Sony Movie Studio 13 - Top 10 tips and tricks

Great video. I wasn’t aware of many of the features you point out, even though I know this software pretty well. Here are a couple of specific comments about two of the tips in your video: Ignore event grouping - I find holding Shift down when dragging the edge of a grouped audio or video clip to be the quickest way to make an L or J cut. That said, I often group events together by section (e.g., scene 1, scene 2, etc.) and this feature will allow me to move clips around without having to ungroup and regroup. Make spacebar play/pause (and J K L) - I agree it’s not often that I need the play/stop behavior of the spacebar. However, I’ve gotten used to pressing K for play/pause and reserving the spacebar for when I do want the play/stop behavior. K is part of the J K L transport controls found most professional/prosumer editing software. L plays forward and J plays backwards. Multiple presses increases playback speed. I find it very useful when reviewing footage with a lot of talking, such as an interview or presentation. If you hold down K while pressing J or L, you get slowed down speeds with audio. Multiple presses goes through different levels of slow speeds.

Thanks! Decided to learn the advance features after a few years of using Movie Studio and I have to say the few things you noted like auto crop and dynamic ram previous will will help me tremendously in using Movie Studio. Wish I took the time to learn some of this before as I have years of videos with those black bars.

When I was editing the audio, I took too much space out between the words, and I don't see how to insert some space back in because I've already moved on and edited further in the track. So I can't undo. I want to insert a bit of soundless space. No one says how to do this.

When you want to get rid of the black bars you can crop it and unhighlight lock aspect ratio.

Hello, here's my task: Video will filming with two different cameras to get different frame angles, and periodically switching between them (so, it's one of the typical scenarios to make video not so boring and to bring a bit variation). Both videos then will be connected and precisely synced with one general audio track recorded on separate audio device. So for that reason it's impossible to move video tracks horizontally to get cross-fades, because syncing with audio track will be destroyed. I want to get some smooth transitions between both cameras in one video, synced precisely with one general audio track. And I'm thinking, how it's better to do that.

Yes. You can animate/keyframe, but sometimes you may need to change the aspect ratio in pan and crop for it to look better. (use pan and crop to animate)

austinque9 Actually, I had been doing something else and found it by accident. It works for me. What I do is right click the video clip, go to 'switches', click "lock" and it locks the video in place. I then move the audio where I want or whatever. That's the basic principle of what I do. Then I can delete the video or delete the audio and keep the other or move one around or what have you. Thanks for checking up on the question, though. :)

Here's the workaround I worked out: Go to Options/Preferences/Editing, uncheck "Cut, copy and delete grouped events" and Apply. Now you can delete video/audio separately, but you still can't move them separately until you: Cut, then re-paste the audio (or the video) only. Now, either video or audio can be moved separately.

When I preview the video, it previews in slow motion/choppy. Do you know why it might be doing or is their an option for that?

chevyfan88 The most likely issue is just that your computer can't cope with rendering the video in realtime. There are a few things you can try to improve the situation: 1) Change the preview playback settings (in bar above the preview window) to Draft>Auto 2) Turn on (or off) GPU acceleration (Options>Preferences>Video) 3) Transcode the video into a different format (somthing like MJpeg) before importing it, using somthing like Handbrake or MPEGStreamclip

André Augusto When I bought MS13 I also looked at PowerDirector. The main reason I went for MS13 is because you can upgrade it to Sony Vagas (Industry standard editing software for KZbinrs). Otherwise theres not much in it. PD has a simpler interface, but the flip side of that is MS13 gives better control.

+52Hider 3D I think that if you have the money, buying adobe cs6 is a much better, more intuitive and efficient software set.

Edward Harris I would always recommend Adobe software (I now use Adobe Premiere CC) but there is a huge jump from the price of Sony Movie Studio, to Adobe's prices.

+Fredd Wyatt (Novus) Give it a try and see :) Somtimes it's just that your computer can't handle decoding the HD stream in realtime.

+Fredd Wyatt (Novus) you can change the quality, which will probably make the preview playback slow. when you matched media settings at the beginning, it should be on the hd quality, you can also change that in your project preferences. when you render you can go to advanced options and select something hd.

There are a few differences between the basic Studio13 and Platinum versions alright. Great tutorial video, but the video title is a bit misleading. (Anybody who wants a discount for upgrading to the Platinum version or the Studio Suite version should create a MAGIX account and send a request along with your original Sony software serial number to get a quote. BTW, Sony sold a lot of their software to MAGIX)
