If you think it's a dc-dc conveter problem, why didn't you manually provide the voltage to the circuits and try to power it up? You could guess the voltages by the capacitors voltage around it. If it takes four AA, why do you need a DC to DC converter? 6V is high enough to provide good power for small headphones.

@svenschwingel8632 2 жыл бұрын
The DC/DC converter also provides the necessary higher voltage to the LCD backlight system and I think the capstan motor (which drives the entire mechanism) runs off 9 or even 12 Volts. The D7/D8 portable DATs were based on the D3 design which had a native 9V power supply. The next iteration, the D100, ran off even smaller 3 Volts of battery power.

According to the owner it powered up on adapter, but not batteries. Will be revisiting this again as soon as I get a chance. Spent the day dealing with a laserdisk player.

The DC DC converter CP501 has an output of 8V and 4V so you could use your power supply to connect these voltage directly to test?

It could be the switch inside the power connection that isolates the batteries when a mains adaptor is used?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The plug has a switch and on this model is on the negative terminal. Looks like there may be 2 switches in it as there are 5 terminals on it. Since I don't have this adapter (special size plug) I ended up bypassing the switch and that brought the battery voltage up and Wala the DC DC converter came to life. Part 2 the mechanism repair will be up shortly.

Im stuck.. my A-Class stereoamplifier shows 21% more voltage, than the wiring diagrams says on +-VCC, on both chanels.. +57v instead of +45v.. 1 common trafo for left and right card/chanel.. any tips of how searching.. is it capacitor related/zener/resistor or trafo.. ? the amplifier works but should it be so much voltage, zenerdiod working hard to get rid of voltage and 2 resistors gets really extremly hot..

Hey man, I just bought a tcd d8 that works really well, but only if it is using the power adapter. Battery tray looks great but device won't turn on with batteries
@12voltvids

Could be the power jack. Has a switch inside that disconnects the batteries when power plug inserted. That switch goes bad and won't reconnect when power adapter removed

I have a unit that was just like that... no power. It was the Transformer yellow input that was blocking the batteries power due to twisted pins inside. Check that please. When a external power supply is plugged in it acts as a switch and cuts the batteries power out.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 2 жыл бұрын
I see the battery voltage going in and back out of the external power connector. Unfortunately I di not have an adapter to test with. The adapter I have even though the plug is yellow is a larger size and does not fit.
@PaulJCost1
@PaulJCost1 2 жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids Try to check that out even with injecting the 6V directly on the yellow plug and see the results, if nothing happens its the DC to DC converter thing.
@PaulJCost1

The one i have had that problem all because of that yellow external power connector. Insist on it maybe you will get some positive results out of that.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 2 жыл бұрын
The power connector was the power problem. Positive was passing through it but the ground side had high resistance. Not open but high enough that the DC DC refused to start.

I've got some TASCAM units that have a similar problem when on battery power but thankfully work fine with the AC to DC adaptor. The fact that 2 different model devices have the same problem makes it interesting and possibly a design flaw. Luckily I don't need to run them off batteries.

Hmm, not an easy part to repair. It seems that sony never fixed the converter It's smd scale and you would likely need a microscope to see what you were doing. Not worth the trouble. Nice slim soldering iron, but i wonder how long the element could cope with multiple full power instant heat ups from sleeping.

The idea of DAT walkman is a bit odd to me: the complex tape transport and the need for high power capacity is quite against the idea of portability. What is great about that era is that Sony ventured in the design and manufacture of products which would surely sell in very little volume. Sony products portfolio in the 80's and 90's was huge, something completely unthinkable in these days
@12voltvids

Well these were not designed really to carry around and listen to music although I'm sure some people did. On batteries they were actually quite efficient and lasted a long time set a batteries would run for many many hours and most people would run rechargeables in them. DAT Walkman we're real popular in the pirated music scene. People would smuggle them into concerts and make bootleg recordings and being digital they can get the best sound obtainable in the stadium. I originally got one to play tapes in my car. Then a car player came out which was quite nice I had one of those too. They were quickly replaced by mini disc. Teac and tascam had a few portable models that were quite a bit bigger than these tiny Sony walkmans but they were more geared to professional use with things like XLR connectors for professional microphones or connecting to mixing consoles. Many live recordings were done direct to dat from the mixing console using one of these tascam or teac decks. They are my favorite of the portable style because they use full size transports that are much more reliable plus the transport can be lifted out of the cabinet and worked on separate. But then you can't put them in your pocket as her the size of a portable tape recorder but more features more input output capability no special cables needed they have lots of pluses

I can recommende IKEA:s rechargeable batteries named LADDA. They are made by Panasonic and sold as ENELOPE. But, IKEA:s is much cheaper. There is only one factory in Japan that makes recharegeable batteries and that is Panasonic. So the Enelope is the same as the Ladda. The other brands are made in China, and not of such high quality.

Sony is usually a good make, but sometimes especially these days I guess some of the people who work there don’t know what the hell they are doing. For example do you remember RadioShack in circuit city? Before circuit city went out of business people there didn’t know what the electronics were and they should know they should be experienced in that, RadioShack the same way. Years ago in the late 90s early 2000s I tried to find a battery for my cordless phone and we went to RadioShack, these people acted stupid and they didn’t know what we were talking about when we showed them the battery that we needed they kept giving us the wrong one and it didn’t fit the phone, then finally we ran into this woman Hill either worked for RadioShack or didn’t work there anymore I don’t remember but anyway we told her the problem and she said I don’t know why they are acting like that and she was able to get us the right battery. you have to wonder why we don’t get good help anymore, well that’s a big part of the problem these days.
