You know you're a true A-Mount connoisseur when you bring out esoteric stuff like the Angenieux 28-70! Also excited to see that they implemented AF correctly for the 500 Reflex, still perhaps the best compact mirror lens ever made.

That was a lens of my friend, he is the true die hard fans of A-mount, and he even "re-build" the vintage manual lenses over 70 years old on the Minolta AF50/1.4, which make it be able to autofocus on A-mount cameras. Half of the 30 lenses on the table were mine, and I usually kept the SSM/HSM/USD lenses since they are smoother to pull focus. I was a videographer since Sony announced the DSLT-a55 and NEX-VG10 10 years ago, in the past I use the A-mount lenses for my career, and I finally moved all my lenses/camera to E-mount since the a7m3 announced.

@M Tech not exactly, a7III and a7sIII outperform in ergo while compare to my old a99II, more customisable buttons and menu, also more precise in tracking AF. Although the Gen 2 SSM lenses were told to be 4 time faster tracking on the a99II, but a7III with an EA3 adapter can kill it easily in this stage. Releasing a new adapter to let the legendary A-mount lenses to enjoy the latest features on the E-mount system is still a good move for Sony.

@M Tech Add a little leather grip to the a7 series can easily fix the ergo of the grip, I don't think the top LCD is important since the LCD/EVF already showing all information, even I would flip out the LCD for shooting all the time.

markintosh13 AFS is faster on a99II with its dual cross sensor and AF illuminator, especially on the object with low contrast. However, tracking performance on EA5 overtake the former a lot, also more stable and steady when locking on the focus.

@Tom Cass Yes a99II does not have an AF illuminator, and it only matters when you are using center spot and AF-S. For tracking AF the EA5/a7r4 is much faster than a99II, especially with the SSM/USD lenses. If you own much of the SSM/USD lenses like SAL70-400G, SAL70-200G, SAL300F28G, Tamron 150-600G2, that's worth for a try to upgrade your camera to a7m3/a7r4 and the LAEA5.

I bought the LA-EA4 adapter since it does the old screw drive lenses. That should work for SSM lenses as well from what i read. This is also on an a6000.

I've pre-ordered the adapter for my A7R4 and Sigma 500 f/4.5, which has been rendered more or less useless with the LA-EA4, but the optics on that lens are so nice that I can't sell it. I have the Minolta 500 AF f/8 Reflex, 100-300 AF 4.5-5.6, 100-200 AF f/4.5, 70-210 f/4 AF and Sony 16-50 f/2.8 AF lens. Now I have to wait until Nov. 23 for B&H gets a shipment in so I can check them out. I was glad to see that you did test the 500 AF f/8 Reflex.

OUTSTANDING WORK! I would have LOVED to see some skin tones on these old lenses! Even though these old lenses may not have the resolution or color accuracy of newer units I find some of the older lenses have unique color shifts that can be very interesting and creative for unique cases. Get the Tamron 70-180/2.8 instead, or the 35-150/2-2.8, native lenses are much faster in tracking speed, also better in optical quality

Until now, only a7IV, a7rIV, a1 and a6600 support AF with screw driven lenses on the LA-EA5, both a9 and a7III cannot work with AF on that, and I recommend to get an a7IV with AF supports on the screw driven lenses, also a better price than the a1.

Makes me wish I had held onto the Minolta lenses from my time of shooting with a Maxxum 9000... the 85/1.4 seems to work very well, and I'll bet the 100/2, 135/2.8, and 200/2.8 would also. The only lens that doesn't work is the Tamron SP 180 macro !! In your video this lens works well with your sony alpha7R-iv and adaptor. Can you help me understand if there is a solution? Thank you. Hi Joseph Sometimes some batches of the lens cannot compatible with the LAEA adapters, just like my Sigma 50/1.4 Art wasn't supported by the LAEA adapters too, but some ppl said it could, therefore I send the email to ask Sigma for a solution then they arranged a firmware upgrade to me from the local dealer. I'm not sure will Tamron provide such service, or rather the firmware of SP180macro is upgradable, but I think you can give it a try. Thank you, Henry

Nice you did all these Legacy lenses, but no Beercan? The famous/infamous Minolta 70-210mm f/4? And how does the LAE-5 compare in focusing speed to the LAE-4? And is the focusing area still that tiny grid in the center? i don’t expect magic, but it’s be nice to see a big improvement in performance, but even a little would be helpful.

So glad I found this video, I have 19 Sony, Minolta, Tamron and Tokina lenses that I use with my old a900, a850 and a couple of a77's and I thought they would all become manual focus lenses if and when I pick up a Sony mirrorless body and EA-5 adapter. Good to know they will still AF with the LA-EA5 adapter unlike my old Nikon and 3rd party Nikon lenses with Nikon's Z adapter that'll only focus manually! This means I can still pursue bird photography with my Minolta AF 500 f/8 Mirror lens and my Tamron SP 200-500 f/5-6.3 lenses and macro with my Sony 50 f/2.8, 100 f/2.8 and Tamron 180 f/3.5 macro lenses plus I still have AF. Whooooopie! Dude, we have a lot of the same lenses!

Wow, what a great collection! I'm still waiting for when/if updates firmware for this adapter so I can use screw drive on my A7iii. But I'll have to confirm first that all my other adapters will still work, ie, MC-11, Fotdiox, Techart, etc.. have heard rumors firmware update will kill those (kills af).

It can utilize all the OSPDAF focus points from the camera, on a7r4 you can use all 567 points even with screw driver lenses (except 500/8 Reflex is 15 points) .

Fine review as far as it goes. One of the things I want to know as a guy with a lot of A-mount glass and a Sony 99m2 is how the A7RIV and LAEA5 combination is at implementing Real Time tracking and Eye-AF tracking and whether it offers any advantage over the LAEA3/A7RIV combination for those specific functions. Would like to see a demo of how Real time tracking/EyeAF tracking works with A-mount lenses. The EyeAF in my A99m2 does not work well with many of my A-mount lenses.

There is no difference when you using the LAEA3 or LAEA5 with the SSM/SAM lenses. The eye-AF/tracking performance is much better when those A-mount lenses attached on the E-mount cameras equipped with the "Real-time tracking" feature. The only advantage on a99II is single spot AFS and sightly faster AF motor speed.

LAEA5 doesn't do autofocus with A7 3. You need A7 4.

I was under the impression the LA-EA5 didn't work with some of these AF lenses, especially the 500mm mirror lens, because they don't have internal AF motors. Is that not the case?

The smaller screw drive lenses fared reasonably but nowhere near as smoothly as the sony, sigma and even tamron lenses with inbuilt silent motors. Still grateful for the little motor in the LA-EA5. Lovely demonstrations.

I thought I had a bad case of gear acquisition syndrome but I think I’ve just found the world champion. No judgement, I’ve bought hundreds of thousands of pounds worth over the years but I try and pass it off as a business expense. (Maybe some of the kit isn’t absolutely a necessity). Are these your actual kit or stock from a camera store? Just thinking that there is absolutely no way in hell you need multiple primes covering every mm of focal length and 5 zooms for every zoom range. I’d also say looking at how milky the 80-200 is there’s something wrong with it, fungus maybe?

Most of the tele lenses were borrowed from Mr. Shek, and some of the lenses were mine. That was my actual kit since producing video was my career. The 80-200 was a defected copy, a normal copy should be much better than that.

Mainoo smith IMO Minolta 24-85RS is very sticky while tracking, some of the lenses are more easy to lost focus if the object is lack of contrast, it’s more likely to happened on the zoom lenses, or the lenses with long focusing distance.

Got a "Beercan" today for 45 Euro, shipping included. As mentioned earlier, have TZE-01 already. The TZE-01 has to be slightly modified to fit on Nikon Z50... and ultimately the Z50 got passed to my wife while I got an old Nikon Z6. Not really ready to pay extra for the Z6-II, Z6 (and ultimately the Z7 first version) is just fine for me. I tried Nikon Z6 with many lens and adapter combinations, it works wonderfully. Now all I need to test the "Beercan" is the LA-EA5. I see one used on the fee-Bay, maybe more will pop up.

Hello how are you? I don't know if you can help me, but I have a Tamron ld di sp 70-200mm 2.8 sony a-mout lens and I'm trying to use it on an A7III with the LA-EA5 adapter. The autofocus is not working and it displays the message: "Lens, Invalid with this lens". I would like to know if there is any configuration that needs to be done in the camera. Thanks.

Yes it won’t work unless you have a74, a7s3, a7r4, a7r5, a1 and a6600; and it won’t AF in video mode too😢

Interestingly, great to see the later " Sonnar T's " in action. However one notable thing :: my Minolta 80-200 apo HS G ( the white body version) has no foggyness like the one you tested ( in fact behaviour, Sharpness & colour rendering is more like the later Sony 70-200 you tested next ) 🤔

Still no support for the a6400? I have lots of older Sony A-Mount and Minolta AF Lenses. I have the LA-EA4 which works okay, but I do not like the sacrifices inherent with the translucent mirror.

Nikon "F" has longer base distance than Minolta / Sony Alpha, so without optical correction (and loss of image quality) you can't do that. In addition, I am not aware of Minolta AF to Nikon AF adapter (with or without motor) - presumably because it just does not make much sense. Looking at recent releases of Nikon we also can assume, not much will happen with the "F" mount in the future either - it's all about the "Z" mount. A Nikon "Z" to Minolta / Sony Alpha mount adapter is very well possible and is already sold. These adapters are non-AF purely manual adapters and cost ca. $15 or less. Some "better" (not sure, how far "better") manual adapters cost ca. $25. As I wrote it earlier, an interesting way to use the Minolta / Sony Alpha lens (like the "Beercan") in AF mode on Nikon "Z" cameras could be a combination of Techart TZE-01 adapter and the Sony LA-EA5: the Techart TZE-01 transforms a Nikon "Z" camera to a Sony "E" mount camera and the LA-EA5 can be attached to it. In the theory this should work, but the practice could be different, so will test it sooner or later. I do have a Nikon Z6, a TZE-01 and a Minolta "Beercan". I don't have the LA-EA5 yet though. The Nikon Z50 is a challenge to the Techart TZE-01 though, but the adapter can be easily modified to fit it. Because all the involved lens are full-frame, TZE-01 is of course better on the full-frame Nikon bodies, not on the Z50. IMO, Z50 is perfectly serves it's purpose as a good performance small mirrorless within "Z" ecosystem with the Nikon 16-50 and the Nikon 50-250 lens already and all the adapter experiments are better on the Nikon Z full frames. When traveling, my wife is a major packrat - so Nikon Z50 fits her needs better, than a Nikon Z6. At this moment I am stuck in the lock-down. If I don't get the LA-EA5 from the fee-Bay for a reasonable price, after I get the second jab will just travel back home, visit a Sony store back there and try that adapter in the store together with TZE-01, Nikon Z6 and the "Beercan". Here all photography stores are closed ("not necessary items"), you can't even buy men's underwear here during this COVID insanity.

Great video. I have an a99ii with a sony 70-400g2, 2470z2.8 mk1, tamron 15mm f2.8 and laowa 15mm f4 wide macro. Debating an a7r4. Intrigued at how the 15mm tamron would do with the la-ea5. I only use it for astrophotography really so AF performance isn't that important with it, I'm used to manual focusing anyway with my older wide angle samyang manual focus lens.

I doubt image quality would be improved on the a7m4 and LAEA5 without the translucent mirror👍 You can also test with 70400G2 and 2470ZA with the continuous AF speed, it feels like a reborn.

Minolta 50/1.7 and Sigma 10-20 HSM should be fine, the other two I didn't test them so I can't confirm very certainly, but I think they would be work as usual on the LAEA5 and a7IV.

Which sigma lens are you using? If that's a HSM lens, you can buy the cheapest LA-EA1 and it will do the job If that's a non-HSM lens, then you should buy the LA-EA2 which contain the AF motor to operate with the "screw-driver lens"

Thanks for detail test. However, use only the center focus point. LA_EA4 can do the same thing. Would like to know the performance of side focus point and tracking especially the eye/face detection.

Philip Mok I used the center point for selecting the object I want to lock on, however it’s a full screen tracking and you can see the little square locking to the object, even I pan or tilt the camera.
