Yeah I don't know if I've said this before but I'll say it now.... I could never be able to take apart something this intricate, let alone fix it and put it back together without breaking or dislocating something else. You my friend have some real technical skill.

To learn from an old pro is better than anything for learning how to repair these old machines.....Thank you for passing on your invaluable knowledge.

Great video as always, cool to see this Sony serviced and working. Thanks for sharing, always cool to learn more about real Sony products. Also didn’t realize MiniDV needs a cleaning tape due to how it works, good to know! I have used the paper cleaning method for VCRs though, works great!

DAT also. Metal tape.

DAT is a cool format, something I still need to try out. In the meantime though I’ve been using minidisc ever since I got my MD deck, fun format to use. Plus with an optical pickup, don’t need a cleaning cassette for it.

Hey Dave I'm not sure if you'll get notice of this message, I used to be able to click the message and it would be directed to the poster but it doesn't direct messages for some reason now. I had a thought a long time ago concerning the head rotation. I wondered if the quality of the video would have been better if the drum rotation had been reversed. It seems it would put a wider space between the video tracks, the guard bands would be wider in other words. The only way I could think of to do that would have been to reverse the coil connections. Though I never tried it, it likely would have made the tape slide off the video drum. Of course if the tape did track properly the video tape wouldn't be compatible with other machines for obvious reasons.

It looks like those blue gears are under quite a bit of permanent tension from that rather substantial spring - no wonder that they split open. I guess they are all on borrowed time and no doubt it's getting worse as time goes by as the plastic gets more brittle. Thank goodness that you are still managing to obtain the blue gears. What a shame it would be to write a machine off just because of one gear. Cheers Dave.

There needs to be some repository for old gears etc that could be 3d printed or for castings otherwise all this stuff will never get repaired!

There are fewer and fewer ofbus left that know this old obsolete equipment. Many of the old guys are gone. Many still with us but not doing the work anymore. Generally when the techs left the business, the younger guys like me retrained and changed jobs and just abandoned any type of repair work. I did that for 10 years. For 10 years i didn't touch a soldering iron. Not till I started doing the videos. The older guys retired and most are dead now. Out of all the guys i knew when i was in the business only 5 are still alive. I knew about 30 guys locally that we used to share tips with and i would see regularly at training sessions put on by Sony, Panasonic and RCA which put on courses 2 or 3 time a year and i would see all the same faces all eager to learn the new stuff. Even all the parts suppliers i dealt with back in the day are all gone, as in dead. Only 2 remains and our of them only one has a retail store the other is nail order only. I do this for 2 reasons. To make money from the advertising and premium viewers and to teach repairs. I make very little from the actual repair. The DAC that came in the other day for example, customer gave me 20 bucks for the reset and showing him the menus. In the long run however that video will make me much more than that. Each video doesn't make much but when there is a ton of content they all add up, and that's the reaaon why even though i have done the blue gear before I do it again because there is always something extra to learn. In this case it was the pendulum arm sticking in addition to blue gear.

19:07 - I wonder on that free-floating spring on the far left that appeared just after the that plastic cover was removed, can't tell where it popped out from, but it seems it remained unnoticed... 🤔

Good eye. I didn't catch that! I looked up the manual for the SLV-R5UC and it's a compression spring that goes right under that plastic cover. Can't tell what it's for though. It flew off when he took the cover off.

Very interesting. I haven't tried working on a VCR yet. I have at least one that will eat a tape as soon as you put it in. But the DVD recorder works. And I have another VCR that worked the last time I used it.

Sony just put to much money into options and not enough durability into them I just got a sony tc wr535 dual cassette deck and both deck likely have melted belts it has cool options Dolby b c nr pro 2 with ams and the single direction auto reverse flip heads but it only makes a little click and hum so motors work but belts suck sonys one problem the dang belts
@12voltvids2 күн бұрын
Sony didn't make the belts.

@12voltvids exactly they either dry up and snap or melt to death if you got a sony wm 10 you can't use it or it will wear out but it can't sit or the belts melt that's hoe they cheaped out I say gpx had better sports walkmans because they almodt last for ever
