Great repair, Dave! I'm psyched to see that old faithful running again and given another lease on life. As I noted (and you mentioned in the video), that machine is no runway model and came to me with that physical damage in 2010. But it has been a flawless beast for me now for 12 or so years....that is until that tape transport problem, so it has sat still for about 3 years. But because it has recorded 100+ tapes for me perfectly, and played back many, many more, I hoped it be worth going through the trouble of fixing this issue. And it appears it was worth it! I knew it played/recorded great when running so I had faith. Awesome!! I appreciate your work, and videos.

5 Man Electrical band was a favorite of mine back in the 70's. "Signs" was a huge hit down here in the States. Still like their music. Thanks for their shoutout!

So according to vern Craig the guitarist the song was penned while riding the bus down I5 heading to capital records in LA to record. It was in reference to all the billboards along the highway. It was never intended to be recorded. Just the guys passing the time. The manager on board recorded it and played it for a record company exec who asked, no demanded they record it. The band objected saying it was a garbage song but their manager convinced them to record. It went to the top of the charts. The follow up hit was absolutely right and that was was directed at their manager with respect to their suffering opinions of signs. "You were absolutely right and I was wrong" and it also became a big hit. Vern gave me a copy of the 2 CD release "first sparks" from the bands early years from their start known as the staccatos 5 man electrical band which was their original name. The dropped staccatos. It's actually not bad. They had a beach boya sound in their early years. He moved a dozen years but i still get his jokes by email. One day i asked why he left the band right at the time signs was a hit and he said some of the members were getting into hard drugs so he left and went into advertising.

I have had soo much audio equipment in my life, I also repair. The only Digital tapedeck I have ever had was a DCC-82 marantz recorder. I have Never had a DAT tapedeck. These were troublesome in the 90's. The mechanisms made by Sony were always very beautifull. Not always that reliable unfortunately.

Seeing these things work is quite interesting. I never got into the format, tho. I heard they can be quite troublesome besides the fact they consist of a lot of unobtanium

Thanks Dave. Tell me about that Sound effect I hear a lot of in the Background in a lot of Your Videos. Sounds like a Beer Bottle Cap being popped off and landing on a Bar top HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Haven't heard the Duck Quack Fart in a while either... Mike M..

Dave: Didn't SONY use cob washers for holding the gears on place ? I never imagined them using plastic retainers!😮
@12voltvids7 сағат бұрын
Cut washers were common. This I've used clips though.

Big box for such a small mechanism. The circuit board takes up most of the space.

When individuals who has years of experience that can repair old tech aren't around anymore. Who can fix it then?? I doubt that some of this old tech will be useless by then.
@12voltvids7 сағат бұрын
I guess nobody will be fixing old stuff then. There are not many if us still doing this now.
