What's up everyone?! I hope this review of the Sony RX10 IV is helpful. Did you like it? Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏 This a crazy all-in-one camera from Sony with 4K, good image and video quality, external mic input, slow motion and even super slow motion. Let me know what you think!!

Tech Gear Talk For someone who use the camera on my phone for everything (and it does a great job), I don't know much about actual handheld cameras. Very informative and visually pleasant review. Funny blooper at the end haha. I have one comment though. Regarding the screen I personally don't actually mind that it's not full touch. 3" screens are too small to press the right place for me and my big hands/fingers. I like the classic type menu control buttons. For what I do, I wouldn't buy this camera simply cause it'd be luxury more than actually needing it and the price is a bit steep. Granted, Sony definitely makes great cameras so if you're in the market for one it could be a good buy.

Those are good points Marcus. I can see what you mean about the touch screen, especially if the user experience is not ideal for larger hands.

It is a great buy. I bought the RX100V when it came out. I loved it. The only thing I felt that was missing was a MORE ZOOM. When the RX10IV came out - I jumped on that also. RX100V goes with me every where - and RX10IV goes for more serious occasions - like getting that massive zoom on a bird 20-50 feet away, or the moon.

Let's put it this way. When I owned a A7RII and X-T2 along with their top lenses, I compared shots taken with this camera with 22x17 prints. The differences were virtually non existent. I sold off all my other gear and now stick with the RX10MkIV. It delivers the goods for both portrait work I do along with all the landscapes which are outstandingly sharp and rich in color accuracy. If you're NOT a cropaholic and don't print beyond 22x17 this camera CAN be all you'll ever need.

@@letran-kz7pw I own the RX10IV. The lenses are excellent, very sharp and rather fast aperture (would have loved even faster f1.8 instead of f2.4, but not that bad). To me, the only drawback is the small sensor that makes it hard to shoot in low lights, or night skies (milky way) properly. For that, you want to get an APS-C or full frame sensor (a6400, a7...) But for its price, compacity, versatility, it's a very good camera. I won't sell it before a while. Number one choice when hiking or shooting random things.

The flexibility with interchangeable lens camera is that you can replace the lens anytime if it is damaged, although here we have a fixed lens and not sure if its repairable at all. But I totally agree that its more usable compared to a DSLR as you explained in this wonderful review👌

Thanks for your review. The detail was appreciated and I concur with all you've shared. I've had my RX10 IV for a few months and I'm thrilled with it. One classic was the focus, where I began shooting an owl starting its flight about 60m away, and as it flew towards me, the eyes were in focus the entire time! That's the reality of 24fps! Absolutely love this camera. Keep your good reviews coming.

I live in Northern Uganda. I shoot wildlife, which this 600m is fabulous for. I used to have a good Nikon kit which I loved, but I just can't afford lenses that can get the reach that I need when out on safari. I have a school for orphans so candid kid shots is one of my favourites too.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
WOW!!! That sounds absolutely fantastic!!! Yeah.... I don't know how you get 600mm without breaking the bank (and your back, when you have to carry it around). And still, you would have to change lenses all the time.

Exactly--plus it's huge thief-bait! But the Sony RX10 IV is so up for the challenges, so adaptable and I've started putting together video clips so we can get our awesome kids documented and out there. I have to travel through dodgy places--last week Congo and Rwanda on funky buses, and back and forth to Kampala and the Sudan border and this camera can be tucked away and become almost unnoticable to thieves! Another huge plus from my perspective.

I recently rented a Tamron 150-600mm a-mount lens for my 99Mii. It worked out fabulously but I got a hard does of reality of how tiresome and cumbersome carrying around that beast is (...including my middle-of-the-road tripod)! Knowing SONY can be different than Canon, I really loved your video. I purchased this camera about 4-5 months ago AND I AM VERY VERY HAPPY AND IMPRESSED with this camera. I will pixel peep my photos and this camera is amazing. I will take numerous shots of the same subject and very very few of them I have to trash because they come out so wonderful. I shoot predominantly Canon, but also use Fuji, Nikon, and Olympus, however I have been shooting with the RX-10MkIV on and off for a couple of years, because it offers me a brilliant all-in-one solution. I consider it to be the finest bridge camera in the world, even though it has been around since 2017, it is still unsurpassed for its combination of features. The native focus range of 24-600 is brilliant, but it has a feature called IMAGE FOCUS BOOST that expands that to 1200mm without noticeable loss of quality. That puts in it the range of the Canon PowerShot SX70HS range, but with the much better processor and many other features that are ahead of its time.

Why wouldn't they make this a flip screen? Seems otherwise a great choice for a vlogging camera.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure. I don't think this was intended as a vlogging camera, so that is probably why. You would have to alter the design a bit and they probably didn't see a large enough user base. It's also at a higher pricepoint so again, maybe that was not the intent. From my perspective.... do it anyways :D. What do you think? What are you shooting with?
@ptxnoel3705 жыл бұрын
Who ever thought of this kind of screen is nuts, why replace the flip screen with this?
@rccasgar5 жыл бұрын
@@ptxnoel370 Screen move is meant to support the photographer while taking the picture, not for "selfies". I did um and ah a lot prior to purchasing this camera, especially as I've only previously owned either compact or SLRs. I'm mostly happy with the results, there are a couple of things it cannot do. 1) Macro requires a closeup filter 2) Under bright light, I was testing in Thailand, panning shots do not work as the aperture is too small and lets in too much light, burning out the image. But it's been great for photographing sport and birds, and as I am currently travelling it's weight is good also. It's not perfect, but it's a brilliant camera
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын

Tech Gear Talk I'm no expert but I think that the price is fair, for anyone wanting to step up their vlogging or KZbin videos I imagine this would be a good fit, however the fact the the lense is fixed would make it less attractive to a photographer? 4k enabled devices are getting cheaper and cheaper and I think this slots in there nicely, but as I say I don't know a heck of a lot about these things 😁

MacroDSLR MacroDSLR is a digital camera tethering and remote capture application specialised for a macro or time-lapse photography. MacroDSLR controls ISO, aperture (if lens mounted), shutter speed, exposure compensation, metering and focusing modes, white balance, image quality and format and BULB exposure length. It can preview (with LiveView for some cameras) or capture and save images to selected folder with any file name prefix, count and time lapse, browse captured images and show them in Finder, zoom and stretch them automatically or manually. It can also drive camera lens or external focuser controller for defined number of steps or milliseconds for each frame or rewind to the initial position. The built-in INDIGO driver is based on ImageCapture API and, in theory, it can work with almost any Nikon DSLR, Canon EOS DSLR, Sony Alpha DSLR-like or mirrorless camera. Not every feature is supported for every camera (e.g. no LiveView or manual lens drive with older Nikon and all Sony cameras), but it doesn't mean, that such camera can't be used. As far as this application is based on INDIGO framework, it can use many INDIGO or INDI drivers for focusers for astronomical telescopes which can be easily adapted to control manual focus lenses or macro rails. The drivers for Shoestring Astronomy FCUSB and USB_Focus V3 controllers are bundled with the application.

I suspect the reason that cameras like this are not more common is because the manufacturers do not want to destroy their profitable ILC market and lens sales. I borrowed one of these and it was just great, after using one I am now finding it very hard to justify an ILC, I will probably buy one of these Sony RX10s soon. Interesting that Canon and Nikon do not offer anything similar (well I havent seen anything yet). I currently use and enjoy a small sensor superzoom which can be surprisingly good too, but the image quality falls apart in lower light conditions

Great review. Subscribed. I upgraded from the III to the IV this week (better late than never) and it is a BEAST. Focus is lightning fast, smartphone control has less of a lag than the III, shoots 4k and has s-log 3! I actually love the aperture ring and I generally prefer a non-touch screen for wildlife, especially in the winter when I don't want to take off my gloves. But touch focus for video is fantastic. I don't know why this wasn't in earlier RX10 versions. There was touch focus on the VG20, VG30 and VG900, so Sony already had the technology. The two things I hate: (1) removing the SD card requires skinny fingers. Much skinnier than mine. (2) Focus modes knob is tiny. Again, too small for my fingers. Other than that, it's a clear winner. Best bridge camera ever and, in the right hands, is every bit professional.

Canon 50D with 24mm, 50mm, and 80/200mm But, its a lot to carry around. I'm 74yrs now, with arthritis in both hands. Big problem. So, I have a terrific Canon SX710HS compact which has a great 30x zoom, and 20mm wide. I get good amateur shots with it, and it does excellent macro. The RX10mk4 seems a good in - betweener. With restricted mobility, and, not so sharp eysight, a smart camera to guarantee focus, and provide an excellent range, I get more photo opportunities. Question, With the Sony at 600mm, can I set aperture to 2.4 to minimise DOF. Blur background, and still fit the image to the sensor. Us old guys think slower, move slower, and need tech help to stay in the ame.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
That's a super complete setup you have, but it is A LOT to carry, like you said. The range of this camera is just outstanding and I think it would serve you well. You can not use 2.4 at 600, it will jump up to f4. You keep calling yourself an "old guy" but here you are on KZbin; good work!!!

Another great review. This was a camera my work purchased as they need something which could do everything they needed but keeping within a budget. The zoom was great but the focus could be a little tough shooting action shots. Overall a good camera for entry level who just wants an all in one option that keeps things simple.

Fantastic review Mark and a definite 2 thumbs up. I presently own a Lumix FZ1000 and saw that the FZ1000 M2 just came out and after viewing your review I'm thinking of getting the RX10 MIV instead because Panasonic just did a small incremental upgrade to the FZ1000 with the M2 version. I really do believe that the future of cameras will be the bridge camera's because everyone is getting tired of hauling around so much Glass (It reminds me of my old Nikon DSLR days with the 8 lenses that I would bring). Having 1 amazing bridge camera and shooting in Raw it the best of all worlds. Everyone one eventually ends up using lightroom in Post anyways and that contributes to around 50% of the image quality. The composition on the other hand is within the Camera Man :) I would just like to say, many thanks on your very constructive analysis of the RX10 M4. Very much appreciated and I am Subscribing your channel right now.

Hi Kenneth. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide valuable feedback. I'm really glad that the video was helpful. There is something super appealing about the all-in-one, especially if you get this much focal range. I mean, you'd need a whole bag of lenses!

Actually it's mainly just my family. We have a newborn and two others we are capturing with the M3. I now just need to learn how to use the thing. Still very much a novice and don't usually have the time to tinker with the hobby. So usually it's simply in auto. Your footage makes me want to invest more time.

And yes you did a good job with the video. Good quality picture,editing and clear presentation of the material. Good job taking into account keeping the video short as the A.D.D is strong with youtube viewers. Suggestion and reminder (even though there was none in the video) would be to leave politics out of your videos as you will lose half the possible subscribers. Not saying you don't have the freedom to chat about whatever you want but I have seen some reviews on this camera and they dropped their opinions in a camera review and it will push me away from wanting to watch. We all have our own worldviews but with cameras it really doesn't matter. I only say this as a tip for one that is growing their channel.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for all the insight. I will definitely stay away from politics in my review. Thank you for the compliments about my footage. As far as learning how to use the camera when it's in in auto, do you feel like you have a good understanding of a proper exposure? If not, check out this video (it's old, so I apologize for the delivery ) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqaoZ6p3eduhd7s😂

The tripod itself (legs) just need to be stable. As far as fluid head, I use a Manfrotto 504HD. There are newer and better ones out there, but I don't see a reason to upgrade for now.

@@TechGearTalk I owe you some feedback - really surprised with the AF performance from 600mm out on surf videography. 1080p 50fps is quite solid. 4k more crisp, but alas 30fps. @TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. Battery life is ok for this camera. Rated between 370-420 images depending on what features are enabled. I normally get an additional battery. You can also charge via USB so you may want to just get an external battery pack and take it with you. That way you can just keep charging on the go. Makes sense?

Great review! I got the camera almost as soon as it first came out. I had the Nikon P900 with a 2000mm reach and even tried the P1000 with the 3000mm reach but decided I’d rather have a sharp usable 24-600 rather than those mostly fuzzy Nikons. This is pretty much the best travel camera you can get! I love it.

I just got one yesterday through Lensrentals that I'm going to take along with me next week to an aviation convention I go to every couple years or so (Oshkosh). It's an "emergency" rental while I get my a99ii repaired. It sounds like it's going to be pretty useful, with a frame rate double that of my DSLT. I'd rather have my 42MP, but at least I won't have to cart around 30# worth of lenses.

Pretty impressive and detailed review. Good job as usual. Your video on the SL2 was one of the key factors that made me buy this Rebel. Thanks. Can you do a review of the competitors/Rivals... 1.- Price : Over $1K : Rivals for this 1" Super zoom: * Leica V-Lux Type 114 (or last update), * Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 mark 2, * Panasonic Lumix FZ2500/2000 (or last update FZ3500/3000 when out) 2.- Price: Under $1K: Other alternatives but 1/2.3" I would like to see a review/comparism * Canon PowerShot SX70 HS (I own a PS SX530 HS) * Nikon Coolpix B700 (B800 when out) * Sony Cyber Shot HX400V (or update HX500V when out) But they are all 20MP and have creative modes to start learning photography. I will share this video with people who want to slowly jump in photography. I suggested them to look for Bridges for now. Your video will be a good addition to convince them. + Lumix FZ80 & Lumix FZ300 seems to be good alternatives for videos as well, but the people I know will start with still photography. Thanks in advance.

I've owned three DSLR cameras and this is my fifth "bridge" camera. I recently rented a Nikon P950 for six months and it's far inferior to the Sony so I'm now renting the RX10iv which I find is the only camera in this class which has a serious "manual" function. BUT my question is why does the viewfinder black out when you operate the camera in manual, it displays darker according to the F stop which you have set it on. It was the same effect when I was using the Nikon which I couldn't wait to unload after the six month expiry. Is it because the camera is mirrorless or is it a setting I'm missing? You wouldn't expect it in a two thousand dollar camera, I have never seen this anomoly in a DSLR. Also having trouble with the auto white balance and auto exposure comp. Problem is with most of these high end cameras is that the menus have become far too complicated and once you find a setting you want, it takes a week to find it again. I am not a novice, having been a news photographer all my working life, most of my better pix were shot on film !

Thank you Chester 🙏🏻 This wouldn’t be my first choice if the primary use is low light - but considering everything else this camera offers in one package I would still consider it. I also personally believe low-light performance is overrated because of: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2PLpGt4hLmLmJY
