I really hate the market segmentation most companies force on us. The G7X and G5X should be one camera. Put the better lens on the 7, charge in the middle of the 2 prices and that's it. Why should the customers be forced to give up the better lens on the 5 or the mic jack on the 7? This is just stupid.

I agree to some extent as you know from the video, but equally having the more basic spec has allowed Canon to price the G7X III much lower than its new rivals.

Profit over sustainability: Many do use a RX100 M7 and a G5X and maybe another one with usable Fullformat. So they sold 2/3 per person instead of one and the environment crashes by the way for their benefit... of course your back too because of the heavy camera load in the backpack. 😉 I do not know, what I should buy... 2.8 is not nice for me at a RX100M7 and all the artificial, unnecessary gaps on other compact cams. Would prefer APS-C but with better lens and autofocus, stabilizer, ND-filter maybe and so on.

It's your two years old video but I used it as a reference to buy Canon g7x mark III. I was looking for Sony rx100 vii as an option. But it is almost twice the cost to that of Canon g7x mark III. I had Sony rx100 mark III as my previous camera. I just loved it. It used to be with me for every small trip in my bag. It fell down and was damaged beyond repair. I decided on the G5Xii. It's intended use is to go with me everywhere in a pocket. Especially hiking. As small as mirrorless cameras have become, my X-T3 gets heavy heavy the neck after a while and I pack it inside my backpack. I'm new to Canon but the menu system has been pretty easy to figure out and I love being able to swipe through it with the touchscreen. I've used the viewfinder more than I thought I would. Bright light composing is an obvious use but I do like reviewing photos through the viewfinder before I move on from a scene. It's just a really nice, quick camera to use and that is exactly what I bought it for. Totally happy so far.

I kinda did the same thing but opted for the previous G5XM1. You can find crazy deals on the older model now which is still a great camera. Anyway I know your pain too. I was hauling around a Sony A600? with multiple lenses and I was quickly missing the ease of use, portability and options of my old Canon G15. And the Sony menu system is terrible. I never got used to it. Also try a good wide banded lanyard as a camera strap. I put a small key ring in the camera strap loop and found a cheap lanyard with a good metal clasp and it works great!. Its comfortable, light, cheap and not in the way as much as a strap. It's also easy to detach from the lanyard which can be a good and bad thing. Which is why I picked a Lanyard with a good spring clasp and a backup detachable plastic clasp I can use if I really want it to be secure with a double connection. www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01DLMCEC0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@loganholmberg22955 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you about Sony vs Canon. The ease of use and image color is why I switched back to Canon G series from a Sony A6000. Speaking of which I love most of the new upgrades to the Canon G5XM2 but during the Amazon Prime Sale I picked up a refurbed G5x for $400 Can ($1000 Can new or $1200 Can for the G5xM2) and I don't regret the purchase at all. Your preview of the G5xM2 also helped my purchasing decision once I saw they were moving the body to a G7 style with no flip screen. Also a G5xM1was definitely less or just as expensive as having to fork out cash for a macro lense for my A6000. I paint figurines and the poor macro performance of any of the lenses I had was getting too much. So why I'm glad I got the older model G5x after trying out the new the other day: - I prefer the viewfinder on the M1. I couldn't find a diopter on the M2. That being said having the viewfinder on the right side of the camera is better on the M2. The back of the camera is not squishing up against my nose as much. Resolution was a wash between the 2 to me. I also worry about the mechanism breaking on the new models viewfinder. - Being "limited" to 1080p video is not an issue for me. Also I loath the file size of 4K and unless you're creating content for others 1080 is great. - I love the flip screen on the M1. I put a glass screen protector on it but the piece of mind being able to shield the screen by flipping it and the versatility of the older style can't be beat. - I still have a hotshoe on the M1. Flash looks ridiculous on it but a hot shoe does give you other camera options too. - I still have usb charging and wireless data transfer. Something I couldn't give up when I was looking to get rid of my Sony A6000. USB C on the new models is Awesome though. They should ditch the mini HDMI for just the USB C. The standard can do video through it I believe. - I love the 2 front control dials and their programmability. You only have one on the M2 now. - The autofocus and low light is better on the new cameras but honestly this has gotten so good in the past few years the performance on the older G5xM1 is still great and I'm not shooting action or wildlife allot anyways. But with the stabilization in the camera I can still get some pretty decent shots of my brother's kids. - Even With the EV hump on the older M1 its still pocketable and its light enough that I wear it with a wide banded lanyard instead of a camera strap. Its plenty comfortable and gets in the way less than a full on strap. So honestly I like the new models but this is a great time to get a great camera on the cheap if you go with the older models. Also I don't have overheat BS like I did with the Sony's I've tried. 😁 Seriously that can't be good for the lifespan of those Cameras. With Canons I've always found the control dial on the back to be the weakest link but now its a full function touch screen so that's way less of an issue. I'm definitely keeping this camera till I kill it. Which may suck cause when that happens I don't think cameras like this will exist anymore. Oh and some of you may ask why not the g7x M2 or M3? I have no compunction to vlog, I want a viewfinder even though I don't use it as much as I should and I think the G5x takes slightly better pictures.

This was an EXCELLENT comparison. I love my Canon 70D (except for the maddening issue of often-missed focus), and I got a handful of lenses over the years, but I’m searching for a travel camera with which I can take better night photos than my iPhone 8. It’s tempting to try a mirrorless APS-C or FF, as I realize that would give markedly better lowlight performance, but I’m also specifically seeking something I can carry around in my flight bag (airline pilot) to capture scenery photos. Carrying around my 70D just seems a little bulky. I love iPhone size and convenience, but I end up throwing away most night scenery photos because they may look beautiful on iPhone screen but look downright crappy on computer or even iPad. Hoping the 1” sensor of the G5 X iii would be enough of an upgrade for me, and I wouldn’t regret getting something more akin to mirrorless micro 4/3 or APS-C. I was also considering the Sony RX 100 VII, but pretty sure after watching your reviews I’d be happier with the Canon G5 X iii. I’m only interested in still photography. Thanks again for great review!

If low light is the issue, forget RX100 VII, it has a slow lens. The RX100 Mark VA has a fast lens but just 24-70 when Canon has 24-100 and 24-120. You might also consider G9 X Mark II, it is the smallest. The one inch sensor and fast f/1.8-2.0 lens give results comparable to APS-C DSLRs with the kit zoom.

This is an excellent overview of the two Canons. I am primarily a still shooter who bought the 7XII about a year ago for travel. For me, the 4K video, live streaming and microphone input are not worth the upgrade. I'm happy with what I have. Again, I'm grateful for the video.
@jonuiuc15 жыл бұрын
The biggest use case for me would be for photos (travel), video is more of a occasional thing. I'd be interested if one or the other had appreciably better rendering across the zoom range. I know it probably more down to sample variation, but if one zoom design has an inherent advantage (I'd compare them with the rx100 mk v too, the wider aperture lenses interest me more). If image quality is equal across the board, I'd lean to the longest range.

Its pretty clear that for those more interested in the photo side the G5x ii is the better buy - if video / vlogging is your primary focus then its the G7x iii. The Sony for me is a non contender as the VII is still over £1k here in the UK so well over £300 premium over the Canons just to get better reach, better AF, simpler EVF.

Another review from Imaging Resource discusses the wide angle problem. “Compromises to achieve a more powerful zoom That's not to say that it's perfect, however. Canon is subject to the same laws of physics as any other manufacturer, and there are some definite compromises that have been made to achieve this impressive lens. That becomes most startlingly obvious when you open a Canon G7X raw file shot at or near wide-angle in an application that doesn't automatically provide Canon's default lens corrections. Wide-angle shot as shown above, but without correction for the abbreviated image circle of the lens. Apps like Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom and Camera Raw will provide those corrections even at their default settings, so if you restrict yourself to those, you might not notice this aspect of the design. (Or at least, you may notice its aftereffects -- some pretty dubious image quality in the corners towards wide-angle -- but not their underlying cause.) The reason becomes blindingly obvious in programs like FastRawViewer, my image culling app of choice, however. Look at an uncorrected raw file from the Canon G7X shot near wide-angle, and you realize that the lens' image circle doesn't cover the entire sensor area. 24mm-equivalent, 1/125 sec. @ f/1.8, ISO 1600 It's normal for uncorrected raws from pocket-friendly, large-sensor cameras to have strong distortion and corner vignetting, but this is nevertheless a pretty extreme example. To provide a usable image, it has to first be stretched to reach the corners -- and that means each pixel captured by the sensor in the corners ends up spanning a greater area in the final image. That's done automatically in-camera for JPEGs, and for raw files most mainstream apps will also handly it transparently for you. There's no getting around the fact that image quality is degraded in the corners, though, with a greater reduction in sharpness than we're used to seeing. If you're shooting a relatively central subject against a nicely-blurred background, you won't notice. If your image has strong detail even in the corners -- a landscape, say -- it can be pretty obvious at larger print sizes if you're paying attention.”
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your extra comments - I certainly have found the G7X III soft in the corners and this would explain why. The G5X II certainly performed better in the corners as illustrated in my video and at cameralabs.com, although I don't know if the imaging circle is any different at wide focal lengths. For these reviews I look at and compare the end result.

Is the g5x ii actually pocketable? Because it's larger then the g7x ii/iii and those are barely pocketable. I'd argue the rx100 is also barely pocketable as my VA sticks out and there's a bulge where the lens is in a large cargo shorts pocket. The VII is even thicker. I don't know why they focus so much on making the width/height so tiny yet keep the camera so thick with the large ring around the lens. There is also zero surface area to hold the rx100 because of this. I can carry a much larger smartphone because it is much thinner. Considering there are apsc fixed lens cameras with thinner bodies, I don't see why they still can't engineer a sub 40mm 1" compact properly (not counting the crappy g9x). The definition of pocket should always mean pants or trouser pocket, not a giant coat pocket.
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean and of course it depends on the pocket. BUT I'm travelling right now with an RX100 VII and a small mirrorless and the RX100 can fit into more of my pockets whereas the mirrorless cannot, which means I need a bag or a strap. Not a big problem, but the smaller camera is definitely more of a pick-up-and-go for me.
@jonuiuc5 жыл бұрын
I had the rx100 (mk 1) for a few years, it was at the top limit of pants pocketable , and even then the weight of it was too much for lighter pants or shorts (you'd need a belt). The later mk versions prob are all too thick and heavy, so people are stuck with the g9x or the orig rx100. The franiec grip was the way to go on all the rx100 bodies.

Thanks for this video. Thank you very much again. I think the Canon g7x Mark III is a better solution because it has a microphone input (3.5mm), of course it's a big issue that will put the microphone but lately there are videos that give solutions to it. In addition, I am personally interested in live streming in cases where the 4G network also helps. I think I should choose a smaller resolution in this case but I will necessarily compromise. Great subject for me and the f1.8 for low lighting like dusk. Combining all of the above, I think my choice once I decide to buy a camera will be the Canon g7x Mark III. The Sony RX100 VII is good but for so much more money than the Canon g7x Mark III I think it's unprofitable.

Even watching the video on my smaller phone screen, I can see that noise reduction is better handled on the Canon. Question Gordon. For the G5X II, can you turn the camera off while the evf is still up? Or do you need to push the evf back down before turning the camera off? Also I guess you do need to pull the evf out in order for it to work. That is you need the two step process of popping it up and pulling the piece out for it to work. Thank you.

Gordon, thank your for this and all your reviews. I’m trying to decide b/w the G5XII and the Canon SX 740 HS. I’m looking for a general purpose point and shoot for a pocket camera, but occasionally use to video ski race training that will be from longer range. This is the primary reason for considering the 740HS due to the long zoom. My question is: would the larger sensor on the G5X allow for similar quality digital zoom as the longer optical zoom on the 740HS? Or would digital zoom on the G5X degrade the video too much? Finding Video review of digitaly zoomed video on this camera has proven difficult for obvious reasons. Thanks again.
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
The optical zoom definitely wins over the bigger sensor if you need to get close to distant subjects and luckily there's normally lots of light in a skiing environment to make up for the deficiencies of a small sensor. PS - don't forget to check prices at cameralabs - here's the SX740 HS review: www.cameralabs.com/canon-powershot-sx740-hs-review/
@okaro65955 жыл бұрын
They are in no way comparable. You need to choose or get two cameras or get a mirroless like M50. The SX740 HS has a 4.3 mm lens with f/3.3. That is a 1.3 mm iris. The G5 X Mark II has 8.8 mm lens with f/1.8. That is 4.88 mm iris. The angle of view is same so they are comparable (ignoring the difference in the image shape). That is G5 X Mark II lets in 14 times as much light. If you can shoot in candle light with G5 X Mark II, with SX740 HS you will need to light 14 candles for same results. If you choose older and/or cheaper models you could get both a zoom compact and a quality compact for the price of G5 X Mark II. Like G9 X Mark II and SX620 HS. Combined here 600 € when G5 X Mark II is 1000 €. That also gives you a spare battery and charger. G7 X Mark II is also affordable. SX740 HS has 4K but it is cropped. G7 X Mark III and G 5 X Mark II have proper 4K Here is a comparison of the quality between a quality compact and a zoom compact: photos.app.goo.gl/Aso3dERN7cLKB1V5A

Question I have a G7X, does the G5X MK II stretch the image to cover the sensor when shooting wide angle? I have to get to the equivalent of about 35 mm to get away from the distortion and softness. “The Hybrid Shooter” noted this is still the case when shooting with the new G7X MKIII. If that is still an issue I will probably have go Sony. The RX 100 VA is a very capable camera for the same price range. I shoot a lot of landscapes and it always is a pain have to shoot a pano when the 24-35 is so bad. Since the G5X MK II has a different lens, did Canon fix this?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Most very small cameras - including mirrorless ones - perform a fair amount of geometric wrangling at wide angle to achieve a certain result. One thing you could do is look at G5X II images taken at the desired focal length to see if they meet your expectations?

Gordon Laing thank for your reply I shared a public comment with a link to a DP Review discussion on the problem. It is a deal breaker for me. I know that the Sony RX100 VA does not exhibit the problem. I have no experience with the longer zoom RX 100 MKVI or the new MKVII. I am selling my Nikon Full Frame Gear and plan on moving to the new Sony A7R IV. So going Sony in a pocket camera would make sense from a common eco-system. I shoot in RAW and print large. @@inspiredartphotos feel free to share the link in a reply here so I can check out the thread... I agree it is annoying when some features are faked or generated in some way, BUT the flipside is whether the result gets you what you desire - ie, the coverage in a package that size. When I'm testing cameras, i'm often surprised by the number of corrections and tweaks they perform to compensate for various deficiencies and it sometimes makes me hark for a pure quality approach. But then when you lug around, say, a Zeiss Otus, you hark for something smaller, lighter and cheaper! All compact cameras have lenses that produce huge distortions on wide angle and those are corrected in software (including the live view). If you are a corner peeper you need to get a different type of camera. The longer the lens the larger one can assume the distortion is.
