In this video, 2 similar, yet quite different 1" cameras are reviewed and compared in terms of specs, features, and most importantly photo and video quality, with tons of examples in all types of situations. You will be able to decide by the end of the video which one is the clear winner!
Should you decide to buy the Sony, using the link below helps the channel as it offers me a small commission but doesn't cost you anything. The Canon G5Xii is discontinued but I recommend you shop Ebay if you're interested or other second hand matketplaces.

Yes, absolutely, I recommend the RX100-7, or the RX100-5a. I use my P&S cameras like a replacement DSLR or mirrorless camera, except that I can put it it my pocket. I had a Canon Powershot S100 and the Panasonic Lumix ZS50, and both failed after 2 years of hard use, and the companies to repair it, wanted more than half the cost of a new camera, not worth it. I bought the RX100-7 in 2020 and it is still going strong today. To me the RX100-7 was worth every penny. The only shortcoming that I can think off for the RX100-7 is that battery life, if you plan extensive use of it for either videos or photos be sure to have extra batteries, because it is a power hog. BTW a word of caution & warning for you Panasonic camera users, if you ever need service for your camera ie repair, Panasonic has a contractor in the US, and they are awful to deal with, so caveat emptor.

I love your channel, when I was doing some research on what camera to buy for just documenting my life. I came to realize that camcorders are the BEST option for people who just want to hit record and not have to worry about anything. I ended up getting the Panasonic 981k and I absolutely love it. The image quality is great (if there Is enough light) and it easy to use.

It will be interesting to see exactly what happens with the point & shoot category as smart phones continue to see improvements and capture market share. Questions are being asked of all manufacturers as to whether you'll see continued innovation. Even old point and shoot cameras can yield surprising results given the Denoise, sharpening and Jpeg artifact repairs that can be made in post processing. I am amazed by the results I got with my old A720IS now that I look at the images several years later. Simple denoising saved a lot of questionable results. Regardless of the innovations, the features and the technical quality, the technology still doesn't know how to aim the camera.

Thats a good point -in addition with the viral popularity of some point and shoots like the Fuji X100VI, I think manufacturers might start to re-examine the fact that some people like the experience of using a camera (for the cool effect or whatever other reason) and the category will start to grow again. Much like vinyl records made a comeback. Who woulda thought after all the digital music and streaming that people would play big records any more? So you never know!

There is a textured rubber grip for the RX100 called AG-R2 directly from Sony which is round about 10 bucks. You simply stick it on and it improves the handling massively. I never understood why Sony delivers the camera without it.

Because of your channel I have ended up buying both an RX100 vii and a Nikon P1000 in the past 2 months! You are not good for my bank balance! As a side note I already had an RX100 ii and an RX1 from when I bought them when they were new around 10 years ago. Both cameras are still going strong. The RX100 ii with a full size flash on the hotshoe is a sight to behold! Back then at the time I wanted to take the best quality pictures of my new family so made the investment and I am so glad I did. Smartphones even to this day just do not compare. I have never felt the need to upgrade but with these new 2 additional cameras I thought I would get them while I can before they disappear forever. They may just be the last 2 cameras I ever buy. I’m from the UK but if I ever make it on holiday to New York I will be sure to visit the corner of 1st and 73rd to take a photo of the famous street signs! Anyway keep up the great videos, they are always an entertaining watch :) I really appreciate the effort you put into them. All the best.

Haha! Great comment. Well, I wish I was getting a commission or some sort from either Sony or Nikon based on what you spend but oh well! That RX100ii with a full size flash must be very interesting to see. I am actually entertaining of doing a video on the original RX100 (just got my hands on one) to see how much improvement there has been with the current model. If Sony does actually come out with a successor to these RX models, I do think it will be the RX1 due to the Fuji x100 craze! And for sure, if you ever make it to NY let me know and I'll give you a tour of the 1st and 73rd corner and get you a coffee! Thanks again for your uplifting words.

@mulreid
@mulreid 5 ай бұрын
@michelezanolla7154 I have both and advise the upgrade. The autofocus on the my vii is a massive improvement and also the longer 200mm reach. I still have the mkii however as it has unique features such as the hotshoe (e.g for an external mic or flash) and an f1.8 lens for close portrait shots. FYI I bought the mkii when the mkiii had just come out and I didn’t care for the viewfinder and shorter focal length lens. For me it was a downgrade and not as versatile and so in the same way the VA version with the same lens does not tempt me. Hope this helps.

I have a professional camera with lenses, etc. But I'm also interested in a camera that can be with me all the time. My hesitation is between the two cameras shown in your excellent video. But while watching I wondered. Is there an advantage to the cameras shown in the video, compared to the high-quality cameras found on good phones (for example, S24 ultra, I have)? The good smart phone camares also achieve good resolution, can also shoot RAW, have optical zoom up to X5. And the main advantage of cameras on a smartphone is that it is always with me.....

@@uchiha5531 Thank you for the quick answer. Could you perhaps elaborate on the advantages of the digicam (assuming it's a good compact camera like the Sony ZV1 Mark II or G7x Mark III? Today, even when I shoot from my phone, I shoot in the professional option in RAW and play with the parameters such as exposure, speed, WB, etc. I usually use autofocus but do adjust where to focus. I assume that the ability to control the parameters is better and more convenient in a digicam, but is that also in terms of the final result?? In the end, is there a significant change if I compare two shots in RAW??

I can't believe a camera in RV100's price range doesn't have a way to use a wireless flash, using a hot shoe or 3.5 mm adapter. It would be a great backup when doing studio or location photography. If it did, I would have one by now.

@techtoremember8096
@techtoremember8096 Ай бұрын
Well, it depends on the size of your pocket. Even though these cameras are technically pocketable, you may want to think twice because lint from your pocket could get into the lens mechanism and if you accidentally bump into something that could affect the camera. But if you do want to put it in your pocket they definitely can fit . I would say if you are wearing a tight pair of jeans with a small pocket then it may be harder

Sony is better, sharper, faster focus, greater zoom but Canon has that gorgeous color science nobody else can touch. Its the one reason my street camera is still a 5D (Mark I or Classic as it's been retroactively called). Only 12MP, no dynamic range to speak of but ah! The colors it can produce.❤

YMMV - I have larger hands, and have owned both cameras. I sold the Sony as even with several different grips it couldn't match the comfort of the Canon. Sony actually made my hands cramp if held for an extended period. Great comparison. I actually got a RX100 VII at the start of May because my sister's graduation is in July and we haven't had a family point and shoot cam since the mid to late 2000s and also I thought with some research it'd be the best entry into concert photography without hopefully having many issues with taking it to gigs and such. I do have a question though as you mentioned it causing 1080p and not 4k on other modes (on the canon), does the movie button work perfect on any mode for the Sony*? I always change the top dial to the movie one but probably lose time going from my default shutter priority to that. I've got some great shots in the last month with the RX100 VII too. A perhaps once in a lifetime opportunity to get some photos of Keanu Reeves playing with his band

Yes the Sony button works properly Whatever mode you set in the menu , it will shoot (4k or 1080p) when you press record regardless what mode the PASM dial is in Canon cameras don’t behave that way- Even if you set the video to be 4k in the video menu - if you press record in any photo mode on the top dial- you’ll only get HD Takes some getting used to and doesn’t make sense to me but that’s how it works !! @techtoremember8096

The specs of the VA are better for sure for low light, but for me I think the extra reach is more important. Unless you are taking low light shots more than 50% of the time, I don't think the nominal difference is worth it. Let's put it this way, yes the VA is a bit better in low light but the zoom on the VII is way better than the VA! But it sounds like that is what you primarily shoot is low light in which case you may be better off with the VA model.

Hard to tell a difference between these cameras and a recent smartphone.. I do see a dramatic difference using FF camera, but maybe it's youtube compression ... Video out of them often looks really bad, worse than an iphone - more shaky / blown out highlights. Was debating for a while if to get one of those, but it really doesn't look like it's worth it. Better to get an asp-c sony camera, if you know you are shooting something today, or even one of the cheap older sony FFs with a prime 1.8 lens
@techtoremember8096
@techtoremember8096 2 ай бұрын
The difference comes down to the flexibility of a longer zoom. The physics and small lens on a cell phone still do not allow a good long zoom without digital assistance. Most cell phones also still do not have 1" sensors so the dynamic range will be better on these 1" sensor cameras. For quick snapshots and the convenience of using your phone, definitely, that's why these smaller cameras are dying out. But there are some folks who see the value in having "something more" than a phone with a stronger optical zoom but don't want to carry around a full frame mirrorless setup.

In my country the Sony Rx100 vii is just short of $400usd more than the Canon G5x mkii at its original retail price, it only makes sense it has better autofocus and better imaging. Canon has better user experience, it has touch screen control, aperture ring at the front of the camera, an exposure dial and better feel/ grip. $400 more for better autofocus on a compact camera with only slightly better sharpness, is it really worth it in 2024😂 It does zoom to 200 mm but again is it worth it on a compact camera? Canon is never going to release another compact camera again, this is almost a known fact. The current ones they’re still selling will probably be discontinued in another couple of years. It’s looking like Canon is going towards the route of low end APSC like the R100 & R50 to replace their compact cameras.

I just sold my rx100 mk3.. it had the faster lens.. Side by side it matched my iPhone 14 Pro in good light so it begged the question.. why bother with a “real” camera when smart phone snaps just work? That said I love photography and I am considering the mark7 but I just have that niggle that my smart phone would be the better option (now I have a 15 pro).

HI there To answer your question, its really because of the zoom. While they both can take great pictures at wide angle, having a larger lens, more glass, retractable lens with an optical zoom, still beats all cell phones in zoom quality and reach.
@DJCJ999
@DJCJ999 Ай бұрын
@@techtoremember8096 yeah the reach is where they stand apart.. smart phones look “ok” but once you start to crop, all the tricks are shown up and the images fall apart. I did think that my rx looked better once the images had been processed in lightroom but that’s an extra stage that the iPhone didn’t need (although further editing did yield ever better results). What compact camera, in your option is the best pocketable compact? I also have m4/3 lenses so even thought about slapping a prime on a older pen body?
@techtoremember8096
@techtoremember8096 Ай бұрын
I still say the RX100VII is the best compact. I like the VF is there if you want it, still very good optics on the lens and a very nice zoom range out to 200mm! You can certainly use a 4/3 camera but of course, you have a bigger slightly heavier camera that will probably not fit in your pocket any more!!

I have to say, Sony does have the focus that Canon lacks, but I think Canon is trying to address that with upcoming models. They seem to be putting a lot of their eggs in the R1 basket and have a lot riding on that camera and they have neglected almost everything else. Nikon seems to have dropped back its a match race between Sony and Canon. I have a feeling the Nikon Z9H is going to come out strong (IF it comes out, havent heard much about it, maybe they are working out the details in the lab) We'll see, if anyone knows anything about the Z9H comment here, not even sure if its official. Its an exciting year for mirrorless, no so much for the point and shoot.

Sony pics seem to pop a bit more, there is no comparison in video, Sony wins hands down. There is also more range and a much better auto-focus. The biggest issue with Sony is the price. It costs almost as much as a full frame A7C! I enjoyed the comparison, please keep them coming

It really should win consider how much more you pay for it😂 it only makes sense. When it comes to user interface canon is better though, with touch screen, front aperture dial and extra exposure ring.

Sony has a fumbling menu tht is hard to deal with unless you had a previous Sony. Its not natural at all. Also the cameras ergonomics leave much to be desired.

The rx100 reverses the image when the screen is tilted up 180 degrees. Did you really test the camera?

What I said in the video was that the Sony logo was reversed not the picture (and it was a joke)--if you watched the entire video you would see that I had it in my hands multiple times and had tons of photo and video examples.

Hello there I’m a subscriber just wondering if you can help me with a camcorder question . I’m using action cameras for most of my videos but I will like to get a camcorder with zoom capability’s which one would be your #1 choice( good stabilization)
@techtoremember8096

Hello, and thanks for being a subscriber!- There are quite a few options. I did a review of the Panasonic XF1 which I really liked. The quality is improved from the 981/991 prior models. The Sony AX53 is also a very popular choice. The Panasonics are less expensive than the Sony. The Panasonics and Sonys have great zoom ranges. The other option, is not a camcorder design.which is the Panasonic FZ300 which I reviewed. Has a great zoom and great picture quality and a great value, but it is designed more like a traditional camera than a camcorder. Hope this all helps. Thanks

I own both of them, as they're quite a good combo. The Canon plays in a different league in terms of ergonimics but the quality of the camera is quite questionable. Things like the ring at the lens feels so cheap and the wheel in the back tends to get malfunktions over the time. The display of the Canon is way nicer than the one of the Canon. The colors and the dynamik of the display are not comparable. Video is a huge problem with the Canon, as in 4k this thing overheats within 10min. The Sony runs until the limiter hits. Big plus for the Canon is the combination with it's digital IS in Video, it's buttery smooth. The Sony can't hold up here. Then the AF. The Canon AF is unreliable. You can't trust it. In video it's basically useless but for stills you have to have an I eye on it as it very often confirms that the AF has locked, but it wasn't focused at all. It happens completely random. The Sony is on point with it's AF. The thing with these to camera is, that the Sony is a tool and you feel it, when you use it. It's like operating a typical Sony pro body. On the other side the Canon. Canon could've build a cole to perfect compact. All the ingridients are there, but then they took the famous Canon cripple hammer out and crippled this camera in ways, where you just think wtf. Think about this, they don't let you shoot in burst mode when the electronic shutter is activated. They gave the G7X MKIII the mic-in, but not the G5X MKII. The annoying Af, the overheating in video. It's not because the cameras has not enough power, it is fast as fck. This is software that let the camera overheating. There are so many things they implemented to hold this camera back. This camera could have be so good.

You need a Power Delivery charger (USB-C to USB-C) to charge the Canon. I use my phone's charger for that and it works great. USB-A won't work.

Yes, absolutely, I recommend the RX100-7, or the RX100-5a. I use my P&S cameras like a replacement DSLR or mirrorless camera, except that I can put it it my pocket. I had a Canon Powershot S100 and the Panasonic ZS50, and both failed after 2 years of hard use, and the companies to repair it, wanted more than half the cost of a new camera, not worth it. BTW for you Panasonic camera users if you ever need service for your camera, Panasonic has a contractor in the US, and they are awful to deal with, so caveat emptor.
