Sony PSP 3000 - How to replace CMOS - Won’t keep date/time

This is how to replace the CMOS on your PSP 3000 motherboard. If it’s visually bulging or leaking, this is the cause for if your system won’t keep a date/time at setup when you remove the battery. It can also be the cause for if your system sometimes won’t turn on with a generic battery and won’t turn on with the charger plugged in, but sometimes it’ll work fine (weird issues like that).

bro, could the cmos be related to the problem that the psp recognizes the battery for 8 seconds and then turns off?

Just a quick heads up - that's a supercapacitor, not a battery. They rarely leak but a battery might be more likely to do so, so just be careful with that. Also, keeping date/time isn't really that big of a deal so it's probs for the best to just remove it if it dies.

This motherboard was in my scrap pile due to an unrelated issue, but it also happened to have a bad CMOS. So it was a good candidate to showcase the fix anyway. I’ve done this repair a few times on other motherboards where the CMOS was the main issue, and it did resolve the date/time issue as well as other power related problems.

what if use wire attach to cmos battery instead of direct contact to motherboard, won't that be more efficient like in the future if want to replace it again

It’s pretty easy to remove it again as long as you don’t try to get it super close to the motherboard when installing. I like to sit a bit higher on solder mounds in case the cmos that I installed was faulty (you can actually check if you have a multimeter and set a battery on the contacts of the motherboard)

Can it just be taken out without removing the metal plates?

You could replace just the cell portion, but it’ll be harder to fit the replacement in there. The plates will be slightly bent from how the old one was attached and then you’ll have to use some type of tape to give enough pressure for it to work

@lundell9001 I mean I don't want to replace it but just remove and forget. I have a psp 1000 and getting random shutdowns and I suspect its cause the CMOS leaked. Also the 1000 has a capacitor not a cell like the 3000. No videos on removing the 1000 one, so asking around. I heard that just removing it will work fine, but I wonder if I need to actually desolder the thing, or just bent it and take it out.
