Bought it last week for full price. Replacing an old nikon d60 with 18-200. Will be used as travel cam and hiking wildife cam (mostly reptiles and birds). Used it now one time and got some neat bird photos which i wasnt able to capture before. Compared the pictures with my pixel 8 pro, considered top of the line smartphone camera. Even without optical zoom the sony captures way more detail. Happy with it so far.

I really appreciate this video and adore your style. It’s like you are asking and then answering the questions I am asking before I think to ask them. Very cool. Of course, I subscribed immediately. I have an old Minolta SRT 101, an old Nikon F1, a Nikon D90, a Nikon D610, a bunch of DX and FX lenses, a Fuji X100T (great for portraits), and a terrific Really Right Stuff tripod with a great ball head. But I am older now and really don’t want to carry this gear around. The point and shoots are interesting but feel small in my large hands, so this Sony RX 10 IV seems just about perfect. I always shoot in RAW and post-process primarily in Lightroom (which does 85% of what Photoshop does). This sounds like the camera for the future travels for an older retired guy.

Hey. Thanks so much for your comment ! You certainly have some great gear there and you bring up a great point about traveling. Who really wants to lug around all those lenses and extra gear through airports with the potential of something getting damaged, etc. The one camera solution is so much more practical snd the compromises are minimal. Not sure if you saw my other video comparing the RX 10 to a full frame (Alpha One) but the results are a bit surprising. At least they were to me ! Best of luck in your shooting ventures and thanks again for your support !

@@techtoremember8096 Yes I saw that video too! I was as surprised as you were! A neighbor across the street shifted from high end Nikon DSLR’s to the Nikon Z system. Granted, he is an excellent photographer and has a small portrait studio in his retirement. And I am super impressed by the Z mirrorless cameras as well as the Canon R series mirrorless versions. But … they are still heavy. Next summer I’ll be cruising around the Med at visiting many archeological sites with uneven ground and slippery-with-time steps. While I could take the full frame kit, why do so if I can have a more than adequate camera that is light, shoots RAW, has a super-telephoto? I know people think Sony will release a Mark V sometime soon, but my view is that this Mark IV is great, and if they do release the V in the next months, I am guessing my IV purchase will cost less. Thanks again.

The only problem is no updates or refined models since the superzoom and point-and-shoot lines are discontinued. It's the end of the line, hence the pinnacle of what we are going to be able to get. FF superzoom like the Sony 24-240 is far less zoom, and while it's FF, the optics is not as good. Of course, the Tamron 16-300 for APS-C is the next best thing, a larger sensor and 27-450mm is closer, but literally nothing is like this camera with 24-600mm and this quality. I have the Nikon P1000, which has far less quality but a larger telephoto lens. You can get more zoom or better quality, but nothing else like this zoom, with this quality.

I could never forget my RX10iv. It is the absolute fastest focusing camera I've ever had. In flexible spot mode it grabs bird photos that I would be waiting for my my excellent Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 lens (image quality wise, but not focusing speed wise. I adore my RX10iv. It is my favorite good light event lens because of its range and fill-in flash. No lens changing necessary. It is truly a treasure. I'm not expecting Sony to make a mark v model, but I'd be sure to get one if they did. By the way, the viewfinder of this camera is head and shoulders better than that of the Sony A7iii (I think they fixed the viewfinder in the a7iv) and I think the out of camera camera is much better in the RX10iv than the A7iii.

I've been tempted by the Sony RX10 iv in the past but went with the Leica V-Lux 114. Still, I think the Sony probably has the edge on the 114 except when it comes to ergonomics and the direct access controls featured on the 114. I hate menu diving when handling speed is important. Another feature of the 114 was that it allowed you to shoot video and stills (limited) at the same time.

Used almost every day since (it's not subject to any shutter count limitation) I recently retired it, purely due to reasonable wear and tear which has left it working fine but a little battered. I have owned this camera since 2022 and I love it. I only wish it had a longer zoom. It says 600mm but it is really only about 350mm on a cropped sensor. I definitely aren’t able to zoom onto distant subjects in optical zoom like you do. I also found that the quality of images in clear image zoom aren’t great for wildlife. Instead, choosing a Medium image size instead of Large gave me better photo quality. Do you agree or can you please explain the difference between clear image zoom and Medium image size. Also I can’t find silent shooting anywhere in the menu! Can you please elaborate on it. Thank you so much for this fantastic review. I learned so much more even though I’ve had the camera for about two years. Yours is my favourite camera channel.
@techtoremember8096
@techtoremember8096 2 ай бұрын
Hi! Let my try and address the concerns in your message. Whenever we talk about "mm" its the equivalent focal length of a full frame camera that we are referring to. So yes, when you talk about 350mm in a cropped sensor camera to get the equivalent focal length you multiply by 1.5x so your 350mm cropped sensor is actually equivalent to 525mm, a bit less than the 600mm of the RX10IV. I would ALWAYS set my image size to the highest quality. If you use medium or low, you are sacrificing resolution of the image. You might as well use all the pixels of the sensor and the best the camera has to offer so set your image size to maximum! Not sure why you are finding that medium is giving you better quality than large? Clear image zoom is simply a form of digital zoom (but not as intense). It is magnifying photos by about 2x and videos, 1.5X getting you closer, HOWEVER its not a true optical zoom so when you inspect the image closely, there is degradation and it seems you have confirmed this in your wildlife shots. Sony claims that clear image zoom is essentially like optical zoom, but its not really. They are using an algorithm which they claim is better and it isn't bad, but I personally don't use it. If I want to crop into a photo, I will do that later in the editing process. So to sum up, I'd use the largest file size, don't use clear image zoom and you should be getting good photos. The sharpness of that lens is outstanding across all focal lengths and if you're not getting good images I'm worried you may have an issue with your camera? You can always get it checked out at a photo shop or maybe even send it in to Sony. To answer your question about silent shooting, go to the menu, under "camera settings 2" select "audio signals" choose "off" Select Shutter type :"electronic" That should do it! Not sure why Sony didn't make that easier but leave it to them!

Hello. Enjoy your presentations. I just wanted to chime in. I'm an enthusiast photographer, starting about 20 years with the advent of digital. I went the Canon route of 4/3 with the Rebel, then 60D, and finally 6D. And of course several lenses. I enjoy making travel videos and shooting florals and landscapes. About 4 years ago I took note of the then-new Sony RX10IV and the more I looked the more I realized how wonderfully versatile it was and how good the overall IQ was. I decided to pull the plug and purchase one and have never looked back. Looking back at some of my older work, the Sony just plain produces better results for me than what I was shooting with the Canon. And the video is fantastic. Long story short, I sold all my Canon equipment back to B&H and also purchased the Nikon P1000. The two are all I need. The Nikon is fun, takes very good videos, has insane reach but just average IQ. When we travel, it's just the Sony and I get super results!

Hi and thanks for your comment! I would definitely recommend the RX10 for birding with its great zoom. If you move from the Nikon just realize you will be going from an APS-C sensor to a 1" sensor but the Sony can definitely hold its own against larger sensor mirrorless cameras. It's a very underrated camera for professional photography -- of course just realize that it's not an interchangeable lens camera so the maximum zoom on the Sony is 600mm (900 if you go clear image zoom). You can't add any more lenses as you could with a camera that has a interchangeable lens option. Your Nikon is a 500mm which is equivalent to a 750mm in full frame terms on your APS-C camera so actually the Sony would give you slightly less reach than what you currently have. Please realize that! Hope this helps -And best of luck!

I've watched several of your videos and found them very helpful. My old Sony Powershot SX-10 IS finally died. I loved that camera. It was great for backpacking & long hikes. I'm really interested in this Sony RX10-IV, but it's so expensive. Are there any other zoom bridge cameras you would recommend? Something with at least 300mm zoom & preferably a full size sensor. I've ruled out the Panasonic FZ2500, Kodak PIXPRO AZ528 & Nikon P1000. Mostly used for landscapes, flowers, nature & wildlife.

Hi there. You put in your comment a full sized sensor. Technically a full size sensor camera (35mm sensor) will be in a mirrorless or DSLR and you'll have to change lenses and it wont be a bridge camera at that point. So, you are stuck with either a 1" sensor like the RX10 or smaller. You may want to look at the Panasonic FZ300. 600mm zoom and I think its actually sharper than the 2500 even though its a small sensor. I have a few videos on the FZ300 ....thanks for the comment!

No problem. No, the FZ300 has the small cell phone size sensor. But I don't know if you saw my video where I compare it to the 2500 (which does have the 1" sensor) and it compares very well. The only 2 cameras left that have the 1" sensor are the RX10, the 2500 and the older FZ1000 mark 2 so there are very limited options for the 1" sensor. Hopefully the manufacturers will release updates on these one day! You also have the RX100 VII by the way, but that only has a 200mm zoom.

Nice video! I really am doubting that there will ever be an RX10 V. If there is one I will be first in line to get it. I sold my Mark 4 a couple of years ago but I I do find myself missing it occasionally. It is a remarkable capable camera and even though it has some quirks I don’t think there is anything quite comparable to it yet. I have been thinking lately of buying a super zoom mostly for travel and wildlife. I currently shoot an OM systems OM-1 which is amazing. I mostly use it for birds with the 300mm F4 Pro prime lens. It’s great and while much smaller and lighter than a similar FF setup it still can be too large for convenient travel. I usually take 3 or 4 lenses. While I would lose some AF performance otherwise it is not dissimilar from my OM-1. I do think that the common use of noise reduction software now makes it a much better choice than when it came out. I also found that many venues won’t allow ILC cameras. I have gotten into many events with the Sony.

Awesome video, awesome camera, thank you 👍 I switched from FF to MFT 6 years ago and I often thought about getting this camera. Let's see if the RX10V will be released at the end of this year (there are some rumors about that) and I'll probably get one. If Sony will be able to get some computional effects in this camera like the Live ND mode of my great Olympus camera, the RX10V might be MY camera. Thanks again and greetings from Germany

Hi there, yes the Canon sx70 does zoom in quite a lot more. The sensor is smaller, the stabilization isn't great and so the resulting images will not be as sharp and clean as the Sony's but you do get more reach. So it depends on critical you are about image quality to determine which is the better option for you.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. As you know there are so many options today to shoot indoor sports. Since it’s indoors you might want a bigger sensor due to lowlight concerns A full frame sensor like an A7 iiii or 4 would work but then you need lenses. Nice thing about the Rx 10 mk 4 is that it’s so versatile. One lens is all you need and even though it’s a smaller sensor it still holds up in low light. ! So why not the Rx10 mk 4? especially if you’re already familiar with the Sony ecosystem, menus etc !

@@RobVarley The low available light conundrum can be mediated by a camera with a decent ISO range as well as a larger sensor. The problem is finding a solution to all of the problems. A full format sensor will gather in more light, but most full format digital single lens reflex cameras are interchangeable lens systems. So, you have the lower light capacity of the larger sensor, but you gain heft or weight and considerably so. The lens you may choose will cost more if it has a f/2 at the widest, for example, so as to allow in more light. At this wide open setting, your depth of field is crap. If the target is sports then movement is part of the problem. You can shoot at a faster speed, at the loss of light gathering. You may choose to shoot on a stable tripod but then lose some flexibility in terms of moving with your sports or inside target. To have the camera system (including ‘fast’ lenses and full format sensors), you will have to spend a huge amount of money.

Great overview of a great camera. It may not be the best camera for any one thing, but it does a lot of things very, very, well. I purchased this camera in 2018 for a month-long trip to Africa. It took me a couple of weeks to learn how to use it adequately, and I still don’t know how to use half of its functionality. I produced great images allowing me to get close to the subject without being eaten. Having one camera body and one lens made moving from camp to camp, and around in the field much easier. Others had bags of camera bodies, multiple lenses, and other accessories making it hard to get around and more expensive as luggage weight is limited on flights around the Mara, and extra pounds cost money. The camera is also well sealed (not water or dust proof, but better than many) alleviating some of the worry about keeping your equipment clean. I do agree about the battery though, it doesn’t last long if you’re shooting a lot, but having two extra batteries got me through the day without any problems. All in all, a great camera. If they don’t come out with the V, and if my IV ever breaks down, I would buy another.

I've watched quite a few of your videos, and you do a fantastic job with everything from specs to performance. Your models are easy on the eyes also! I'm searching for a bridge camera to video auto sports. I was liking the Sony RX 10 until you pointed out it won't refocus while zooming. That's a critical requirement for auto sports, because for video, as the car comes closer or moves farther away, both focus and zoom need to constantly match the car's position. 1. Can I rely on the Sony's autofocus while manually tracking zoom with the lens ring? 2. Are there better bridge cameras for recording auto sports? 3. Or will I have to move into full-frame cameras? Most of the lower-cost bridge cameras have other onerous deficits.
@techtoremember8096
@techtoremember8096 Жыл бұрын
Hi there. First, thanks so much for your compliments. Much appreciated! As for your focus question, that's a good one. Its very hard for most cameras to focus while zooming to be honest. Even mirrorless cameras can struggle with that (the larger sensor makes it more challenging). I will say, the RX10IV does a very good-excellent job with AF in sunny conditions. Not sure if you remember the scene in the video with the man riding the bike, how the AF locked on during that scene. More modern cameras do have a AF "tracking feature" for video and since you mentioned cars, some of the newer cameras like the Nikon Z8, Sony full frame cameras and Canon can detect cars, if you input that in your focus menu, so they will actually use algorithms to keep a car in focus, if it detects a car in the scene. If this is your primary use for the camera, then a mirrorless with this focus feature might be for you. Naturally, it's going to be way more money. I will say, that in bright light and if you are not fully zoomed in, I do think the RX is up for the task. You can also use manual focus if it super critical and try that but naturally that's going to require a lot more effort! There are no other bridge cameras that I am aware of that would have this sophisticated focus feature that I mentioned however. The Nikon P950's focus is very good but its a small sensor camera and that zoom is even higher and subject to AF errors So if you want a bridge camera the RX10IV, even though its older, I do believe is still top notch for focus. For the best in focus today, you'd have to upgrade to a mirrorless unfortunately since that's where the manufacturers are spending the most time and where the latest tech is. I hope this helps and thanks again for your support.

Thats a great question. There's always a chance but its not looking likely at this point. If Nikon releases a successor to their popular P1000, another Superzoom camera which is very popular for birders and people who shoot wildlife and it sells well, then I think other manufacturers like Sony might join in but it may take a few more years. In the meantime, I use the RX10IV frequently and it holds up very well even by today's standards.

The Sigma (on a full frame camera I assume) will give you a better image, no question. You will also get good bokeh on the RxMark4 at long telephoto. They are 2 very different solutions. The Sigma and full frame camera will be significantly more expensive (when you consider the cost of the camera). But for pure picture quality, the Sigma will be better, but if you are doing hidden camera videos where discretion is important, the RX solution will be much smaller. Hope that helps!

You could go that route sure. They are similar in many respects. Autofocus has been improved in the 4 and a few other things but for the most part they are similar

@1945 you mentioned that the RX10iii has an ND filter, when in fact it doesn't. The original RX10 & the next generation RX10ii both had ND filters, but it was discontinued with the RX10iii. Other than that, great video highlighting what it can do in the real world.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I had actually heard from someone that the RX10-Mark3 did have the ND filter but made the mistake of not independently verifying that. Thanks for pointing that out and correcting the record. Thanks for watching!

Thanx for the review. I own the Panasonic FZ1000 for the last 6 years now. Good camera. I like it a lot, but now it's starting to show its age. I am thinking either to finally take the step forward in my photography (there are limitations to what a bridge camera can deliver as far as quality goes) and jump to a mirrorless, such as the Sony A6400. But, i am really drooling over the RX10iv, even though it is old, and maybe because of that, because it is amazing and now can be bought for affordable price second hand. Since you seem like an experienced guy, which of the 2 would you choose, and why? Thanx

Hi. Thanks for watching. You ask a good question. I think what you have to ask yourself is how important is the ability to change lenses ? With the6400 you will get a bit better picture quality it’s a larger sensor but you will trade off in that long zoom of the RX mk4. They are both good choices. You can’t go wrong but if you really want that long reach , I’d say the RX still holds up today. I was surprised how close it came to a full frame camera. Feel free to check out my comparison review on that. Hope that helps a bit !

@@techtoremember8096 Thanx. As an owner of the good Panasonic FZ 1000, which is second only to the RX10iv, I got used to the long zoom and use it a lot. But a 135mm lens on the a6400 will give me an equivalent of 230mm on the RX10 1" sensor, which is good enough, especially if the return is a better low light performance, better autofocusing, better image quality and flexibility etc. It's hard to decide. oh, and it's a real bummer that such a great camera doesn't have timelapse. Such a pitty and no explanation because it is only a firmware update. It is really tough to decide.

Your analysis is sound. Maybe get both.? Lol -good luck in your decision. Whatever you decide, either I’m sure are great choices I suppose if you wanted further reach you could get an even longer zoom for the 6400 down the road

Nice. Unlike others, your unique presentation I like. I'm tossing between this camera and my A6100+ the 70-350mm Sony lens. What's your suggestion? Thanks.
@techtoremember8096
@techtoremember8096 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment ! As to your question, well I think you have to decide if the 350mm is enough reach ? It’s certainly a long zoom but 600 mm is quite a bit longer. Are interchangeable lenses important to you ? You can’t go wrong with either camera but a 70 mm lens on the wide side is very limiting. 70 mm is definitely not a 24 mm which the Rx10 mk 4 has I would say that lens 70-350 is more of a specialty lens. You’d need another for more wide angle purposes.

@@techtoremember8096 I currently have the RX10M4 and A6100 with 18-135mm, 70-350mm and the kit lens. I'm trying to sell the 70-350mm but I'll lose $ so I might as well keep it for certain situations.

Not even close; the Sony is a far better camera. The longer lens of the Nikon is cool, but being so long half the time you would need to use a tripod to get clear images. Who wants to carry around a tripod?! Never mind that the P1000 has a sensor no bigger than a smartphone but without the computational power of a phone.

The sx70 is not even on the same universe as the rx10 in terms of IQ, autofocus etc. The only it got is a longer range. The Nikon p950 is superior to it for that purpose.

@@techtoremember8096 Yes please do. I am deciding between P950 and RX10 IV. I'm currently shooting with HX99 720mm and that is not quite enough for me. The RX10 IV has "only" 600mm zoom but bigger sensor - with a crop to 1/2.3 it would give 1200mm 5 megapixel equivalent and with f4 great lens at telephoto.
