Good comparison. The Sony is more modern in design and has a bit more finesse than the Panasonic, but then it typically costs about twice as much. If you focus on performance versus price, the Panasonic wins easily as it is equal in quality to the Sony for much less money. I also like the old skool design of the Panny, looks like it landed straight from the 1980s.

I have both radios if you count the ICF19, the battery only version of the 506. Both are excellent radios! I mostly like to AM DX with them daytime and they don’t disappoint. AM DXing at night is more tedious as there are much more signals to sort out and DSP makes that more difficult.

In my experience (long ago), those ball antennas like on the Sony are going to fail over time. What I mean is, there will be a point where it will not be able to be rotated and it may just lay flat. Are any of the external parts metal on either one of these radios? I was hoping for metal dials or something that would last longer than plastic. The price is excellent though on the Panasonic.

I have a doubt on this comparison. Sony I'm afraid is a DSP tuner radio, while Panasonic that you are comparing is 2400D (Analogue). Panasonic 2400DD is a DSP version of the same model It would be fair to compare Apples and Oranges I guess. An ideal comparison would be between Panasonic 2400D vs Sony ICF10

One of the things you missed was the Tuner of each unit, - The Panasonic has a Analogue type tuner which is better when tuning in weak stations And yes I own this model + This unit seems to last Quite a long time on Battery power which is good - Where the Sony is a digital tuner and is better in and near to city where there might be station overlay or cross talk, and I don't know too much about that one, other than nice looking in fashion but kinda bland...

The dealbreaker here is that the Sony stubbornly uses 3 AAs, whereas the Panasonic wisely uses 4 AAs. Here is why: I hate it when any device uses 3 AAs; stores don't sell packs or 3 AAs, they sell packs of 4 AAs. So you use 3 batteries and what are you going to do with the 4th one? Sometimes you can find a pack of 6 AAs, but that's still not ideal. If you use Rechargeable batteries it's even worse. Many chargers do 2 or 4 AAs at a time, but won't charge uneven numbers. If you stick 3 batteries it will charge the first two but not the third. It's a mess. Newer charges can charge individually but you have to be careful to find the chargers that can do that. Still, if your device uses 3 batteries, what are you going to do with the 4th one? the first 3 rechargeables will be wearing out faster. It's ideal for your device to use 1, 2, or 4 AAs, but never 3. That way you can make full use of all your batteries, disposable or rechargeable. So I'd buy this Panasonic radio over the Sony.
@ToolsElectroDIY8 ай бұрын
The advantage of 3 aa or aaa batteries is that you can easily convert the device to use a single 18650 li-ion battery with 3.6v nominal voltage. It could also mean Sony could potentially release a radio that runs on a builtin rechargeable lithium battery.
@kenjifox42648 ай бұрын
@@ToolsElectroDIY hmm… that’s another thing I don’t like: proprietary rechargeable batteries. 10 or 15 years forward and it will be impossible to find replacement. If that’s all your device uses then your device might as well be dead. On the other hand, standard replaceable/rechargeable AA batteries are never going to go out of style. Devices that use them can truly last.
