I have to agree, especially on the 50mm f1.8 - it gets a lot of bad press but on my a7iii it’s an absolute little gem on a lens! Superb sharpness, a bit of CA (easily corrected manually in lightroom) and not the fastest autofocus (but not too bad and it’s at least accurate) - overall i love it!

dragonfist25 agree on clients (and arguably photographers too if given them side by side) wouldn’t be able to spot which was which. Both great lenses - funnily enough I was filming a wedding today and for the speeches I was tempted to use the 50mm as it was a very tight room and poorly lit, so was initially between the tamron and the 50. We ended up changing the speech arrangement which meant I could film from outside the room so ended up going with the 85. Was tempted by the 50 though!

I've owned the Samyang 24 F2.8 and 35 F2.8 before. Great small little lenses in terms of sharpness, just as the review states. Great value in a small package. Only thing that bugged me with the Samyang lenses (and pretty much any other 3rd party) is the AF noise. Since I mainly shoot video, the little AF clicking noises drive me crazy on 3rd party lenses. You are paying more for the Sony but the AF is always fast, silent and smooth. Great to have options and different budgets as long as the AF noise is not an issue for you.

Your autofocus test at 1:49 is flawed. Samyang is on AFC while the Sony is on AFS if you bottom left on the focus indicator. Under af-c, the Sony will be even better due to the efficiency of linear motor working primarily on PDAF. Even on a7rii, there’s a noticeable difference. On afs, it’s based on CDAF. The Sony was £450 last Monday at (21/9/20) the UK Photography Show. The button is useful if you have it on all your AF lenses, say 24mm GM and 85/1.8. You can then free up a button on the body, say for eye AF. If you have a lens without the button, say 55/1.8, you still need to duplicate the eye AF button on the body. Looks like the newer lenses are getting the button though. Could be useful on an A7C where you have less custom buttons. Close focusing, you might want to add a 58mm achromat for the Samyang, a decent one is around £65.

I have Samyaing 35 f/2.8 and Sony 35 f/1.8 on A7RIV. While being pretty good in the center (maybe just a bit worse than Sony), Samyang is clearly way weaker in the corners. The corners and edges beyond APS-C area are weaker even with Sony wide open and it is a disaster compared to it stopped to f/2.8. Samyang 35 f/2.8 corner perfromance improves to levels barely acceptable on A7RIV around f/6.3 but even stopped to f/8-f/11 it is still nowhere close to Sony (and, evidently, the new Samyang).

The only thing I don't like about it is something you can see on the photos here, it has quite obvious green-ish tint that has to be calibrated in Lightroom manually, at least right now. Coating seems to be the only thing Samyang didn't learn how to do properly yet. Hoping to record a video comparison of two lenses before selling the 2.8 version.

The Sony has 2 main advantages: 1) No dock needed for firmware updates 2) Closer minimum focus distance (22 vs 29) which makes it more versatile. Samyang are killing it with these small FE primes lately. The 18, this one, the 45, the 75 - all are absolute bargain. I recently bought a full frame Sony. My plan is to collect a set of these primes only. Finally, a FF system that is SMALL. Weeee :)
@dominic-ryan4 жыл бұрын
100%. This Samyang 35mm is only 90g heavier than the tiny Olympus 17mm f/1.8 prime I use on my M43 cameras, and that is the smallest/lightest 17mm AF prime available on a mount system whose major advantage is being compact and light!
@momchilyordanov81904 жыл бұрын
@@dominic-ryan My 2 previous cameras were Olympus. Some time back, I sold my Nikon full frame and went MFT mainly because of the difference in size and price. But in the last 2 years, Samyang with these primes and Tamron with their f/2.8 zooms, turned the table completely. I mean, the Tamron 70-180/2.8 is virtually the same size and price as my Oly 40-150 Pro was. And the Tamron 17-28/2.8 is actually smaller and A LOT cheaper than Oly 7-14 Pro. Crazy! I was reasoning with myself for sometimes. "But 180 is not the 300 equivalent, but this, but that..." And don't get me wrong, I loved my M1II and M10II ! And I still love the tiny 45/1.8 for example :) But the reality is, the main advantages of the smaller sensor system are simply not there anymore. I believe this is why Oly is in trouble and Panasonic are trying to make the turn.
@dominic-ryan4 жыл бұрын
@@momchilyordanov8190 from a size standpoint I certainly think you are right, however for run and gun video centric requirements I still think M43 has some distinct advantages. It was the Dual I.S, 10-bit 4:2:2, and uncropped 4K60P with near non existent rolling shutter options of the GH5 that hooked me on M43 to begin with. High end video specs at an affordable price is something the GH line has been crunching for a few years that we are only really just starting to see now with full frame with the S1H, a7S iii, R5 and even the S5. Regardless though I do think M43 may have hit it's ceiling here. High end 6k video specs might be achievable, but where too from there? The rumoured 41MP sensor (imx492 I think) for the GH6 would result in seriously intense M43 lens resolution requirements to make use of. As it stands the 20MP GH5 has greater pixel density than the 61MP A7R IV. Then there is low light performance (which is what interests me) which has not historically been great aside from the GH5s. I think some of the newer mega dense Sony sensors have the ability for adjacent pixels to work together somehow for light collection, no idea how effective this is in practice though or if it will translate to the sensor to be used in the GH6. Either way, I have begun selling off my least used M43 lenses as I prepare to migrate to the A7S III for the low light and auto focus. If the GH6 is announced formally before the end of the year with truly spectacular video capabilities, then I'll likely stay M43. Otherwise I hope to be fully E-Mount by early next year.

HELP! I'm buying Sony A7 III. Should I go with the kit lens or buy the Samyang 35mm f1.8?
@stefan_becker4 жыл бұрын
My impression is that the bokeh of the Samyang is a bit smoother and less distracting. Can you confirm this? Too bad there's no comparison image with both lenses and the same subject.

It's subjective, really

Thank you very much :) The Samyang looks like a very good buy. The are so many lenses for the Sony system now, but I miss compact 300, 400 and 500mm prime lenses !

What’s the point. Just get the sigma 35 1.2 if size don’t matter. It’s the best 35mm u can buy.

@@fnaticmedia I haven't used the Samyang myself, but I have hear good things about it. Still I would guess that overall the Sigma would be slightly better - but this isn't 100% certain.
