My wife has been shooting the RX-10 IV for about a year and it's truly a fantastic camera. We have several of her shots blown up to 16X20 and they are every bit as sharp as those taken with my D7200 and various Nikor and Sigma lenses. Very nice review.

I will always come to your channel when I'm deliberating a camera purchase. Today is slightly different in that I have already bought (again!) the RX10iv and wanted to reacquaint myself with its functions. I bought this camera back in 2019 for a trip to India and regretted selling it some months after that trip. 5 years on and I'm getting it again. It's a remarkable piece of kit that produces fantastic photos if its capabilities and limitations are understood. Thanks for the video, it was nice to come back to it after so long!

I am absolutely loving my new RX10 IV-SO many useful features. My one biggest complaint *was* the position of the dedicated “Movie” button on the back, due to my small-sized hands. But after watching this video, I am happy to say that I programmed the main button to start and stop movie recording...as well as programming the lens button to activate EyeAF-ingenious! This is really a great camera for a holiday/vacation or an outing where you don't want a heavy bag. I took mine to Panama City Beach Florida last September for a week and it was fantastic. Setting the lens barrel button to zoom assist allowed me to quickly shoot the F16/F18 fly bys from nearby military bases. They come up fast and you can easily miss them. iso 100, F4 at all focal lengths was so clear and sharp. Great review Maarten!

After your in depth review of this camera some months ago, I decided to get it and I’m happy I did. It does have a lot of features and modes, a rather large superset. For me, the key was finding which features and which combinations of settings are most important to me, there is no need to memorize the entire feature set. Thank you for your clarity and in depth exploration of the camera when used while traveling on a vacation. For extreme HDR situations, I use the handy auto bracket mode and post process the photos, but the in camera one works quickly and well most of the time.

5 years later and Sony still sells this (no V on the horizon). A local camera store has a used one in very good condition at about 2/3 of new price and I will look at in a few days. It seems to do most things very well and though on the large side, not really if one considers that it would save you a camera with at least two lenses once of which would be large to get 600mm. I’m more of a hobbyist, small camera user (hiker and backpacker who does both photos and videos) but this is very tempting for the breadth it provides. Enjoyed your video!

This is a very excellent review Maarten, convincing me to go ahead with the purchase of an RX10iv. It seems to have all that I need for a travel camera. Maarten, thanks so much for this incisive and informative review of the Sony RX10 IV. I am an avid amateur birder, and am attracted to this camera for its 25X zoom, decent sensor, and great ergonomics (despite the impenetrably complex menu). I spend more of my time using binocs rather than looking through a camera lens, and I don't want to schlep a heavy DSLR+lens on my hikes. I take almost exclusively still photos of birds. Based on what I have read, I think that the RX10 IV might be an good fit for me. But I see that the RX10 IV model is 5 years old. Do you know if/when an RX10 V (or its equivalent) might be coming out? Are there other "bridge" cameras (not a term I like) that you recommend? I currently have an old Nikon Coolpix B700, which I quite like for birding- just as long as the birds are holding perfectly still in good light and not too far away. I have yet to capture a decent photo of a bird in flight, and that is frustrating. Given the age of the RX10 IV, I am tempted to wait for its successor unless there's another "bridge" camera you recommend. I would be grateful for your guidance, and thank you for your consideration.

I have no inside intel on new Sony models - and even the Sony Rumours site can be hit and miss. I think it's still a good choice, particularly for this purpose. There are smaller cameras (with smaller sensors) that offer similar or better zooms, but their image quality doesn't compare. If you can wait and see, then do, but if you're wanting to decide now - I can still recommend it.

Great video and very useful information! I’ve been shooting with this camera for just over a year now and continue to learn new tricks about it daily. I am wondering if you happen to have a video or know of one where travel has been done in very cold, snowy climates. I’m headed to Montana and Yellowstone in February and trying to decide if I can just take this camera or if I need to be practicing again with my Nikon D750 which is so much heavier. Just curious if you had any advice. Happy New Year!

Sorry, as I returned the camera after the review, I have no further guidance to offer. Thanks for your kind words. For any camera in snowy scenes, keep your eye on the histogram and use exposure compensation to keep the brightest parts of the scene from over-exposing. You'll also find that the RAW files may offer more recoverable detail than JPG.

Thanks for sharing, your video is very informative and the manner in which you provide the content is very relaxing. I am a Canon full frame user but see the value of the RX10IV. One of my first cameras was an Olympus C8080, an 8 megapixel bridge camera. This camera cost $1000.00 in 2004 and was considered the top bridge camera for it's time. Due to the slow focusing of the model, I sold on ebay after one year and replaced with a Canon DSLR. Considering $1000.00 in 2004 money and comparing the capability of the C8080 compared to the RX10IV, at $1600.00, it really is a very good bargain for what it offers.

Nice information - I summarized it here so when I come back to it I can skip a second watch! 🙂 I set up stills to record as raw plus JPEG and video as X AVC s 4k 30p 100 megabits I set up the shutter button to record video when the cameras in video mode video and 160th requires me to use manual settings for shutter and aperture in video mode but with auto ISO to simplify the adjustments was often shooting video at f11 or higher with the ISO at 100 I judged exposure primarily with the screen aided by the meter and the histogram but still felt that some of my video scenes ended up overexposed front switch makes switching modes easy but it is possible to leave the switch at s or DMF for single as the four switches do continuous when video is selected for portraits i configured the lenses focus hold button as iaf panorama which I configured to shoot wide with the direction down and this provides a larger panorama the rx10 4 has five meter modes and I found the highlight setting to be useful for reading the correct exposure when taking photos of stained glass windows Sony's HDR mode which can capture a 6 stop range is very useful particularly when the Sun isn't quite in the right spot when you get to a landmark workaround for switching out of raw and into HDR is to assign quality to the c2 by and to set up the auto HDR at for Eevee although there were times when I increased it to 6 when the 4 is in raw plus JPEG the HDR is automatically disabled when raw is deselected HDR zone again I tried to use it the powerful continuous mode takes up to 24 images per second I set the auto ISO maximum to 6400 and when I look at the photos which were taken at 6400 that may have been conservative these turned out nicely there's ad hoc Wi-Fi to transfer photos to my phone it requires the free PlayMemories app which transfers and saves them so I can post them to Instagram I did create a my menu with format and the other settings that I adjusted frequently battery life was better than I expected I brought four but never used more than one and a bit

Good review, Maarten, and the results from this camera are convincing. With today's technology, a 1-inch sensor can turn out first-class results, and your shots prove it. I've travelled with a bridge camera like this one, and I find the size an acceptable trade-off for the amazing versatility they offer. They're even good in low light -- though on a cruise called Into the Midnight Sun, there's not that much low light to deal with ;) To me, the HDR photos came out looking a little washy, something I've found with other cameras -- but that could just be my monitor.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, they're particularly appreciated from someone who's photography experience I respect. I agree with your comments about the look of the HDR images - and I didn't want to make the adjustments in Lightroom to compensate, but that flatness (and over-crispness) can be reduced.

I sold my Sony RX10 IV after 4 month of use due to constant problems with heavy vignetting (no matter what focal length or aperture setting / raw or jpeg) and strong color banding - especially in the sky! As I read about these problems on several forums I found out that I am not the only one encountering these problems but I also found out, that there is no real solution to fix it properly! A software error? A lens error? No one really knows an Sony remains silent about it.....! Thanks for your review! It answered a question or two that may have been useful for my very recent trip to Alaska, with not enough knowledge of the camera I had just bought. The menu system is very complicated with minimum help, creating quite a learning curve for those coming from Canon. Overall I love the camera but find myself still in the learning mode after hard use for the past month. Most of my trouble was focusing, especially early on. I wound up using center focusing most of the time due to some lost shots with other focus modes, especially flexible spot. I couldn't figure out why the initial spot kept defaulting to the left side of the screen. Is there a menu setting to permanently set the initial spot to the center? I lost some bald eagle shots as a result. I also maxed out my ISO at 6400. While my moose shots show decent detail for the distance the moose are, there is plenty of noise, both luma and chroma. My biggest complaints are the aperture ring is the only way to change it, the focus modes seem to be bumped/changed into what I wasn't expecting at times where I thought I was in continuous but was confused as to how it was in MF, a mode I normally don't use.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words and comments. On mine it keeps defaulting to the right, and it's not the only touch screen camera that does that - I have yet to figure out how I'm doing that. I also have not found a setting that will reset it to the default/centre - which would be helpful even if only a power on. Yes, the smaller sensor will be noisy at higher ISOs, that's part of this camera's nature.

The camera seems to be great for my needs (since I like wild life photography and also want to be able to shot 4k videos) but wasn't sure about buying it now as there is an expectation that a new model will be released. I guess the main problem is that Sony is going to through a hard time due to supply chain issues, so I wonder if this camera is still worth it in 2022 or there is another option that can be better at the moment. I really want to advance to the next step in photo quality, and that is of course DSLRs or mirrorless with interchangeable lenses. So I consider the A6400. But the prices on all those lenses really deter me. Especially when I can simply upgrade my camera to the very capable, although old now, Sony RX10iv. Which way would you recommend me to go at this point, as a travel/street photographer with ever growing artistic tendencies?
@MaartenHeilbron3 жыл бұрын
Try the Fujifilm X-E3, if you can still find one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maeTe4iqqZuaa6c Unless you want the long zoom the RX10 IV offers, in which case (as long as you don't mind the size) it's a terrific camera for travel, not so much street.

Thanks for the review. I love my RX10 iv. Do you know of a hack to eliminate the 20 minute limit on videos? I love the fantastic optics and the sound quality on videos is also great! In short I find this very close to an ideal camera for all around use especially when travelling

The closeup images this camera makes are also awesome. I treated myself to this camera with some inheritance money. I also have a Sony Alpha 700 and various decent lenses which I've loved using for 9 years. I've yet take a shot with the RX4 that the 700 would have done better with. A great camera and I love not lugging a rucksack full of lenses and stuff around. To answer the previous comment.. I only shoot in raw and yes it does shoot at 24fps in that mode, and for quite a few seconds too. Be careful though. I used that shooting the Tour de France recently and you end up with a hell of a lot of nearly identical images to work through!

I just bought this camera. I love taking pictures of wildlife, birds in particular. I am having trouble with my pictures being clear and sharp. It seems that the birds face is always out of focus and I can't get a clear/sharp shot, like your eagle photo (or other pictures I see on Instagram). In your opinion, what settings are key to have set when trying to capture clear/sharp pictures for birds/wildlife?

I would use continuous. Try using a smaller (F8) aperture or a smaller focus point - but if you have already tried those, I'm out of ideas.

Good video. I just finished a vacation using the Sony RX IV for the first time. I shoot baseball at major league parks and it came off quite good. Auto focus is tricky when shooting action and you have to be on top of always and continually checking that it stays in. It's also fast enough for night games. One question about Lightroom 5 if you can answer: Whenever I export my finished picture, it never shows up in the folder I designate it to. It goes to some unrelated folder and I have to search all the folders to find it. Any thoughts on that?

Merhaba, Bay Heilbron.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын

@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
If you use EFS, you'll need to touch the screen on the object you want in focus. It will happen more inside because the aperture is open so the depth of field is smaller. Or try wide or zone, which would look for focus areas all over the screen, not just one area.

Maarten Heilbron okay sir, btw, can you make a video to explain about the experiences differences from shooting with a camera with PASM mode dial and the Leica/Fuji like analog control with dedicated shutter speed dial and aperture ring, assuming every camera nowadays take good quality picture, because as someone who always shoot from a phone, I think it’s no much differences from shooting with a phone if I set auto on the camera, and it’s too computer like from using the PASM with 2 unlabelled spinning wheels, I wanted a camera with the traditional dedicated labelled dials, but then I found out if I put my eye on the viewfinder, it’s not much different, but that’s just my experience from trying in the camera store, not sure about if I use it for long term, so can you make a video to talk about this? I think I haven’t found a video that talk about this in details
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
@@NetvoTV That's an interesting request. I often start the exposure section of my Fujifilm reviews by discussing this topic - for instance, here in my review of the X-T30, the exposure section offers quite a detailed explanation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4iVpHetptOIr9E (9:10) In general, I prefer this approach, as it requires the photographer only to think - I want to control the aperture and make the adjustment, while the camera takes care of the rest. Then if you also want to control the shutter speed and/or the ISO, those can also be used in manual mode. I will say that the implementation is better on the X-H1 and X-T3 cameras, as they have more dedicated controls. If you'd like a more detailed video, let me know and I'll put it on the to-do list.
