Most of the problems Kai noted have been fixed with the NEX-VG20. It now has expanded focus, a touch screen that tilts all the way forward for ego shots, and quick access to iris, gain, and white balance controls. Also it has manual controls for audio input, a choice between stereo and surround sound, and both 24 and 60fps. The big advantage of this over a DSLR is that it's primary function is video, so you can shoot longer without overheating or the camera timing out to process footage.

Having used this camera myself (and reviewed it BTW) I can say that you've woefully misrepresented what it's capable of. Why on earth would you use such shitty footage for a review? The camera - when used CORRECTLY - is capable of taking a stunningly good shot, every single sample shot in this "review" was deliberately shitty. what's up with that? Seriously, not trolling here but SERIOUSLY? Almost makes me thing something fishy is going on here :(

I was looking into getting the VG10 until you revealed that the LCD doesn't rotate a full 180 degrees. Hopefully, Sony will change this in a future model.

@whole27 25 and 30 are other standardizations that came out with the introduction of television and video. Some places in the world broadcast in 25 while others use 30. 24 is gives people the effect that they're watching a movie rather than a television show. The 5DMk2 was released in 2008 and was among the first DSLR to have video capabilities, therefore for the time just being able to shoot video was a pretty nifty function. The 5DMk3 will likely have 1080p at 60fps.

Since you guys have tried all the new equipment out there... What do you recommend for BEST LOW LIGHT AND HIGH ZOOM LENSES -- 400mm up in DARK SCENES. The footage taken from this camcorder originates from a progressive sensor. Though sony states that this camcorder shoots in 60i? This may be the case, but the progressive footage is saved as a 60i file, where the camcorder creates two copies for each frame, instead of two fields. The difference is that there are no signs of interlacement tears, which means the footage is actually progressive, and therefore you won't lose any quality by having to de-interlace the video and convert it to 24p.

ok Kai, you are all right reviewing cameras, but camcorders are not your field :) This video was all a joke, and I m cool with it, but here there is still a little interest about what you are reviewing don t let people totally down on that side. I would focus a lot on what camcorder users miss using the DSLR: - external microphone with manual level control and headphones, is it possible? - better stabilization (I can see that in your shoots, even if you don mention it, is it better than the VR? I suppose of yes, it is only in the lens? like if I switch lens I ll lose the stabilization? that will suck as I ll need to buy original sony lens that I bet are going to be freaking expensive looking for primes etc.. plus a noisy zoom is not an issue, is normal, can we avoid it zooming on the ring? a real problem is a noisy stabilization cause it affect you the whole time, I had most of the time noisy remote zoom on expensive pro camcorders I noticed that it film in very slow shutter as many other camcorders do and dslr doesnt, that is a good point to mention, very useful for night shooting on buildings, or for time lapse requiring lot of pics for second, or for fancing crappy but useful shoots in nightclubs at the end it look like the only advantage on top of a dslr is the better stabilization ..but if we lose it changing the lens wouldnt make any sense to go for it, audio maybe have a manual level control and headphones, but no canon plug, so is really not much of an evolution ..users that don t care about this stuff honestly can use a regular cheap camcorder with a fix lens and be happy with it or a cheaper dslr that give you awesome images holding it on some structure that keep your hands far from it

@whole27 I would probably suggest the 2000 if you're shooting without a rig. The 4000 almost certainly requires either a vest or massive forearms. Usually people like a wider field of view at about F8 while gliding anyway as focusing is touchy. Frame rate standardization happened around the 1930s. 24fps was considered to be the least visually straining frame rate that still gave people the illusion that they're not watching an image sequence, but an actual moving image rather.

I use already many years and mac and still i use this camera, for me it stays my favourite cam, i film concerts and music videclips that i import into Final Cut Pro, this camera is still the best to film on concerts and with not much light great audio , free for questions 👍

Only 60i on this camera DESTROYED it. If it had 24/25p or even 720 60/50p -- this camera could have rocked the world. As it is now -- no pro will touch it and few consumers know what to do with it. The only news related to this camera is that the whole world is waiting for the Panasonic AF-100.

@Mikeopellos lol, i have that one too. yes i think its a good cam. i was going to get the d3000, but its the same price as the 3100 so i was like what the hell. not mention the d3100 has a lot going for it. it has a new sony cmos sensor which is similar to d3 models and full 1080. but it doesnt have ext mic input. for video i would get the 5100, canon t2i or t3i or even sony a33 or a55 and put good lenses on it.

The only benefit to the VG-10 or 20 over the A77 in my opinion is that you can record over 30 minutes. No DSLR at this point can record video longer than 30 minutes at a time.

@DeliciousSarcasm I personally would go with the vg20 but keep in mind that you might want to buy more lenses which will boost the cost quite a bit. also, the xa10 has infrared and XLR audio inputs so that's something that might change your mind, but I'd still go with the vg20 personally.

I think K was disturbed before doing this but with some good results. I have a VG20 and all those mistakes on this modell was fixed. Maybe sony watched this, and learned a lesson. In the other way the first test of any model will be a challenge, but the 7:35 7:53 & 7:58 shots pissed me a lot. The camera dont do it unless you do it intentionally. K changed the shutter speed, from auto (maybe 1/100 or 1/60) to 1/4, and the camera just closed the iris, taking those bad shots, This or vg20 are great

@hobocamptheater Sure I can, this camera dosent have audio levels so is really hard to get a good audio in the video, specialy when you hold the camera in your hands you can hear some kind of wierd noises that your hands make by just touching the camera. also this camera just record in 30p thats it, not 24p or 60p. I say your friend should go for a canon t2i, t3i, or a 7d (or if he can a canon 5d mark ii where you can control your audio levels). hope this helps any other question just ask :)

@Blunty3000 Also, there are tons of cameras out there, camcorder and DSLR that are CAPABLE of getting a good shot. The point is, that the camera can't get a good shot unless it's under the right conditions....which kind of the point. Lots of cheap crappy DSLR cameras will take great shots in a studio with proper lights, filters, etc. But these tests are to test the cameras out in not the best conditions. It's digitalrev.

@stokeboy001 thank you for your message but my heart was set on a T3i with high speed memory card + luxury lens + zoom H4n for the sound + a solid tripod. While this not the most practical solution for filming it should give me a very acceptable quality for just about 600$ extra. If one type T3i on KZbin a lot of short movies and documentaries come. Type VG10 and you'll only find technical reviews and/or comparison videos. The Vg10/20 COULD have been fantastic...not quite there for the moment

I don't think you can shut off the AGC on this camera. Between the AGC and the onboard mike, which is sensitive to handling, the audio would suck.

@whole27 The 5D Mk2 is a great camera. I've shot many weddings on that full-frame beast. The only disadvantage to it though is the fact that it can only shoot 24 -30fps. If you plan to shoot at variable frame rates, a 7D or a 60D will shoot 60fps, but only in 720p. The reason I'm getting the A77 is to shoot 1080p at 60fp with full autofocus. This works great on a glidecam and lets me master everything to 1080p. Only problem is my colleague is a Canon user. Gotta use my own lenses lol.

Very funny tongue in cheek review of a camera that obviously falls short of many peoples' expectations. True this SOny has a much larger sensor and has nice DOF and seems to take really nice shots, BUT common guys - I have a 3 year old Canon Vixia and I can adjust the audio levels on it (YES it has an external mic input) AND it has 60i, 30p AND 24p frame rate modes. If this is going to be touted as a "step up from camcorders" it should AT LEAST have the same options my cheaper vixia has.

@whole27 The Sony SLT models, which are a sort of DSLR have autofocus in video mode. The A33, A35, A55, A65 and A77 all have very good autofocusing in video mode. The only setback with the VG10 is because of the large sensor there is a lot of moire. It's really hard to make up my mind for people like me who can use a DSLR for photos and videos but also use Sony lens' already for their DSLR....
