I have a huge collection of disc based games and none have ever gotten disc rot, and this if your house burns or a flood happens is a crazy argument. If my house burnt down I’m not going to be worried about my video games as much as I might love them. I’m going to be worried about where my family will sleep. I’ve already lost games I’ve bought digital cause I forgot my email password I’ve tried for years to get that account back, those games are gone.

What Ive come to find about disc rot, are discs stored in binders with felt/fabric sleeves. I usually check the differences, and over time you WILL get disc rot from the ones stored in felt materials, which has something to do with moisture. But Ive never come across discs stored in plastic with that issue.

Not only keeping a decent physical stash in the tuck is great, but having a different console seems to be handy as well. If I wanted to play online matches of MvC2 from the MVCFGC, I can do that with no problem on the Switch since the PS5/PS4 version was down. I remember when the PSN outage first happened in 2011, my co-worker acted like he couldn't game at all because he was so used to online matches. I was fine, because I had other consoles and retro games to fallback on.

I'm fine with both physical and digital games but for different reasons. I normally collect physical games that usually come with some extras such as artbooks, manuals, or steelcases but sometimes I prefer to have them for trade-ins or to sell if I ever get bored of them and want something else. Digital games are good because it is just way more convenient to power on a console and just start playing right away. No fetching for a game, opening up the case, and carefully grabbing the disc and inserting into your console. You just find the game on your digital library, then select it and play. It's as simple as that! Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I only do physical. I have discs and cartridge games as far back as NES. My dad taught me to take good care of my possessions when I was a kid if I wanted them to last. My NES games (all my games) still have the original box and play like they did 30+ years ago.

You can't get away from licensing games from Steam if you want access to some of the most popular PC releases, but if I value it enough I will own it on console instead of digital only. I have a lot of ps1 digital downloads though for my ps3 to justify pirating them in the future. I already paid for the games and if I have to permanently lose access I will use a pirated copy as a backup of my digital purchase. I don't like that that is a way I have to go eventually, but I don't have a digital copy of any game that I haven't paid for in real life or to the publisher. I would just like to always have access in as affordable and direct a way as possible.

well they on paper aren't wrong about how you COULD lose them, but if you're a collector you would try to minimize that loss. But its MOSTLY older ancient games on cds at risk of disc rot but even then a LOT of those are still holding up fine in the right enviornment. Physical is more important though. Cartridges hold up better as long as there isn't too much moisture because any cartridge is a circuit board inside which can be repaired by electricans. Its more about the chip rot of the rare and special chips inside certain ones that's a potential real issue as those can't be replaced easily. But its why repros and everdrives if you use sparringly and don't pay as much as the real version is worth for them are ok options, or emulation if resorting to that is nessescary
@patg108Күн бұрын
i wouldn't do all the RGB the shelf lighting or setup, i mean its pretty and maybe to make it a bit more festive for the holidays fine. But for regular use to RGB the storage or the setup is just ASKING for more potential trouble via higher electric bills, and risk of that potentially staring a fire vs just a shelf with games, unless a beam of light focuses on some paper just like on a magnifying glass not much chance., And you can minimize fading and disc rot developing further than it already has by simply keeping minimal amounts of lights allowed into the room and on the consoles as that helps accelerate it. And that can't be repaired on coverart or manuals or exposed discs laying around or art on cartridges. As far as loose carts well you can always put them in small ziploc bags as a cheap solution if you can't simply get a end cover like on snes games made to fit I'm certain there is aftermarket made to fit any cartridge size as well as originals. And any collector (or person) would be wise to invest into a whole house surge protector and a electrician to install it. Sure you may have to skip out on the latest releases for maye a month since its about $80 and the electrician a lot more for the work probably. But then you have even MORE peace of mind since that also protects ANY electronic plugged in and able to be taken out by a power surge As far as media in a binder you can always do simple experiments like trey a paper sleeve of a couple burned discs on the same media one with and one without and see which holds up better in a cheap binder. And wouldn't hurt to have a extra in the good binder. Just experiment with that as a test subject rather than a legit copy of a game or movie or something that is more valuable than a bootlegged backup.

I heard that the PSN outage was due to some internal Sony US employees getting laid off. Instead of leaving gracefully, they decided to go full scorched earth. Shutting down PSN probably meant that all security measures had to be activated to prevent any ex-employees from accessing backdoors and causing more trouble. It’s no surprise that Sony seems to be struggling lately, especially with their leadership focusing on woke politics and censorship. They’re following in Microsoft and EA footsteps with subscription model and go full digital without even consulting their fans. With a Japanese CEO now at the helm, maybe we’ll see a shift back to physical gaming, end online DRM for games and a stop to these live services, along with a halt on overpaying for woke western developers.
