style camera. Between your review and others I have seen a lot of features and demos that answered my questions. One thing I am still wondering about, as I can not find the full user manual on Sony's website - does this camera feature night shot to record in total darkness? The phone rep at B&H said no, the online rep under the awnsered questions part said yes, but another use said no. Do you know anything about this feature being on the camera? I have paranormal groups who are interested in it. Thanks for any replies!

+UKAirscapeThanks for the reply. I saw in another review video what looked like night shot type of function, but it was presented in Japanese, and I couldn't understand it. But this part of the video shows what looks like night shot using the Low Lux button?
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
Ah, I can see how that could be used. The low lux mode, if I recall correctly, puts the camera largely into auto and cranks up the gain astronomically so as to give a picture in terrible light. It's not the same as "nightshot" mode which uses infra red but you might end up with similar results I suppose.
@liberty6109 жыл бұрын
+UKAirscape Thanks for the replies. I'm suppose to be getting the camera tomorrow. I'll be sure to go through it well and test everything out. Thanks again! +UKAirscape Just received my NX100 today, and I can now conform it DOES indeed have inferred night shot on it. You put the camera into full auto mode, and then in the menus, you program the LUX button to activate the night shot mode. So it does indeed include inferred night vision.

I'm not actually sure that it's the exact same sensor but certainly very similar I think. I haven't done a side by side comparison of all three simultaneously so can't really answer the question. I'd just like to add my thanks for the great review. All the sorts of geeky but none-the-less important questions covered. I was saving for the AX53 which does look like a lovely grab and go camcorder. But I just know that I'm going to want manual control. Since I've been thinking more seriously about video production, I can see just how often focusing is used to move the viewer's eye from the front of the scene and back. or just to blur one or the other in order provide a backdrop or foreground frame for the subject. It's used ALL the time! So built in NDs, manual iris and focus control are really important. I'm on a tight budget and this seems to hit the spot. If you know of anything else coming up in the next few months in the £1300ish range which is worth waiting for, let me know! Again, thank you for taking the time to research, film, edit and share your expertise.
@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
The AX53 does have manual focus. It's the exposure that's a bit of a pain. No ND, alas. Do you need 4K or will HD suffice? If shallow DoF is critical to you, a large-sensor DSLR may be more appropriate than a camcorder.
@boxleyroadstudios32868 жыл бұрын
Hi. Shallow DOF is important to me but so's the autofocus performance when that's required. I have a 7D but shooting video on the run is a dreadful experience. 4K isn't a necessity. The AX53 has manual but not at the same time as IRIS. The BOS looks amazing and that's a tempting feature on it's own but the lack of manual control over IRIS and Focus at the same time is a problem. I've got a few months before taking the plunge so will stay tuned to your channel for anything else coming up early in the New Year. Thanks again for the reviews :D
@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
Agreed, almost no small consumer cams have separate controls for focus and exposure although Canon's HF-G40 does (the iris being via a small dial on the side). In fact, this cam would be the compact run-and-gun you need. If you need XLR audio, there's the XA30 which is exactly the same unit but with an audio handle. Neither will do you shallow DoF without a great deal of effort - they've got tiny sensors - but that's what makes them good for ENG style shooting. Stabilisation is decent but not as good as Sony's BOSS (nothing is!)
@DynamixWarePro9 жыл бұрын
The only downside I see to it is that it doesn't record 4:2:2 subsampling (do you know if it outputs uncompressed 4:2:2 via HDMI?) and has a shortish optical zoom and the clear image zoom doesn't always look as good as optical does (Would you be able to show a sample of the clear image zoom?). Also from what you said about the viewfinder, that isn't so good, but it does look like a good prosumer camcorder. From your videos from the camcorder, they look just slightly on the dull side (not bright enough), but not bad quality though. The low light gain looks very good, and defiantly as you said, much better than the XF200. Your right about 4K, especially if your shooting for television as its not necessary yet since many stations still broadcast in SD. I know its good to have 4K on a camera, but its not always necessary to use it. I am getting a Panasonic GH4 soon, which can record up to 4K resolution and although the 4K does look very good, I am going to record in 1920x1080 for now since I have an Atomos Ninja 2 recorder and will be better off using it and getting the 4:2:2 10-bit from HDMI rather than internal 4:2:0 8-bit. Even if the internal 4K would have more pixels than the Ninja 2 video, the Ninja 2 would be better to use as it will give me a better codec, more subsampling, 10-bit color and unrestricted record time, not limited to 29 minutes per video.

@UKAirscape4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I recall this camcorder filming at 60fps, I'd check the specs if I were you. If it does, then it's a decent cam for the price (or was, when I last looked). Depends on what you're filming of course.
@LIRRTV4 жыл бұрын
On the Sony website it says the NTSC model gets up to 60p and 60i...maybe you had the PAL model. I would mainly be filming trains/aircraft, so I would need the higher frame rate. Thanks for the reply!
@UKAirscape4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had the PAL model which does 50i but that is interlaced remember, so it's only equivalent to 25p / 30p. Not that same as 60p (60 complete progressive frames). If your output is to the web, then you need progressive, as you'd have to de-interlace "i" footage.
@LIRRTV4 жыл бұрын
I didn’t think I would be using interlacing anyway, so that shouldn’t be a problem. This is my first time getting an actual video camera, so I want to make sure this is the right one for me. Thanks for helping me through this lol
@UKAirscape4 жыл бұрын
Ah, I beg your pardon, I misread the spec!! Indeed the PAL model does do 50p in HD (and yours, as you say, does true 60p too). For its price, I liked this camcorder but it's certainly "entry level" as far as pro camcorders go. It's got the manual controls you'll want though and a decent image.

Thank you for your video, great insight. I have been thinking of event coverage on my videos and I was wondering if such camcorder would be good? Or should I stick with my DSLR with a lens of low f-stop? Would be nice to get some opinions on the comments. Thank you!
@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
Covering events with a DSLR can be a nightmare because with people moving around (including yourself), trying to get quick, accurate focus can be troublesome due to the DSLR's shallow depth of field. Granted it will look "prettier" but you may have fewer useable shots. For ENG use I would always rather use a camcorder but you'll find many DSLR devotees who would disagree with me. Also, is audio important to you at the events? Any interviews? DSLR audio can be a minefield and end up loading you up with extra kit. The all-in-one nature of a camcorder makes it ultra compact for moving around at events.

Hello, nice review! One question are the active stabilization lets say a 5 axis stabilization? Because at most cameras with active stabilizer the up and down movement its ok but left and right seems that dont stabilize at all. I used yesterday a pxw-x70 and it seemed to stabilize very well left and right movements.

My NX100 goes abruptly between each dB step (9dB, 12dB, 15 dB, etc.). If dB is set on auto and I change the iris, the gain changes smoothly, so I think the camera is able to do that. On an older camera, the Sony Z5 for example, there is an option in the menu for smooth transition between each dB step, but I can't find that option on the NX100. Please help me: How do you smoothly transition between each dB step? Thank you!

Also what's the shallow depth of field like with the large sensor?
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
It's achievable with a bit of zoom and a bit of effort but it's not DSLR like. The lens is only f2.8 at the wide end and then it ramps as you zoom so in one sense you're decreasing DoF by zooming but contradicting that by the lens ramping! I think I had a couple of examples of focus pulling in the video which demonstrate.

Thanks for the review, been looking at this camera for a while now, am going into professional music video production and want to use camcorders and not dlsr, do you think this camera will do a decent music video job or you prefer another one for 2000 euro or less, if you think dlsr is better for music video, which will u advice, thanks
@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
Depends entirely on what you're shooting in the music video. You can't simply say any device is suitable "for music videos" as there are so many things that could encompass. Camcorders are good for ease of use and grabbing shots on the fly; DSLRs are good at making "pretty" shots when you have the time to set them up. It's horses for courses.

Hi There I have a Z1 and have used it now for years with great success as a business youtube camera and presentations of products. I find the zoom, use of tapes and head cleaning a pain. Is this all eliminated and is this camera a better option for me considering the aforementioned?
@UKAirscape6 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness yes; any of the modern solid-state camcorders will not only provide a much easier and more reliable workflow than tapes but the advances in sensor and image processing technology will give you a much better and sharper image, especially in dim conditions. This particular camcorder isn't really the successor to the Z1 but is so much more advanced that it would still be a very substantial upgrade. Something like the Sony HXR-NX5 would be more akin to a modern Z1 for HD work, and a PXW-Z190 the same for 4K work. Having said all that, I'm not sure what you mean about the zoom being a pain....?
@TheBigbopster6 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for the reply. I looked at a HXR-NX3 but it does not record in PAL I am led to understand. Does the HXR-NX5 record in PAL. Secondly is this important? I'm not sure I get the whole NTSC-PAL scenario here in OZ in respect to filming, editing on the PC with Premiere Pro and putting my vids on KZbin. I have no real need to put anything I do on DVD and if I did what's the problem. cheers and I appreciate your time
@UKAirscape6 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure there is a PAL version of the NX3, we certainly have one here in the UK as far as I recall! If your videos are solely for KZbin or other computer use then the PAL/NTSC issue is utterly irrelevant UNLESS you plan to mix footage from different sources in which case you probably want them all to match. Otherwise you end up having to re-format one set of footage to the other set's framerate. In other words, if you shoot some at 25fps (pal) and other at 29.97 (ntsc), then your final timeline will have to be rendered at one or the other and the footage shot at whichever rate you don't choose will end up being re-encoded at the chosen frame rate which can look jerky.

Many thanks for this and all your videos from this and your other channels. Nice to have someone actually have a non-bias "REVIEW" of something, rather than just say "it's crap don't buy it" or "if you don't buy this you're an idiot". Also, no distracting music, effects or the new "alternate angle" shot of seeing the host talking to the camera. I'm sorry, but if someone is talking to me I want to see their face, not the back of their head. If someone is going to spend any money on anything, they need as much info that they can get. No distractions. These videos have "no BS" and to the point with no "faffing about". Sorry for the mini-rant, but there you go. We purchased an HXR-MC88 (yes, not 4K) for our church webcasts primarily for use on an bescor MP101 remote head. If it is still available when we can afford another camera, I think the NX100 would be a great fit for handheld or tripod use to match along with. We picked the MC88 over the consumer 4K's cams for the full-size HDMI and the prosumer features and firmware. Only thing I don't like about this one is the BNC not being HD-SDI. I guess it was easier to use that instead of having a stereo mini jack for it. Just a lot of wasted space for most people, although there seems to still be a market for SD somewhere.

Another great, honest review, congrats! Aside from the standard outdoors and indoors scenes, I shoot a lot of theater and concerts on stages that are often poorly lit. There are often very bright spotlights together with dimly lit areas of the stage. Those lighting conditions are challenging and require a camcorder with wide dynamic range to be able to balance the exposure and get acceptable white and black levels. Right now I am looking for a camcorder able to capture a Wide Dynamic Range, preferably 4K capable for future proofing. Have you had a chance to test the NX100 for its dynamic range? I would like to compare it with the Sony X70, JVC HM170 and the Canon XA30 (G40 in its just announced prosumer version). Of those four, the X70 and HM170 are 4K capable and would be preferred, if equally capable of capturing WDR. Thanks!
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
I didn't really get a chance to test dynamic range other than in those shots of the boats and the sky. Certainly didn't get to do any formal testing (and I'm not expert enough for those kind of labs tests anyway). Your circumstances are of course the most difficult for any camcorder. I know the Canon G40 / XA30 has a wide dynamic range mode which might help but I've not tried it. I wonder whether you wouldn't be better looking for something that shoots one of the log profiles (and then having to colour grade in editing, which needn't be difficult if you just want to expand the contrast, essentially). That would point you towards Panasonic's DVX200 in the camcorder shape or a GH4R / Sony A7Sii in stills-type. Much more expensive than your preferred options, sadly.

HI, Great review! I do have a Sony HDR-CX900. I've been very happy with it. According to the Sony website, the NX100 and the CX900 basically have the same censor, and pixel resolution. Is it really worth an upgrade as far as video resolution? Thank you.
@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Cifaldi With apologies, I don't understand your question. Since you've confirmed they're the same sensor, there will be no "upgrade as far as video resolution" by buying the NX100. What you're gaining is better physical controls.
@joecifaldi22098 жыл бұрын
Sorry, what I ment was would it be worth getting the NX100 if I already have the CX900, if there would be much of a difference in video quality. It does seem like the NX100 does have more bells and whistles.

This is the 2nd review I've watched about this camcorder. The viewfinder is a concern for me, as both reviews have made mention how bad it is. Have you reviewed or aware of another comparable camcorder without that issue...and is the pricing close? I would be using it for a lot of outdoor shooting that usally turns to dusk, then nightfall (outside events with stage lighting - concerts, other performances)....I looked up the Canon XF200, and too expensive for me at the moment....The Sony PXW X70 is also a tad high - I see only 1 ring on that model...interesting ???
@UKAirscape7 жыл бұрын
The other review may have also been me, on my other channel (Tubeshootermag)! Other commenters have said their units were fine so maybe mine was an early model or something. There's no comparably-priced cam that I know of though Panasonic do have a low cost camcorder but I've not tested their latest version. The XF200 has poor low light performance, a really grainy image. I like the X70 a lot but as you say, it's slightly less ergonomic due to the single ring and it's slightly older now so the NX100 probably has better electronics inside.

Bravo ... i think one of the best review of a camcorder (either good or bad camcorder), you speak very logicaly about everything (specialy for the 4k). We shoot with dslrs (without 4k) and the clients are very happy with the results... I have thoughts to buy this camera for events (school and sports events) but also for weddings.... What is your opinion ... ??? Thank you.
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I think that provided you know what you're doing and therefore what it is you're buying (and what it is not eg massively shallow depth of field) then it would be fine. You might still want your DSLR for wedding "beauty shots" but this would make a fine rolling record of "as it happens" stuff. One potential downside I suppose would be that as the lens is purely servo driven (no manual option as with higher priced camcorders) you can't crash zoom in and out to reframe which can sometimes be useful in live event videography.
@focuspixel11029 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply .. I think for the privileges of a pure camcorder camera (and for this price)I will have to sustain the downside of it (hardly any shallow depth of field, fixed lens and more ..). thanks again.

Two stability modes: standard (not brilliant but OK for holding a wide-angle shot a bit firmer) and active which was much better but crops slightly in on the image. It's not a glidecam or gimbal quality, it's more like a normal camcorder stabiliser.

@UKAirscape8 жыл бұрын
+SuperRtrtrtr With apologies I don't know what "NG documentaries" means (National Geographic??). Indoors interviews I'd generally use a lavalier (tie clip) mic if there's time to attach it. Wireless ones save you the bother of trailing cords (and the interviewee walking off when still attached, only to yank the camera over!). Something like the RodeLink Wireless system could be good, I use one and like it. Hard to plug two of them in though if you want two channels. For a shotgun, I'd look at something like a Rode NTG2 or maybe an Audio Technica AT875R. Make sure you buy a decent windjammer with it, something from Rycote. They're expensive but do a proper job. Cheap ones can be rubbish. They muffle the wind but muffle the sound as well! If you're trying to capture sound from two of you, one mic isn't optimal though you can get away with it if you're careful with placement. Don't just rely on the mic being on top of the camera unless you're right in front of it; mics need to be close to work properly.

More about settings. If you were shooting perhaps a dog competition for a wealthy dog owner that would view the video on a large computer monitor and send out links to friends; what settings would you use? Would you use a tripod or monopod? What type of microphone?
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
+Ralph Bullis With apologies, those are all far too vast questions to be answered in a KZbin comment. And, I don't mean this nastily, but if you're unsure of whether to use a tripod or not or what kind of mic to use, are you sure you have the expertise to be shooting video for wealthy clients? I'll try briefly to answer though: shoot in XAVC-S at 50Mbps. If you're in the arena following the dog around from 2-3 feet away, you'll do it handheld. If you're on the sidelines, then heavens yes you must use a tripod and a hefty, sturdy, professional one at that with a decent fluid head, because you're going to have to use a lot of zoom and be tracking the dog as it moves round. Mic - depends whether you just want to capture the atmosphere of the arena (in which case the inbuilt one will do) or actually do any interviews in which case the answer requires more paragraphs than I've time to put here, really, and more detail about what you want to do.

There is never one single "best" for anything else there'd only ever be one product on the market. Different software works well for different people. So it depends what you like, what you're used to and what you want to do. FCPX is very popular and not too costly. Adobe Premiere is also popular but you have to pay on a monthly subscription. Avid Media Composer would be the choice if you work in broadcast or film (and have deep pockets)

@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
I think if you were commissioned to produce a doc for the BBC they'd want it done on a rather more expensive camera than this, say a PXW-X180 or similar. I recall that its predecessor, the PMW-180 was the first and lowest cost (at £5k ish) camcorder to meet the broadcast spec. That said, were you to present some footage of a "must see" event eg in a news capacity filmed on this camcorder then the rules would go straight out of the window and they'd snap it up. Let's face it, mobile phone footage is OK for news use! Oddly, the whole 50Mbps thing really is a red herring because of the advances in codecs. When it was specified, camcorders were using MPEG-2, and now H.264 achieves comparable results in half the but rate so a 50Mbps XAVC-S recording should easily exceed a 50Mbps MPEG-2 file :-)

For only an additional $300 why would someone buy this over the X70? Personally I was hoping Sony would put the X70 Specs in this form factor. Shrug. Looks Like I am buy the X70... Thanks for the detailed overview! Cheers, Greg

UKAirscape I was sort of hoping you would elaborate on that a bit since you have reviewed both...
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
+Greg Allen There's not much elaboration to be made. The X70 is more compact, 4K-upgradeable and has HD-SDI. The NX100 is cheaper and has more extensive manual controls. Whichever is right for you will depend on your needs and circumstances.

Please help me! I just recorded video for the first time using this video camera and for the life of me, I simply cannot get the footage off of the video camera. - First I attempted to connect the camera directly to my iMac. But everything in the instruction manual shows only how to (view) the footage on my computer screen. (which is useless to me if I can't get it off/out of the video camera. - Then I purchased a flash card reader and sure enough I can see all the folders on the card - and everyone of them display on my computer as ("empty"). I was shocked and began sweating and stressing out! Had I screwed up and not really recorded anything???? - I took the SD card out of the flash card reader, put it back into the video camera, pressed "Thumbnails" and presto!... There is all of the footage I shot. - I can clearly see it on the camera, but I can't get it out of there! - I've done a ton of Google searches and NOBODY explains how to get the stupid footage off of this camera. - There are multiple videos on KZbin explaining the basic operation of this camera and so-called "QuickStart" methods - And still, nobody tells you how to get the stupid footage off of this camera! I've tried calling Sony Tech Support and was transferred 4 times because they kept telling me "we're sorry, that's professional equipment so we have to transfer you to a different department. Once I finally got to the right department, they told me to leave a message and someone would get back to me in 24. hours. That never happened and I'm still here now nearly a week after these incredibly important and time sensitive videos, still trying to get the stupid footage off of this camera. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

What video format did you shoot in? (It makes a difference to how the files are stored on the cards).

Sony's new HXR-NX5R is coming out soon. Is Sony going to loan you one for review?

Don't know. I might drop them an email.

Nice review. I thought Jordan's 3rd worst camera assessment failed to judge it on its merits. Jordan is using an FS7 using gimbals and color grading log files. Probably more that 90% of us need or wish to bother with.

Many modern camcorders do, either so the pictures can be viewed remotely eg on a tablet, or so the camera can be controlled remotely, or so that it can live stream to the internet directly.

I'm so glad YOU did this review as you always manage to give us such comprehensive information without muddling about. I did watch another review which compared the HXR-NX100 to the HDR-CX900 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2aog2mZeJyWla8 and by golly you really cant pick the picture difference on You Tube. The NX100 is AU$600 more and you get 3 manual lens rings, more manual control, dual card slots, Pro Audio, so I suppose it's a pretty good deal. But the PXW-X70 is only another AU$250 more, it has less controls like the CX900 but I assume it has much better pictures. Ah the dilemma of trying to choose which camera next. :-)
@UKAirscape9 жыл бұрын
+Mervyn Jack Thank you! I don't think the picture's particularly better on the X70, they're all much of a muchness. The X70 brings you a much more ergonomic and sensibly thought out camcorder than the CX900, plus pro audio. It also has the 4K (paid) option. The NX100 offers those manual controls. Your needs and experience should make the choice for you ;-) Good luck.
