Sony MDR-XB800 vs. MDR-XB700 Extra Bass headphones review

I'm on my second pair of xb800 and I'm in love. I won't lie...I'm a bass head...but I found these to deliver well in highs as well (for bass headphones) I think in the end...it all depends on the person. These headphones hit the spot with me personally. But I would recommend to at least try them. As for me, I'm buying a couple extra 800s.

if you want in your face bass that shakes when you put them on, go for the XB500 if you can find them. but if you want more clear sound with more refined bass that doesnt shake when you put them on but still has high bass go for the xb700 or xb900 (they still shake but not as much as the xb500). yes the higher they are better the sound but if you want just bass that will tickle your ears :) go for the xb500. otherwise xb900

yep great choice either way you go.. xb500 or xb600. if you cant find xb500, get the xb600.. you will love either one. i own most of the xb lines so i have some experience. you will enjoy either one you buy. hope this helps.

Thanks for this. I needed some new headphones which were readily available locally (in the UK) and really wanted XB700s. Unavailable here, so today I bought a pair of XB800s (despite this review!). What you say is all correct. I've had worse & won't return them - a certain amount of tweaking graphics equalisation on my MP3 has helped - but in truth they could be better in separation & presence. On the positive side they do block ambient noise well. As you say, listen before buying if possible.

I got the xb300 today and i have to say that was the best thing i got this month, amazing sound quality and amazing comfort, i cant imagine how the xb700 could beat them.

It's a real shame they discontinued the XB700 and XB1000. The XB1000 had a massive 70mm driver. I'd have liked to buy those. :(

Seems like the new XB series of headphones are not as good when compare to the older one. But Sony's new XB IEM is quite good. People who want Sony XB headphones should quickly get the older one before it sold out lol.

Got the XB700 2 days ago, Didn't want to take the risk with the new line... I have to say the XB700 has less bass in them but they are way more refined... I love them! Paid a little extra for them but It was worth every penny. Got the 500 on the side just in case something happens in the future...

I've just ordered MDR-XB700. Around 84USD for new in Poland :) One thing that I don't like just from watching this comparison - XB800's plastic produce crackling noise with the smallest movement - would be very irritating when using those headphones for watching movies etc.

the sony Xb-800 sound muddy, but i found a GREAT way to improve them u would not believe. Thing you need: a tooth pick or something close to it step one: in the center poke a small hole into the fabric(not too far in like 1/4 of the pick) step 2: then around that hole poke 4 more holes in square formation and your done.and u will notice a big sound difference

considering you say that the 800's are actually a little worse compared to the 700's, can your compare the 800's to the 500's, because it is what i currently own as of right now

xb700 are very large, not something you want to ware outside. although the price is great i think you should go for the xb800. xb800 you can fold them too so that makes it easy to carry them around.

I feel your pain, I bought the 700s just in time but I fked them up a little, the cushions have teared proper bad and had to sellotape one side to the head band to stop it falling it off, although the sound quality is still great. Damn, I want the 1000s, I hate on-ear headphones >

Xb700 cost $199 on Amazon. Sony should bring it back along with the xb1000. The fit is tight on the ears on the xb800.

1st break in the headphones with somewhat loud music with bass to loosen it up. Witch it WILL make a difference then do what I said in the other comment for a better clean bass sound and better highs(voice) after all that the headphones are like 7/10

I'm not a bass head and prefer clarity and balanced audio with enough bass to justify the sound and usually use sony ieds. However ive had to commute alot on the tube and want a better headset and love the look of these. Are the xb700 insanely bassy compared to sonys balanced line?

I've used my Xb700's just over 2 years now and listen to everything from garage to trap to classical, and I've got to say overall, they are more bass orientated than Sony's balanced line, however it's not an overpowering bass which is crucial, it means it works to pick up the bass a lot more than Sony's balanced line (especially useful if listening to music designed to be played with a sub) and bring it into the music without blasting out higher frequencies. It's the perfect balance in my eyes and I'm yet to find something which beats them for what I want.

buy it. If you have to choose between XB700 and XB1000. What can i say that XB1000 are really big headphones and you have to have some AMP, because it will be a waste of money and headphones.. so if you buy headphones for home XB1000 if you buy headphones for outside home XB700

What a shame. The new xb400, 600, 800, and x10 all look sexy, as far as electronics go. Too bad they don't sound as good as they look. I even tried out the x10 at a best buy demo stand, and the comfort was amazing, to say the least. And that plastic creak I kept hearing throughout the vid is not a good sign of the xb800's build quality. Cheap plastic at this price is almost unacceptable, IMO. Let's hope Sony's other $300 phones, the MDR-1R, doesn't disappoint.

I'm just really disappointed that the xb-600 line doesn't adopt the xb-500 cup design. Everything else is cool, but, i just wish I could find a worthy successor. My pair is starting to fray, but i'll be damned if I go back to on ear headphones with weak-ass bass.

ath m50 has punchy but refined bass and a soaring treble capable of refence quality. xb has a very detailed bass response mids and highs present but blanketed in a soundstage(very natural sounding a bit to bassy at times. but when it comes down to value... xb is capable of as high frequency response as ath m50 also cheaper,buuuuuttttt they sound VERY different the ath m50's have a very sharp crisp overemphasized treble (can be unatural) but xb's have a more natural highs and mids anddetailedbass
