13:15 that would be the βII/βIII record-βI playback switch for the American version, the SL-5000. The PAL and NTSC models share the same board just with different components. That's why lots of components are missing in a lot of areas.

That makes a lot of sense and I did wonder - thank you so much for sharing. 😊

its often those light blue sanyo caps drying up. Later models with the light blue caps dont seem as bad though.
@TTVEaGMXde Жыл бұрын
Sanyo bought an electrolytic capacitor factory that probably produced inferior electrolytic capacitors. After improving the quality, however, the appearance should have changed as well.
@MrBetaByte Жыл бұрын
That's a really great insight on the Sanyo capacitors. They do seem more reliable in newer machines.

It's such a common issue that changing all the light blue Sanyo capacitors is a first step and then diagnose issues if there are still any to solve.
@lukasgayer5393 Жыл бұрын
Aaaah, the servo issues. Well, many more caps will need to go :) Oh, how I "enjoyed" working on my C5s but also some earlier Betacords. I wonder why is it always the caps around the servo ICs. Are they subjected to more stress over the years?

Yes, certainly the go to repair on these machines. Voltage, heat and frequency stress certainly shorten the life but these machines are old and the manufacturing process for all these capacitors was not always 100% but it's amazing how well these machines have lasted. The Sanyo caps were just not that well manufactured in this generation of machine. Did you work for a TV and Video repair business? Would love to hear your story on working on these machines.

@@TTVEaGMXde If it's like in the C5 those light blue ones that go bad are some special type of capacitor that seem to be meant to behave more like tantalums rather than standard aluminium electrolytics. Not sure if they are some weird form of electrolytics, tantalum or some hybrid or some predecessor to OSCONs or something else but I guess whatever formula they used didn't hold up very well long term. In the role they have at least in the C5 I don't think a standard electrolytic from the time would have had good enough properties to do the job they're meant to do.

I have one of these from my mum and dads i saved from the tip it does the functions and loading fine but no sound and only a dark grey picture no jumping or lines i also have the heads from a mk2 machine that has suffered damp and is in my dads basement not in the best condition the mk2 a shame as it had the original box as well .i do have an sl c7 this has good heads and picture just servo cap issues and the clock is not working no doubt due to the leaky battery for clock memory .
@MrBetaByte Жыл бұрын
Sounds like the sound is being muted from lack of video signal so my guess is it'll be an issue somewhere on the video processing side of things. Shame the mk2 has been in the damp especially as it has the original box but it may well still be worth saving - I've seen machine sthat have been in the damp come back really well but it just depends. The battery on the C7 is a real pain these days - they are always bad and have leaked everywhere. Buttons for setting the time functions are always problematic too. Are you going to try and get the issues sorted?
@paulb4uk Жыл бұрын
I will sort the c7 out the buttons for settings all need replacing. The C6 I may pass it on to anyone who wants to save it or use it for parts .

I wonder why SONY didn't install a complete (1/2" high) head drum, or did a patent fee have to be paid to JVC per groove ? At this point I would like to mention (once again) that electrolytic capacitors of an old design, even with only 5.2 MHz suffer. The newest IC in the video is from the 52nd week 1981. I know Ladykillers in 2 bad versions: color unrestored (4:3) and color bad (too much red) restored (HD).
@MrBetaByte Жыл бұрын
Sorry, yes, I will cover the capacitors that are breaking down under frequency - I have two machines where I think this is the case and I'll talk about that then and I'll try my best to mention you too as it's a very valid point 😊 Ladykillers is a great film with maybe not so great colourisation but I can get past that just because it's such a great film. From what I understand, the thicker head disk is to help with image stability with the disk's alignment, this being no longer and issue when the head disk 'fit' was calibrated. I think it's just Sony being 'belt and braces' with making sure their machines were as stable as possible.
@jkmac625 Жыл бұрын
What type of capacitors did you use instead of electrolytics? Tantalum? What's the advantage of using a different type? Are those replacements also polarised? Thanks.
@MrBetaByte Жыл бұрын
Yes, I used tantalum capacitors just because they are much more resilient and should outlast the life of the machine. Yes, they are polarised and I do use 35v ones too as the voltage rating is less of an issue (as long as they are the same or higher than the originals of course) when it comes to life expectancy.

you might want to do an update video to reflect a further update to the SL-C6 BEFORE the MK2 design, because i've got the (AS) Australian model + the complete manual. Dated January 1984 is a "Supplement 2'" where the board CP-6 (Camera PLAY board) was eliminated and integrated in the board SS-9 which was altered to reflect this. i haven't matched the changes in the manual but visually there's less usage of the blue Sanyo's, C18 suggested a Tantalum but they used a Pink Elna Electrolytic & C58 was an Elec now used a green color 'ceramic' in its place.
@MrBetaByte11 ай бұрын
That's super useful to know - thank you so much. Would there be any chance of getting an electronic copy of the second supplement? If I can, I will certainly return to this with my own C6 Mark 1. Thanks again.

1 other kid in my school class when i studied electrionics kept a longer nail so he could adjust the various non conductive adjustable resistors . Plus longer nails habe their uses to open say walkmans sometimes better than using a knife.
