Nice video! I just got a TCD-7 which would play a SP tape at half speed and was unable to FF / REW, showed "blank" . Turns out the grease on the gears had become sticky. All the little cog wheels which assist the loading mechanism were too difficult to turn for the capstan motor at the correct speed. The are all engaged even when the arms are loaded, see at 4:25 in the video. Another thing which can happen is that the rollers on the loading arms loose their adjustment. The very small setscrews (with red laquer on them) which should keep them in the correct position have become loose and they are difficult to get to without disassembling. I managed after opening the cassette door hinges (two screws hold them) with a very small flat-head screwdriver. A small piece of wood or plastic can be used to keep the cassette door down while testing. Greetings from France!

48kz is BETTER than CD quality (not that you'd be able to tell).

Where are the lube points? I have the D7 model I bought in '95. I used it for a few years, then it sat. I recently tried to use it again, but the lid wouldn't open. I watched a disassembly video and found the capstan motor was gunked up. I got it to turn fairly easily, but would like to give it fresh lube. The machine works again but you can tell it's laboring during the last stages of rewinding. I'm halfway tempted to spray it with WD-40...

DAT used a Metal formulation very similar to the Type IV used in later compact cassettes. Hence the black color.

Do you still do repairs on these units? I have a TCD-D8 that will load but will not play the tape....When you insert the tape it will display load and then flash and display 0.00.00 then when I hit play it does not play..Please let me know and I will get in contact with you to work out details..

i'm having the same problem in my tcd-d7 and considering they have the exact same structure i was wondering how exactly you managed to fix this, like how did you push the shaft ?

A small socket and a center punch, and a hammer. I just pushed the shaft through the center a small amount.

That was "very cool". Any idea on the audio specs since that what this guy was ultimately all about? I have an 8mm recorder that also records DA. but alas the audio specs aren't that great. I believe only 80Mhz - 15k Mhz Why it wasn't some great like 30-40 mhz to 18K Mhz behooves me:(

I got a dc7 thats dead but the light works on the LCD it's the only thing working no display just the light ,any ideas what's wrong ?

Probably the microprocessor is not waking up. They sleep when not in use.
