Hi Mike, some great advice here. I also took the plunge about 1 month ago and brought the Sony RX10 IV. I love the versatility of the camera. I also have had a Nikon D300S for around 12 years now and used a Nikkor 70 - 200mm f2.8 with a 1.8x convertor using them for wildlife. Unfortunately the load was getting too heavy for me, both weighing just over 2Kg without a bag and tripod!! Not so enjoyable on a day out. So I traded in the Nikkor lens and convertor and brought the Sony - and I love it. I still use the Nikon camera along with Nikon PB-6 bellows for macro, but mostly at home or not to far away. The weight was putting me off - but now with the Sony I'm having a great time with excellent results. I love the fold out screen making low pic's of fauna much easier to set up. Though the menu style is very different I'm gradually getting used to it

Great review on this camera. I sold my Sony a900 FF camera, then moved to the lighter a77II APS-C camera with all the various and very expensive lens systems, and now just have my RX10IV and older RX100II. The image quality from the RX10IV is significantly better than what I was able to achieve in my two previous larger sensor cameras. The Zeiss 24-600 zoom is the sharpest lens I've ever owned. Recently I had a canvas wall print done at 1.5 metres wide x 1 metre high, all off the tiny 1" sensor! Admittedly I gave it a helping hand by processing it through Topaz Gigapixel which delivered a 1.6GB print file, but even at this very large size of 5 feet wide, you can see every fine detail in the shot. Incredible camera!!!

After viewing your video, I bought the camera. I sold my Sony 70-200 lens that I used on my A7R2 because it was so heavy and didn’t give me the range I needed to capture birds and other wildlife. I still use my A7R2 for macro, portraits, and low light situations, but the RX10 IV is perfect for trips to the zoo, sports, birds, and video.

Hi Shane, Thanks for watching and the comment. Have you sold off your Canon gear yet or are you holding out for Canon's answer to this beast of a camera? I had been waiting for Canon for a while to make an awesome G series to match. Each time they inch closer, Sony pulls way, way ahead. Cheers! Mike

Hi Mike, yes I sold the Canon, as much as I loved the camera it really wasn’t suitable for my needs now, with the Sony I can pack it in my motorcycle top box and go, capture stills and video with one camera and no extra lenses. Have to say I am more than delighted with the results. I’m sure Canon will bring something out equally as good but by then Sony will have brought out the Mk5 version and it will be way ahead of the pack again.

Fantastic video! I am 14 years old and bought my rx10iv at the end of last year. I was debating between it or the A7ii (a7iii didn’t come out yet) or maybe even the a7rii. I have an a6300 as well. I ended up going for the rx10iv and I love it except for the low light capabilities. My dad has a canon 1dx and after looking at his sport images shot at 6400- 25600 iso with little noise it makes me wish this could do better in low light. He was very impressed with the quality coming out of this camera. I think it is fantastic for bird photography since a good telephoto lens for a full frame Sony is $1000-$12000! The reach this camera has is just insane for the price and quality when compared to those cheap bridge cameras made by companies like Nikon. I will be probably renting the a7riii and 16-35 2.8 GM for a trip where I hope to do lots of landscape photography which will be printed very large. Overall I can not agree with you any more that this camera is fantastic. I really think interchangeable lens cameras are over rated especially for consumers when most of them never step away from the kit lens. The biggest misconception with this camera is that it is “compact. “ while it is not very big, it is just a hair lighter than an a7 series or a9 camera with a lens such as the 16-35 GM. I was surprised how heavy and well built feeling it is when I opened up the box. Anyways, nice work on the review.
@MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
Eli, Thanks for the comment and your thoughts. The 1" sensor is never going to match a full frame in low light. The differences in imaging sensor size are significant in comparison. The RX10IV is also good for landscape photography. You can stitch the images and use a tripod in a cinch to pull out more resolution. But for single shot resolution, your A7RIII and 16-35mm combo is going to win easily. Just don't forget to rent some filters for that 82mm thread lens. -Mike

I'm just getting my first decent tripod this week (Manfrotto 546B tripod legs and 502A head) and am looking to getting some nice indoor shots as well as using it for travel. As a user of other Sony systems (HDR Camcorder and Action Cam) much of it all fits together at a minimum with the PlayMemories Home suite. I really like your knowledgeable but laid-back presentation style and have subscribed. Here's hoping you hit your target! All the best, Rob in Switzerland.

Hi Rob! Thanks for watching, the comment and the sub! I've never thought about my style for the channel, but I guess you're right! I make generally laid back presentation style videos mostly when talking about tech and cameras. That tripod/head combination from Manfrotto sounds really solid. Too much for myself when traveling for fun, but you must be doing some pro work with the RX10 IV and am happy that it is exceeding your expectations as it has mine. Play Memories home is pretty surprisingly decent if you stick in the ecosystem. I'll admit that with all my other cameras, and workflow with DXO and Lightroom, I haven't been using it as much, eventhough I should now that I must have at least half a dozen Sony Playmemories Home compatible cameras and camcorders still. Crossing fingers for 1,000 soon, even if I don't hit the Feb 20th deadline. Happy New Year! Mike

Thanks for the review. The #Sony #RX10M4 is the #King of #Bridge #Superzoom #Cameras. It rules them all, yet expensive. A bridge with 1" sensor, or a 1.5" Sensor (or a 1.5" multi aspect sensor like the #LX100, why not?) is a good compromise. I have the #90D, the #SL2 and the #SX530HS.... My first digital bridge camera was the #SX530HS... it's 1/2.3-inch sensor but you get a lot from it than a smartphone. The market is shrinking... Smartphones are pretty advanced today, good for people who want to shoot decent photos and for people you want to share on social medias for "quick views and likes"... This is what most people do today,... printing is rare, but a lot of social medias. For social medias, it's mainly smartphone: then difficult to tell the difference between 4k and 1080p, a photo shooted with an 1" sensor or #M43, #APSC, maybe with a #FullFrame,... People on social medias don't really pay attention to details... They look quickly, like and/or comment, Scroll down Some like without even really look... But smartphones can't replace camera and the glass (optics) for now... How many cameras you have to add to a cellphone to really compete a digital camera? I have a #Samsung #Galaxy smartphone, its awesome, this makes me thinking what Samsung could deliver if they did not exit the digital camera market. The #NX1 was an amazing #APSC. People will come back a bit to digital cameras, at least for advanced compacts, beginner mirrorless , when they are tired of selfies. Digital camera companies are learning as well, the camera apps are getting better and better.... #Zeiss understands the concept, #ZX1: #Shoot + #Edit in camera (app or #Lightroom) and #Share =>>> as quick as possible!!! Bridge superzoom cameras are a good option for people who want to learn photography without putting too much money on gears. Bridge cameras offer DSLR / Mirrorless like functionalities. Lessons learned with them help when you upgrade to a bigger camera, bigger sensor, ... that was my case when I switch to an #APSC. The 1" sensor bridge cameras are awesome... Sony / Nikon / Panasonic Lumix / Leica : 1.- Waiting to see what #Sony #SonyAlpha will deliver us with a #RX10MV, but hope the screen will be a fully articulated one. Don't know if they have plan for a new menu system?!?! Sony should probably work silently and quietly on their menu system and make heads spin with an update, when people are not expecting the big change. 2.- Hope #Canon with add built-in EVF in the next #G3X, the #PowershotG3XMII, why not a #CanonEOSRP body like? 3.- #Nikon should bring back the #DL24-500, the specs were amazing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4atfZKAqt6ig5I 4.- I guess #Panasonic #Lumix will upgrade the popular #FZ2500 / #FZ2000 => #FZ2500MII / #FZ2000MII => The famous Dad Cam!! 5.- Owners of #FZ1000MII and #LeicaVLux5 / #VLux5 are happy. #PanasonicLumix #FZ2500M2 / #FZ2000M2 = #G95 / #G90 with fixed lens? Bridge Hybrid Superzoom for Videos ans Stills like those are more that important. Good Luck. instagram.com/paulginoulysse/ :) ;)

Funny. I'm not opposed to background music, just didn't feel a need. I've definitely made the mistake before but I was recording live and couldn't remove it. The Red soft shutter button is a stick on. No, it has never come off - the screw in ones I *always* lose. I was tired of throwing money down the drain, even if I have a bunch of cheap ones lying around. Not saying you can't lose it, just that I never have. And I have it on 3 cameras. Also, if it does come off, I find that it sticks to whatever rubbed it off - in one case it was a really tight fitting bag divider.

Mike, just purchased the Song A7iii with Sony 35 1.4 lens and am wondering if this isn't a better option. I was trying to get the option for super bokeh that the 1.4 offers, but for maximum shooting flexibility, this may be better. Thoughts? Had the RX10 mark 1 with previous employer and really liked its versatility. I realize this is MUCH better in MANY ways than that was.
@MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, Of course you are going to blow away the RX10 IV at 35mm equivalent with the full frame sensor and the 1.4 - there is simply no contest. You didn't need to get the A7III to achieve that, but since the a7III is sooo good, why not? I approve of your choice! Its a serious choice Pros will make and choose all day. But your combination is also $3500! A7III = $2000 ( amzn.to/2kCnI67 ) Sony 35mm Zeiss Distagon = $1500 ( amzn.to/2J1q7Gl ) I have the cheaper, but comparable Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens ( amzn.to/2LLXcUo ). Here is a sample I shot with an APS-C Sony camera: instagram.com/p/BjPdWA5AY3A/?taken-by=mikemuphotography I love that lens and the bokeh achieved, but I don't casually bring it out with me since its big, heavy, and one focal length only. Is what you're shooting going to *really* benefit that much more from the full frame and 35mm 1.4? It might at certain distances that are relatively close to you. Objects that are further away (think like a basketball court length) aren't going to get much of any bokeh effect or benefit. Still if you shoot primarily at 35mm, I'd consider the RX1 RII ( amzn.to/2L9gQsa ). Focus isn't as fast, forget the video, but its the master of resolution at 35mm in a package you can fit in a jacket pocket. For me, I prefer to carry my Fuji X100F ( amzn.to/2J3311S ) for my 35mm shooting needs as its such a pleasure to shoot with. -Mike

What a great video. Informative and thoughtful. I'm an older woman who has been a hobbyist for many years and have extremely arthritic hands. I sold all of my Canon gear last year and went with Fuji. I have the 35mm, 16mm, 55-200, 60mm and the beastly 50-140mm. I really wanted the 100-400 (I love bird and wildlife photography) but just couldn't justify the weight. I've been going back and forth between the 100-400 and the Sony rx10 IV. You've convinced me. Now, though, I have a question. I love my Fuji colors and sharpness but think I should be able to let a couple of lenses go. I like wildlife, macro, and some portraiture. What would be your thoughts on what to keep and what to let someone else appreciate? Thank so kindly for taking your time if you're able. And anyone else who has thoughts on this I'm open to them!
@MikeMu5 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl, Thank you very much! I also love Fuji, but never made the jump to an all Fuji system and instead got myself a Fuji X100F which I've shot tens of thousands of pictures with. So I love the Fuji style, interface, colors, jpg rendering. But I have just about no experience with the lenses you own, so keep that in mind. First, if possible, I'd advise you to wait before you sell off any of your Fuji lenses. I say this because you must have given a lot of thought into acquiring them, and they are all fantastic lenses from what I've read. At this point I'm not sure Fuji makes any bad lenses now, though, just good and better lenses - all relatively affordable compared to the competition and value. After you get the Sony RX10IV you will probably start to figure out which lens(es) you'll keep with you in your pack and use, and which you'd not bring for your next trip out to the wild. Of course the bright glass is heavy. Maybe you might just end up selling it all after you've used the RX10IV. The one(s) you end up leaving at home most can go to a happy home. But based on what you said about loving wildlife, macro and portrait I'd be inclined to keep the 60mm macro because its also a good portrait lens. I'd also keep the 35mm 1.4 as its truly is one of the best lenses for the system. And then the 50-140mm 2.8, also an amazing lens with Weather Resistance good outdoors and for portraits. Of course its heavy. So from the list I'd probably let go of the 55-200mm. Obviously a great lens but you had wanted more reach with the 100-400mm. Its mostly covered by the 50-140mm which is a better lens. I hope this helps! -Mike

Sounds like a great all-in-one camera for just about everything! By the way, have you used the a9? I have one and wondered if you have used it before, if so what are your views are on the AF capability of the two? Thanks for the review of this camera. Cheers.
@MikeMu5 жыл бұрын
I have used the a9 briefly outdoors from a fellow peer photographer in the city, in late afternoon light. The a9 is truly a beast when it comes to AF. I haven't felt this way about a camera since I went from a 10D to a 1D Mark II back in early 2000s. I feel the overall experience of shooting with the a9 is what you'd expect for something that costs at least twice as much (not considering the cost of the lens, which in my case was another $2-3K). So the Rx10IV can't really compare with AF tracking in many scenarios the a9 was designed for (sports, action). I imagine the a9 is going to be substantially better in less than well lit situations where the RX10IV struggles - and I'm imagining a scenario where you're shooting a local soccer game around dusk that is void of professional lights. But I have not tried both together in that scenario to know just how much better the a9 fares. So for pro stuff, a9. I think a big con is that you can't hold focus while zooming with the RX10IV. That pretty much kills it for serious pro work. Soccer mom stuff, RX10IV is perfectly fine. You'll get a lot of could have been better shots if you used an a9 and knew how to handle the camera. The Rx10IV will track right up to I'd say 15 minutes past sunset here in Los Angeles in the Summer (it stays pretty bright here).

If it had the screen I would agree this camera is the best. I won't be using stone age screen tech for free let alone what this camera costs.

Hello, how to take the best sports pictures at night under average lighting, without having blurry images, is in AF C, AF S, or AF, ....
@MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
Night sports is challenging for any camera, except for maybe the high end $4k+ systems capable of shooting at 1/1000 shutterspeed even at night sports. Not sure what average light is for you, but its probably really dark still. Best bet is higher ISO - try 3200+ iso; maybe higher (but it will be more grainy/noisy). Maybe even 6400iso. AF-C AF Area Wide (starting out) AF Center or flexible spot if you are after that one subject in middle of frame. Shutter speed shorter than 1/500. You might not be able to accomplish this unless at a professional venue. If you get a chance, share some of your results or fails at previous shoots and I can tell you what's going on.

Good review but I would have stressed the phase focusing technology since it's main competition uses contrast focus.
@MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl, That's a great point for us more technical people. The main competition in this market was from Panasonic. They would argue that their enhanced contrast focus (DFD) system is more accurate and can be just as fast for photos and fine tuned to be as fast and more accurate than phase technology. So.. I just left it as fastest autofocus at this time.

@@MikeMu I suspect that Sony won't launch a new version of the RX10 until one of the other manufacturers puts out a super-zoom that pushes it firmly off its perch as the most versatile camera in this group. The price, at least here in the UK, is significantly down from its launch price (£1300 compared to £1800) but has fluctuated quite a bit with supply being patchy.
@MikeMu Жыл бұрын
@@ColinMill1 Yes. And also it looks as though Sony is not collaborating much with Zeiss anymore - so a new lens may need to be developed too. They seem to be focusing on vlogging stuff for some reason and that is definitely one thing this is not going to be great at.

Been thinking about this for airshows since I got rid of my Nikon d4 and 150-600 tamron. I was using it so little it didn’t make sense holding onto it. Plus having to haul it around was a work out. What do you think about the image quality and the AF on fast moving subjects?
@MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
I've never shot professionally at an air show, just as a spectator and back then I brought a 50-500mm Sigma (aka Bigma) so I'm not as serious as you when it comes to these. So take what I say with that in mind. Image Quality is excellent (obviously). AF is also super, won't have problems at most air shows. It has the AF system from Sony's a9 ( amzn.to/2Ged8e3 ) which is the best on the mirrorless side of things as far as the processing is concerned. I think where you may have issue is zooming fast from one range to the other; a limitation of the lens design. It is all electronically controlled, so you are limited by the available speeds; and the fast setting for zoom, is not fast enough. You also can't really zoom, focus, and shoot burst at the same time the way you can with your Nikon combo. So if something is flying really fast right at you and you want to burst capture while keeping a really tight frame (as much as possible), its not going to happen. You'll probably get some good shots, spot on AF, but at the same focal length. If you don't normally zoom as you shoot faster FPS, things will work out just fine.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any battery grip made for the RX10 series. But if you want extended shooting, a dummy battery can be used to power the unit up - and of course a more riskier option is through the USB port. Handling wise I've heard of some using a combination of L plate, or cages. I've found all that too cumbersome for my needs and just carry some extra batteries.

I love this concept, but I am just debating if I should wait for the next model. I would hate to spend the money on this one, and then a few months later the Mk. V comes out. I do most of my work with the RX100 as far as video. I think this would be the best of both worlds, and I could possibly sell all of my Nikon gear! I have some more thinking to do, if you have any suggestions, or want to chime in on how long you might think it will take for there to be a Mk.V. Please let me know you opinion :D Anyways, like I said, awesome video :D

Hi Corey, Thanks! Personally, I think it'll be late 2019 before a 'Mark V' gets released, and who knows how much more that might end up costing. I'm not quite understanding your question. Technically in perfect lab controlled conditions, it'd be infinity but the resolution would get worse the further out you'd want to see. It will bring objects in view about 12 times closer. So... if you're looking at the moon with your own eyes which is 384472282 meters away from earth, and instead you jumped on a space rocket and got 32039356 meters away and looked again. @MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis, Basically you 'trick' Adobe Premiere by substituting the files of the exact same name with the 4K versions. So I'd do all the edits with the proxy low resolution files which I keep in the edit folder. And then when I'm ready to produce, I point Premiere to the 4k version either by renaming the previous folder so Premiere cannot find it and asks you to point out where the files are / or just exchange the proxy files with the 4k version of the files. Matt Who is Matt Johnson created a general video for Premiere on this. No, its not with this particular camera's proxy files but he goes over Proxy in general and provides some 'tools' for you to do what he does for giving up your email address: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5Obh6eQjZtljqM Cheers, Mike

Mike Mu so fixed lens is not big deal as first camera? And they say Sony camera has no soul, x100f is fun and should be the one,true?
@MikeMu6 жыл бұрын
Tough to say as I started out in the 90s with a prime lens, and film camera to learn photography and kept with the single focal length for years. The RX10 IV is definitely more technology driven, but it has an aperture control ring, and EV comp dial which I use a lot of even on my X100F ( amzn.to/2EcZADw ). Say with my a6500 ( amzn.to/2C62zrl ), I'd never have brought such a long focal length lens. And if I did, I'd have to change lenses. With the X100F, I'm stuck at a very nice 35mm FOV equivalent. Unless I add on the wide ( amzn.to/2BjPKNd ) and the tele ( amzn.to/2C62q7h ) But then, no 4k video. But this almost forces you to be more creative to get better shots, so you may end up being a better photographer as a result and the X100F is significantly smaller and lighter than the RX10 IV, but also not weather sealed. So as much fun the X100F is to use day-to-day, the RX10IV is still the ONE I'd choose if I had to choose one. I will get shots none of my other cameras can take in the least amount of time. This is especially true if I'm traveling on a once-in-a-lifetime trip - Get the RX10IV.
