Can't sleep so I guess it's time for a mod. In this video I gut a cheap ebay psp 2400mAh (yeah right!) replacement battery that is pretty crap and rewire it to a legit 2500mAh lithium polymer batter from a usb power bank. Since permamodding my psp 2000 slim with cfw and a huge 64gb micro sd card I've no need for the internal umd drive so I figure the space is better utilized by a huge battery so I set out to reversibly mod my psp (that means no permanent cuts or modifications to the psp itself!) to do just that. Let's see if I run into any problems with this hack that should yield more than double the stock battery life!
Update: I've been playing the psp for around 4 to 5 hours and the meter still reads at 68%! Looks like I should conservatively surpass 12 hours of gaming at this rate.
As for selecting a battery, by my measurements the maximum size is around 65mmx73mmx10mm inside the umd bay so stay under those dimensions or the door wont shut.
I've posted a link for Ebay purchase referrals. Full disclosure: I'm trying out something new, if you use the link below then I get a small kickback from your purchase (it will cost you nothing, I just get paid for referring customers).

I have a "no experience" question: I just bought an LG battery to use for this mod, but it doesn't have those two long wire-type things sticking out of it (that you bent over and taped down). Do I just solder the wires directly to the + and - contacts on the battery then?

I have a 3010 and I have removed the umd drive, I was looking for a battery that would fit perfectly in that spot so I don't need to do much plastic cutting, I never soldered anything, and since I'm Brazil and will be probably importing the battery, I have to be sure it will all work out, was looking for 3k/4k mah batteries, would you care to suggest some? There apparently is a NoUMD mod you can install with a homebrew firmware which can aid this setup. Personally having made the error to keep a lithium battery in a small space I would suggest a custom door with a grill and go ahead and cut a small opening for the wire for a more comfortable fit just for the temperature worries. Great idea in general and excellent video quality. Funny how the video quality feels like it may be the last thing viewers would care about but as it turns out you could be talking about the digestive system of dartfrogs ... incorrectly... but if it's well lit, edited properly and has an unnecessary amount of pixels people will watch it. 😄

You could get three battery packs and utilize the space in the old battery as well with a balanced charger module added. I don't think it matters to the board to get even more hours out of it.

Hi sjm. I discovered your video yesterday and I'm amazed. I bought a used PSP 3000 last year, but the original battery is dying out, so I tried the same battery you used to begin your mod; obviously, I expected poor results from that knockoff, but wanted to try it out. Instead of throwing it away, now thanks to you I have hope that I can still take advantage of the circuit board for the PSP. Now I won't have to worry about batteries for it for the rest of my life. So just for that, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. But since it's been more than a year, I wanted to hear if you have experienced any issues with your mod: heat, voltage, the PSP turning off without warning, etc. Best regards.

I used a 2500mAh lipo battery I pulled from a battery bank. I made this video years ago and put hundreds and hundreds of hours of play on the battery so it's pretty weak now compared to when I first installed it so it could use a replacement now. Lipos unfortunately have a limited lifespan even if you take care of them.

I tried with an old official Sony one that was bulging. Unfortunately the Sony ones have much bigger boards and are more delicate. The little metal bit that join to the plastic connector snapped. I removed it and tried soldering 3 little wires to reconnect everything. I had a bit of success and managed to turn my psp on but while trying to setup everything more permanently, one of the soldering I did pulled out the entire trace and snapped it. I spotted a couple areas where I could try soldering new wires but they are so small and I am out of flux. Now I don't know what to do. Those batteries with the white text with boards that look sturdier would cost me 10$CAN to buy. I bough a 15$ battery before that was actually good. Says Ostent os on it. 1200mah and it seem pretty accurate. I already invested 6$ in the 2000mah cell. My Ostent actually work so I don't dare opening that one up.

I'm trying to do a mod like this, but want a larger capacity than 2500 mAh (just because). I did buy a few batteries, but I was an idiot and didn't fully measure as some were WAY too big. I'm working to buy a new battery that will flawlessly fit, and these are my findings on how I'm picking it. Here are the max battery measurements that I'd recommend when looking for a battery As long as it's UNDER all these parameters, then it should fit. With a larger capacity battery (longer length), it does have to meet a stricter measurement (due to the left part). -- Battery thickness (height) I'd say under 7mm, preferred as close to 6mm as possible. I bought a 4,200 mAh battery that was 8.5mm thick, and the UMD door will NOT close. It's sticking out so it's too tall in height. That's why I'd recommend a 6mm. -- For Width from the top to bottom where the UMD was, that area is around a very tight 70mm (probably 68mm). HOWEVER, the left side where the battery normally goes is just under 55mm. So I'd say the max Width should be 50mm (you will have very small room to spare). -- For Length, if you go from the left to the right all the way across, that distance is about 110mm. Now, that would be a very "tight" fit so I'd recommend a max of 105mm to give some room to spare. So, for a recap: My estimated max room to play with when coming up with a battery for the back (if you want to take up all the room): Height: 6mm would be ideal. Not sure if 6.5 or 7.0mm will work. All I know is 8.5mm is way too much. Width (If only using UMD Section): Under 70mm for sure. I'd say 65mm to be safe. Length (using only the UMD Section): This will only give you around 70 to 73mm in length to play with for the UMD section only. Width (using the whole section, from left and UMD): The width is around 54mm. Max should be 50mm to give some wiggle room. Length (using the whole section, from left and UMD): Measures about 110mm across. Estimate a 105mm max to avoid a super tight fit. ======================= The super, TL;DR version, going by Height x Width x Length (maximum range and should fit): For only UMD Section: 6mm x 65mm x 70mm. For whole back section: 6mm x 50mm x 105mm. NOTE: You may have to cut some plastic parts off, especially the section that divides UMD and Battery.

Hi! I hope you can see this comment. I have some questions. Using a battery with 3.8v would minimize the lifespan of the psp? And, the circuit board of the psp battery differs from model to model? Like, a 1800mAh is different from the circuit of a battery with 2000mAh? I'm planning to install a galaxy s4 battery in my psp, but i don't have so much knowledge in electrical area :) Btw, nice video! One of the most informatives that i saw of this mod :)
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 жыл бұрын
Luís Felipe Marconi Thanks for watching. The psp doesn't run directly off the battery, but rather uses a dc dc converter to generate the necessary voltages so being 0.1V off has little to no effect. In fact the 3.7v or 3.8v naming has little bearing since termination voltages for lithium rechargeables are actually around 4.2v. The psp batteries have a small circuit board that also tell the psp what size battery is attached so it can calculate remaining charge so when you do this mod the battery meter icon will no longer be accurate but the low battery warning will still work. I've heard that there is a way to change the reported capacity in some Chinese batteries but have yet to verify that.

Yeah I guess it's either something wrong with the psp (not likely though if it didn't drain the oem battery) or the battery protection board. I will say though that the psp will drain the battery a bit when put into standby/sleep mode unless you completely shut it off (by holding the power switch for a few seconds till the screen goes black) but if it's completely going flat faster than a month or so while sleeping then it's definitely not normal.

hi, sjm. Your video inspired me and helped me through a big battery mod installation. I was hoping you could help me with a problem since you seem to be a very knowledgeable tinkerer. Installed a 4000 mah battery in my PSP 3000 a week ago and it was working great. However, just today, the PSP quit mid game while the battery was about half way. At this point it can only be powered on with and AC adapter. With the battery installed and the AC adapter plugged in, the LED glows orange and the battery icon in the upper right of the home screen shows as full. In battery information it only reads "External source" while everything else blank. Also, I used a voltmeter while the battery was installed and it read about 3.9V for the 3.7V 4000 mah lipo. Any ideas what's going on? I would greatly appreciate any tips that you might have.

HatterAndHare Thanks. A ~4000mAh battery will be just fine so long as it fits, just be aware that it will take quite awhile to fully charge (around four times as long as the stock battery). I can't imagine how long that battery would last, but with my 2500mAh battery I am getting upwards of 12 hours.

sjm4306 sweet, thanks for the quick reply. I can totally deal with longer charge times, if it's going to last me all day I may as well charge it overnight! scrolling through the comments section I noticed mention of a timer? I'm not a tech wiz but I assume this is referring to the chip in the battery only accepting charge for the stock size (ie it would only charge to 1200mah if that was the size of the original cell). hoping I've misunderstood and I don't have to do battery gymnastics to get it to fully charge
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 жыл бұрын
HatterAndHare The psp will use the full capacity of any battery attached but it uses the size of the stock battery (1200mAh) to calculate the percentage remaining and estimated runtime. In layman's terms the battery meter may not be accurate but the low battery warning which is based off voltage and not estimated capacity will still be fine. Also the first few times you charge it make sure you keep an eye on it for any heating or swelling of the battery just in case.

lol you made it much harder than need be. i buy battery, the li ion one as well which the size needed or wanted will be up to 2500mah max. Because yes beyond that it wont fit or be flush but you need correct ones. Even lesser ones like 2000mah imo is still decent especially for 2k 3k who only took 1200mah. Anyway thats all i need aside from tools, i dont extend the connection or none of this other nonsense. I mean youre in and out if quick enough like 5min. Also makes it easier if wires coming from battery are longer , youres came with the flat metal sticking out i get mine with red and black coming out the thin wire. Use the bootleg batteries casing and prop up the board with something so it connects, solder board and the new battery, but out whats needed from umd slot to make battery fit and remove everything then just some hot glue and put back together. All this can be done just popping off the battery cover and umd drive carefully. No need to take apart system or anything. I should make a video one day for fun. Easy mod and kinda fun. I sometimes ghetto rig a little bit but in the end comes out perfect so yeah

Battery wasn't from a very high quality powerbank (it was a freebie from a conference) so self discharge was pretty high. I'd estimate letting the fully charged battery sit in a drawer would drain it in a month. However if fully charged and immediately played I got well over 10 hours of runtime on the psp with decent backlight brightness and speaker volume. I didn't time it exactly unfortunately but I'm confident enough in that estimate after a quite few charge/discharge cycles. It's been a few years since this video though and I've moved onto a ps vita as my daily driver so I'm sure the battery in this psp has aged quite badly by now.

Once you've put a few recharges in and everything is fine then you can be rest assured that the battery will behave.

nice mod. i did the very same thing to my psp 1000 phat 6 months ago. mine is slightly higher i have 10.000mAh, i put 2x 5000mAh taped together, because mine is the phat theres slightly more room inside when the UMD is removed. i managed to get hold of 2 very thin batteries, basically perform the same steps except me wiring two together before soldering. and your right about the battery timer too. its the chip on the board itself thats programmed by default with an average time reading for each 1200mAh battery on a full charge. i noticed when i also installed this 10.000mAh battery i was still only getting the same average reading around 8 hours use. but infact when i did a time test on it (leaving it on with all settings set to maximum until the battery drained) i got 36 hours and 18 minutes. im glad you also gave out the warning about these cheap chinese batteries with false capacity readings on them. the amount of people that get taken in by it (me included) is unreal. i ripped mine open too and my cell was even smaller than the one you pulled from your battery. they are most definitely fake and people should be made aware of these con artists. great video though.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You should make a video showing off your psp battery mod. I had a feeling that the timer would be off and now that you confirm I can be sure of it. As for fake battery capacities so long as you know going into a purchase to expect 1/2 to 1/4 of the listed capacity and that it may or may not self detonate I think the benefits of getting cheap replacement psp batteries to tinker with is great especially since no oem ones are being made anymore. I really wonder how much more efficient the later psp models are compared to the phat since the stock batteries went from 1800mah to 1200mah and I don't recall many complaints about a drop in battery life.
@Heavy-Bass-Man
@Heavy-Bass-Man 7 жыл бұрын
sjm4306 later PSP models will require less power hence the drop in capacity. Having built in storage too and no UMD on the PSP go doesn't require the extra power as previous consoles. I'm sure it's the go that doesn't have a UMD?? And maybe the 3000. I don't touch newer models as they can't be flashed permanently like the phats and early 2000 models can. Normally when I mod them I don't make videos. Iv never seen the point to be honest. No disrespect intended. Iv just never thought of doing it. Iv also switched out the bog standard wifi receiver and used a more up to date flat ribbon receiver from a custom pc case so the console can access all bands. Mine would only connect to WEP routers and even then it wouldn't accept any passwords. So ripped sonys junk out and works great now. What would be a cool mod. I have a 258GB SSD drive which is slightly smaller than the original battery. As iv now got the battery mod in the UMD drive. I'd like to hook up this mini SSD in the battery compartment from the pro duo reader/writer internally. I'd like to. Doesn't mean I can. Haha. Still need to do some research on the pin lay outs. Voltages etc. Would be nice though. I'm not a person to install silly leds (anyone can do that) that to me can hardly be classed as a mod. I prefer the hardcore mods. Things not every can do. The unique ones. Kids play with LEDs there basically toys so not worth anything to me. Have you done anything else to your PSP since this video?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 жыл бұрын
BASS-man Modder I think I read somewhere that now it's possible to permaflash nearly every psp model in some way. Anyway I totally agree with not caring for adding a million leds and calling it a mod. As for your WiFi mod I haven't seen that before, you should post a video. Since doing this mod I haven't had much time to do anything else but I've seen people replace the m2 slot of the go with a microsd slot which I wanna give a try but not sure since go's are getting rare and I might wanna just leave mine stock since I already have 32gb total and that's good enough for me. As for future mods I wanna try, I'm learning fpga's so I wanna make a board that grabs the 24bit rgb lcd data and converts to hdmi or vga so I can do digital video out. But that's gonna take awhile since fpga's have a steep learning curve and I'm just learning in my free time.
@Heavy-Bass-Man

sjm4306 sounds like a cool idea. Not sure if the PSP could cope with that though? CPU and ram in them i don't imagine is capable of handling that. But hay I don't know. Never say never I say. I can't disagree as iv not done it or seen it so why not. The closest I have in terms of ideas for the display. I have a 7" tablet here. The LCDs ribbon is the exact same size as the PSP 1000 ribbon. As in width. And the backlight is the same size too. Only the backlight is at the opposite end of the screen on the tablet. I'd like to try and somehow mount this screen to the PSPs mobo. But that said to play it I'd also have to completely remap the Dpads etc. That's all that's stopping me trying. I can't be bothered doing it. Lol. The wifi ribbon I used was from a aero cool strike x pc case. If you look at a phone that has wireless charge or an NFC pad. It's a slim chip encased in a very thin men brain with 2 contacts at the end. That's stick on one side to hold it to the battery. The wifi card in this case was the same. Only smaller. It was stuck just under top brace beside the hotswap bay. A wifi card normally has 2 connectors that you simply push on. Small gold ones. This one fitted the PSP perfectly and runs from the same internal wifi cable. I won't lie it wasn't a straight forward install. I did have some teething issues replacing the DPad again and closing the console up. If I get time and if I can be bothered stripping the PSP again I'll do a video of it. Not sure I'm up to having another fight with it to get it closed again haha. As for memory. The PSPs firmware has a maximum capacity of 1TB. You can buy a dual MicroSD pro duo adapter card and put 2x 256gb cards in it. Mine at the moment has 1x 64GB and 1x 128GB cards (for now) i put the new 6.35 Pro-C firmware on my PSP 2 days ago. I can now access psn again. Until Sony find a way to block again anyway.

BASS-man Modder I recently upgraded my psp to 64gb and installed the categories plugin so I can sort all my psp, ps1, and emulator/homebrew into folders. As for my lcd idea the great thing about adding an fpga to decode the lcd data and convert to hdmi or vga is that the fpga does all of the heavy lifting, all the psp has to worry about is outputting the lcd image as normal so from the psp side nothing changes. I have a low end fpga dev board with a spartan 3e and so far I've programmed a vga driver and bidirectional frame buffer but I don't have nearly enough macro cells for a full buffer so hopefully the timing will allow me to get away with line buffering or I'll have to get a bigger fpga. Still learning but I have a long way to go.

The cheap aftermarket chinese batteries use tiny cells inside and who knows if they are actually new. The last "1200mAh" aftermarket battery I bought I estimate the cell inside was actually only less than 700mAh. As for original batteries, lipos are usually rated for 80% of their original capacity after 2 years if they are properly charge cycled and taken care of. Oem batteries are much older than that by now and likely sat in a drawer so their remaining capacity is probably only a fraction of the original if they work at all by now (gotta be super careful with swollen batteries which is a common failure mode).

Hasn't bloated yet (thank god), but runtime is only probably half of what it was when I made the video. The secret to preventing batteries from bloating is to partially charge them a bit every few months even if you don't use them (up to ~80%). They bloat because they deplete too far and when charged up from completely dead after a long time a side reaction that consumes the electrolyte to produce hydrogen gas occurs, permanently damaging the cell.

a question I need to get the pcb from psp street? because it is not equal to the normal psp it is connected directly to the board
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah in that case you'd need to get the protection board from the psp street's internal battery.

how do you tell which is positive and which is negative on a board? Ive got the s110 battery board and i dont know what side is positive or not
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 жыл бұрын
It's usually marked, but there are usually other telltale signs like the negative is usually on a large ground plane and any connection to nearby polarized caps can be used to deduce polarity. The easiest way though is if the battery is still attached to just measure the voltage with a multimeter to find the polarity.
@3v068
@3v068 2 жыл бұрын
@@sjm4306 um... Slight problem with that. The battery didn't explode per se, but it did expand to an amount that makes it clear the cell is dead. I looked at the cell and there is a positive label, but no negative label. Im making an assumption that the negative lead is the one further from the positive marker, I'm just not entirely sure and don't want to fry the board.

For the connection between psp and battery module, yes the negative is the far opposite pad from the positive and the middle is the digital battery identifier signal.

@sjm4306
@sjm4306 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I could've but I only had one of the batteries I used. Also it's generally a bad idea to parallel two batteries of different capacities as the bigger one will tend to try to rapidly charge the smaller one and it could cause a fire.

how would that battery hold up in an airplane or for overcharging? would it overheat and explode like some android phone's batteries?

The original battery protection board is used and the psp regulates the battery so this is no more dangerous than an oem battery so long as you insulate exposed wiring before closing it up.

I would have done that if the battery cell that came in the original battery was reliable. This one was from China and of questionable quality (another one of these batteries I bought started to swell after a few months of use) so omitting it increased reliability as a whole.

Only issue I see with using a battery that barely fits is that if it expands a bit while charging it could possibly go galaxy note 7
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 4 жыл бұрын
If a battery expands any amount during charging or use you have much bigger problems (pun unintended). Toss expanding batteries into a fireproof case/pouch and dispose of properly because they are a ticking hand grenade if you continue to use them. Healthy lipos will not expand, however ones that are at the end of their life and have been abused will produce hydrogen gas which is why they expand. Best case they will vent and the battery will just stop working, worst case they heat up enough to ignite the gas.

I'd be very skeptical of that rating if the length and width are the same or a smaller size as this one. A lot of chinese cells off ebay and sites like that will say the capacities are 2-3x what they really are since most people have no way of testing.

Oh, yeah I've seen people using this cell for psp battery mods. The capacity for the specified volume is realistic. Yes it's thinner but also a lot longer than the one I used, requiring you to cut the plastic between the umd and battery bay so the battery takes up about 2/3rds of the psp's area.

To safely remove the umd drive yes, if you want to risk it though you could just rip the drive out from the back but that'll damage the ribbons and possibly the zif connectors on the mobo.

planning to stick 1pc 18650 at the back of the psp 3000 using plastic battery holder for 18650 and double sided tape. drilling a small hole in battery cover and directly solder the wire in + and - terminal of the psp. 1 question? what is the chip use for? incase my 18650 drain, ill pull it out and charge it to a independent charger for 18650 and not thru psp inlet charger. NO need for chip right?

Roman Jr Asidera It sounds like the pins aren't connecting well and when it loses contact the psp shuts off. Either way replacement batteries are cheap to buy just for their circuit boards and you can replace the internal cell with a larger one like I did.

Will this mod work on a original battery pcb? will it affect the new battery charging mechanism? since the pcb from the original battery still think it's connected to the original battery which is smaller in capacity instead the new bigger battery capacity thus it won't charge fully and will perform the same as the original battery?
@sjm4306

It will work with the original battery PCB. Batteries charge via constant current then constant voltage not coulomb counting so it will always fully charge but the caveat is the battery level bar indicator will no longer be accurate (however the low battery warning will still work).
