Sony MDR-XB600 vs. MDR-XB500 Extra Bass headphones review

Still using XB500's in 2018, Unmatched comfort and they still sound amazing 6 years later, I bought mine in early 2012 at best buy in town for $79.

I have both, and from my hearing, the bass from both is good. Only you must turn the volume up more for XB-700 because the drivers are further from ears while for XB-500, the drivers are exactly on the ears, so the bass is better with even lower volume. The XB-700 has better sound stage/separation btw.

Hi Just from a technical point of view the fact that the headphones amplifier cleaned up the sound ,means that the headphones will be great for referencing , maybe DJing and Producing . Most of our mobile audio devices give us very low quality sound when talking about clean sound ,as they will be lacking the processing power that higher end devices give us. wow, I found a brand new unopened MDR-XB600 on ebay today, 2024 for $53.99 but after doing some internet research, i'm glad I didn't buy it because the on-ear design is so weird. thank you for the amazing review video.

Botton line, as an owner of the MDR-XB700 looking for more bass in his pursuit of bassy music, should I pick these up? I thought about the XB500s because people say they are even bassier than tha 700s, but these look nicer. I was actually remaniscing about the headphones Sony had in the 90s that had little vibrating motors in the cups; they came with those waterproof walkmans they had. Real old school but the visceral/tactile feedback really enhances music, imo. Wish they still made them.

I'd suggest getting the 500 if you want a pair of headphones with Bass.It's a lot cheapper than the 600. I do think that the 500 came with the adaptor.I may be wrong.(EU model)

i tried them on at the sony store, and in my ears they sound very nice for pop and kpop! the bass is a kicker, and if thats you're thing, then waste no time and purchase em!

The xb500 is the most comfortable headphones I've owned. Unfortunately the tip of the audio jack broke. The synthetic material on xb500 ear cups wear off. Little flakes of it peel off and stick to your face so if you want to preserve it wear a headband or bandanna over your head and be careful when moving around with these on.

I actually tried on the XB600 today. Unfortunately, the sound source that it was connected to for auditioning was extremely lo-fi. They're extremely comfortable and block out more noise than my "go to" headphone, ATH-M50. I find it funny how most consumer headphones sound like crap after using almost nothing but my M50 for the last 6 months.

The one thing most music that I listen have in common is, no vocals at all. -Gaming and movies also would be a nice plus but music comes first in priority. -Comfort. Question: If the XB600 has LESS bass quantity or bass presence (not sure which you meant) compared to the XB500 how can the bass on the XB600 be "flabby" when held up against the XB500? If the XB500 has a bit more bass quantity overall, or has a somewhat less lean amount of midbass, or if it reaches deeper into sub bass, then wouldn't the XB500 have 'more' / 'more "bloated" aka "flabby"' / or "extended" / or "thicker" ...bass than the XB600? Does XB600 have "leaner" & more "one-note" bass???

I have both and i think that the xb 600 is over priced but you are right they are a tiny bit beter. I think that the right price for the 600's would be 69,99. And nice comparison i would like to se more of them :)

I wonder if headphone designers are obligated by their companies (still getting paid of course) to put out "updated" units like these even when they know (as designers) that the earlier versions are far more superior. Doesn't make any sense. The fact that its even more expensive doesn't help either. If its not better, just wait until you can make a better product and then release it.

To be honest, apart from the materials, they should have cost that much to begin with. I got them 2 years ago, and loved every second (except when it gets hot). They discontinued them and so what you find is what you get. Don't think price will drop until they come to their senses and start making them again. And i'm no audiophile, but sound is on par if not better than Beats, and comparable to sennheisers. so get them as cheaply as you can find them.

Come on hifi guy, you should know this. The 500's used to be $50, but they were increased to $80 due to high demand, and it's the same story with the 700's. The 700's used to be $80, but now there $130 due to the same reason. So it is actually a $20 jump up with the new 800's and 600's, but either way it sucks that SONY decided to raise the prices.
