Small package, big learning curve! I am enjoying the extended zoom range compared to the Mark III , and clients were especially impressed with the 4K Video quality. 4K makes the VII quite a hand-warmer, too! I liked your fast pace video and did a lot of pause and repeat for what was especially interesting.

Thanks for another outstanding review Maarten. I have a RX100 M6 and watched your review of it last year. I learned more from your 20 minute review than in 4 weeks of self-tutoring on the camera. When I saw this review I was anxious to see if I could learn more and determine if the M7 was worth upgrading to. You delivered again. I have learned even more about the M6/M7 (like the “tall” panoramic options) and decided the M7 upgrades would not be worth it for me. Thanks again for your hard work on these reviews. I hope you have a wonderful New Year.

@@MaartenHeilbron Figured you may say that heh. Well, a few reasons.#1 When the 8 came out, youtube amd GP forums had thousands of problems/issues. Not charging,screen freezing,overheats,firmware wont load ect ect. So quality worries me.#2 I had a 7 that was a lemon, I had to return it ( I was told my problem was 1 in a million rare) #3 1/2 of the "pro" review people on youtube say quality is garbage, small sensor ,TERRIBLE low light ect ect. As many horrible reviews as good. #4 Really the 8 isnt new, all the same inside parts.More like a 7 Vserion 2.0. #5 I would like to take some stills,It has no flash. I like the size (or lack of it) SOME reviews are great. I dont need a cam as tough as a gopro. I need that size-ish,MUST have good stable tech (GP 7 level at least or 8) I like the DJI Pocket ..but it has a few flaws...the new version will be nice I am sure.A few MFG have copied the DJI pocket and will be out soon..so they say. Something like a Cannon ELF point and shoot with at least 1080p 60,,hypersmooth is all I need 12+MP....Stabil tech on all other camers (I have found) are terrible.....I suspect in 1-2 years ,EVERYONE will copy GP8 hypersmooth..as of now I can find what I want lol

Very informative. I've watched a LOT of videos about this camera and this is the first one I've seen that really provided a look at the settings/menus in such detail. I've been on the fence but I think you just helped me decide. I consider myself an above average hobbyist in skill level. I have a DSLR that I love and have learned a lot with but I find myself limited the size, weight, and sheer amount of gear to lug around (even when I limit myself to maybe my two favorite lenses). Recently went to House of Mouse with family for a day and thought I'd pick up a simple point and shoot that would be a step above my cell phone. By the way, while on that trip I took one of my favorite pictures ever of my cousin and her toddler so I do think great pictures can be taken with a cell phone, I can only imagine what that same picture could have been like with a better camera/lens. Imagine my surprise when I realized the point and shoot market has changed considerably (as in nearly non-existant). My naive self thought I'd be able to run into a Best Buy the day before our visit and grab something decent off the shelf. I always thought there would be a market for a good point and shoot with great manual features. Thus, my trip down the rabbit hole over the past few months while trying to find out if there are any great compact cameras out there. I'm surprised Sony has apparently discontinued this line and can't believe I'm about to shell out this type of money for a design that is five years old but I kept hearing great things and now you've answered quite a few of the questions that I still had. Thanks so much for the great content!

Always nice to know that viewers appreciate my detailed and hands-on approach to camera reviews. Thanks for taking the time to comment. While the camera is not a "new" model, most of its features are current - with the posisbnle exception of focus, as that's the area where Sony has improved on higher end/larger models.

I recently wanted to buy a new RX100 after being very happy for many years with the M1. Since the M7 is out some years now, I hoped to wait for a successor to the M7 but it seems there won't be a M8/VIII... is the 4 year old camera still worth 1200? How is its performance at night compared to modern smartphones? And: I was surprisingly happy with the results of star-photography with the RX100 M1, but I read that the newer models are worse because of a different lens settings - can that be true?
@MaartenHeilbron8 ай бұрын
On other new cameras Sony has mostly improved focus, otherwise, I think it remains a good size for its size. It's not worse, it's just different. I think that the results for star photography would be improved - but have you read otherwise?

I’m confused, but that’s my problem. I’m lucky enough to have the Ricoh GRIII and use it primarily for street. It’s a premium compact. But, I want a pocketable camera with a bit of zoom, and this seems to tick all the boxes. Viewfinder and flash are important to me, both of which the Ricoh does not have. And also, the Ricoh is a fixed lens camera. (I was looking at the GRIII X, but that is locked in at 40mm).I would also use the Sony for street. The problem I have is am I looking at the right camera to fit my requirements? Or am I wide off the beaten track? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Hi, is the aperture auto controlled by zoom. I am unable to control the aperture manually and it increases while zooming.
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
To an extent, the zoom does control the aperture. Even in manual aperture, the iris will close as you zoom in, as this is a ramped lens. Demonstrated in this video at about 13:30.

Hi Maarten, I always enjoy your videos. I'm about to take the plunge on purchasing a premium compact travel camera and have been comparing models similar to the RX100. Do you know of an equivalent model in the Panasonic line? Also at half the price, is it worthwhile to buy the RX100 v over the RX100 vii? Thanks again for making such informative and enjoyable videos.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I'd take the V over the VII to save some money. Not as familiar with the equivalent Panasonic models, but the GX85 is a likely candidate.

Does it need a ND filter for outside video? Which ND filter do you recommend
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Unless you are happy with a very small aperture or a short shutter duration, yes. Three to five stops should do it, I don't recommend variable.

Hi that was a very informative video cheers but I have a question about the RX100. I just brought the RX100 #4 as it was a good special at my local camera shop. At the moment I'm shooting in raw / jpg. But when I connect my camera to my laptop I'm getting two different photos and my programs don't work with raw am I best to go to fine or extra fine as there is no jpeg by itself thanks.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I'm not sure which software you are using, but there are many (some free) that do support the Sony RAW format - including the desktop version of Sony's Imagining Edge software (free download). However, if you are going to forgo RAW, use the extra fine setting but do be more careful about white balance, colour profile and exposure as it will be more difficult to change them from a JPEG file.

Cheers for the great vid Maarten! I recently brought this camera and was wondering if you know how to turn off the image mirroring in selfie mode? When you take a picture as a selfie with the LCD screen flipped up, the images come out reversed. Any idea on how to turn this off? Thank you!
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
The picture shows the correct (not mirror) image. Only the viewfinder image is mirrored while you're taking the picture. This actually helps you - otherwise everything will seem as if it's on the wrong side of the screen, making it hard to compose the shot. The self-portrait timer will turn the selfie countdown off, but there is no way to turn off the mirroring.

Hi Maarten! Great review as always! I want to know if this would be a good shooter for Panorama shots. I do a lot of walking and like to do them on the fly. I understand that a larger sensor camera may be better and then do my stitching in "post production" but I want to hear your take on that first. Or alternatively, if you can tell me if you know of any great full frame or APSC or Four Thirds or one inches that are worth looking into I would be grateful. Thanks so very much! Jerry Eisner PS.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
If you are planning to stitch panoramas to create large scale prints, go full frame. This is not the right camera for that job. Any inexpensive full frame with a good prime lens is a better choice.

Maarten Heilbron Thsnk you! great answer!If I may ask 2 more questions, do you have any hints on the type / brand of pano head / tripod gear I would need to attach to my camera that is a Best Buy in terms of ease of use and quality build? Compare on what basis? They are too different. This is great for a small pocket camera. The A6000 with a larger sensor and interchangeable lenses is in another class, and is much older.

Wow, that was a great review and it helped me out on several functions that I was still struggling with. I have two questions if you don't mind. Is there anything specific that I need to be careful of in selecting a power bank to connect to the RX100M7 for times when all my extra BX1's are exhausted (voltage, amperage etc.). secondly have you played with the "my Dial" custom settings? I'm still a bit confused on that. Have you covered that in any other videos? Thanks again for a super review.
@MaartenHeilbron3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words. Any USB-C power bank with PD (power delivery) will work. I didn't have much time with this camera (Sony needed to send it to other reviewers) and didn't get the chance to explore the custom settings in more detail.

How long can this camera last before newer iPhone take over it hence it make the camera might be a waste purchase?

Clearly that depends on your needs. If you want to manually control your exposure and/or focus; if you prefer to shoot with a viewfinder; if you want high quality RAW files, then maybe never.

Hey Maarten, new subscriber sent over from Austin McConnell. Love your straight to the point and honest video style showing true expertise. I focus a lot on photography of abandoned buildings, making my current phone camera insufficient for most shots. What low light camera would you recommend for that type of shot? Thank you.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
I would recommend any camera. It's the lens (go for a wide angle prime with a large (F2.8) aperture). But also consider a tripod - both of these will provide much better results than using a high ISO in low light.

Hi Maarten! Recently got recommended your channel by austinmcconnell - feel like I've found a treasure trove! Have you tried any of the rx10s? I purchased the rx10iv a while back because of its even greater zoom range (up to 400!) but occasionally catch myself glancing enviously at rx100s due to their compactness and convenience. Could you compare?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words - I've also thanked Austin, I appreciate his support. I have reviewed the RX10 series: M IV kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3jUlpiwrtqcnMk M III kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3KTpXadi9alnrs M II kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJe0p6KAe52XbK8 The difference between the RX10 and RX100 models is primarily the body style and lens. The rest is the difference between the Sony firmware development at the time of release. However, it's an interesting question. Let me see if Sony will lend me both to do a side by side.

Great review! I really want one of these. I am lazy and am tired of hauling around a bunch of stuff. A few years ago I went to MFT to reduce the size of the stuff I carry with me. I mostly just photograph family and travel these days. Then I got a superzoom which often could replace my larger lenses in decent light. On a recent trip to New Zealand I found myself using the superzoom more than anything in good light. Seems like one of these can almost do it all. Not the longest lens but long enough for most shots. My big sticking point is the price. Also don’t want to have to learn Sony menus. Did I mention that I am lazy? Anyway do you think it’s worth the $1300 USD?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. If you're lazy, it's probably worth it. As for the menus, after you make a few adjustments (as I did in the video) you can leave the auto settings and be assured of success.
