I have the same unit that I also want to use for my garage. I’m glad I stumbled upon this video. I will also remove the Center and Rear channels. Great idea.

Worth a look for output and power supply problems, system control problems maybe not.

It's even worse now. Someone brought me a fancy high end stereo that had multi layers of boards to take off first plus taking off the front and taking the bottom board out. Even the fuse was on the bottom board not easy to get to with normal tools. I was like no thanks.

It is worth fixing if you already have replacement parts to hand, but these are worth so little now that even a few capacitors make the repair uneconomical. Can't even sell them because the shipping costs more than the value of the unit, and the solder joints will all fracture and break in shipping.

I have several of these STR-D and STR-DE series that totally died or in permanent protect mode.. Thinking about using one of chassis for a SDR build that would look a lot like a IC-756Pro.

i have the str de998 and is great receiver, i know old technology are the best, from 2010 to back the tehcnology are good, but the 2010 to now the technology are bad, and made in china, i prefer old technolody, good job, you have gold technology in your hands

Is there an advantage to hot checking the outputs vs diode check? I took some heat shrink on my probe tips and trimmed off just enough for the tip, with my shaky hand I have slipped and damaged. I have a gaggle of old Fisher stereos, I prefer this over the AV, which typically need a unobtainium DSP chip anyway. You can count on cracked solder on those older Fishers units, they used cheap solder I think.

Hi there, that was a great video. I have a unit exactly like that but I have a different kind of problem with it; when I press the switch on, I can see only those tiny LEDs on both sides of the panel on, but no display. The relay from main power source doesn't click either. The good news is that all fuses from power source and amplifier board are all ok. So, would you have a clue where the problem may be? Thank you so much for any imput and I appreciate your attention.

Hi Trevor, I watch your videos with the hopes of learning how to troubleshoot and repair audio gear. I'm a total novice and thought you had to always take components out of circuit to test them? However it seems as if you test/check many in circuit. I suppose you have your reasons, but it leaves me puzzled. If any of your goals are to help others learn, please explain more of what you're doing and why. Many thanks & Best Regards, Jack

You can test a lot of components in circuit as long as you know how other parts will effect the tests. Sometimes the test is inconclusive so the next step is to remove it and isolate the part, test again. For diode and transistor tests, I use the diode function of my meter. It's a low voltage/current test that won't excite the surrounding circuitry into coming alive. Remember, for stereos, you have another identical channel to use for comparison when troubleshooting. I'll try to remember to explain how I test and what I'm looking for, thanks Jack

You should start by checking voltages, then if any further work needed for gods sake you MUST discharge the two large filters by shorting them together with a 3w 200ohm resistor, these things can hold a deadly charge for months, they can kill you

@@TrevorsBench Thanks, most techs won't answer questions. I've come to realize at age 60 now, with a background in electronics this is what I want to do during my golden yrs, even if there isn't much money in it. equipment is so expensive, anything DIY is good.

Those darlington readings can be misleading. Another quick reading c to e would be shorted with all other readings ok
@peterjmcgee4680
@peterjmcgee4680 2 жыл бұрын
I already know where this is going final outputs transistors on one of the channel are shorted out and that's what's blowing the fuse I guarantee you that's what the problem is cuz 9 times out of 10 whether witches Sony or at Pioneer or the hockey oh when one of those final outputs do they always blow the main fuse

Yup, I should have known better but the initial diode check showed no shorts which is what threw me off course
