I rlly like it it plays my old dvds and automatically upscale it to 4k the picture looks nice I rlly recommend this 4k player. It has hdmi link so when I turn my tv on it automatically turns on and starts playing

I recently bought this player. I am having issues with lip sync while playing regular DVD's (non blu-ray) and streaming Netflix. I plugged in my fire stick and that worked flawlessly for Netflix. I have not noticed any issues with Blu-ray disc's.

No. It's not always on. You have to choose Dolby Vision on or off. But even playing a regular HDR with Dolby Vision on forces Dolby Vision on your TV. It's really weird

Awesome review. My Best Buy recently got their Samsung 8K TV 85 inch on display. What're your thoughts on 8K movies being a thing with native 8K players? Is it even possible especially with the trends going towards streaming? There is an increase in streaming boxes being bought (Roku, Chromecast, Android, Apple TV, Fire Stick) and less and less for BluRays. Samsung pulled out of 4K Bluray players, Sony didn't have a 4K drive for their PS4 Pro. The Samsung 8k tv is noting about their processor and upscaling. Do you think there will be native physical 8K BluRay discs and players? They already killed off 3D and only sell them in EU, which makes up a small install base as more and more 3D TVs are being obsolete and non-replaceable.

There are currently no plans on the books to develop a physical 8k medium, though my understanding is that a 1TB optical disc has been developed.

Bought this player last week and so far so good. I'm enjoying it, Dolby Vision looks better than HDR10. I like the fact that you can switch between the two. Dolby vision has an on and off feature and when you watch movies in dolby vision the logo pops up in the upper right hand corner letting you know. When watching 3d movies though you have to turn it off manually cause it disables 3d when on. Can't beat it for the price.

You need to check what your disc is putting out by pressing the display button, no Dolby Vision turn it off.

Hey man my father got this for our 1080p tv and when we watched a film last night there was sever ghosting or artifacts issues in the back of the screen(during dark scenes). Tomorrow I’m going to test more films but so far I’m worried we made a mistake. Have you had any problems playing 1080P content ?

I've researched the myriad problems with the x700. 10 regular and 4k discs discs in, it works perfect as a disc player. The Netflix app is problematic though. With BF pricing and 25% off Rakuten, the x700 was $102. I was hoping for an LG UBK90, but only the Sony Dolby Vision players were on sale this BF. I'm glad the gamble paid off. 2019 is the year to get into 4k disc playback. More and more 4k discs are hitting the $8 mark

Great review. I would like to know why you are against upscaling to 4k? I think 1080p content is really impressive upscale to 4k? The only thing I dislike about this machine is you are meant to switch on dolby vision if you are watching a dolby vision disc and off if you are only watching hdr content. The problem with this is not all discs or their covers say they are dolby vision. Like flash gordon I have the uhd steelbook and the cover nor the disc say that it in actual fact is dolby vision. If you Google it you will find out that it is. This is problematic as it means you need to know for sure if it is in dolby vision every time before you play a movie as if you just leave the dolby vision switched on all the time the discs that are not dolby vision the contrast is all wrong and it does not display correctly. So sitting wondering a lot of the time is this in dolby Vision? Is it correctly displayed? I am thinking to change to the ubpx800m2 version as I think that just automatically switches when the disc is dolby vision. At least I think so. That would be so much better as with this machine it is a bit of a problem.

the x800m2 also has this problem. it just has an on/off switch. no automatic switching. it's ridiculous as it's Sony's most expensive player.

Hi, got one myself. Just don't get the 18GB/s HDMI cable requirement. 4k blurays are HEVC encoded which gets up to 100Mb/s max. Press display button on remote to see the bitrate, while playing a bluray. Like your videos!

Thanks! 18Gps is so you know you're getting an HDMI cable that will support all that 4k has to offer. I could say HDMI 2.0a but that's confusing and not typically printed on the box so it's easier to say 18Gps. Also it's not just about the speed of the transmission (18Gps) it's also about the ability to read/transmit the HDR metadata which hdmi 2.0a allows for.

It's much more complicated than that. Yes the high efficiency of the codec allows for great compression, but it's decoded/decompressed before it's sent to the TV as a full uncompressed 10-bit video signal which uses a lot of data per frame. The same is true for audio unless there's an external device/receiver decoding it.

Home theater, i'm between sony x700 and philps bdp7501, i know that the latter only has netflix and youtube in 4k as apps but for me enough, i don't need dolby vision, x700 has more apps, but i saw numerous reviews that x700 It is very noisy when playing blu rays, my biggest interest is to have excellent picture when playing full hd and 4k blu rays, without freezing, blocking, etc ... which one do you recommend? I had screwed on LG UP970 but the same does not do DLNA and is also very noisy when playing blu rays

Hi mate, how are you doing? I'm doubting about this Bluray player for one reason only, and that's sound. Let me explain a little bit better. I have a rather old Home Theather, my best type of connection is optical, so, I think you get what I mean. I just bought an OLED and I have no money left for a couple of months honestly, but i wanted to buy something like this bluray player, but then again, I'm not sure about the sound, and here is why, if I send the audio to the TV and then I output the audio through an optical cable from the TV to my HT, would I get 5.1 sound? Normally, I use optical from the TV to get 5.1 sound, and I have another one in my PS4 so, if I'm using my console or the TV, I can switch them and still have good sound. I'll buy, eventually, in a distant future hahahaha, a new Home Theater, but in the meantime, I'd love if you can answer me that. Thanks in advance.

i have a problem with this player. bought it 2 months ago. didtn watch a lot of uhd movies yet. i watched joker, inception and batman begins on it. with batman begins i got a problem. the last 20 or 30 min got stuck, freezed and player restarted. it was the scene where ras al ghul visited bruce in his mansion. disc was alright and new. no scratches or dust. tried again and same. player is up to date. i found something on google. some people has the same problem with the dark knight trilogy, bad boys 1, kong skull island uhd discs. why does it happen? is it a software issue? copyright issue?

The only issue I have with this is it will occasionally pause a UHD disc and I don’t know why. I also have an LG UBX90 and that doesn’t pause the discs. By pausing, I mean it’s like it gets stuck. After I eject and and reload the disc, it works fine. Normally it happens on Warners and Disney 4k discs. But the picture quality is great.

It supports Atmos. My main annoyance is having to turn Dolby Vision on and off, it doesn't auto detect the format. Other people in comments have reported issues with the player freezing. I haven't had this problem but it's worth noting.

I know this is a old comment but I had the Phillips bdp7502 and it sounded like a moped running , just when it played 4k discs. Also it froze constantly ! I don’t have an Apple TV 4k so I can’t comment on the quality comparison, sorry. The Apple TV 4k apps will probably stay more up to date than the apps on the Sony player due to better mark share/ market recognition.

So I have a TV that supports Dolby Vision, but a receiver that does not. If I plug this Blu ray player to my receiver through HDMI, the picture on my tv will not be in Dolby Vision? Is this correct? I don’t want to plug the player directly to the TV because TV speakers obviously aren’t great.

Correct you won’t be able to pass through Dolby Vision if the player is attached to your receiver. Another option is to attach the player to your tv (via hdmi) then connect your receiver to the “hdmi-arc” connection on your tv. That will send the TVs audio to your receiver and onto your speakers. If your tv supports “e-arc” it will send lossless audio 😀. Enjoy!

Thats a great tv!! Honestly a UHD player is the best for and the best on the market now is the Panasonic DP-UB9000. I haven't tried this one myself but it supports all the majors HDR formats so you'll be future proof. In the settings menu select “Audio Settings” then “Digital Audio Output” and make sure “Auto” is the choice. Auto sets the output to bitstream which will send the audio info to your receiver/processor and allow it to decode the disc. Hope this helps!

@@HomeTheaterHobbyist yes, I just sent the second one back on Friday. They both lasted about three months before they started having issues. One was purchased from Amazon the other Best Buy.

arios1977 yeah for some reason they provided a firmware update so the 700 can play Dolby vision (which looks incredible btw), but they didn’t for the 800. Which is ridiculous being the 800 is the more expensive model

I could not tell the difference from my LG HDR only and Sony x700 Dolby Vision so I returned the Sony. I also do not like how the Sony x700 does not automatically detect Dolby Vision without having to manually turn it on/off.

Yes, switching Dolby Vision on and off does get annoying over time and I would forget from time to time.

Please do not buy this. Its HUGE issue with skipping scenes and freezing with 4k movies. This happens with new movies and etc. Ive worked with support and they claim Sony has been looking into this but the issue continues a year later. Not a disc, firmware setup issue.

Its manual says support GPT formatted usb external HD up to 4TB. Anybody tried 8TB drive yet? And if this is not a good upscaler. What's a cheap and good one?

A bit late to the party but I wonder if anyone is using this bad boy with a 2017 Samsung UE49MU7000 (in the US I believe it was the MU 8000)? I already have an XBOX One S without any issues but I am indeed curious if a dedicated player would be worth the upgrade?
